A Little Me

Rate this book
From the star of TLC’s hit reality show Little People BIG World comes a  revelatory memoir that will inspire those who have long followed the Roloff’s and newcomers alike.  “A Little Me by Amy Roloff is a feel-good, inspirational memoir about a remarkable woman who addresses challenges head-on with a positive outlook and deep faith.” – New York Journal of Books Whatever package you come in, life isn’t easier or harder than another’s because you are different physically. There may be more challenges, but still, everyone has challenges.“God doesn’t make mistakes.” For Amy Roloff, star of TLC’s hit reality show Little People, BIG World, her father’s words would repeatedly serve as an anchor, reminding her of her inherent worth and purpose, whenever feelings of insecurity and inadequacy surfaced and threatened to overwhelm her. In A Little Me, Amy shares what it was like growing up with achondroplasia dwarfism, how she struggled to overcome obstacles both physical and emotional—navigating the average-size world as a little person, dealing with a serious illness as a young girl, bullying, and issues of body image and unachievable beauty ideals—while learning, as we all must, to accept herself for who she is. Finally allowing herself to be vulnerable enough to open up to others, she learned that it’s worth risking possible rejection for a chance at genuine relationships. Amy’s memoir is an inspiring and at times heart-wrenching account of resilience and the strength of the human spirit to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

I tried to like this book. I like Amy Roloff and was looking forward to reading her story. However, this book was very poorly written. It’s repetitive and feels very choppy. She mixes in self-help with her life story but the self-help part is extremely repetitive after every few paragraphs of her life story. It also feels like the her life story parts are not very detailed (that’s ok, her prerogative) and choppy. I kept trying to read it, getting half way through the book but eventually I got bored and decided to return the book for a refund.

I'm torn on what star rating to give this book because at first I felt like I was reading a rough draft that could have been revised and well written in under a hundred pages. At the same time, this was Amy Roloff's story and told distinctly in her voice; I felt like I could hear her speaking the words on the page as I read. Her incites into life are incredible with a recurring positive vibe.

I'm going to repeat the opinions of previous reviews:
~Love Amy and family
~I appreciate the sacrifice they have made to educate the public about dwarfism. I learned so much from the show along with being entertained.
~ Was disappointed in content...repetitive, poorly edited, cliche and aside from some details about her childhood, if you watch the show, you will already know about the struggles and successes she writes about in the last 14 years or so.
I would have liked to read some fun storys about the children, what crazy mishaps happen on vacations and perhaps how Matt and Amy handled difficulties of parenting. I thought swimming pool fiasco would lead to other interesting stories, but nope.
It's a book you want to borrow from the library. Still love Amy and I'm glad she is living, "happily ever after"!

I pre-ordered this book, I was so excited. Then, because I didn't want to damage my hardback copy, I ordered it for my Kindle as well. Imagine my disappointment. If the book had been properly edited, it would not have been so repetitive. Honestly, Amy Roloff is not a writer, so I wasn't expecting War and Peace. But, it could have been cut by a third. So much repetition, I began skimming rather than reading. That is not a judgment of the author. I love Amy and want only the best for her and her family. My complaint is with her publisher and editor. Very poorly edited. They did Amy a disservice.

It feels super weird rating a memoir with 3 stars considering it's...a memoir. But this one just reads a little strange to me. While Amy does share things about her life, upbringing, TLC show and family, every paragraph seems to be an attempt at inspiration. It could just be the writing style, but it just felt like everything had to point to a life lesson in some way throughout every single story told. Does that make sense? No? That's okay, it's 3 stars for me. 😜

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU KNEW MATT WAS CHEATING SINCE BEFORE MEMPHIS.

Even before I read this book, I knew when Matt started cheating just watching him on the show. The always self-centered man who had now fallen for the low hanging fruit Caryn offered him. He was the epitome of a egocentric man with a new sexual conquest. All his protestations about he and Amy having no common ground were just lies he told himself, Amy, and us. When the passion blows out of his sexual attraction for Caryn, he will be so sorry he gave up Amy. She was there when the page was blank. She took the risks with him. She bore and raised his children. Built the farm from scratch. Caryn was looking for an easy target and she found it.

When I opened up A Little Me by Amy Roloff again this morning after a long time off from reading, I realized I was about two-thirds through. I spent New Year's morning picking up where I left off and finished it in about two hours. I am so happy that I did because it brought out several life truths for me. Like Amy, I have faced some challenges in my life and put up walls to protect myself. Although my challenges were much different than Ms. Roloff's, I managed to see a few similarities -  health and moving far away from family and friends.

Real Life vs Edited Version of Life

The last third of the book spoke to me on many levels. When she wrote about the reality show and made the point about what is real life versus the "edited version of real" that we see, I thought about my own life. How much of my real life was an edited version that I wanted others to see? That alone gives me pause to reflect on moments in my life that were very painful.

Finding What You Need to Face Challenges

A Little Me shares a story of a woman, who reflects on her past, takes us through a painful moment in her life, and comes out the other side to an awakened sense of self. Amy Roloff used four things to navigate through her journey. Having faith, getting rid of the "what ifs", surrounding herself with the community, and realizing that she has value and a purpose in life is all she needed to make it to the here and now.

Finding and clinging to the things to navigate life's challenges is what we all need to do. With the grit and resilience she exhibited in A Little Me, we can all take a page of Amy's book and apply it to our own lives. Amy Roloff is in her second act, and like her, so am I; all the more looking forward to reawakening my purpose in life.

Thank you Amy for giving me that reminder.

Amy tells her story through her years in childhood, college and marriage. Her insecurity and negative self-image as a child with dwarfism kept her from making friends, sharing her opinions, and confronting bullies. Despite growing up in a loving family, Amy retreated into herself and assessed her value by comparing herself with others. After a whirlwind romance, Amy and her husband settled into raising four children (three average-sized and one little person) on a farm in Oregon. Millions have met this family on the reality TV show, Little People, Big World.
Amy was content in her role as a mother, but over time her insecurities set the stage for her strong minded husband to run right over the top of her. Their marriage crumbled incrementally as her spouse chipped away at her confidence and took advantage of her unwillingness to confront him. Divorce was not a word she ever imagined for herself, but this was the painful reality she had to accept when her husband found love with somebody else. Thankfully, Amy found joy as both a mother and grandmother.
Amy's story is compelling and worth reading to understand how little people live fulfilling and productive lives, and have the same relationship problems as other families. However, at times the phrasing was repetitive and the narrative got stuck in a rut. Amy made many references to the importance of her faith in keeping her going, but she never explained how it was meaningful to her. This is something which needed to be fleshed out. Nonetheless, I do recommend this book as a good read.

Learning about life as a little person

This book was a great read. I had a difficult time putting it down, even when I was tired, and my eyes wanted to close. Amy Roloff, the author, is on a TV reality show called "Little People, Big World." I haven't watched the show since its inception but I've watched enough to know that Amy is the kind of person I admire and want to get to know better. When I found out she wrote a book, this book, "A Little Me," I went to Amazon.com and bought it so I could read it right away. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the reality show and especially a fan of Amy's. I have come to respect Amy's inner strength and confidence and now I understand why she is the way she is. I enjoyed every minute reading Amy's book. I am going to look into other books Amy has written, to learn more about this incredible woman. In my opinion Amy is better off without Matt and he and Caryn should be ashamed of themselves. I also think Chris should consider Amy's feelings regarding Matt and Caryn's nasty beginning. Amy is, by far, the bigger person in that foursome and I don't mean in height.

I was fascinated by the duplicity of Amy Roloff. On the show, I was impressed by her genuine empathy and interest toward her children; and baffled by her unadulterated disdain for her husband, in front of their children, often times using the children against their father to mitigate personal issues between her and her husband, which should have remained between the two of them, never involving the children. How did she miss this? She must have seen herself on t.v.? And finally, I needed to get some answers about her pronunciation of the state she lives in; Oregon. She pronounces it OREGONE!!!! Gone!!!!! Wtf??? And worse yet, so does her son, who is a native Oregonian. How the hell do his brothers and sisters, let alone his friends at school, let him get away with that shit??? I’m from Washington. But still. Terribly offended and beyond confused.

I bought this book as soon as it was released. I am a fan of the show since I was younger and would sit down with my family and watch it together.
For me, the book was okay. I admit I was a bit disappointed and perhaps I fell into all the hype while she was writing it, but I felt that it was almost short. I was hoping to read more about the family growing up, funny stories and some struggles/triumphs they went through with the children that wasn’t in the TV show.
I think writing this book for herself allowed her to grieve, grow, and move on with her life in a positive way. She has strength.
Lastly, I would recommend borrowing this book before you purchase it. I liked the book but I probably won’t read it again, so I passed this book onto to my family.

This book was ok. She kept mentioning how she always felt she was holding herself back, listening to negative self talk, building walls around herself so people couldn’t get to know the real her, always trying to be perfect, etc, etc. I honestly got tired of hearing it. She repeated it constantly. Also, I felt she kind of threw Matt under the bus by saying he was involved with the farm manager while he was married to her. I felt her only reason for mentioning that was to make people not like him. She did have a lot of positive talk and suggestions, but once again it was annoyingly repetitive.

I loved watching Amy on her TV show so I thought I would love the book. The first five chapters were so repetitive I started to lose interest. I know she was writing from her heart but it was almost as if her writing was going faster than her thinking about what she wrote.
I would have loved to read more about actual farm experiences and a few more good times. I applaud Amy for putting it all out there and trying, but wish the book had a little less childhood repetition of stories and quotes.
I didn't care too much for "Amy's Thoughts" at the end of each chapter. This is all my personal opinion. You read it and make up your own mind.
Keep trying Amy!

I like Amy, so I wanted to read her book. It's not bad, but it is extremely repetitive. I believe she already shared much of the information on the TV show. She said she doesn't let people in easily, and I think that's evident because Amy doesn't get too personal.

When she gets a little personal, discussing her early life and her marriage and family, it's rushed, and there isn't as much detail as you would normally find in a memoir.

There was at least some proofreading done, but there should have been extensive editing. An editor would have helped this book shine.

I liked it, but I was a bit underwhelmed.

We get through life by not stopping to feel sorry for ourselves

I never really knew what had happened to their marriage. I guess curiosity got me to buy the book, and I'm so glad that I did. Amy like so many of us detach ourselves from what is really happening in our lives. I appreciate her honesty and transparency about her emotions. It's a good read a good lesson for women especially to forgive themselves for the things they don't see. And to accept the things that are beyond our control. And she is right, God doesn't make mistakes.

I love Amy Roloff and LPBW, but this book was a little hard for me to get through. I was hoping to hear more stories about Amy’s life and less about the lessons she learned from it. Maybe every once in a while would be okay, but it took over too much of the book for my liking. However, the last couple chapters made up for it. It was like suddenly her writing style changed and I finally felt like I was getting to see the real Amy. Definitely would have liked to see the whole book written this way!

I really like Amy. I'm a fan of the show and have watched it for years. I was hoping to see more of her personality in this book, but sadly, the writing style bored me so much.

I think this book could have been great, with more personal stories, her humor sprinkled in, details, details, details, and way less repetition and fluff.

I think this book should have been edited better, and more direction given to Amy on how to bring out her best.

Love Amy, but I find she is repeating the same information over and over. Also she mentions an operation she had to have but doesn't elaborate on what kind of operation it was. Also she mentions marrying Matt in Sept of 1987 but no date. I mean if your writing a book your sharing your life with your readers/fans. She says over and over about being different and sometimes her thoughts are all over the place. I think she should have gotten a ghost writer.

"I'm looking forward to seeing where I will go in life. Stay tuned." (274)

I did enjoy this book and I did learn a lot from it. I did found that it didn't really finish a thought, as commonly I would turn a page to a new thought, thinking I turned too far I would turn back and realized I was wrong. I thought it had good insights into her life.

This book was a quick read, as I read it in a day!

I would recommend it to anyone into Little People, big world!

This book is mostly inspirational with an autobiography thrown in. I had to skim over the inspirational paragraphs, they were often repeated throughout the book. The book takes you from her first day in school to high school to college and after to her 50's.

Since I wasn't into an inspirational book, I could only muster up 2 stars. The memoir part was good to read and overall an easy read, i.e. no big words or fancy writing.

I have watched the tv show from the beginning and like Amy’s straight forward delivery and adventures, so I thought I would like her book. ... but it did not live up to my hopes. The first many chapters say the same thing over and over and over.... so repetitive!! And the “Amy’s thoughts” at the end of each chapter are so cliche. Very disappointed.

This was ok, but the writing style was a little different than I expected and it seemed a little repetitive at times. I was looking more for an in depth of her growing up and marriage and life on the farm. What she gave us what little snippets and then analysis and repeating that God does not make mistakes. Quick read though.

Overall this book had told us as readers the life of Amy Roloff. I did enjoy how she told us about her childhood and how she went to meet Matt and how they achieved to be living on the farm. I am a fan of the show but this book just gives us more of a personal touch of what Amy had went through in her life and till what her life is now.

Interesting book how Amy Roloff underwent multiple changes in her life. As a child growing up as a wife and mother. How she handled her divorce and moved on with her life overcoming all the challenges handed to her. Light reading but Interesting.

Luv her outlook!

Very inspirational book. I know people have said that she repeatedly talks about how she overcomes things, but that’s the most important point of this book. Well written, and I enjoyed it immensely.
