Jack Mars is author of the bestselling LUKE STONE thriller series, which include the suspense thrillers ANY MEANS NECESSARY (book #1), OATH OF OFFICE (book #2) and SITUATION ROOM (book #3).
This is a fun book and one that you're along for the ride. Is everything realistic? Of course not? Feasible? Of course not! But fun to listen to and enjoy the action and daredevil actions. Did I really like it enough to listen to book 4? It is queued up to go.
I love these books. They are like crack. Improbable but captivating. They are a step up from pulp, but not by much. Action and suspense. Come on. As long as you don't take it too seriously or expect Anna Karenina, what's not to love???
I really like this series the author has started, this being the third book and I feel the best one. The story is about a man,Luke Stone, who has fought for our country and still does, involved with the President in tough situations where you need clear thinking and quick action. The characters are fleshed out well, and I feel myself pulled right into every scene. Non-stop action continues as I read until the very end, with a perfect ending that keeps you looking for more.
4 1/2..... lots of action, held my interest and the characters are likeable..... Besides Luke Stone and Ed, I especially loved the Susan Character...... I'm thinking Jack Mars either has had some wise women in his life, or has a wise female giving him some awesome insight on what us females in non-traditional roles, have to deal with.... whatever the case - her character was refreshing !
Another very good political/action thriller from Jack Mars. As the title indicates, this is the third of the series. And, unlike some other authors of continuing character novels, Mars keeps the reader guessing with some twists, turns and more than one political back stabbing.
To understand the relationship between Luke and the president, one does need to start this series with book one. Took much is lost without that backstory and there are enough references to the action in that book that the reader would be lost.
Make sure you are free and nobody is demanding your attention, also turn off your phones. Now take a seat at the Situation Room. Black Rock dam 's all six gates are open and flood down stream killed hundreds of people. Who is behind this sabotage, is it China? Really understand Luke Stone and new Madam President, please read the first and second book in this series. Negotiations with other countries is lot better than having your finger on the button.
I literally both love and hate this book/series it's really good with action and suspense, but it's like a bad campy movie and you have to suspend reality to believe the action. but its good. and I still like Luke and Ed 😂
If you're looking for a political thriler that is more realistic this book is not for you. This is over the top with some improbable sections. Taken at face value this is an entertaining action story that moves along nicely with some well developed characters.
ebook Review – Situation Room – Jack Mars Rarely do I start a new series anywhere but the beginning, but this time I started with book three of author Jack Mars’ Luke Stone series and boy did it pay off! “Situation Room,” the third book in the Luke Stone series by Jack Mars is probably one of the best in the series. Intelligence agent Luke Stone, the main character, displays innate abilities at flushing out information from the unlikeliest of people and places in which they hide. This story is about an obscure American dam that is targeted by cyber hackers that leaves thousands of people dead. To make it worse, the government has no clue who could be responsible and why they did it. It is soon discovered that the attack on the dam is just the tip of the iceberg – as the terrorists have a bigger target in mind. With the lives of many more Americans around the country at risk, the President calls in the best at these types of situations which is Luke Stone. Having been the leader of a disbanded elite FBI team, Stone is reluctant at first, but with the country facing the threat of more domestic and foreign enemies, he takes on the sensitive mission. What follows is an action-packed narrative that has him traveling around the world finding and eliminating a good number of terrorists. However, Stone quickly realizes that the modern-day terrorists are now more tech-savvy than anyone had ever thought. With new technologies at their disposal, there is very little time to find and eliminate the terrorists before they accomplish their mission, which now makes Stone’s mission even more difficult. Mars craftly pens an exciting political suspense thriller, with plenty of action, drama, and suspense. He easily brings the reader into Stone’s personal and professional life and consciously synchs them in well with the storyline. I also liked how Mars developed the character of the female president, an attractive ex-model that has family problems of her own, just like Luke Stone. This made for intriguing reading. This book was a good read. Still deciding if I will take on another series though. If I do, this most likely will be the one.
Author’s usual interesting plot. A LGBA rant midway chills enjoyment a bit. But fast forward helps. Narrator is his usual good performance. 3-1/2⭐️⭐️⭐️🔆
Not the best installment in the series, this book is choppy, uneven, with so many flaws even a 10-year-old would be pointing them out.
The setup was fine, but the entire plot was not credible to me. Less than 1/3 of the way through, the holes are so gaping its hard to believe no editor objected to them!
An ex-military pro initiates father-and-son cross tracking technology. An AGENT doesn't know that screams "kidnap my son (again) to find me?" The tracker will surely become a pivot point in the story, but who cares, its clumsy and amateur and a step NO good agent would take. If one Agent can find someone with a tracker, anyone who thinks to look can find it. And with the tracker for that chip on the phones, you don't even need the other person, just clone the phone standing next to them in line, or switch a spoofed phone for their actual, or hack the app, or hack the cell signal... Definitely don't want THIS protagonist anywhere near MY security plans!
spoiler>HOW many days does it take someone to notice the 'terrorist' had the means to suicide the whole time, and waited until after the 'interrogation'? HOW many dozens of 'analysts' are working on the data, and NO ONE mentions the guy had his operation SO well hidden, but does all this work to implicate the Chinese? The previous book mentions the internal US actors creating the look of hostilities to support their own agendas and their own coffers - did everyone forget the reason for the assassinations in just a couple of months?
Will anyone tell this writer to stop trying to write women characters? They seem to be a foreign country to him. A whole page on the female President's workout issues - she's an ex model and doesn't know how to schedule that in? Or the benefits? Exercise releases endorphins, so EVERY time she's stressed, she would likely be doing something - a treadmill, weights, a bicycle... instead, she's worrying about becoming flabby? Just NO. And EVERYONE calls her Susan? Really? Model=appearances count, she'd be very attentive to how she's coming across, that would be first nature. Walk a catwalk some time, Mr. Author, and learn what it takes to COMMAND a room. Because that control of the room by just walking is what it takes to be a 'top model'.
The author repeatedly writes the President was always the most beautiful woman in the room, but was clearly not interested enough in the character or women in general to notice that "the most beautiful" is not about just features, it takes poise and command to 'communicate' that.
And the conversation between the President and potential VP after a meeting is ludicrous. These people aren't in their 20s, 'it looks like the military just pushed you around' and then an explanation of the thinking....is this a YA novel? He's getting into a power-pissing-contest with her? So the VP is going to try to macho-wrestle power from her, and neither she nor her staff had any expectation of that? Again, just not credible. The nonsense "he knows ev-e-ry-thing " about her - guess what, in the USA, if she even considered running for office, EVERYONE already knows everything discoverable about her, and plenty of fabricated stories, too.
This book has good sections, it brings truths some already know and most don't front and center, and its worth a read, but imo it is also more of a fairy tale than the first two, and does not deliver at the level of the first two in the series.
I'm three books into this series and I can already tell this author's no match for the others I've read in this genre. Tom Clancy, dead or not, is still king of the hill, followed by Vince Flynn, and it's a shame they're both dead. I digress, though.
I'm already tired of the plot lines in these books where the guy thinks he wants to retire but gets called back in and has family trouble for it, then is basically thought to be an insane loose cannon by the politicos until he's proved right (was tired of it by book 2 actually). He's apparently a known quantity, politicos. If you don't like how he operates, don't call him, and I'm long since past the point where I wish he'd say as much and tell them to either buzz off or let him do what needs doing without interference or being a constant doubting Tammy or Thomas or whatever. Of course, if he just told them to get lost, there'd be no series, so we already know that's not going to happen. Also, Mrs. Stone, you knew what your man did was dangerous work when you married him. Learn to accept his job and personality and the demands they make on him. Unfortunately I know that dangerous work really is stressful on marriages, but that doesn't mean I like reading it any better. As I've said in other reviews, I have little interest in the personal lives of these people if I'm there for a thriller. The author also seems to be too much a fan of kooky conspiracy theories for my taste and if his writing is indicative of his personal political leanings, it'd be safe to say we probably have some disagreements.
Fortunately I don't need to agree with everything the characters believe or their portrayal, or with the author, to stick with a book. They're good enough books to pass time and I'm at the very least going to finish the ones I bought. Whether I continue or not is something I'll figure out next time I have some spare audible credits. I know there are at least three more after the last one I bought in this series, plus at least one other related series, though I'll admit the prequel doesn't hold so much interest for me now as it did when I first started looking into these books because I'm not in love with the characters. I think once I'm done with these it's time to find some more favorites to re-read. I've been mixing in favorites with new reads the last few weeks.
Imagine yourself the first woman president of The United States, put in office by a terrorist attack that left the country in chaos and distress. Now imagine another terrorist attack on the country’s infrastructure, one that will not only bring the country to its knees – again – will kill thousands and do irreparable harm in the process. That’s how President Susan Hopkins’ day started and it would get worse.
When terrorists attacked the controls of a regional dam, the spillways opened sending millions of gallons of water downstream flooding unsuspecting family homes, tourist centers, and resorts. Thousands died, destruction was total, and the terrorists had just begun.
Jack Mars pulled me in – into Susan Hopkins’ personal life, her life as the first woman president, her feelings as she navigated the dishonest politics of those she had once trusted, and now another attack on her country.
I found myself wanting to take out several people and hug many others as I continued reading Situation Room. At no time did I have the plot figured out, nor did I see the end as it crept up on me.
That Susan Hopkins decided to use the skills of Luke Stone wasn’t unexpected, but the difficulties she had with her decision were. I anticipated those around her would applaud having him back on their team. Boy was I wrong. Reading this book made me think of the world we live in right now. Foreign governments interfering with democratic elections, social media being bombarded by Bots that look like real people, cyber attacks on campaigns for the purpose of exposing a candidate whether s/he did anything wrong.
Jack Mars brought me into the president and Stone’s lives as they worked their way through this situation and brought it to an end. Worth the read!

Luke Stone, the protagonist in this para-military thriller is divided between his perceived ability to save the current situation and that of his family. He is separated from his wife, but would dearly love to spend more time with his son, Gunner, possibly save his marriage. Still, upon a call from the newly installed first female president of the US, who is still sifting through the good ole boys in the "Situation Room" of the interim White House, he is back in the thick of the action. The good ole boys would prefer "just a woman" be out of there, but she is steadfastly sorting her loyal following--beginning with special project renegade Luke. Dastardly events are befalling easily compromised areas of the US all pointing to terrorist conspiracies messing with outdated electronic infrastructure. After Luke reassembles his team, he begins all all-out effort to discern the end bad guy and the timeline under which they are operating. No problem--he can pull out all the stops. The plot moves along with a good rate of speed; no time to beat dead horses here. Though this is designated the 3rd in the Luke Stone Thriller Series, characters are fleshed out well enough not to require back-reading. Stone continues to carry forth some humanity and mourns his losses. The president manages to grow stronger and wield sufficient savvy in the political arena to fully seat her power position. There are several edit misses, and once again, would rightly give a 4.5 star rating, but that's not a choice and Goodreads 5 stars is interpreted as "amazing." I downloaded this free book from BookBub--absolutely a winner--and highly recommended.
A cyber attack occurs on a dam causing intense damage to a nearby town and camp. The dam has outdated software which was supposed to be upgraded but determined not to be cost effective. This cyber attack is just the starting point as it is quickly realised that this site is only one of many hundreds that have been identified as targets by America's enemies. When the President doesn't know who to turn to, she turns to Luke Stone, knowing that he can get to the heart of the matter.
Luke is at a crossroads, wondering if he wants to continue in this life and knowing that he needs to dedicate more time to his son Gunner...but when the President calls, what is he to do?
Just who are behind the cyber attacks and what are the reasons for the attacks, when and where is the next target site and can Stone and his team get the answers to these questions before anymore loss of life?
There are so many twists and turns in this storyline that it literally keeps you on the edge of your seat. The audio book is brilliantly narrated and the storylines and narrator leave you not wanting to pause the story because you just want to see where Luke and his team end up. Does Stone pay the ultimate price in this assignment for the President?
This is an absolute must read if you love action thrillers with political twists and turns that keep you wondering if some of this indeed does happen in real life. A fantastic read. Jack Mars is a talented author that keeps you wanting more right to the end of the story.
I loved this book so much, I immediately started on Luke Stone book number four.
This is the third book in this series and my first series read from this author.
The story on this one was pretty good and did throw in a couple of turns you didn't see coming which is always welcome. You could feel the president starting to get more confident and starting to know how things work and what to do. I liked how she went out by herself and stuck to her guns. Talk about girl power.
In this one, you really got to know the hero from father, husband, and friend. The author gave him some emotions in this and I hope she keeps it up. There's a time to lock your emotions and a time to let them out. I'm a Navy brat so I know the difference and was its a skill. I hope the hero keeps going.
The plot was pretty good and this time our hero gets sent international which is different than the other books so far. What was interesting the author brought in the use of a tracker only to not use it after one of the events that happened. I wish she kept it added to the rest of the story. I think it would have added to it.
I loved how the author ended it as it could have ended there or continued because decisions have to be made by all.
Overall, it was one of the best books in the series yet and I'm only half way.
The first two books in the this series were action packed reads and logically I was expecting something similar with this. But I was wrong. This seems to focus more on President Susan Hopkins and the inner works of her new government, then it does on Luke Stone. Whenever there is an action scene required, Luke Stone enters, does his thing and then leaves. He is not the protagonist in this. And that is what is so disappointing about this book. If Luke Stone was left center stage for the book it would have been so march more enjoyable. As it was he was only brought into the story for such a strange reason and one that doesn't make sense as what he is suppose to have done could have been done by so many others in the system. There didn't seem to be anything special brought to the table by having Luke Stone come into the narrative. He did what he was asked to do and then left to his own devises. That's when there was some more of the action from the previous books, but it was just a little far fetched. As for the ending, some thing are better left unsaid.
Jack Mars wrote a novel so scary in its credibility that I hope North Korea doesn’t get a copy. It starts with the floodgates of a reservoir open dumping millions of gallons of water and ruining an American city. Since American modern life is controlled by computers when they go offline, things collapse. This is an all too real situation in which there is no electrical power and no internet. And to make things worse, China is about to get the blame when the fault lies with North Korea. If you have started the series from the beginning you know that the former Vice President, Susan, has assumed the presidency due to the death of the president. Confronted with the very real possibility of war against China, she calls her top advisors into the situation room. Not only is the former exquisitely beautiful politician inexperienced she us also a woman. When opposing the powerful men to whom she us politically indebted try to run roughshod over her, is she strong enough to resist their threats to ruin her presidency in order to install their puppet?

It was fun - unbelievably unbelievable - but fun. These books land somewhere between the wasteland of cheap kindle books and the skilled craftsmanship of Clancy, Rosenburg and Cussler. While many reviewers don't like the non-action elements, I appreciate them. I agree with Lewis that action without beauty, context, and complexity is uninspiring and shallow. I think Mars is getting better at story and character development. I, for one, am glad to see this. I am tired of the modern trend of books and movies that are heavy on action and special effects with little regard for story, characters, and theme. We have enough one-dimensional thinking in our modern world. I say "yay" to exploring the motivations, background, and uncertainties of characters making difficult decisions - while blowing stuff up. :-)
I knew this was the third book in a series but thought I would be able to read it alone. It does refer to the previous books quite a bit, but doesn't really affect the story. It started out so good, I immediately decided I also wanted to read the first two books so borrowed them from the library. It didn't take long before it started going downhill. It was a good storyline but it got more outlandish chapter by chapter. By the end I thought I was reading a script from a Mission Impossible movie. I immediately returned the first two books to the library, unread. It made me sad because I did like the writing style and the storyline was good, but I like a little reality even in fiction.
This series just gets better with each successive addition. Situation Room reminds me of some Tom Clancy works, which, in my view, puts Mr. Mars in fine company indeed. I'm keenly anticipating the pleasure of reading the next volume (Oppose Any Foe).
Luke Stone had told the President of the United States that he wanted to retire and try to put his marriage back together. But he had developed into a person that the President depended on to quell any attacks or problems that might arise.
When a dam suddenly opens and floods an area and kill hundreds, when the subways in Washington D.C. are taken offline and crashes and fires occur, and then when Communications between the United States and other countries is interrupted, Luke is called back to find out who is behind these acts and it is up to him and his team to take them out.
No boredom when reading this series! This time, Stone has to save the US from nuclear war and starting WWIII. He has to call back his defunct team to do it, including a breakout from prison for one of them. The author is revealing a little more about some of the main characters in each novel and I like that. He also shows them changing and growing within the framework of action and thrills. Keep 'em coming!
This was a free book on the Kindle store so I thought I would give it a go. This is the third book in the series and is centered around Luke Stone, who is the head of an elite, disbanded FBI team. The story begins with a disaster at the Black Rock Dam (which turns out to be a cyber attack) and then other events occur with pace.
Granted the story is a bit far-fetched at times, but overall I enjoyed it. I think I will give the other books in the series a try!
Outstanding Political/Action Thriller. A reader wrote "not believable" but I beg to differ. In today's current events, with the political scene taking a turn to the unbelievable, this story could happen.
Excitement buffet! When you think you have the story figured out, it takes a tornado like twist to the left leaving you hanging breathlessly by your fingertips. You're not going to believe what Jack Stone did to save the world... again.
The flood gates of a dam are opened causing over a hundred deaths and Luke Stone is called in to investigate. This thriller delves into political intrigue, terrorism and a plot for a nuclear strike against the U.S. A little far-fetched, but nevertheless this makes for an exciting and action-filled thriller. While a part of me was saying this could never happen, I was still engaged in the story-line and eager to see where the author was going with this. Good book!
