Laurel sold his soul when he was a young lad full of idealistic good will, and the devil has been waiting for years to collect.
When Laurel’s time is up, he awakens in a Hell he’d never dreamed possible. To his shock, the Devil has had a crush on him for ages and is finally ready to start a brand new life with him.
Another quirky Land story, cheekily reimagining purgatory that is so not torturous for this very lucky guy!!
Fun little read about the afterlife. I liked the couple together they were sweet. On their own Beryl doesn’t communicate and Laurel assumes everything and acts accordingly. I’d read more from them.
When The Devil comes to collect Laurel's soul and take him to hell, he's a bit baffled by the noticeable lack of fire, brimstone and pitchforks. That doesn't stop him being his usual mouthy, irreverent self and I took to him immediately. I love TJ Land's characters - they're brash, brave (even when terrified) and have oodles of character, and their protagonists are not what you expect. There's a lot of heart, cooperation and a willingness to learn and compromise, and, occasionally, tentacles. Which is a lot to fit into a short-ish story, but the author always manages it. Loved it and would be happy to read more.
Edit: I didn't realize this was a series. So that makes this OK actually if this is just an introductory thing. Original rating was 2*, might change or remove it after reading the sequels.
I really liked the premise but their relationship developed too fast imo. They were dancing around each other until Laurel went "w/e. let's shag." maybe if there'd been more of an outer conflict so that there would've been more of an obstacle for the two to actually get together, it would've been more interesting.
It's quirky and fun, but I'm not constantly laughing and being blown away like I was with The Bounty Hunter series. Honestly, I'd expected a bit more steam with thirsty Laurel and the monstrous devil.
I wasn’t sure what to expect but Beryl and Laurel are adorable together. The story is a slow burn short story but surprisingly sweet considering one of the MC is the Devil!!
I’m planning to read the next two stories so this is why it gets bumped to a 5 star. The story was a nice way to pass an hour and relax. It just seemed a little on the warp speed path at some points. However I was still happy to go along on the ride.
(4,5 stars) This novella was such a pleasant unexpected surprise. As I rule I don't expect much from the shorter reads that I stumbled upon as a freebie at certain point on Amazon because from few that I have read so far the quality of most of them was dubious at best. Still there are some exceptions, like this novella, when you get a sense of wonderment as stumbling upon a gem.
The story opens with Laurel on the brink of death and the devil coming to collect his soul, which Laurel sold to him a couple of decades ago. Finding himself in hell turns out like nothing Laurel was expecting. The devil does not seem too keen on tormenting his soul in any of the many imaginative and cruel ways, quite the contrary he seems a bit sweet on Laurel actually. Even worse is Laurel discovering that he did not even sell his soul to the devil but to a devil.
"Are you trying to tell me," Laurel growled, feeling his cheeks redden, "that I sold my eternal soul to... to some bloke? Not the High King of Hell, just some twat on a committee?"
But as baffling Laurel is finding Beryl, which is his particular devil's name, it turns out that Beryl finds Laurel's behavior just as confusing. There is mutual attraction between Laurel and Beryl but the bigger focus of the story was on Laurel adapting to finding himself in hell without much to occupy his time. He reads books, makes friends with various demons (and even discusses Pride and Prejudice with one) and is kind of bidding his time until Beryl reveals what he plans to do with his soul.
I truly enjoyed both Laurel and Beryl's characters. Laurel's life might not have been the easiest one, but it did not make him jaded, instead he was scrappy, defiant and funny. Beryl despite being a devil seemed to have a strong sense of justice.
This was such a humorous and I would dare to say hopeful take on the afterlife. I loved the idea that the souls (except maybe the darkest ones) had options and choices in what came next for them. That just like in life there was nothing completely predetermined in the afterlife.
Themes: single POV, devil/human, death, hell, afterlife
This must require a type of humor that I simply cannot grasp. There was no explanation as to why the Devil would be interested in this particular Human. I am glad Laurel saved his brother for that short time but others do as much every day. It does not appear to be Laurel's personality, etc. Now as I said, I am missing the point. If you can enjoy it then it's a light read for an hour or so.
A neat idea, an interesting take on the 'going to hell' process. I found it quite interesting at times, even humorous, but I also found a wee bit slow now and then. I'd call it an ok read.
