Adamic is the language of the Gods. When spoken, it has the power to create worlds, to raise the dead, to make man as God. Fortunately, no one has spoken it in thousands of years. The only remnants are the written spells.

The people of Cavernum depend on these spells. They’re etched into the city walls, fending off the feeders—deadly creatures with a thirst for human blood. They kill and consume any caught beyond the walls. Yet for the lower class, Cavernum isn’t much safer. Children starve, and illness runs rampant. In an effort to maintain order, all children turning 18 are subject to The Dividing—a city-wide competition for the highest paying guilds. Those who aren’t accepted are sent to the fields, condemned to a life of slave-labor.

Princess Roselyn Malik has trained her entire life for The Dividing. She’s guaranteed a spot in the royal orchestra, but equalist rebels threaten her throne. To secure her crown, Rose must acquire the power and prestige associated with the guard. Only guardsmen have access to the amulets—powerful weapons that grant dominion over the elements.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, Matt will do anything to help his terminally-ill adoptive mother. For now, that means poaching to pay the bills. Until one day, Matt is attacked by a feeder and plunged into the world of Cavernum. There too, Matt is drawn to the guard, in search of a magic strong enough to save his mother.

But danger lurks beyond the walls, and Cavernum won’t be safe for long.

I'd like to start by thanking the author Devin Downing by providing me with a free copy to read in exchange for an honest review.

Well boys, we did it. We managed to finish a whole book even though we've been in a reading block since May.

This book was a solid 3.5 stars, but I didn't like it enough to round up to four stars. Like all books, it had its pro and cons and in this book the pros and cons mostly cancelled each other out to leave me with a pretty neutral feeling about the book.

General thoughts about the book:
-It very much made me think of a mash up of The Iron Trial and Divergent.
-It managed to both drag and be interesting at the same time
-Some parts felt basic but others blew my mind.
-I was annotating the most at the beginning and the end, which if you know me that means that I'm bored with the story.

Pros:
-I liked Rose/Lyn/Roselyn. Her character arc reminded me of Eadlyn from The Heir, which I know a good amount of people don't like, but I personally like the "spoiler character gets slapped in the face by reality" character arc.
-I also liked Matt. You know I love me a underdog softboy with a tragic and mysterious past.
-I also also liked Diego. He was chill.
-I also also also liked Aspen- I mean, Antai.
-I thought the world building was interesting, but it did leave me with questions.
-The writing style was nice.
-

Cons:
-Sometimes the descriptions were unclear to me exactly who was where and doing what.
-Matt was very inconsistent with calling Judy "mom" (and yes, sometimes "Mom" as a title wasn't capitalized. I think it's because I got the version of the book before typos and stuff were fixed but a simple thing like capitalization shouldn't have been a problem in the first place). And maybe I'm reading into this too much, but here's the thing: most adopted kids (ESPECIALLY if they were adopted at a young age, say less than three years old) will only ever see their adopted parents as "mom" and "dad." They are our family now, and we don't have to have a crisis over it everytime. Yes, some adopted kids do struggle with the whole "my parents aren't my 'real' parents" crisis, but from what we're given about Matt in the story, he had no reason to. He was found as a baby with a knife, necklace, and tattoo by Judy and she RAISED him, but he just calls her "Judy." I don't know who needs to hear this, but less adopted kids then you think really see their adopted parents as "just some random people who raised me." Most adopted kids see their adopted parents as their parents, and are honestly more likely to have a bigger crisis over meeting their biological parents. Anyways.
-I did like the commentary made about sexism and privilege, but that was completely cancelled out by something that Judy tells Matt. She tells him, "If you really like her [Rose], chase her. Girls love to be chased. They crave it. Deep down, they want to feel wanted. They want to feel irreplaceable. It shows them you know what you want and you're willing to fight for it." Matt asks, "I don't know. Can't it come off as creepy?" She replies, "Only if you're ugly. If you're ugly, it's creepy, but you're not ugly, Matt." I would just like to say, No, don't do this. Pursuing a girl when you know she already has an SO is ALWAYS creepy. And honestly, I'd consider it creepy coming from a good looking guy too because in my mind I'd think, "Ah, entitled. He uses his looks to get what he wants even though I said I have a boyfriend." And sure, girls like to be admired and chased, IF THEY'RE SINGLE. Don't 👏 pursue 👏 a 👏 taken 👏 girl 👏 or 👏 you'll 👏 be 👏 creepy👏. I think that this is made worse for Rose because of her encounter with Vyle just chapters before. Gentlemen, please, leave the taken girls alone. "No" means "no."
-Those "plot twists" (I'll elaborate on this one in a while).

As you can see, the majority of what I liked in this book were the characters. I thought they were fully fleshed out, developed, and developing. I really liked the gang. So let's use that to segway into discussing my last con of the book, which will need to be marked with a spoiler tag, so proceed at your own risk.

I should warn you that there is an assault scene in the book. It's not graphic and nothing too serious happens but it is an assault scene nonetheless. Just so you know, in case you don't like reading stuff like that or you needed a warning.

This wasn't a bad book, and I do want to read the second one. But please,

4/5 stars

The Dividing is an intense urban fantasy reminiscent of early YA greats like Divergent. or Throne of Glass

Going into this read, I wasn't really expecting much from it. I mean, I thought I would enjoy it, but I liked it much more than I thought I would! I rated it four stars because there were definitely some cons to a multitude of pros, but overall I had a great time! I finished this 500-pager in just two days because I couldn't put it down.

As you probably saw up above, I compared The Dividing to both Divergent and Throne of Glass. It reminded me of Divergent for the way they were sorted into their jobs, but the domineering vibe was more Throne of Glass (but less Sarah J. Maas-ized.) There was a competition for the top place in the guards and a bit of political intrigue. Both of those early YA classics shared their best characteristics with The Dividing to make for a satisfying read!

I think one of the best aspects of the novel was the characters. We have two POVs: Matt and Rose. Matt is from outside Cavernum and is trying to acclimate and Rose is the princess of Cavernum. They both have very different journeys but they both end in a satisfying way. Devin Downing put little gems of some of my favorite things from books into some of the characters (for example, the Matt thing that I won't spoil.) I get the feeling that he spent a lot of time drawing his favorite aspects out of a lot of books.

In the beginning and middle of the book, it was a little slow. But you can't expect everything to always be moving quickly when the book is 500 pages long! While the first bit dragged on the most, the last third of it was amazing. Before, I was planning on rating The Dividing a three or three-and-a-half. After that ending, it's bumped up to four. The action never ended! There was a trope employed that I don't normally care for () but for some reason, it worked here.

And here we come to the biggest downfall. The writing. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. You can tell that Downing got a little excited there at the beginning of the end from all of the exclamation marks everywhere. The writing was simple and juvenile, though I will agree that it did sound like we were in the heads of the character. But the style was probably just not for me, as I know that is how many people prefer their writing. Again, it was reminiscent of early YA. I swear, publish this book five to ten years earlier and it would have been a smash hit.

All in all, I actually really enjoyed this book! It's conveniently on kindle unlimited, so I will most probably be reading the second book as soon as I have time.

Sadly, this is a DNF @ 40% for me. I tried multiple times to get invested and it didn’t hold my attention. Im sure it will be a great book for someone- I just didn’t enjoy it like I hoped I would.

Just want to start off by thanking the author, Devin Downing for gifting me a copy to read and review!

I’ve never read a book like this before (not a bad thing). In terms of the setting. It gives me high fantasy vibes but modern in terms of technology and weapons. But also in America so we get the whole nine yards in this book. The story reminded me largely of Throne if Glass by Sarah J Maas. There is a “competition” between recruits for spots tl become guardsmen and of course lots of action and adventure as a result. But also the threat of war and rebellion are prevalent throughout the whole story. I loved our two main characters Rose and Matt. I found them relatable and easy to read and understand. I think my favorite part aside from the fighting sequences in training was learning about the the ruins and different magic! This book really has everything and boy did Downing leave us on edge at the end. I mean COME ON. KIND OF RUDE BUT I STILL LOVED IT.
•••
So I definitely think you should all give this book a read!

This is a 3.5 star read for me. This is the first book by this author Devin Downing and I think it shows real promise for the future of this trilogy and the rest of his works. As with any debut book there are some rocky parts but overall it was pretty good. The world is really interesting and has lots of potential for expansion. I thought it was really interesting how the world was inspired by christianity but it doesn't shove religion down your throat. The magic system is fascinating and makes it seem like it could exist in our world we just don't know it. The plot was a little slow at first but it evolves nicely and allows enough mystery for the rest of the series without being boring. The book did feel a little unfinished at the end but I'm sure that's because it's the first book in a trilogy. The characters were fun but kinda felt a little typical for YA fantasy not bad but made the book more average. Hopefully the characters will evolve moving forward and become more unique. I don't even know what to say about the romance I'll have to see how I feel after the other books. Overall I loved the word and magic system and the plot and characters seemed pretty average but have the chance to improve in future books. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books and seeing what else this author has to offer in the future. I would definitely recommend this and this author has promise. Give it a try knowing it's not perfect but it's fun and enjoyable.

~About

The Dividing follows the lives of two teenagers, the royal princess of Cavernum, Roselyn, and Matt, an adoptee who returns to his magical roots. While Cavernum’s people are growing restless, demanding equality, feeders (demonic, blood-thirsty beings) start to attack the Adamic (ancient magic) sanctuaries around the world.

As Matt and Roselyn train to become guards in the hope they can make a difference and protect their people, danger lurks in the shadows, preparing to strike.

~Characters

The characters in The Dividing were well-rounded, each with their own personal lives and emotional baggage. The main characters were Matt and Roselyn.

Matt, a teenage adoptee with unusual tattoos linked to an ancient people, appeared caring and trustworthy at first glance. He cared for his terminally ill mother, hunted to make ends-meet, and enjoyed a somewhat ordinary life, until he meets a man who knows a lot about his strange tattoos and the secrets behind them. Watching Matt’s gradual transformation as he entered the new world of the Adamic was fascinating and drew me deeper into the story.

Roselyn, princess of Cavernum always wanted to train to become a member of the guard, however as future queen, this dream puts her in great danger, as rebels seeking equality between peasant and royalty have targeted her. Courageous, strong, loyal, and caring, Roselyn made for a worthy princess, despite the outcries of the citizens who had turned against their monarchs. Seeing how Roselyn became torn emotionally over her people’s pain and suffering only further emphasized her human compassion.

Diego, a devoted friend to Matt when he first learns of his heritage, was an interesting character. His constant worry over his family’s future was relatable and made me feel for him deeply. His deep drive to find his mother, who he feared dead, is commendable, and it was this sense of fierce determination that made him a fierce friend.

~Likes

There was much to like about The Dividing. Due to the number of things I picked out, I’ve decided to list them here as bullet points.

.A sense of mystery is established early on and gradually continued to build, drawing me deeper into the story.
.The characters were likable and complimented each-other’s personalities well.
.The first person, present narration style made the story feel very immediate and intimate.

.The world of the Adamic people had a rich history and was full of intriguing traditions, such as The Dividing, for which the book is named.
.The internal, conflicting emotions and desires of the main characters are well explored and helped to increase tension in an effective way.

.I loved how Roselyn’s viewpoint regarding the laws of Cavernum is contrasted sharply with Matt’s, to show the difference in their upbringings and their view of justice.

.The story is packed full of magic and secrets, and made for an intriguing read that kept me constantly turning the pages.
.Shocking twists had me shouting at the characters as I read on and got me very emotionally involved in the events of the story.
.The ending, in particular, was incredibly suspenseful and left the start of the series on a powerful note.

~Memorable Quotes

Through the course of the story, two main quotes stood out to me.

1) ‘The only thing worse than failure is knowing you never tried.’
2) ‘You can do this- there’s always a chance. If you don’t believe it, then you’ve already lost.’

I found it refreshing that both quotes dealt with the theme of failure and belief in oneself. I think that, now more than ever, people in the world need to hear such encouraging remarks.

~Overview

Overall, The Dividing was a fascinating story, packed with magic, secrets, and unexpected twists. Themes of oppression, friendship, loyalty and betrayal helped to make a powerful statement about justice between classes of people in society.

My Rating: 5 stars. An imaginative story, with a richly-created world.

Good concept but huge holes and crazy dumb characters

This is a good novel for those looking for a teen girl angst book without plot which is a shame. The new take on what are essentially vampires isn’t bad but the characters are crazy dumb and illogical. Guy gives up the world and agrees to go to essentially Siberian prison to help family member an then forgets all about that and seems fine with feudal slavery and struggle - essentially for no reason. Female protagonist is angst ridden and crazy illogical. No understanding of politics etc despite being raised around it - she just wants to “help people”. Perhaps I missed the 12-15 age warning but the plot holes made this painful when it could have been great

First off, this isn’t an urban fantasy. It’s a dystopian, hunger games, magic school type story. The plot is wonderfully detailed, and the magical world building is also good. There are a lot of plot threads left hanging but I loved princess and Matt, and I’ll be reading Book 2.

Very interesting concept in place, it has everything to be an epic fantasy series. The occasional romance elements are a little tiring at times (always the same old trops...) but the plot unravels at a good enough pace that I was able to set those same old same old "love triangle" distractions aside.

Alright, this was one amazing and enthralling book!
I came know about this author through his instagram page, where he keeps posting all these interesting prompts and stories. I had read the synopsis for the book before it had released and definitely was intrigued by the premise. Being a broke college student though, I planned to save up and buy the book later.
However through the good will of the author, I was able to obtain a complimentary ebook copy of the novel and thus dive right into the story.

*Could contain possible spoilers*

This book hit all the high points that I look forward to in a Fantasy novel. It contains sufficient world building, which is something that always interests me. The author has left enough breadcrumbs around for future plotlines to build upon.
The pacing itself was fantastic and there wasn't a moment in the book that I felt bored or wished to put it down for a breather.
In terms of plot exposition, I feel it was done well, as one of the protagonists, being a new comer with as much knowledge as us readers about their world, had enough time to digest the information being thrown at him, while raising queries which we ourselves have on our minds.
If I have any complaints, it would be about the at times, abrupt switching in the narrative views and also that sometimes there is a sensory overload in quite a few scenes, especially when something monumental is happening (The vault robbery and the feeder attack during graduation to name a few).
But these are just kinks one works out with practice and experience, especially considering this is tue author's debut novel.
The first half od the book picks up slowly, allowing one to adjust to the book and the second half is where things actually get rolling. The shift in stakes and plot progression is pretty discernable between the two halfs.
Overall, I am pleased with the world concepts and narratives displayed and with that intriguing ending that was built up by the second half, I definitely look forward to reading the 2nd book, whenever it comes out(hopefully soon!)

A must read for fantasy and mystery lovers.
Give this book a shot, you definitely will not regret it!

I've been following Devin's instagram accounts for a while and the short stories and prompts he comes up with have always been amazing, so when I heard he'd written a book I was ecstatic. And I must say, he didn't disappoint. The Dividing has amazing world-building and is written spectacularly, and I couldn't stop reading it - even when I was watching TV shows I love, I found myself desperately waiting for the advert break so I could keep reading.

The book is very obviously religious, with many references to God, and Adam and Eve and such, but I, an atheist, didn't find it too much. It serves only for the world-building, so don't let that hold you back!

So why isn't it 5 stars?
Here's the thing. It was written by a guy, and it shows. No, I'm not sexist. The book is; only a little, and only a few tiny issues, but it bothered me. There's a line that says something along the lines of "i can't believe i was beat by a girl" and another, in which the main character's mother encourages him to 'chase' after the girl he likes even though she's in another relationship because "girls always love the chase" ... :/

But the thing is, they're not that big of a deal because Cavernum, where the majority of the book occurs, has a sexist society, which the author highlights as a bad thing.

So yeah. Definitely give it a read.
Massive congrats on the author for creating such an interesting story; can't wait to read the next one!!

4.5⭐️

The Dividing is a present-day dystopian with elements of magic, secret languages, soul-devouring demons, and more. I was initially a bit hesitant because Amazon has it categorized as a Christian Fantasy (and I’m not very religious), but the only correlation I saw was with the magic system being rooted in Christian theologies, which was actually SO interesting and unique.

The book itself was unputdownable and I found myself so engrossed in the world-building and magic system, which had a very Hunger Games meets Throne of Glass vibe 👌🏼

There were a lot of characters in the book, but I felt that they all played an important part in the plot and were all genuinely interesting. It was easy to become emotionally invested in many of their stories and I definitely shed some tears on multiple occasions.

In terms of romance, there is a bit of a love triangle. It’s certainly not the driving plot in the book, but it was just enough to pique my interest and I think we’ll see more in book two.

Overall, for a debut novel, I really loved it. The story was super well-paced, the characters were likable, the world and magic system felt unique, and I would highly recommend it to all of my YA/NA fantasy lovers out there.

Cliff hanger

First the positives. The writing is interesting, the story unique, the power system is new, and there is no lurid sex. The romantic interest is pleasant. Cursing is limited to one angry character (no f-bomb). It kept my interest, and there was a lot of action. Parts of it felt Harry Potter-ish, such as the school, the student interactions, the heirarchy, etc.

I somehow got the notion that this book was supposed to be Christian fiction, however, that seems to be relegated to a few scripture quotes and uses of God and demons. God is nowhere in this book. If anything, good and bad is subjective, as both sides seem equally evil. There are many people to feel sorry for--almost everyone. I absolutely despise when authors kill off friendly characters with abandon. The pervading feeling is hopelessness.

There are plenty of mysteries and oddities to keep you wondering just what will come of them. Too many ends are left dangling for me, and though I am curious what happens, I don't plan to buy the next book.

The rating of TV-14 seems about right due to the violence.

3.5 stars really. Author has done a good imaginative job of creating this hidden world. Really like the character of Matt. Rose was good until she became annoying ☺️. She is so extremely naive even after witnessing horrible events. A total idiot can see how awfully unfair the division is between the high born elites and the rest of the sanctuary is without question…except she questions. That was annoying. At other times she seems quite brave but then she doesn’t use her position to make easy immediate changes. There was enough intrigue her with Matt and Zane and the King/Grandpa to keep me reading. Big cliffhanger at end of this book. It’s called a trilogy but I can only find the two books and no info about a third book. Emailed for information from the authors website and got no response. Hate reading just part of a trilogy and waiting a long time to finish 🙄.

I really went into this book, having no idea what it was really about. But the minute I started reading it, I was drawn in. This book has sort of a Hunger Games/Divergent vibe...it took just a minute or two to figure out where the story was heading. There are different characters in different settings, and I was anxious to see how it all came together. Once it clicked, I was in! For me, it was what I call a "fast" read...story line moved along quickly, and all of the characters were definitely engaging. It is not considered a Christian book really, as there is a little language, but the Biblical aspects in the story are quite interesting. There are three more books in the series, and I will definitely be moving on to book 2. I had never even heard of this author, but think I will give his books a try, for sure.

A fast paced, well developed storyline with in depth character development and great world building-this book has it all.
Really my one major problem with this book is the whole premise of the Adamic race. It's based on the line from Adam. But these people have zero knowledge of the God who created them. Really I think the author just used this wild idea to make up a whole race of people who are hidden from the rest of world so he could have vampires and demons mixed in. But the author should at least know basic bible knowledge to make this world maybe not believable but plausible.
I know I know. It's fantasy. But it just didn't mesh with me on this one point.
Otherwise I truly enjoyed this book.

Content Rating: ❌ (estimated)

Language: moderate. One character swears a lot. No f-words.

Violence: some. A lot of characters die. Battles to the death.

Sex/Nudity: moderate. Sexual assault (but not extremely graphic).

LGBTQ+ Content: unknown.

Other: discussion of sexism. Adoption. Feelings of hopelessness. Demons.

My Review: unread.

Some readers estimate the content as TV-14. Other say it's more appropriate for new adults. I haven't read it myself, but it sounds like a lot of the content toes the line.

Amazing!!!!

Oh my god! I do not have enough words to describe how blown away I was by this book!!!!!
The story itself as a whole was incredible, the pacing was utterly perfect and the suspense honestly killed me!
The characters were all really fleshed out even the secondary characters, which I find sometimes lack a little believability, however in this they were completely brilliant. I don't want to go in depth for fear of spoilers however you will not be disappointed if you give this book a read!
I can't wait for the second installment and I am thrilled that I picked this book up!
I'd give it 10 stars if I wasn't limited to 5!

Gripping

This is my first book in this genre. I don't know WHY I downloaded it, but I'm glad I did. I loved everything about it! A few little errors, grammar and a couple of tensing issues, but none of them took away from the brilliance of the story. This needs to be a TV series, not a film, they're too short and wouldn't do it justice. I can't wait to read book two, please tell me book 3 is almost with us? If you're unsure if you should read this.. Do it. You'll be glad you did!

Very interesting read!

This book was interesting from the beginning to the end. I really liked how he revealed the hidden details of the story in layers, surprising me with each new tidbit. I found it very intriguing how he created a world based on stories from the Bible in a very unique way. It's quite creative! I liked how much of the conflict between the classes in Cavernum relates to feelings people still have today in our "free and equal" society. I am so ready to read the next book in the series to find out what happens to Roselynn and Matt.

Started out slow, but halfway it became more interesting. I gather you understand a bit of druidic Celtic knowledge along with an understanding of the psyche. I chose the rating based on my interest in Wicca. It was an interesting read. Someone with knowledge of the buddhism.

It was an interesting read, would encourage people with knowledge of Wicca and Buddism to read it. Started rather slow, more interesting as progress thru the tale

Honestly, the beginning of this was extremely rough and made me want to drop it numerous times.
However the story finally picks up once Matt gets to the new city and that's when I finally became interested in what was going on.

The characters are well fleshed out and enjoyable. The magic is unique and it got me more interested about it the more I read.

Also that cliffhanger of an ending was kind of fantastic.

I hope we learn more about Matt in the next book.

Great story, R rated for language

I liked the story, and despite some serious lack of Biblical knowledge, it had some interesting ideas. However, this was listed as a Christian novel, and it most definitely is not. It misconstrues Biblical fact, and the swearing makes it a book no child should read. It's sad, because with only a little more care, it would be a fun, exciting read.

This book kept me interested from start to finish. In most books with more than one perspective I find myself begging the book to return to the one I care about the most. The Dividing has two extremely compelling perspectives and I found that whenever the perspective switched away from either character I was very excited to pick up where the other left off. I'm excited to read the rest of the series.

It's Worth Reviewing

It's also worth reading. The author asked for reviews, so here's one he might like. The book is an interesting mix of urban/medieval fantasy. It has some interesting and believable characters and some attention getting plot twists. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because it's a good readable book, not a literary masterpiece.

Adamic good book

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Many twists & turns. Characters are terrific. Princess Rose is the main character & she proves to be quite resilient. Interesting concept of Cavernum that seems to exist as a parallel? World as some oof the characters come from LA! Looking forward to book 2 of the trilogy. I expect a terrific read

Slow and Dark

This book starts off well, but it bogs down quickly. It's very slow. It's also quite dark near the end. The line between good and bad is blurry in this book, with talk of some demons being good. There is minor cussing and a lot of violence. The only sexuality, though, is kissing.
