Haunting Truths We Must Never Forget.
This is a collection of stories
Tales from the Snipers, Spies and Tales of the World at WarFollow in the footsteps of the British, German and American servicemen as they detail the life and struggles of war in mysterious and foreign countries. Uncover their mesmerizing, realistic stories of combat, courage, and distress in readable and balanced stories told from the front lines.
This book brings you firsthand accounts of combat and brotherhood, of captivity and redemption, and the aftermath of a war that left no community unscathed in the world. These stories have everything from spies and snipers to submarines and air raids. A great book for anyone who wants to learn what it was like during the world war conflicts between 1914-1945.
This is strong and powerful tale of World War One as seen by men who where there some of those scene s are sad and makes one wonder about all people and how they treat each other there was nothing WWII in this book mostly the first world war, told from the Alles point of view still a very good book to read and get some idea of the first world war. Too many people know very little about these times, I guess there should have some of the German side but when it was written there was not much good will given to the other side. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about the first world war and how is was faught. Mostly from the British view has to be in the early years before the United States enter the battles this is for anyone who has an interest in this 'war to end all war's most people don't have any idea of how or why this took place, and how terrible the fighting was as the front lines went back and forth, with not much gained for either side. Just a terrible waste of life and for all that fighting and lost of life nothing gained.
I would recommend this to all and any wth an interest in WW ONE. A very interesting read in many ways.
All of the stories are heartfelt but some are completely amazing. The unofficial Christmas Truce in 1914 where British and German troops that had been trying to kill each other for nearly four months stopped shooting and met in No Man’s Land to socialize and play some soccer. To think that a valet for the British Ambassador during WWII could have allowed the German Army to destroy the Normandy Invasion, if only the German Leadership had believed the truthfulness of the documents supplied them. This could have changed the outcome of the war or worst permitted the Soviet Army to drive through and occupy all of France. These are just two the many great stories in this book.
The more stories I read about the men and women who took part in WWII the more I admire them. As a boy I hung out around the courthouse where the vets were playing dominos or checkers to hear their stories whenever the War came up.One of the main things they all impressed on me was how afraid they were at the time, but they all did their job. When I asked how the answer I remember best was, "I couldn't let my buddy down, or couldn't leave my buddy."
They weren't thinking of home, just surviving and not letting their buddies down.
True heroes are not wrapped in a flag ,they stare back from a mirror at the people who fought in these dreadful conflicts ,the living and dead should never be forgotten as a reminder that war is ugly and never glamourous. The stories in this book remind us that.
Being a depression baby and living through World War Two, I had heard about many of the actions described, but not in such detail. There were also ones in different parts of the world, of which I was unaware
This is an excellent mix up tales over time. Sounded like it could of been told at my mom's kitchen table before I went off on my own journey. Well worth the time.
