Interesting book. Its my first by this author, and although the book was 70% sex and smut I wasn't overly bothered by it. I wanted more world building, more action perhaps, a more solid plot and information about both characters, but this is a short book, and it will be a 7 book series I think? so maybe the plot will be more developed and continued into the next books. The writing is pretty decent and engaging. This tells the story of Dabria- a woman kidnapped , raped and tortured- and Mishal/Nyre a dragon god that has been awaken from his sleep and locked and chained in a cell for over 100 years. They are fated mates, although he never knew that would be possible for him. Its pretty much insta love, they have a lot of sex, A LOT, and then they escaped and wreck havoc on those who kept and tortured them. To unravel a bigger conspiracy goin on, they set on finding the rest of Mishal brothers.
7 sons in number, all different and with different powers. So I assume there will be 7 books.
The god who tamed the waters to do his bidding. The wolf who howled the moon down. The sun god who lassoed the fire of the sun. The nightwalker who tamed the darkness. The changeling who tricked the world. The warlock who spelled time and space. The dragon who burned the world and rebuild it in his image.
this book by all means is not perfect, and it definitely isn’t a 5 star read, but it DID intrigue me enough to want to read the rest of the series. that and the fact that i’m not really critical of the books i read. if you’re expecting a plot filled book then this isn’t it. more smutty if you ask me. but the way he calls dabria “little one” does something to my heart. it’s the bare minimum for me but i can’t help it. not to mention the connection she has with mishal/nyre is actually so sweet. an ancient dragon god + nightwalker romance? YES
"Don't you see Dabria? Without you, I am living a life in chains."
So I was a little late to the game of this series and read these out of order. This is the first book in the series and the way Katie set up each book to prepare for the next is amazing! It’s hard to pick which one is my favorite, but let me tell you Mishal (Aka Nyre ;) ) might be my favorite. I know I’ll probably change my mind tomorrow and the next day, because I seriously cant choose haha!
Mishal and Dabria had a very intense and beautiful connection. Katie is great at writing couples(well there technically 3 of them right? Depending on how you look at it haha) with awesome chemistry! Mishal and Dabria both got thrown into each others lives at a time when honestly they both needed it, even though the situation and circumstances were not pleasant.
If you’re into the possessive, “your mine”, claiming alpha type of male then you’ll absolutely love this book as much as I did!
This is a quick, very HAWT, dark and romantic read!
15% story, the rest porn. I can't say I really enjoyed this book, it was a painful story to get through with to many gaps and while the author could have filled it in and made it a better read we unfortunately got lots of sex, sex, and more sex. It took from this book and it just felt like a dirty smut, now I love me a smut! But this book leans to much into that category, so by the last two chapters while we begin to learn about council and other supernatural it's a little to late to start making it a book.
heart wrenching, a gripping storyline and smutty. I’m in love with Mishal and Nyre!! Holy smokes those scenes were hot af!! my heart aches, I want to help them to get their revenge. they’ve both been through so much like my eyes fill with tears jus thinking about it… I’m looking forward to seeing where the next book takes us, I have a feeling that it’ll be filled with some heart stopping plot twists… I can’t wait!
One minute she's having a fun night out, the next she's in a cage. Pain and torture are all she knows. Then she is sent to be a monster's food or plaything and everything changes. Mishal and his counterpart Nyre have almost given up after 100 years of captivity. Then the little human is thrown into their cell.
Intense. Dark. Sexual. This is not a typical love story. It's full of blood and death, pain and abuse. But it is a love story. It's passionate and twisted. Revenge and lust go hand in hand. It's intriguing and best, Mishal has six brothers. The seven gods of myth. There's more to come.
Well, another book bites the dust. Thats 2 for 2. 2 books by this author that I have read and both books I have LOVED!!!!! Mishal, Nyre & Dabria were the dream team!!!! Their bond was so strong & holy hotness the sex was intense!!! The chemistry between the God, the dragon and the nightwalker was INCREDIBLE. I have a feeling this author is going to pull me out of all kinds of shells. I cannot wait to read about the 6 other brothers and their mates!!!!! The bext book being about the OG nightwalker is going to be so good! 5 stars!!!!!
Pretty average is what this is, with an additional bonus of detailed sexy times. If you're looking for a quickie, insta-love dragon romance, then this is it. I'm a little disappointed there wasn't MORE to it, and the way the characters fell over each other was...disheartening. Oh, the sex was good, but I felt a little cheated when they were motivated by the mate bond and declaring love after a couple of fucks and they're still strangers.
Overall, if this is the standard for the series, I'm afraid it's a hard pass.
Pretty much porn with a sprinkle of plot. Quick spicy read. I really enjoyed the supernatural theme. It was a little repetitive with wording though 4.5 all up.
Going into this I had no idea what it was about. I’m not one for reading blurbs from my favourite authors, I’ll just read it. So I was pleasantly surprised that this was in fact a dark paranormal fantasy book. I absolutely loved it! The dark tones with the paranormal aspect although it doesn’t over take it and then the creative and unique plot had me enthralled. . Right off the bat this starts off with sensitive content so please read the trigger warning before diving in. You will be triggered if you don’t. And I was surprised. Not the first book I’ve read in that aspect but for some reason I was surprised nonetheless. I enjoyed the characters, Mishal for me held my attention the most. How Katie has interpreted his “species” if you will was interesting to me. It definitely made me want to know more about his character, origins and the world in which he came from. . Not gonna lie, after how it started I didn’t understand how Dabria could be how she was. She just seemed a little too accepting of her predicament when she met Mishal, so it baffled me. But, at the same time I also understood what was happening and again it had me intrigued about what Katie had produced. Other than that I enjoyed the growth she went through throughout the book and she is definitely one strong character. . At times the details for the world build was a little vague but I was glad that those details were cleared up eventually. Otherwise I’m looking forward to seeing how this storyline develops and how it will evolve when the other brothers get involved.
This book will have you squirming in your seat and fanning your face. The majority of it is filled with seriously raunchy and passionate heat. It focuses on cementing the bond between the two characters and opens the door to more at the end. Are the 7 brothers also 7 mates? Can’t wait to find out!
No strong representations of diverse characters or minority identities.
Overall: 3.75/5 stars
Pretty Painful is a pretty dark book, but it's not a bully romance. While I enjoyed the book, I did agree with other reviewers that the Heroine was a bit too accepting of her situation... and after being abducted, tortured and discovering monsters are real... no one would hook up with a stranger.
However, discovering that she was acting on her paranormal "instincts" helped rationalize it away. In paranormal worlds and when magic is involved, I find that unrealistic behaviour doesn't bug me as much, hence the higher rating.
Also, I didn't realize until I read the synopsis of the next book in the series, Pretty Bloody, but this series is not reverse harem. Each book is about one of the seven brothers, gods of old, finding their mate and trying to solve who's attempting to kill them (and for what nefarious purposes). So, realizing my assumption was incorrect kind of threw me off the series. I might continue it, just not right now.
However, if you are looking for a dark reverse harem paranormal romance similar to this series, check out K.A. Knight's Rage!
First K.A. Knight book and first Fantasy Dark Romance book!!!
✔️ Dark Fantasy Romance ✔️ ANGSTTTT ✔️ Unique Plot ✔️ Character Build ✔️ Quick read
I’m completely obsessed with this series!!
The angst in this book was in another level.
I never wanted this book to end. I’m so invested and I want to know what is going on because after that ending I’m so confused but am ready for more of this dark fantasy world!
This was such a fun short angsty read that I recommend to everyone who loves all the things I mentioned above!
I will say page 1 is very trigger warning but it not in a lot of detail. Just trigger warning for the 1 st chapter.
I have never never read a fantasy like this before. So Dabria was kidnapped and was rape by these men. We do learn at the end of the book what the men and the scientists were up to . Back on track. They kidnapped her sister and that broke her spirit. Then her supernatural side was trigger which we learn thanks to Mishal (I will explain him in a minute) explain that the blood lines are awaken when they did it most. Honestly you will love th back story and I will not spoil it 😁🖤 I feel like I need to do a video about it cause its too good.
Mishal is a dragon god and he has 6 brother who are also gods. Now I love this twist about him. The dragon is Nyre and they share the share body. It's like Jekyll and Hyde but they love each other like brothers. I love th bind they have and what they share with Dabria. Now he is a prisoner as much as Dabria.
We learn that they are mates which gods were not allowed to have until now thanks to the Fates (we are going Greek here hint hint) they escape and they start to piece together why they were kidnapped and now he is search for his brothers to bring down the Council plan. They were created to keep the order but of course the Council have other ideas.
Dah Dah I am very excited
Wait until you read the 2 book that just came out TODAY !!!!!!
★4/5 STARS ★ This was 100% a guilty pleasure read and I’m not ashamed to say it. This was HOT🔥 It may not have had a lot of world building but I will assure you that it is filled with sexy times and heart wrenching scenes that just make you want to cry.
Dabria was taken from her normal life just to be thrown in a cell, surrounded by men who had never heard of the word “consent.” She lost it when they tortured her sister. After showing inhuman like skills while killing her sister’s rapist, she is transferred to a different cell. The catch? Her cell mate turns out to be a sex god who just so happens to be her mate 😉
Now this book is mostly sex. There isn’t a lot of world building. We also don’t really get many answers regarding Dabria’s captors. Then why did I give this 4 stars? One word... Mishal. I LOVED him and his dragon, Nyre. He was everything I look for in a book boyfriend! When Dabria was in a vulnerable state after finding out she was not human, Mishal was so protective that it warmed my heart. He watched her all night so the bad men would not take her. When there was danger, he immediately got in front of Dabria to protect her. Even though he is a freak in the sheets, he would do absolutely anything for his mate
The author has such a way with words that I was truly crying over how palpable their love was. This was a quick read but it was so satisfying. I’m afraid to read the rest of the books in the series because I worry they will be disappointing compared to this one.
I’m going to go find a dragon boyfriend so he can fly me all around the world Piece out🐉✌️
I'm giving this 3 stars because there was some pretty great smut in this. But if there was no smut, I would have given it 1. As for plot and world building, I'm pretty lost. The prologue is 100 years before, where a team (with ear pieces and guns) is opening up, what seems to be a monster den underneath a church that is filled with gold and priceless pieces. Later, we come to the conclusion that it was Mishal/Nyer's resting place and that he is the Dragon God. So where are we in the timeline of that prologue? 1900s or 2000s? He was kept in chains for 100 years. At first I assumed the reader is reading around the present, so time of publishing, 2020. So he was caught in 1920? But when I think of war movies, I think of those big phones or the box phones that have a crank on the side. So def not in the early 1900s. Maybe, 1980s? But then present time would be 2080s and I feel like if we were that farther in time, author would have mentioned something. So confused about that.
Also, they're naked for like 70% of the book. and I find it hilarious how she is riding bareback on this thorny dragon, before and after rolling in the dirty woods having sticky sex. It's too funny not to giggle at. I can't help thinking of the book Eragon, every time I read a dragon romance where the girl is riding naked, like how are her thighs not getting effed up from those strong scales yo.
But then, all of the sudden, we get info about a council? Did I miss that explanation? He explained it so fast and not in detail, I'm confused. Took me out of the story.
OH! Also gotta mention there is a lot of BLOOD PLAY in this book. Probably the series, so reader beware if they're not into that. Also, sexual assault.
Triggers aside, the plot is meh. So, so far I'm not really into it.
All right that's it! Why in the everloving universe do I not get my own monster???? I've put it out in the universe and even made my own vision board and nothing! Is it bad to be jealous of a character? Cause I'll be darned if I wasn't green with envy of Dabria.
So let me explain...K.A. Knight has an awesome series called Her Monsters. If you haven't started it you're missing out. Anyway this book is a stand alone set in that world - you don't have to read the Her Monsters series to read this. This book is everything you would expect from this author - dark, gritty, sweet, cute and hella sexy. Dabria is in a rough situation and has lost all hope , in a moment of desperate rage and despair she finds out something very surprising about herself. While still a prisoner Dabria is thrown in with a monster and it all turns around from there. Mishal and Nyre are all Alpha - dark, dirty and possessive - and they've decided Dabria belongs to them (lucky duck!). I loved the interaction between all 3 of them. This is definitely a fast burn romance and dang does it burn. The story is well written and develops well, although be warned it isn't at a 100% since these standalones will feature the rest of the brothers mentioned in this book. What this means is that it will leave you hanging and salivating for the next one but it does end on an HEA for the main characters specific to this book. Totally worth diving into...
**Spoilers** I usually love reading books written by K.A. Knight but this wasn't one of her best books. This book tended to be very sex-based. Don't get me wrong, that can be good in a book, but it tends to be the best when you have the perfect mix of a story and romance. This book had the opportunity to have a great story, the setting was there and a possible plot but it didn't take the opportunity and seemed almost too easy. The bad stuff had passed before the book even started and then once it did start, she was moved to a different area, and put in a cell where she had sex for a while and then escaped. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible book, it just wouldn't be one of my favourites. There is the start of a story in it and I'm sure it will continue on with the next books in the perspectives of the other brothers. If you are looking for a mindless read then this is something you may like, but if you are looking for a stimulating book then probably don't start with this one, there are a lot of more stimulating books out there that will make you ask questions - some of K.A. Knights books are some of them, just not this one. This book does end on a cliffhanger, but it is due to the epilogue starting off the start of the next book and leaving unanswered questions. If you decide to read this I hope you find more joy out of it than I did but it wasn't a majorly stimulating piece of writing for me.
This book was dark, delicious, decadent and all kinds of great things. It was also very emotional, and quite sad at times, but then there were moments of pure satisfaction and I am not talking about hot stuff, but murdery stuff. This is so beautifully thought out and so well plotted and placed in Dawn's world of Rage and Hate, I think all the fans will go crazy over it, like I did. But be warned if Dawn was not your favourite heroine, this is not a series for you. However, if you love Rage, you are going to love this to pieces. The main characters are Dabria and Nyre and they are basically pout through hell before things start looking up. This is a love story, but not your regular love story, more like monster love story with violent passion, blood and murder. A lot of violence. A lot of passion. Tons of passion. And so much love. This book is a fantastic start of the spin off series and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one! The series is best enjoyed if read in order and starting with Rage and Hate - Her Monsters series, then Pretty Painful (The Fallen Gods Book 1), Pretty Bloody (The Fallen Gods book Two), Pretty Stormy (The Fallen Gods book Three), Pretty Wild (The Fallen Gods book Four), and three more books have been announced and the third book of Her Monsters.
Love K.A. Knight! Amazing author. I’ve read at least 10 of Knights books. Den of Vipers and Stepbrothers Darling being my top favorites. Pretty painful was different side of Knight’s writing. Honestly I didn’t know Knight wrote paranormal, but I definitely can’t wait to read more.
**minor spoilers** Mishal is a dragon god - 1 of seven brothers, each a mythological creature. He was hibernating when he was ripped from his dwelling and shoved in a hole for over a century. Dabria is captured and what seems like trafficked having seemingly given up and no longer reacts to the horrible things her captures do, u til the bring her sister in and make her watch. Dabria finally “wakes up” and attacks her sisters tormentors before more come in to control her. Then her captures knock her out and put her in a hole where Mishal is hiding.
The character building was great, story amazing and spice 🥵🥵🥵

3.5 Stars I really liked this book. I feel like it set up a lot of things for the future books and I definitely think this world has a lot of potential. I liked that it was unique and that it was a mix and match of a bunch of different mythologies and supernatural creatures.
I also enjoyed the romance a lot. This book definitely was on the darker side, especially in the beginning so I would caution that if you are someone that is affected by that kind of thing. I ultimately enjoyed these characters’ stories though and watching their relationships progress.
The only reason this book did not get a higher rating from me would be because of the ending. I felt like the pacing was a little slow towards the end and I kind of just wanted the story to wrap up and be over already. The epilogue definitely did get me excited for the next book though and I will certainly be continuing the series.
This is not your feel-good love story! It’s dark, sexy, and intriguing. There is pain, loss, and abuse, as well as strength and endurance; it’s not your typical love story and not for the faint of heart. The main characters have to overcome some dark circumstances in a dark place, but together they make the most of it. The chemistry between Dabria and Nyre is hot! These two heroes may be monsters, but they are not monstrous! Passion…love…strength, I couldn’t put the book down! There were some unanswered questions that I had by the end of the book, but I’m sure they will be answered eventually during the remaining Fallen Gods series! K.A. Knight does not write fairy-tale stories, and this book is definitely in her wheelhouse. Nyre talks about his other monster brothers, and I like that they are all different from each other. Makes me look forward to their special powers and personalities…and the women that will be theirs!
