A lonely woman from a faraway world. A lonely man returning from a faraway continent. A fated meeting between hunter and chef that gave rise to an unlikely partnership–and eventually, the opening of a little restaurant. It’s been five decades since the establishment of Western Cuisine Nekoya, and three decades since its door first opened onto another world. And so it goes every Saturday, as the bell rings and the customers flood in…
While I could keep reading this series well into the future, I can see how five volumes are enough to tell a satisfying story. Five books give a good sense of the restaurant's atmosphere and menu as well as it's history and the history of the world it connects to.
This volume (and this series) does not disappoint. Once again we get what appear to be just stories with a focus on the food the characters eat. But through each of those and several volumes we have learned about the other world, some of its history, its current events, and how Western Cuisine Nekoya has been part of it. This time we get to learn a bit about the current Master and his past and the founding of the Restaurant to Another World as well.
This is a very fun series. I bought the first book as a lark, and enjoyed it a lot.
In Volume four, we get more tales of the various Customers who come every Saturday to Western Cuisine Nekoya. Also we get a bit more backstory about how the Restaurant came to be, and the first master. As always the food sounds delicious, and the various chapters also reveal a bit about the other world operates.
I can't wait to read volume five, and watch season two of the Anime.
This continues to be a wonderful isekai story that's got world building, but also relaxing so you get to know the various characters and the world they come from. It's sad that the next volume appears to be the last one published.
Same issues than the previous, that hateful, vulgar, cheap family and the petty Ellen character. I wish they dissappear. Other than that, a fun read overall will make you hungry for sure! Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!!
World building continues to get woven in, as we begin to see more recurring characters. It's just enough to keep things fresh even when you have the repetitive slice of life formula.
Much like previous volumes the book contains of several short stories each focussing on a different character and their favorite meal. Through recurring characters and flashbacks we get several overarching stories, details on the world and the Restaurant to Another World (in this case its origin and source of the magic). Personally I really enjoy the series due its characters and find it a good read despite its lack of an overarching plot or deep stories. Its everyday charm is probably what is drawing me into the books. All in all, a solid addition that fitted expectations.
So full disclosure, you have to like "slice of life" slow stories. And food porn. It reads more like a collection of very short stories than a traditional novel but it is a fun read. Lovers of manga/anime, the food network, fantasy and lit/web novels will enjoy it. There is also an anime and manga of it as well.
Series continues to be a wonderful feel-good collection of vignettes. Loose elements of metaplot given to us as we are served up a delicious collection of food-centred short stories. Really, what is not to like? Especially as many can't eat out due to various lockdowns, this is the other world we all want to be in.
