Fire and Valor #2

The Prince's Dragon

Rate this book
The last place Lord Tristram Radcliffe ever expected to find himself was right hand to the Llangardian throne. His parentage should have seen him banished, but he managed to keep his draconic secret. Now, King Reynold is dead. Long live King Roland.

The boy ascends to rule a kingdom in chaos, and Tristram must undo the damage of the last king's reign to save his people from lean winter and wolves in the palace itself. Reynold’s former shadow, Bet Kyston, is determined to root out King Roland's enemies, but his version of help may cause as much harm as good.

There remains a traitor near to the throne, and when the king falls mysteriously ill, Tristram’s strongest ally is forced to leave court. As his enemies move closer, the strength of Tristram's regency is more precarious than ever. Abandoned and friendless, Tristram must sacrifice everything to protect his homeland or risk not only Roland’s life, but his own.

If Tris could survive long enough, he could win any fight.
But Tris would never survive Bet.

This book picks up right where The King's Dragon ended. Tris is trying to keep the kingdom under control, while also trying to keep young King Roland safe. Tris wants to trust Bet, as they both want to keep Roland alive above all else, and they also happen to be in love (even if they haven't acknowledged it yet), but he is not sure if he can. The dragons are also proving to be more important in all the conflicts and politics as they have to face threats from the North, and while some of them are still hoping to ally with the humans, others prefer to attack them, even if they have no reason to do so.

Murder attempts, poisoning, lying, and scheming are an integral part of the book, and even though we kind of know from the start who is behind it, there is always a tiny bit of information that is withheld, only to be revealed later. There are some revelations and plot twists, but I did see them coming so while I enjoyed them, I was not shocked or surprised by any of them.

Still, he was starting to think that with enough time, and given enough reason to trust, Bet could become a member of Roland’s court—less a shadow and more a man. The man was there already, he was just hidden under so many layers of doubt and anger and self-loathing that he was hard to see. Tris saw him. Bet just didn’t see himself.

Tris and Bet are similar, yet so different. Their morals are on the opposite side of the spectrum, but their goals are the same. Tris sees the good in Bet, even if Bet does not want to see it, and I just adore the little family they make with Roland. Their feelings are evolving, it gets more intense and deeper in this book, and even though they do not spend a lot of time together (sadly), the little time they have is hot and intense and full of smut and sexual tension.

Tristram was as skilled as almost anyone at wielding a sword. He and the steel worked together like old friends. And it was nearly impossible to stop Tristram. He was a runaway wagon, a falling boulder. He would plow through his enemies with sheer strength, determination, and unflagging stamina.

But Bet wasn’t just skilled; he didn’t wield the sword. Bet was the steel. He was all sharp edges, pointed words, and actions. He was a scrap of black silk on the wind. A lightning strike.

I really love both Tris and Bet, I couldn't pick a favorite honestly. They are both badass, strong, fierce, loyal, sweet, and caring (even if one of them tries hard to hide it). At first, I admit that I had a preference for Bet, because who doesn’t love a dark, broody, and badass half-elf? But Tris’ kindness and beautiful heart won me over too, and I love him just as much, for different reasons. I just want them both to be okay and have their HEA.

“Are you dying?” he asked Rhiannon in horror.
She rolled her head on its side so she could look at him, and rolled her eyes. “Poisoned. Never eat a king no one likes. Apparently, they’re full of the stuff.”

The secondary characters are also getting more important in this book as they play a crucial role in the politics and the alliances that are forming. Rhiannon and Sidonie are still together and getting more serious (and there is a little smut too), Gillian is also gaining confidence and developing her powers, and she might also have gotten a hot and grumpy dragon out of it. 😉

There are new characters that I really love, and I want more of them. More specifically, I want more of Rhys's calm and reassuring presence. Also, Dragon needs to be protected. At all costs. Poor sweet baby. There are also new friendships and alliances and everything gets more tangled and more complex in this sequel but in a good way.

There are still multiple POVs in this book, and I think we’re up to 9 now. You get used to the style though and it did not bother me. Considering that many of the characters were apart from each other, it also made sense to have different POVs to help us follow everyone's adventure. It also added some tension because you would have to wait for a few chapters before knowing what happened to the characters. It also allowed the authors to have multiple sub-plots progressing at the same time, thus having more complex politics in this book than in the first one.

Some storylines converged and met at the end of this book, but some are still isolated and I can't wait to see how they will all mix in the last book of this series. The pace is fast and it is a quick book to read even though it is 300 pages. I really enjoy rereading this series, and I am as invested in it as I was the first time I read it.

Another 4.5 Hearts!!

This sequel did not disappoint and obviously, cannot be read as a standalone seeing as how this starts right where The King's Dragon left off.

Front and center is the fragile connection between newly appointed regent Tris (half human, mostly secretly half dragon) and assassin Bet. They have one common goal and that is to keep Tris’s young cousin Roland, alive until he’s old enough to take over the crown. Each has completely different ideas and methods to accomplish such, each at opposite ends of the moral spectrum as it becomes increasingly clear that a traitor is in their midst. However, the undeniable pull between these two has only gotten stronger, and it was satisfying to see their feelings evolve into an intensity that made me swoon.

What ensues is still a complex look at the tenuous and contentious dynamic, not only between humans and dragons, but also both having hostile relations amongst others of their own kind. On the periphery, but no less interesting or important, are the various other characters in play. This involves humans and dragons alike, each struggling to find their path and do right by their peoples in any way possible. Intersperse all that with a sadistic ambitious enemy who has a seemingly unbeatable terrible power and one knows that more anxiety inducing trouble is sure to come.

All of these storylines are set in motion, as discoveries and machinations push everyone towards a journey of smartly revealed convergence.

Be forewarned that though Tris and Bet’s growing romantic feelings are the main course, also brewing is a FF and MF pairing that have significant page time and explicitness. Though I would gladly forgo the lady bits in what I choose to read, I still quite enjoyed these other two couples plus one more possibly in the works. What I came to conclude was that this story and the overall series as a whole, has emerged as an absolutely fantastic ensemble piece containing magic, dragons galore, political intrigue, and fucking asshats who need to die a slow painful death.

Yes, this still boasts 5 main POV’s with a smattering of other voices. Yes, there’s plot twists and reveals around every corner. Throw in some nice smexy and plenty of feels, and you’ve got a well rounded historical fantasy that kept me engrossed the entire time!

I applaud the complexity of how Fawkes and Burns handled so many characters and plot threads (while never being confusing), bringing a wonderful conclusion to the second act despite ending on a crazy cliffhanger. My only complaint is that the next book isn’t waiting for me to dive straight into!

Thank you to the authors for a copy in exchange for an honest review

I need book three like right now because I have feelings, feelings about people who need to have very horrible things happen to them.

This book nicely takes off very soon after the end of book one with the Kingdom in chaos and Tris not knowing where to turn.

There's dangers lurking around every corner but there's also unexpected allies and new friendships forming too.

This book has multiple POVs and I love that I get to see inside the head of lots of different people, not just Tris and Bet.

I also love that there is a strand of FF romance running through the narrative as dragon emissary Rhiannon continues her journey with Sir Sidone, the beautiful knight who helped her escape.

With new secrets being revealed, new characters entering the plot and an enemy determined to take all, the pacing rattles along like a train hurtling to a broken bridge but never veered too far away from the central thread as Tris and Bet navigate their relationship further.

#ARC kindly received from the authors in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Sadly, I still care less about the other characters so I skimmed on some details. However, despite my growing annoyance with multiple character POVs, I can admit that this was better than the first book. Love Bet's character development and his growing relationship with Tris. Maddox as a character and pair for Gillian was an interesting addition, too. I kind of had a soft spot for Rhys though? He seems like an amazing dragon. ❤️

Strange how suddenly a writing style element that kept me from enjoying a book becomes an advantage of the following book in a series. Having so many different voices in book 1 didn't allow me to get attached to any of the characters and therefore I wasn't able to enjoy the world creation which although promising also felt a bit fractured. So I was reluctant to start the 2nd book and without the review of *A Reader Obsessed* I maybe wouldn't have put it on my Kindle ... but I would have missed something because now the different PoV's help to show how rich that world actually is, how complex the characters can be (that is for all the narrators but as we don't get the view of the villains they stay a mystery but at least evil enough to ignore their one-dimensionness) and how many different sources of danger there are. The complete book feels more balanced for me and yes, while I would have liked more on-page time with some of them I also wouldn't like to have missed what's going on for some others. It's now like looking at a jigsaw puzzle, seeing the different parts come together with the different narrators being the necessary corner stones while being surprised that the complete picture is still changing. Now there is no doubt anymore that I'm going to read the next book.

So good! Even better than the prequel. I’ve never cared about so many characters in one book/series before, but here it’s pretty much unavoidable. Props to the authors for creating such an amazing ensemble cast. 👏

This series keeps getting better. I was thoroughly enraptured by this book and could not put it down till I was done.

Once again, everything was not as it seemed and with events coming to a head in some areas and others hanging in the air, I'll give the same advice I gave about this book when I was reviewing Book 1 ; make sure you have book #3 primed and ready to go before you touch this and do NOT read the blurb if you don't want spoilers.

The writing was impeccable with the intertwining stories of our major players in this story once again expertly woven into this epic story of love, loss and betrayal. Characters in this book were often not like they seemed and it was these complexities that added the depth of storytelling that I've come to love about this series.

Another thing I've come to love about this series is that its not just focused on one M/M pairing. This series includes so much more; such as the wonderful development of an F/F pairing and even a couple of M/F pairings(if my prayers come to pass Lol!). I wouldn't worry about all these pairings getting overwhelming because they do not. By the time you are even 50% into this book, you will be rooting for all of them to get their HEA like I currently am!

Off to the next and final book!

Another great addition to this terrific and flawless series . Loving the suspense , intrigue and action which pulled me right in from the very beginning ! What makes this story so very compelling are all these multiple couplings (MM,MF,FF) Once again I loved getting lost in this wonderful world these authors created .
(I already dived into the next book 😋...this series is just too tempting with all those different characters I’ve come to love and care about .)

The Prince’s Dragon is the second book in the Fire & Valor series and continues the story started in The King’s Dragon. You are going to want to have read the first book to follow along here. As with the first story, the book is focused on Tristram and Bet as our main love interests and protagonists, but there is a large ensemble cast. The story is told by many POV characters, and their side stories all combine and weave together to build the overarching story arc for the book. It is a really entertaining structure and one that could have been hard to follow, but the authors really excel in this format. There are many pieces in play, with different events happening simultaneously to different characters. The authors do a fabulous job of taking all these myriad threads and building them together so they slowly coalesce over the course of the book. It allows us to focus on what is happening with Tristram and Bet in the palace, but still keep up with relationships between Sidonie and Rhiannon, and Gillian and Maddox, as well as various other players. I find this style extremely engaging and incredibly well handled, giving this story a really unique feel.

First up—this is the second book in the Fire and Valor series, and you need to read book one, The King’s Dragon, before starting this one or you’re going to be lost. That story does an excellent job of introducing you to the world these talented authors have created, and entrenching you in the lives of the characters.

Next—there are a lot of characters who are important to this story (as well as the series), but it’s actually pretty easy to remember who they are and their relationships to each other…or at least I think so. I think some of that is due to the fact that, just as in the first book, the story is told from multiple points of view. Telling the story this way has its advantages with more depth and a greater understanding of all the moving parts and character relationships. For me, again just like with book one, it does make the flow of the story less smooth until I got more than halfway in. Once I was deep into it though, the excitement of the events did take over and make the read easier.

Things between Tristram and Bet continue to evolve (*insert happy grins here!*), but you’ll also find that several other budding relationships are starting to form among other characters. This means you’ll find some interesting alliances forming as the real baddies start to show their faces, as well as some family relationships that start to shift. There are some new faces, the most intriguing being one simply known as “Dragon” who I just wanted to wrap up in my arms and cuddle close (you’ll see why).

With tensions rising with the young king fallen ill, issues with family (and not just the king’s family), and the increasing threat from enemies, there is plenty of drama to go around. There’s more to come in the series, so things are not resolved by the end of this story—though there are moments that will definitely make you smile amongst the turmoil.

Four solid stars for The Prince’s Dragon, and I can’t wait for the next book! This series is a must-have for fans of fantasy romance, and not just M/M…you’ll find other pairings as well, though Tris and Bet do command the most attention ;-) As with the first book, this story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Enchanting

Aside from the magic and fantastic world-building in this series, I think what I enjoy the most are the intertwined stories from each of the characters’ viewpoints. We learn so much when we experience this adventure from everyone’s perspective. I just have to share how much I adore Hafgan. He’s nothing short of amazing and the world needs more people like him.

“Take care of your dragon...and be wary of the monsters that surround you.” Wise words and monsters are hidden everywhere in this world. Good thing Tristram has Bet on his side and who knows maybe he has more than he ever thought. I really love Bet and Tris. They make me so happy and I love the light to the dark dichotomy of them. They blend well and whatever may happen, their relationship will never be boring. Surprises, surprises and more surprises will have you devouring this book and wanting the next one immediately.

Wonderful addition

4 stars

This story has really hit its groove and has me well and truely hooked. It continues on directly from the Kings Dragon and the events that happened there.

It took me a while in the first book to get used to the multiple POVs but here it works well, as every chapter is another thread woven into the tapestry of the storyline.

I enjoyed meeting more of the dragons and understanding that each clan had their own problems they were facing. I’ll be interested in seeing where it leads in the final book.

I’m loving Tris and Bet. They are really starting to work well together and Bet finally understands that he needs a new direction if he wants to stand beside Tris and Roland in the future. I do feel for him that his mother’s family don’t want to acknowledge him.

Can’t wait to see where the story leads.

A nice sequel to the first book. Also here the romance isn't a crucial part, but is present in way more pages. I love Bet and Tristram, but I also like all the other couples and want to see more of them, mostly about Maddox and the princess. Finally we saw Tristram transform into a dragon and if he was handsome as a man, he is breathtaking in his true form(Bet's words and I agree). There is intrigue, angst(a little), blood, death, love and much more, and I'm really happy to be starting the 3rd book.

Ps= Roland is a sweety and he deserves happiness. Do I see a potential couple with Bowen and Hafgan? Will the young prince and Dragon(Hafgan's brother) end up together as adults? Uhm I have this feeling...

Tris takes his job of Regent very seriously. Sitting through endless meeting is just part of his commitment. Bet would take his job seriously if he really had one. He’s no longer the kings assassin so he’s not sure what he is. When King Roland becomes ill both men do everything they can to save him.

I really liked the first book and gave it 5 stars. This one I wish I could give more. This story had so much more depth to it. Being told from multiple points of view allowed the story to flow more. Each person’s (or dragon) importance better realized by their view of the happenings.

Bet and Tris’ romance develops further. Actually several romances come to light.

While there are important plot points revealed I think this book was more about the relationships and their impact on the future.

Another wild ride! Oh, I loved the story development. It was taking us places that were really unexpected. And nicely done!
In my review of book one I had remarked that I found it somewhat strange to have each chapter played out from a different POV. However, now that the action extended much more beyond the castle itself, that made so much more sense.
I really have no idea how to tell you which parts of the book I loved and why without any spoilers, so I am simply going to assure you that I loved it and can only recommend that you read it.

Once again, readers will have the unique pleasure of continuing an epic fantasy written by the wonder team of W. M. Fawkes and Sam Burns. In the previous novel, the intrigue surrounding the kingdom of Llandgard is exacerbated by the centuries-long hostilities that exist between dragons and humans. A human mage possessing incredible power makes it possible to break the draconic dominance that subjugated mankind in the past. And at the present time, it becomes clear that the rift between both races must be mended in order for them to confront a common and formidable adversary.
In 'The Prince's Dragon: Fire and Valor Book 2', the killed (and dragon-eaten) King Reynold leaves Prince Roland to succeed him to the throne and the young king wisely selects Lord Tristram Radcliffe as his regent. In the performance of his duties, Tristram discovers that Reynold had been stockpiling weapons for war and the food stores are sorely lacking. He has to work hard to see that enough food is stored so that everyone in the kingdom can make it through winter.
In the meantime, young King Roland is mortally ill and Bet obtains evidence that Roland's uncle Laurence, the very one that betrayed Gillian in book 1, had been dealing with an herbalist specializing in poisons. Bet kills the uncle who was trying yet again to grab control of the throne then sets out to find a remedy amongst his elven kin. The elves do not appear but a dragon lady gives him a cure for the young king and her horse for Bet to make his way back to Llandgard. Arriving just in time to administer the remedy, young King Roland's life is saved.
During Laurence Cavendish's funeral, his son Nicholas accuses Tristram of killing his father to gain and hold the position as regent thereby ruling Llandgard when other of the family are better suited. Nicholas challenges Tristram to a duel and Bet is notified just in time to hurry forth with the announcement that he was the one that did the killing. Bet is imprisoned and the confrontation serves to make them aware of Nicholas's magical powers he hadn't had previously.
While in dragon form, Rhiannon flies Sidonie to the monastery being unable to make their way all the way home because she is ill from eating the poisoned King Reynold. Maddox stops by the monastery with Gillian in tow to catch up with his shield sister Rhiannon who he traveled to Llandgard to save. He encounters his father Rhys, not realizing that his father was encouraged to leave him and the Sun clan by his wife who is the clan's queen and Maddox's mother. This revelation causes him to abandon the decades-long animosity he held against Tristram for being the second child Rhys fathered and with the human woman named Elinor. It is at this point Rhys discovers Elinor was pregnant with his half-dragon son decades previously.
The monastery where Rhys and others lived and trained human children to manage their magical abilities is attacked by the enemy comprised of monstrosities made possible by the humans ingesting dragon's blood. The folks surviving the attack at the monastery are scattered including Rhys who makes his way to Llandgard to warn of the threat. It also affords him the opportunity to rejoin Elinor there and finally meet his son, Lord Tristram Radcliffe, regent of Llandgard. Meanwhile, Maddox has Gillian along with him and Rhiannon with Sidonie make their way more slowly to Llandgard with others including the children that were displaced.
Wanting to get a sight of a dragon arriving at the gates of Llandgard, King Roland talks Bet into allowing him to scope the sight. Cousin Nicholas catches both of them and uses his magic to propel Bet out of the window. Tristram turns from welcoming the retinue at the gate to seeing Bet falling to his death from the window and the sight makes it possible for him to transform into a dragon. He swoops in to save Bet but young King Roland is abducted. The leaders of Llandgard get a notice that young King Roland would be returned unharmed when the kingdom is signed over to the control of his cousin Nicholas who had cast his lot with its enemy.
Our writers deliver another incredible novel that fulfills the promise put forth by the first book of the series. In addition to the awesome world-building, outstanding character growth of main characters and secondary players, the book has wonderful pacing with a great balance of varying types of events in the narrative. The high-action occurrences are tempered by the quieter moments that serve to support the entire series arc through explanation, clarification, and emphasis of all elements within the many subplots. With EVERYTHING so tight and precise, readers are treated to a well-formed, completely thorough, totally credible fantasy story. Talk about excellent work!

Loved this even more than the first one. Now that I'm familiar with the characters, the back and forth between so many different POVs didn't bother me at all, and each single character's part of the plot had me hooked. While I love all the romances in various stages of development in this series (Yay for Rhiannon and Sidonie getting some... alone time, shall we say?), I also love that those are only a small part of the overarching epic fantasy plot with all its political intrigue, backstabbing, battling, unexpected alliances and whatnot stuffed into these books. Between all that and the very evil cliffhanger this book left us with, I can't wait to see what the conclusion of this trilogy has in store!

Fantastic second book in the Fire and Valor series. This time I had most all of the characters straight from the get-go and I was so excited to be hanging out with them again… despite all of the chaos.

Tristram and Bet seem to be the center couple at the moment but there are many other relationships continuing or stumbling around trying to figure it out. We get new character POVs and I love every one of them.

The battles begin and there are lots of challenges presented and alliances to be made.

Just a fantastic series that I must finish!!!

The first book does it's job to set up the universe and the main players, while this second book fleshed out so much of the world's context. Everyone has something important to do, some piece of the puzzle to solve or gather for the cause, and quite a few in peril. But I love how each crisis is handled in different ways, and those who can work their way out of trouble don't wait around for someone else to save the day. Loving these characters more with every book.

This second book in the Fire and Valor series picks up where book one left off - Roland, the boy king, is very sick and Regent Tristram is trying to keep the kingdom going. The cast of characters in book one was large. Most of the main characters continue to play a role in this book. Rhiannon and Sidonie are fleeing Llangard. Maddox, with Princess Gillian in tow, is searching for Rhiannon. Bet is still in the shadows trying to protect Roland and Tristram from traitors. Book one focused mainly on the human world. Book two takes us deeper into the world of the dragon clans. We meet more members of the Summer clan and are introduced to the Stone clan. New characters who seem destined to play pivotal roles are introduced. The book is told from multiple points of view. After getting used to that in the first book, I love this way of storytelling. Knowing the thoughts and motives behind each characters actions makes the book so much more interesting. Burns and Fawkes do an excellent job weaving the storylines together. I highly recommend this series. It is a well-crafted fantasy full of action and intrigue.

I also recommend the audiobook version. The dual narrators do a fantastic job of bringing the story to life. With such a large cast of characters, that could not have been easy. They somehow managed to give the main characters unique and recognizable voices.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

I loved it!

This is a series that you need to read in order. As soon as I finished listening to the audiobook of The King’s Dragon (book one in the series) I immediately purchased books 2 and 3 in audio.

After having a little difficulty keeping track of all of the characters when I listened to book one, I was able to keep all of them straight when I listened to The Prince’s Dragon, even the new characters who were introduced.

I won’t lie, this is a complicated story, picking up from where book one left off. I don’t think I can do the book justice in my review. The blub really is excellent and I don’t think I can explain the story any better. I will say that this kept me on the edge of my seat and I listened to it straight thru – except for the last 10 minutes. I had to stop so I could attend a Zoom chat with these two fantastic authors who will be attending Coastal Magic in February 2023 in Daytona Beach. I can’t wait to meet them in person.
