Mistress of rebellion... Lucy d’Autrecourt Blackheath is liberty’s darling, embracing the fierce independence of her adopted father, the patriot raider, Pendragon. When a parcel arrives from England, unearthing a long-buried secret, nothing can stop Lucy from pursuing the adventure she craves. Despite the love of her doting parents, she’s never forgotten the empty grave in England inscribed with her name, and an injustice waiting to be put right. Yet, as Lucy sails from Virginia, danger from her past threatens everyone she loves.
An imperious earl... Dominic St. Cyr, the fierce earl of Valcour, drove back the scandal attached to the St. Cyr name at the point of his sword and snatched Valcour’s estates from the brink of ruin. When a reckless American spitfire barrels into his duel in the middle of a gaming hell, he finds everything he’s worked for in peril. Ruthless Valcour has little choice but to force hoyden Lucy to wed him—even though the defiant American despises him and his aristocratic world.
To set a heart free... But as Lucy steps into Valcour’s mysterious world, she glimpses the man beneath the earl’s façade. Haunted by personal demons, Valcour hides a heart too tender and secrets as painful as Lucy’s own. Can a patriot’s daughter enter the world revolution taught her to hate and set Valcour’s heart free?
A day of my life gone due to this book, I couldn’t put it down! The plot, characters and the amazing Epilogue. Beware all readers and plan ahead...highly recommend!!!!
So this was Lucy's story and it was as much chaos and shenanigans and so forth as one could wish. Definitely an adult book. Hurting people with demons chasing them... Dominic and Lucy were good for each other.
Wow! What a Fantastic Story! The Raider's Daughter will hold you spellbound as it comes to life with all the Intrigue, Suspense and Mystery with a web of betrayal and deciet that is spun that will keep you reading to the very end! Kimberly Cates has outdone herself with this novel, she has given readers a book that is well-written, filled it with superb cast of characters delightful dialogue and a strong plot that bring this read together perfectly! Her characters come to life as you find yourself drawn into their story. The scenes are so strikingly detailed it paints an incredible backdrop that makes you feel like you are one with the story. Valcour is haunted by the past and has allowed himself to not love anyone sense he was young. Lucy, from The Raider's Bride, is grown-up now but still finds herself in the middle of trouble. As she sails to England to look for her father, who her and her mother thought dead, finds herself in the middle of a duel. As she finds herself in the middle of trouble yet again she has no choice but to marry Valcour. Loved the actual plot when the author wasn't having the characters dreaming of sex or actually doing it. I think I skipped approximately 10 pages on my phone's screen in the one big sex scene. And there were a lot of pages of rehashing same feelings..what if, how can I, etc. The story itself was intriguing. Apparently you need to read a previous book, because the author only mentioned bits & pieces of Lucy's past, but mot all at once. So I only know her grandparents sent her mom away & Lucy was sent somewhere, maybe Jamaica, & was treated badly, & somehow magically reappeared in London, where she met her mother in a shop. Totally confusing. I did like the characters though. They were well written, & in spite of skimming pages to avoid the porn, I enjoyed the story. The almost end surprised me & the very end was a nice touch.
Taking place shortly after the US colonies won independence from England, the backdrop is set for culture clash. Put a young, brash American adventuress into a tightly regulated English aristocracy and see what happens. Chaos!
Her doting American step-father lovingly predicted she could start another war. She upset carefully orchestrated norms, exposed family secrets, and rebelled against people who didn't deserve it, but she had her reasons. Those reasons almost killed her.
Ms. Cates only hinted at the web of secrets and lies, slowly allowing the readers to put together the clues for themselves. I was enthralled throughout. My favorite thing about any book is a satisfying ending. This book had that in spades!
It was a good novel continuing with the raiders daughter, Lucy/Jenny, from the first novel. The first half was slow to build up. It focused on both the main character's inner turmoil a little too much and not enough action. I admit the characters were damaged by a parents actions and beat themselves up because of it. The second half was much better as we find the answer to the mystery of who sent the package to Lucy. The second half was better. Overall, I recommend this novel. It ended well and I loved the Epilogue as it tied in with the First novel nicely. Hope this review helps.
I love a book that shows two people who both have suffered trauma and learn to heal through their love. This author knows how to show complex characters, spin evil doers together with angels and find restoration of broken suppressed hearts. It is a lovely story that made me cry when finding them in pain and cry again when peace and love heal the many wounds. These books can be read on their own but have now read the first two in the series and it has been a nice journey!
For some reason, this story really caught my imagination. As soon as I met the hero, Valcour, I pictured Jeremy Irons, and that was it. I was hooked. Lucinda was an abrasive, brash American, so she could get away with a lot. I really liked the plot with its insane twists and eerie turns. And Natty was a hit! As so many other romances I've read lately, I think it should go through another proofreading. Recommended.
This is a really nice read. It's everything you could want in drama, intrigue, soulful heroes suffering from the sorrows of the world and a hellion gorgeous and brave. The old world and new world collide, the caveman emerges from the hero protagonist and starts a series of revelations and resolutions...enough to delight the reader and surprise the reader. You won't want t to put this down...even if you find yourself thinking at times, "will you two start talking to each other already."
I LOVE a finely-crafted tale, even more when it's carefully edited, and OMGosh how I love it when I can ignore Life and its fur-scattered floors and dirty dishes! LoL TRULY, UN-PUT-DOWN-ABLE. ALL THE FEELS, ALL OF THEM! TEARS, good, bad and a few UGGGH-ly ones. Necessary, though, or we wouldn't appreciate the beauty in Life. Thank you, Kimberly, for sharing your characters with us! Bobi (not Bill, heHe)
I loved both the main characters in this book. Lucy was wonderfully spunky. I remember that she was already spunky when she was ten (The Raiders Bride). It's always fun to see how someone turned out after meeting them in a previous book. And then there is Dominic, also known as Valcour when he is in his black mood. But if anyone can reach a broken heart, Lucy can, will and does.
For once the nearly ceaseless drama in this story of burgeoning love, madness and fury did not stray too far into the frustration at the stupidity of its main characters! I think so many such stories do so simply to increase the number of pages. And the epilogue is satisfyingly complete enough to bring so much drama to a close.
I was really impressed by this story. I enjoyed it. Lucy and Dominic or Valcour, it is their story. It has some weird twists and turns. It had me captivated from the start of the book all the way through to the end.
I loved the characters, the plot, and the storyline.
What powerful characters are found in this sweet book! The main characters are hardened by life lessons forced upon them at young ages. When personalities clash, sparks fly - sparks that turn into serious romance. This book keeps you guessing at what will be next.
A great adventure for a girl who seems to find trouble around every bend. Lots of action and twists you don't see coming. Great characters and well written.
I enjoyed the plot and characters, however, I felt the author was showing off with the vocabulary and style. I felt the author was trying to impress the reader with her vocabulary. Her style just didn't feel natural.
It was a long book, however it was worth reading. I wish I would have read book one however I probably got this book off a free ebook newsletter. There is a little twist of fate that is unbelievable. However, it is still a Goodread.
I've never read anything from this author and found this book as a freebie on Bookbub. Turns out, its great! It has all of the great book ingredients: spirited heroine, tortured hero, mystery & decent banter. The sex is ok too. Hope the other books in this series are equally good.
A well written book. It had everything that make it interesting. Suspense , Drama, characters that tore at your heart. Once I began reading, couldn't put it down until I finished.
I almost didn't give 5 stars. I thought it was too rough in spots. He acted brutish. Of course she was a wild child when younger. I think her Grandparents were cruel and vindictive.
What a marvelous story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was filled with terrific characters and a very unusual plot - very well written. I like interconnected characters from previous novels.
