In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, global travel has come to a total standstill — and will likely never be the same. But have you stopped to wonder if maybe that’s a good thing? Writing this short “instabook” directly from isolation, Bruce Poon Tip, owner of small-group travel company G Adventures, shares his belief for how we can prepare to travel better by learning to see the world in a way that connects you with destinations and supports local communities along the way.
Bruce Poon Tip is the founder of G Adventures, the most successful travel adventure company in the world. He once turned down a $100 million offer to buy his business, so that he could continue to grow the company based on its core values: showing how community, culture & karma matter in business, and in engaging customers and your team. He also created the Planetarra Foundation, a nonprofit organization that offers social enterprise development.
His first book, Looptail, became an international bestseller in the first week of its release.
Sprinkled with environmentalism and disdain for big business tourism, while also shamelessly plugging his own business, the book does give some keen insight. I am amazed at the leakage that happens with tourism traveling. I would feel better about my travel spending if I knew that my money was helping the locals more than the millionaire. Not a complete waste of a few hours.
Beautiful short book (instabook). As an avid adventure traveller myself (been to 136 countries) I could wholeheartedly agree with everything that is said here. From the need to support the local communities to the negative impact of cruises and all-inclusive resorts.
The last trips I took, back-to-back trips to Ethiopia and Rwanda and Uganda, as the pandemic was only beginning to rear its ugly head in China, were with a company I had never heard of before, nor had my amazing travel agent, Diana Rolig, who has gotten me where I wanted to go and couldn't figure out how to get to for about 40 years. She found G Adventures, a Canadian company specializing in small group travel and owned by someone named Bruce Poon Tip. Unlearn, is an "Instabook" he has written about what travel may look like after the pandemic is under control enough that those of us who can't just stop will start traveling again. I wish he had written it and I had read it long ago because, while I tend to go to untouristy destinations, as all of my friends would tell you and, see above, I had never thought very deeply about the impact that my choices of locations were having on the local population--for good or for bad. I also would not have complained about the hotel in Ethiopia that had NO hot water...ever...
If you are someone who is missing traveling as much as I am, you must read this now.
Some excellent observations on the best way to travel responsibly but it seemed more of a statement on how much Bruce has traveled. I get that but it somehow came off as boastful instead of insightful. That said, I have done 3 trips with G and each was excellent.
This short read provides thought-provoking comments. Many people love to travel, but how many people think of how much good they can do by making simple changes to their travel behaviors?
