When Coralie leaves Mars as a fail-safe, she has no qualms about her mission. Without her augmented body, her crew will change when they traverse the wormholes crisscrossing the dark of space. Turn . Into what, no one’s brave enough to ask. Coralie certainly won’t. Until it’s too late. 'Leaving Humanity' is a 4000-word short story.
Anne Wheeler grew up with her nose in a book but earned two degrees in aviation before it occurred to her she was allowed to write her own. Fascinated with space travel from an early age, science fiction was a natural fit. When not working, moving, or writing her next novel, she can be found planning her next escape to the desert. She currently lives in Georgia with her husband, son, and herd of cats.
"When Coralie leaves Mars as a fail-safe aboard the research starship Triumph, she has no qualms about her mission. Without her augmented body, her crew will change when they traverse the wormholes crisscrossing the dark of space. Turn. Into what, no one's brave enough to ask. Coralie certainly won't."
This was such a fascinating concept and I thought it very well explored, given the limited page length of this short story. It concluded as I became invested, however, leaving me feeling frustrated upon thinking of how much more this incredible concept had to give. I wanted a full-length novel delivered, with Coralie and her focus on equations at its centre and a focus on her attempts to free herself from her horrifying current predicament.
I enjoyed this short scifi story. I read it through in one shot and it kept my attention. The telling of the story from the POV of the main character was consistent and stayed on point as she learned more about her fate. Feelings and emotions came through. The story was understandable and interesting. I do have to admit the math formulas were lost on me, but that did not seem to impact my enjoyment of the story. I liked it.
