It is winter in the Pennines and Thora is looking forward to Christmas, because, to her delight, Rex Tiplady has taken over as Superintendent of Braxton Constabulary. Less delightful is the humourless and vindictive sister he has brought to keep house for him. From the first moment that they meet, the small-minded Martha dislikes Thora and is determined to end any possible romance. Also trying to come between Rex and Thora is Barty Denwick, the journalist whose salacious articles have prompted someone to send him a threatening letter. He asks Thora to discover the writer, using the case as an excuse to get closer to her. The poison pen author is not the only dilemma she faces, however. A pretty girl called Ruby Pottle is about to elope and when she fails to return to the photographic studio run by Thora and her friend Amy Green, to collect her treasured prints, Thora is sure that her secretive lover has nefarious intentions. Mr and Mrs Ridyard are concerned that their missing, and soon to be rich, son has fallen into bad company. The police, who consider these matters to be petty and self-inflicted are busy with real crimes; they are sure no one is in any danger so refuse to investigate. It is left to Thora to discover where these young people have disappeared to, and if the police are right to assume they are not in peril...
Thoroughly enjoyed this series, the third book so far being the best. Hoping there's more to come with Thora and Rex. Lovely setting with great characters and interesting mysteries.
