The floral illustrations are all lovely, but the explanation of how to achieve the effect is just not good. The sketch part is ok as there are step-by-step pictures to show you how the author goes from pencil to pen, but there are no step-by-step pictures for the watercolour part at all - from the uncoloured sketch, we go straight to the complete colourised version, so I had no idea how to achieve the lovely watercolour effects shown. There is a brief text explanation but it doesn't help at all.
I enjoyed this small volume very much for botanical life drawing. She shows you how to break down a flower and draw each element individually so you understand how the flower is put together. Unlike other botanical books, this tutorial is based off using real flowers and photos of flowers to learn, so you actually learn which leaves go with the flower.
But rather than look like hotel art, she shows you different watercolor techniques to add whimsy and vividness to the botanicals. I’ve learned a lot using this book and can envision using this method to make cards/postcards.
