Tribune Valerius Maximus and Centurion Marcellus Veronus, survivors of the Teutoburg Forest disaster in Legions of the Forest and decorated heroes in the subsequent reprisal campaign, Return of the Eagles, are back. It has been fifteen years since they donned the uniform of the legions. They are retired from military service and own a prosperous trading company on the shores of the Rhenus. Both men lead idyllic lives with their families and Germania is at peace. What could go wrong? Plenty.

They are unexpectedly summoned to Rome to meet with the Emperor, Tiberius Caesar. He recalls the pair to active duty and restores their former ranks as all is not well in Germania. Rumor has it that a Germanic tribe, the Frisii, are about to revolt. They are tasked by Tiberius to discover the truth about the rebellion and assist the newly appointed Governor, Julius Frontinius Gallus, in any military operations. Upon returning to Germania, they realize that Gallus is the cause of the Frisian revolt and will resort to anything, including murder, to stop Valerius’s and Marcellus’s investigation. They must utilize all their military abilities and guile to fight both the Frisii and the unscrupulous Gallus as, once again, the legions are trapped in the German woodlands by ferocious enemy warriors.

An outstanding tale!

The trilogy, documenting the adventures of Tribune Valerius and Centurion Marcellus, came to a fitting conclusion with this book. It was another exciting adventure, from the murderous politics of Rome through the duplicitous antics of a corrupt provincial Governor to the vicious fighting in the German hinterland. Highly recommended!

Nice

I enjoyed the story overall. I noticed a lack of substance to most scenes, almost like an outline. There were grammatical error but not glaringly. I gave 4 stars due to the author providing a comfortable read without detailed scenes of violence, as well as memorable characters.

Vol 3 of Valerius and Marcellus’s adventures in Germanic.

I’m always wary of a third book in a trilogy, usually I’m disappointed. Not a bit of it, I read it over three days, couldn’t put it down.! I shall keep the trilogy in my library and start them again on my next holiday.
Thankyou so much.
Best regards, Gil.

a well told tale that lines up with the known history

Mark Richards has woven a marvellous story around the historical records that are know about the Frisian Revolt.

This is a great tale, well told and engages throughout.

An excellent addition to the Tribune’s and Centurion’s legacy.

As with the prior two books in the series, a very good ready. Implausible at times, but the author makes you forget and enjoy the story.

Valerie’s and Marcellus Book 3

More intriguing twists to this tale, battles, politics and devious plots throughout. Onwards to book 4! Enjoying these stories immensely.

Ho trovato il libro interessante a livello di trama, meno per come è scritto: ci sono troppi salti di POV.
