This was one of CC's novellas that tells of one of her main characters, and how they came to be a part of her main storyline. This time it was about Felix. Well, mainly Felix. We, of course, have to include Francesca and Faith, one an early companion, the other the more recent companion.
Felix is a part of The Six, the group that seems to be chosen to aid the new soulmates in regaining their position, and in helping them keep it. But Felix had some issues. His biggest issue was, he had no memory of the past. He didn't remember where he was born, when, to whom, or anything after that. Currently, being a part of The Six, his only memory is of Faith, how he met her and everything after that...up to a point.
And that brings us to Felix's second issue. He has a voice in his head that goes by the name Azrael, and that voice has whispered many things to him about his past while keeping him out of trouble. However, he brought his own flavor of trouble to Felix. He kept causing him blackouts. Blackouts where Felix would come to in strange places unaware of what he was doing there and what he had done while there.
Between these two issues, Felix was a bit of a mess. But he was the friendliest, kindest, biggest teddy bear lug of a hero in their group of six. And he was powerful. He just wasn't sure how.
And just when he thinks life is going along smoothly, his purpose clear, his guardian angel residing in his head his only problem, in walks Francesca, a blast from his past who doesn't remember him at all. As his memories return, hers don't. He is definitely at a crossroads, as is she, and the two of them could very well mess things up for their own sides of this apocalyptic coin. She needs to get away from hers. Quickly, as she is doomed to a life on the evil side if she doesn't get away, like now. For Felix, things aren't quite as clear. Francesca confuses him, but he has a definite place on the side of good, and if she wants to be a part of his life, she needs to leave her old life behind. He's not sure he can trust her to do that. This is when life truly gets interesting for the two of them.
This book is a lot of fun, watching Felix get his wits back, and it's also very tense and exciting what with all that is going on between him and his group and the harrowing job of getting rid of the old soulmates so the new ones can take their place in history.
I truly enjoyed this addition to the Paranormal World that CC Solomon has written both in full novels with the entire group and their adventures and the novellas that tell of each of the people and how they came to be where they are. It's an unusual way to convey an entire story, but in pieces, so in the end, we'll have the whole. I love the detail she affords each of her characters, showing how much she loves them herself. And allowing us to love each one for their own merits.
Felix was one of my favorites, and I'm so glad I got to learn so much more about his and his mysterious voice inside his head. Very, very well done, CC Solomon! Very, very well done, indeed!
This book was given to me as an advanced reader copy, and the review is in my own words and completely of my own volition. As always!
