National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but she grew up in a small town in Indiana. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a newspaper ad salesperson, a television talk show host, a college teacher, a public relations professional, and a motivational speaker. In that capacity, she was named by Sharing Ideas Magazine as “one of the top 25 speakers in the world.”
Slan's work has appeared in five of the New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and one of those became a television show. She is the author of nearly 80 books, nonfiction and fiction, including Death of a Schoolgirl, which won the 2013 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence.
Joanna's personal essays have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and one was made into a television program on the Pax Network. The college textbook Joanna wrote—Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience—has been praised as an invaluable resource by Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter and endorsed by Toastmasters, International.
RT Book Reviews has called Joanna “one of mystery’s rising stars.” Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death—was an Agatha Award finalist. It features Kiki Lowenstein, a spunky single mom who lives in St. Louis. The sixth book in that series will be released Summer 2013.
Kirkus Reviews has said, “Slan’s mysteries are most valuable for the well-developed characters and the issues they raise.” RT Book Reviews has said, “Kiki is so darn entertaining that she’ll keep readers hooked.” A series of short stories featuring Kiki are available on Kindle.
Joanna’s newest series—The Jane Eyre Chronicles—began with Death of a Schoolgirl (Berkley) and continues with the release of Death of a Dowager. The series features Charlotte Brontë’s classic heroine Jane Eyre as an amateur sleuth.
As “Lila Dare,” Joanna has penned the fourth book in the Southern Beauty Shop series—Wave Good-bye.
Joanna is married to David Slan. The Slans live on Jupiter Island, Florida.
Holidays are not my thing, but The Secret Santa is awesome! The White Elephant is a great short story. It just ends too soon! A Treasure Map to Love was sweet. Loved The Hand-Lettering The Turtle Hater is especially good. LOVED The Missing Coin! The Lilac Festival is lovely.
great short stories that tie the different bigger novels together. love reading about Kiki and her family and friends. it is also a nice aspect that Slan includes the social issues within the stories without being too in your face about them.
This collection is meant for someone who has read many of the Kiki Lowenstein books. They can be read without having read the mysteries, but there is an assumption of relationship progression understanding. For example, I had only read book two. Kiki had met Detective Detweiller, but in reading these short-stories I’ve had a whirlwind through their relationship.
There are fourteen short stories listed in the blurb (#12 is missing in the count). There are actually more in the collection! I say, “Bonus!!”
These stories are wonderful addition forays into the lives of people you count as your friends – and if you are invested in a series, they are your friends. They are vignettes that encourage us to take the time to appreciate those we love, to create positivity in the world around us, and to find that positivity that is out there for us to find. I found this to be a mood lifter!
Now that’s not to say it was preachy, slow, or boring. After all, Kiki, Mert, Dodie, and the rest of the gang won’t allow that to happen. There is plenty of action, laughs, food, and Dr. Pepper.
The only semi-negative I would mention is that at times it seemed to be a ZenTangle commercial. Since I had never heard of this particular off-shoot of paper crafting, I was compelled to do a bit of Googling.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Authors XP, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF KIKI LOWENSTEIN, COLLECTION 1 Series: Kiki Lowenstein Scrap-n-Craft Category /Genre: Cozy Mystery, Short-story Anthology Recommended for: 14+ Grammar/editing: received as an unedited ARC Received from: Joanna Campbell Slan
Kiki has become one of my favorite characters, she has many good qualities and she goes through so many difficulties with a very positive attitude. Ms Slan gives all of us insight into some sensitive subject matters with open minded opinions. Some stories make me cry, most are funny but some are so maddening you want everyone to get what they deserve. This collection of short stories filters within the solid 14 book arc. And the stories are rich and life fulfilling. I love reading about Kiki’s further adventures!!
