After standing barefoot in the frigid Atlantic Ocean, fifty-year-old Shawnee Moon laced her boots and began walking westward, accompanied solely by Panda, the heavily-laden stroller she pushed along the shoulders of America’s roadways. This is the story of her remarkable journeys west, a story of adventure, discovery, defeat and triumph, of the unexpected and the unbelievable, of blisters and bikes and bridges and broken things and broken dreams, a story of love and learning and of lost and found.
I rated this higher because I enjoy these types of books and though I've never met the author, it appears I live near her. She walked to Wisconsin from New Jersey with only a stroller filled with necessities. Her bravery and fortitude were really amazing. She only quit due to back and pain issues. Then later she starts the whole trip over again on a vintage motorcycle. Learning along the way, she becomes a veteran biker and makes it from New Jersey to the west coast in Washington state, sea to sea. Her luck, tenacity, and adventures were just fun to read. She fulfilled a lifelong dream and gained a tremendous amount of self-confidence. Maybe someday I can meet this incredible person.
A remarkable story of one woman’s quest to fulfill her dream of crossing the USA on foot (… and by motorcycle). A triumph of will and the power of a dream. It is also an uplifting view on the generous spirit of ordinary Americans who help Shawnee Moon out on her remarkable journey. Complete strangers showed compassion, generosity and trust. A beautiful, uplifting story. Way to go, Shawnee!
