I devour the same books I enjoy writing: science fiction, set in an apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic or dystopian world. I love stories about regular people being thrust into extra ordinary circumstances, and having to rely on their own cunning and that of others to survive. And I love a twist at the end.
My just released Ashfall Apocalypse, as well as previous series Madness, Highway and Stone Age are those kind of stories. They're fast moving, have some regular (and amazing) characters who must make life changing decisions, all while the world is experiencing an apocalypse.
Besides writing, my wife and I travel the world (often to research the next book). But often you can find me on a beach, Kindle in hand, with my Toes in the Water (name of my publishing company).
Preliminary prepper story that takes place some years after the primal apocalyptic event of solar flares and coronal magnetic emissions. The world as we knew it is gone. Mankind hasn't even begun to realize the extent of the damage and destruction it now faces. Life as we knew it is forever changed. Given that this state of collapse has been spoken and written about for decades doesn't seem to matter very much to the few people still alive after World wide population and survival concepts become the difference between living and dying. It seems there are still some people and p!aces where hope and survival might be possible but getting there might kill you just as easily as all the radiation sickness combined with starvation, dehydration or some other form of violence. CICADA exists for that very reason. CICADA is to house and support the best of the best, persons who might be able to figure out how to keep humanity alive so civilization might be resurrected and given another chance at survival. It's an interesting idea and will appeal to some people but it really depends on your own beliefs, thoughts and feelings about the alleged ending of the world and what comes next My background in medicine doesn't mean I don't think this could happen but it does make it a long stretch for me. Given the overall description of the chaos and destruction of all our modern technology and the damage that only a very few people might survive to help remake the world just pushes my brain a little bit too far. A handful of people still alive and capable of defending themselves and others who might be less likely to thrive, and who might still be able to offer some service or benefit goes beyond fictional events and characters that don't seem quite real or likely to all be in a common location is taking me away from possibility and dumping me into the land of "not bloody likely". The first three books were fun and free of the all consuming hazard of shoot first and ask questions later populace. The books could have ended there with the overall game of reaching CICADA as a sort of maybe ending if I didn't have to think about it too hard, but both minor books took the overall story over the line for me. I lost interest in the characters the story just faded into background noise that I didn't care about. The pivotal people from the first three books were already gone and I didn't see the point of taking the initial idea into new territory and new situations. I'd been expecting to read more about Max finally catching up with the King family and finding out how they used the advantage of reaching CICADA and what that meant to their own futures and survival. Don't misunderstand me, the stories were entertaining but three books were enough for me. Without the benefits of modern medicine and other advances few people would survive for any meaningful length of time. We aren't built for that much degradation of society without hope knowledge, or dependence on societal norms. With that thought in mind I finished the book and put it aside for other reading pursuits. Given our world right now is still locked into a global pandemic, reading about the end times for fun and escape probably wasn't very good idea right now. But if prepping and survival are ideas that interest you, this series is a pretty good choice.
The end of civilisation has come about due to a CME. Interesting in that the effects include too much ultra violet light which kills many plants and dries up water. I think an abridged version would make better reading but I managed to finish all six of the books.
I really enjoyed this book. Kept my interest the whole time and was sorry to see it end. Believable characters some likeable others despicable and we'll done!
