Recently widowed Sara Ness moves to Cliffside Bay to hide from her painful past and the scandal that cost her far too much. With a baby daughter to raise alone, the peaceful privacy of small town life, and the comfort of the local grief support group, are just what the heiress needs. But when her inheritance is jeopardized by her new marital status, Sara is forced to make a deal with the only suitable candidate available. And for the next year she's paying for the pleasure of pretending to be married to the one man in town she simply cannot stand.
In the wake of his wife's death, architect David Perry accepts a job at Wolf Enterprises and promptly moves his children to be near what's left of their family. Though work and the kids are more than enough to fill David's days, his quiet, lonely nights force him to seek the help of the local grief support group. And when the spoiled Sara Ness proposes a partnership that promises to be lucrative for them both, David agrees to her terms and discovers that his fake bride just might hold the key to his future happiness.
The final installment of the wildly popular Cliffside Bay Series weaves a heartwarming enemies-to-lovers meets marriage-of-convenience tale in the style readers have grown to expect from USA Today bestselling author Tess Thompson, with richly developed characters, a setting to marvel at, and the ultimate life lesson about true love's never-ending ability to bridge the gaps that we frequently allow to divide us.
Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.
Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.
She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.
Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.
She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.
She adores hearing from readers, so don’t hesitate to say hello or sign up for her newsletter: http://tesswrites.com/. You’ll receive an ebook copy of her novella, The Santa Trial, for your efforts.
I was a newbie to Cliffside Bay before this story and also pretty new to the author herself, but I can tell you right now that I will never not read a Tess Thompson story ever again!
One of the things that sticks for me about this book is the sheer emotion it brought out in me. I felt everything. I was invested in it all. I felt like these people were my people and it was all happening around me. Magic …
Tess is a gifted storyteller. I’ve only read a few of her books but my gut is never wrong. This woman is super talented and diverse in her talent. With this story, she brought two widowed people together to forge a path together where they thought there would never be a path again. Magic …
Both Sara and David carried such heavy hearts that I honestly did not think a HEA could possibly happen. Magic …
I know I keep saying ”Magic …” after practically every sentence lol but there just is no other way to convey what I just read. If you’re not reading this author, I just don’t know ….
Departed: David and Sara (Cliffside Bay #10) by: Tess Thompson
From the first teardrop to the last goodbye Cliffside Bay has laid claim to every little piece of my heart. Thompson uses heartbreakingly real scenarios as a reminder of just how strong a heart can be. Departed continues that legacy of hope and courage. Through the ghosts of pain and the loss of hope, two grieving strangers find the strength to step out of the heartache and into the healing power of love. KLEENEX IS A MUST! After all every heart deserve a good cry. It helps refresh the soul.View all my reviews
Fans of the Cliffside Bay series have been clamoring for this tenth book in the series and it's finally here! Departed is David and Sara's story. Through an interesting turn of events the two agree it would benefit both of them to be married. The story is endearing as these two individuals, who aren't' even really friends, find out how much they really have in common and they are both surprised at the attraction that develops between them. As the saying goes-don't cry because its over, smile because it happened. Upon finishing David and Sara's story, I was moved to tears with the emotions evoked by ending. Yet my heart is smiling to have once again returned to the beautiful Cliffside Bay. Cliffside Bay is a small-town where the community members have built true and lasting friendships. Tess Thompson has a way of writing these characters so the reader feels as though they are simply visiting with friends in each book. Departed is scheduled to be the last book at the series and I loved how Tess pays tribute to each couple at the end of the story. I highly recommend this story and the entire Cliffside Bay series.
After the death of her husband Sara was struggling to deal with the aftermath but the grief counseling group she attended allowed her to meet other people who were in the same situation and one of the people there was David.
David has endured a devastating loss of his own and is finding it difficult trying to balance his career and his children. He and Sara originally met on a professional basis, but it was only due to them spending time together in the group that they realized that they are more alike than different.
When Sara needs a husband with an expiry date, she suggests an arrangement with David that would solve both their problems but when feelings become involved will it end in heartbreak or the happy ever after they both deserve?
This story takes you an emotional journey that will not only break your heart but inspire you as well. Sara and David both bear the emotional scars of the past but with the help of each other and the other residents in Cliffside they may just heal from the past and have hope for the future.
I saw where it said this is Cliffside Bay Series book #10 and I’m thinking, has it really been 10 books!? I love the Cliffside Bay group of friends and I’m sad to see them go but I do love the connection with the new Emerson Pass series, of which I’ve read the first two books that have been released and loved them! Anyway, back to Departed. I’m not normally a fan of fake marriage books. I tend to avoid them actually. But in this case I knew I had to suck it up and read this because it’s Cliffside Bay! I needed to know what was happening with David and Sara! I liked this book and I liked how they mixed their families. It was heartwarming and a great ending to the series. Sara and David have both been through so much and neither of them think they will ever find love again, they aren’t sure if they want to. But then their fake marriage leads to real feelings. Another great book by Tess Thompson about the Cliffside Bay crew!
This final book in Cliffside Bay series is like a precious gem in an intricate piece of jewelry. It leaves you in awe. Just beautiful sweet and emotional love story. It's not only second chance love, it's also David and Sara's common heartwrenching past experiences, grief, insecurities. I absolutely loved their full of twists journey. Tess Thompson done an incredible job writing this story, especially how families blend, such a unbreakable bond between those people. It had me in tears quite a few times. Happy tears! Loved being in this beautiful small town where the most amazing people live. It was like visiting family and old friends. Literally! All the awesome characters from previous books made an appearance in this book one way or other. I highly recommend to read entire series to get a full understanding and whole picture, though you can read it as a standalone and missing those blissful moments from other books.
Beautiful ending to an amazing series. This book will have you in tears.
When I first started the Cliffside Bay Series I never knew I could grow to love so many characters as if they were my friends and family. However, Author Tess Thompson has an amazing writting style that pulls you into her stories and has you feeling happy, sad, scared and excited with each and every character.
Departed focuses on David and Sara. Two people who have been through hell and back and are just trying to make it through the day. When they start going to a grief support group they were angry and closed off, after just a few weeks their lives grow so much.
Thank you to Ms. Thompson and her publisher for allowing me to express my honest opinion of this story.

This was another delightful story set in lovely Cliffside Bay. Filled with characters we have already met, and the newest couple. David and Sara. These 2 enter into a false marriage in order to inherit a huge sum of money. Of course, Sara is already loaded so it will be used to set up a foundation to help those less fortunate. Every time I revisit Cliffside Bay I think it's my favorite trip, and this one was no different. I enjoyed it immensely. As always, a good time filled with family, friendship, and love.
“ But I’ll tell you what -since moving here, I’m amazed by the kindness and generosity of so many people” That statement is the magic that makes Cliffside Bay not only a destination but a state of mind. This is Sara and David’s story and the latest and final ( don’t say it) addition to this series.
I held off reading this last book in the series for as long as I could as I really enjoyed the series. I read it and loved it, of course. A fitting book and end to the series. Sigh. ;)
I adore this book. All of Tess Thompson's books are captivating, but this one drew me in a bit more. I believe it had to do with the fact that David wasn't a macho man jerk. His feelings for not just his family but others is wonderful.
What I really love about reading a series is that I get so invested in the characters. I have LOVED reading the Cliffside Bay series so very much. Each book has focused on a couple with challenges and obstacles that seemed to be too large to overcome but true love conquers all. This series has characters who are like family to each other and have become a fictional family to me. They all pull together to bring each couple through the fires and make them stronger together. "Departed" is the last book in the series and it's about David and Sara. Two people, who have endured unthinkable tragedies, finding themselves drawn to each other in spite of their initial dislike of the other. "We have all the worst stuff in common, but maybe we can help each other because of it."
I have been drawn to the main characters, David and Sara from the prior novels. Their story is one that had me hoping against hope for them to find a way through their pasts and self protection to open their hearts for a future with each other. Ms. Thompson has a way she puts sizzle and sparks between the characters and I couldn't stop reading. From the way Sara and David's lives are brought together to the development of their relationship....I was in it with them. I fell in love with these people and felt like I was part of the "family" as they worked through the circumstances they were in. The co-characters were woven into the story beautifully. Ms. Thompson brings each of the former couples into this book and blends them all into one final novel that is so wonderfully fulfilling. I loved each and every one.
There were so many lines in the book that reveal the talent of Tess Thompson in her writing. Some of my favorite ones are these:
"We're made to love, not hate. Take it from me, holding on to the past means you can't live in the present." "A masterpiece in motion. The perfect design in a living woman. No matter how hard he tried, God's creations would always beat the ones of his own imagination." "But the one thing I've always known is that family matters more than anything else. We're family here, some by blood and others by heart."
Ms. Thompson writes with heartfelt passion. Every single character is filled with emotions and stories that pull at my heart. The emotions are there from the amazing way Tess Thompson creates word stories in her books. Stories that draw you in and make you feel a part of them. The setting of Cliffside Bay is a seaside community I long to visit and spend time in. I had this exact honor by reading this incredible series. I want to thank Ms. Thompson and I have sincerely enjoyed being in Cliffside Bay with these wonderful characters. What a great escape! All thoughts and opinions in this review are my heartfelt own.
Love is a magical thing. From beginning to end you are there for each other. You see only the beauty. In the Cliffside Bay series I often wonder, do they all truly see each other this way. As perfect. Men with big muscles, toned bodies, perfect husbands. Women with the perfect bodies, tone, beautiful. Often one of the people in these relationship is broken. Has baggage. Lots of problems. But to each other they are perfection. Is that what true love is? Seeing only the best in your partner? Only that they are perfect. Sure they have arguments. Some more serious than others. But they never leave. They are always there for each other. Yes, it’s perfection. Love is truly grand...
This book gives you a look into the life of David and Sara. Each has been deeply hurt. Each has lost a partner. They have children. Sara gets news that could change her life. She could do so much good. But she needs a husband. Enter David. The perfect, handsome, yet broken, David. Together they can do anything. Apart they are hopeless. Theirs is a love story that you will not forget. It will take you on a journey of the soul. From the beautiful children each has to the love they could possibly find if only they can see it. If only each had not been hurt so deeply.
This book gives you a look into the lives of all the couples in Cliffside Bay. A walk down memory lane in a way. As each couple comes together to see the grand opening of The Oar. It had burned down but is being rebuilt and will be the new beginning for the younger generation coming up. More babies will be born and the town will continue to grow. New people are introduced yet this is the last book in this series. I hate to see it end but have to say this was the perfect way to write the ending. This book touched my heart. The love it radiates. The feelings between each couple. It’s like you are right there with them. Through it all you root for them to succeed. To have the life each wants and deserves. It’s such a good feeling.
This is a wonderful read. It made me do so much crying. Happy tears. Sad tears. Scared tears and new beginning tears. This book was totally awesome. Great job by a great author, Tess Thompson.
I give this book 5/5 stars and a very high recommendation. Read, cry, enjoy and take this journey with plenty of tissues.
Departed is the tenth book of the Cliffside Bay series. It’s a heartwarming small-town second-chance romance about two widowed people, David Perry and Sara Ness.
When Sara’s husband had been murdered, she moved to Cliffside Bay with her infant daughter for a new beginning and to be close to her best friend Autumn. A year had passed but she hadn’t been able to move on and she had so much pent up anger inside of her. Her friend forced her to attend the church’s support group. Just like Sara’s situation, David Perry after the tragic loss of his wife he took his two young children and moved to this small town as well. He worked as an architect at the Wolf enterprises and could barely support his family. He also was forced to attend the same group. Even though both of them had met before, the time they spent there helped them get to know each other better and realize how much they had in common. That was the perfect motive for Sara to make the crazy offer to him about the marriage so she could inherit her grandfather’s fortune. A beneficial wedding was the beginning of a new adventure for both of them. Of course in Cliffside Bay, no one could resist falling crazy in love, so they were the last «victims». A merged happy family of five or maybe more…
“I guess we’ve been thrown together more than once to save each other.”
Departed is such a sweet story with so much hidden pain yet so much happiness as well. It’s a quite easy read, everything falls into place so effortlessly and doesn’t contain any drama. It’s perfect for all the romantics since it doesn’t have any adult scenes. What I love about this series is that each book has a different strong plot that you don’t even pay attention to the small similarities until they are mentioned in the story. I don’t have much to say about the technical part of the book: if you have read the previous books you know how well written are all of them and how much attention Tess gives to the details. In conclusion, I think it’s a perfect romantic novel and I will rate it with 5 stars.
Departed brings us full circle in the Cliffside Bay series by Tess Thompson.
Both Sara and David are widowed with young children. But, from appearances that’s all they seem to have in common. Honestly, they don’t even seem to like one another very much. But, when their friends and family push them to go to a grief support meeting, then soon discover they have more in common than they ever could have realized.
When a large inheritance comes into jeopardy, Sara needs a husband and she needs one now. And, with David’s money problems from the debt his wife racked up before she died, it seems like a match made in heaven. They’ll marry for a year and support one another allowing Sara to gain her inheritance to start a foundation to support her favorite charities and allowing David to become financially independent to raise his children. But, what happens when feelings become involved and what felt like a business deal suddenly feels like so much more?
I adored David and Sara’s story! They have both been through the wringer with their former marriages and neither feels they will ever trust again. And, they harbor anger deep in their hearts. But, coming together through their “fake” marriage really allows them to get closer than they ever expected and in ways that make them both understand just how much they missed out on the first time around. And, having two caring parents for their children is something that warms their hearts. I really loved watching this blended family come together in a beautiful and authentic way even if it wasn’t their expected outcome.
As Departed is supposed to be the final book in the series (even though Tess has teased she may spin off . . . yeah!) every couple has a highlight and update and it was fabulous. We get to catch up with all of the Dogs, Wolves and their significant others and children in an extremely heartwarming way. And, David and Sara’s story was unique and special and wrapped up this series wonderfully. 5 stars!
This book was probably the most heart breaking book in the series. Make sure you have tissues handy. If you have read the rest of the series, you already know the main parts of David and Sara's background, in this book you learn even more about them. I fell in love with David. Even with everything he went through with his ex-wife, he is still a wonderful and caring man. Sara was a little harder for me to like, even though I do understand that years of mental abuse can take a long time to heal. Sara has to get married within a month or lose a large inheritance from her grandfather. She doesn't need the money, but she wants it so she can do good with it, not spend it on herself. She truly is altruistic and wants to help everyone. The only one she knows that is single is David, and she knows he could use some money. Deep down, I don't think either one of them truly believed it was a marriage of convenience, they just used the inheritance as a way to get to know each other. David is concerned that his children will grow attached and end up hurt all over again, but he ultimately agrees to the marriage. He doesn't believe he deserves her, but realizes that it is only temporary. From the beginning, they are acting like a family and when their plans to sleep in separate bedrooms goes awry, things heat up. I liked how he was never dishonest with her about his feelings. He always let her know that it wasn't just about the money, but he actually liked her. When an emergency happens and Sara overreacts, everything comes crashing down. Will she realize she does love him before it is too late? Will he be able to forgive her for the things she said and did? Will his kids, who are older, be able to adjust to a new mom? Will his daughter ever speak again? I loved every minute of this book and if she decides to continue with the series, I hope her nanny and the investigator get their story. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
I'm honestly blown away by this amazing love story!
David and Sara bond over similar tragedies in their pasts, despite their understandable reticence about starting a new relationship. I loved how quickly they were thrown together and how real it still felt because of their connection, the feeling that they were the only ones who could truly understand their unusual circumstances.
I was impressed with the ease with which the author connected these characters and events to those in her other series. It makes it easier to move between series and books when there is such a seamless flow between them all.
I appreciated the honest portrayal of emotions; these characters aren't always happy and even-tempered. It's refreshing to see an author allow her characters to vent their anger and frustration when necessary, and yet stay true to their innate goodness and sense of self.
I love how the characters are shown to be passionate and sensuous while still keeping it clean enough for teenagers to read. The scene in front of the mirror was beautifully done, and spoke volumes about the virtues and dignity of the characters.
David and Sara's HEA was simple yet profound, tackling all the big issues of blending a family while still appreciating all the magic that love brings to our lives. I loved that we got to see a few new romances blossoming with secondary characters who also deserve their HEAs.
If the reopening scene in the bar doesn't bring on a tear or two, the wrap-up scene in the epilogue certainly will. It was the kind of life-affirming celebration that lets us have one final bonding moment with our favorite characters before reluctantly leaving them on our To-Be-Reread shelves.
This is a beautiful story from start to finish, and I heartily recommend it for all romance readers. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
BOOK REVIEW: Departed: David and Sara (Book 10) Cliffside Bay Series by Tess Thompson
Cliffside Bay~ an extraordinary town bustling with love that hangs in the air, unique friendships and yes, tragedy. But through it all, these lovable characters will capture your heart with their support and love for one another with whatever comes their way... The truest of bonds that stand the test of time...
In this final installment of the Cliffside Bay series, we meet new characters, David and Sara, both intriguing and ones who will have you cheering for and shedding tears for, as they are lead on a journey of discovery~ but only in their willingness to let go of their tragic life-experiences, and by allowing forgiveness, can they move on.
But for one, an added level of anxiety comes in the form of an inheritance with a twist... Sara Ness, a widow and young mother, must make a life-altering decision as to whether she will follow this unexpected and peculiar demand that has been thrust upon her, or risk losing it~ an inheritance that could do so much, for so many.
Author, Tess Thompson has given the reader a gift by taking the heartbroken, the lonely, the grief-stricken, and weaving them all into yet another beautiful chapter of sheer magic that can only exist in Cliffside Bay...
The woman of Cliffside Bay and the men who love them, will pull you into a world of utter enjoyment as they wrap your heart with their hope, courage and strength.
I thank the author for my advanced copy of Departed, one I highly recommend and urge the reader to consider the experience of reading the entire series. One I pray will not be leaving us just yet...
The book was bittersweet. The love story between David and Lisa will melt your heart. David is a single dad to two young children, Lisa is a single mom to one young toddler. They don’t really like each other but Lisa learns of an inheritance from her estranged grandfather that comes with one caveat, a rather big one. She has to be married within a year to receive a large amount of money that would change many lives for the better. The obvious solution to her problem is to get David to agree to a fake marriage for a year and make it look believable for the investigator who will be watching. In return, he will get part of the money to pay off debts left by his wife who was recently murdered in connection with drug trafficking Can they make it look as though they love, instead of disdain each other for a full year? They will need to be good actors to convince the town and investigator that they are blissfully married. This book, like all of the others in the series, could be read as a stand-alone, but I highly recommend reading the other books in the series first. Departed wraps up the Cliffside Bay series. Readers will have to say goodbye to all of the characters they have grown to love through all of the other books. In addition to the love story between David and Lisa, you get a small glance into each of the other books in the series, and all of the main players kind of get a curtain call at the end of the book. Readers like myself will be asking Tess Thompson to do an encore. We are not ready to leave Cliffside Bay yet! *I am in an early reading group for this author and received an advanced copy of the book. I was not asked to give a positive review. All of the thoughts are mine, and not from the author or publisher.
Sometimes love is right in front of you. All you have to do is let it in. Departed by Tess Thompson shows us just that. Everyone deserves love, even if they don’t think they do or if they can’t see the need for it in their life. Sara Ness has had a rough few years and found Peace in Cliffside Bay. She mostly keeps to herself because she is not sure if people like her for her or for her money. Her few friends are very precious to her. Her house built on the bluff in Cliffside Bay is the perfect place to raise her sweet baby girl. From the very first pages we find Sara in quite the predicament and wonder just what she will do. David has also had a rough couple years. He works his butt off and comes home to his two children who he worries about everyday. Thankfully he has his Dad and his sister to help him. He has a big decision to make and he just hopes he makes the right choice for himself and his kids. There are lots of ups and downs in this book and we cheer David and Sara on the whole way. They both deserve happiness and someone to love. Will they get everything they want and more? You definitely want to read this book to find out. Plus we get to see more of our Cliffside Bay favorite people and learn a bit more about them. Tess writes these books in such a way they we as the reader feel like we know this place and these people and we can’t wait to find out what happens next. I recommend this book and this series to anyone who likes small town romances. This book has only been out a short time and I have already read it twice
Just beautiful. The last in the Cliffside Bay series (for now at least) and it doesn't disappoint. All the well-loved characters from the previous nine books make their appearance at sometime or other in this book. It's a story about second-chances; blending a family; moving on; forgiving and of course love. Both David and Sara have been floating around in the background for four books and now its their turn. They've both had rotten luck in marriage and with dead (murdered) spouses they find they have a lot in common. Add a spiteful grandfather, a billion dollars, a dog and Moxie and things get turned upside down and get a bit heated at times. A great read that has you reaching for the tissues a few times. As it's book ten in a series, I would not recommend reading it as a standalone novel - although the author briefly touches on past characters, you don't get the full impact of their back stories unless you've read their actual stories. Just one tiny aspect bothered me about the story - where were the grandparents from the dead spouses side? Did they break contact with their grandchildren because of the the murders? All in all a lovely read, I look forward to the next five planned Cliffside Bay stories with the five young ladies (& Pink Floyd?) - in my mind I can see the Victorian becoming central to it - like a kind of "Melrose Place" vibe but with more sane inhabitants; although Mama Soto and Ria plus their men may have to move.................
I received a free ARC copy of this book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have absolutely LOVED this series and am so sorry to see it end. There are lots of new characters introduced in this story but they will be part of the authors new series. So we still get to see these characters in her new series.
That said we get to catch up with all the older characters in this series and see what their future holds. I loved that part of the book. This is a essentially an enemies to lovers and fake marriage with kids on both sides romance. And it was awesome.
Sara is a heart broken woman as is David. They both have dead spouses who betrayed them in the worst ways and they are both so angry. Enter Ria, who starts a bereavement group and thats where they start talking.
David and Sara have known each other a while. Sara is Autumn's wealthy best friend with an infant who built a gorgeous mansion iin town. David, is the twin brother of Lisa whose wife was a drug dealer and who was murdered and left him with two young children. He is an architect and he designed Sara's house. They both don't liike each other because they have mistaken ideas about the other.
As they meet in the group they form a very slow friendship from mutual understanding. I loved how we get to see them start to open up to the other. This was a wonderful end to this story and I am so happy that David and Sara found a happily ever after after their painful past.
Sweet. Awesome. Series. This little town, Cliffside Bay, has been such a joy to visit. Ms. Thompson found the perfect little town nestled on the cliff overlooking the Pacific - and placed character after character in its surrounding community, and in her pages. If you're following the series, we've met David and Sara before - living their separate lives, finding solace and peace in Cliffside Bay. If you've not read the other Cliffside Bay books - you really should before visiting this "final" book of the series. David, the single father of two, is the town architect. Sara, a single mother of one little girl, moved to Cliffside after her husband betrayed her. David was instrumental in designing the home Sara and her baby girl will occupy and start their new life.
Tess Thompson has a wonderful talent of creating characters, establishing the surrounding scenes and building a story. She does not disappoint in this "final" book of the series. This reader is hoping she's not leaving Cliffside Bay behind. There are so many characters roaming the streets we've not met. And this reader is hoping her pen itches to write their stories. Love this journey.
I am a huge Tess Thompson fan and I loved this Book, the 10th in a series set in the magical town of Cliffside Bay. Although each book is a standalone, this is really the first one I’m going to suggest you don’t read unless you’ve read most of the previous books - because all 10 of the couples featured have at least a bit part in this final chapter of all these people we’ve come to love. I think you’d probably still enjoy the book, you’ll just get so much more out of it if you know all the previous players! Departed is David & Sara’s story, two damaged people who have watched all their friends fall in love but never assumed it would be in the cards for them. A new community grief support group helps them to deal with their anger at their ex’s and also to come to the realization that maybe they have a lot in common & can help each other out. Can a marriage of convenience turn into a love match? I think we all know the answer to that, but in Tess’s hands the story becomes a magical one that will have you shedding a few tears. I’m sad for this series to end, but happy I was along for the ride!
David and Sara learn grieving is a process and sometimes, good can come out of it. David and Sara are two lost souls just trying to make it through each day. Never in their wildest dreams, did they think they would meet their soulmate, when they agree to attend a grief support group.
I liked David and Sara from the moment they are introduced in the story. They are both good people who unfortunately, married the wrong person. A person who took advantage of their kind heart. After their spouses die, they are left with the best part of their marriages: their children. It isn’t easy struggling with anger, grief, a job and taking care of their children, too. It isn’t easy, but they are trying to keep everything together.
This is an emotional and touching story with fragile characters carrying a lot of baggage. David and Sara help each other through their grief and anger and are able to reach the other other side and find happiness and contentment with each other. This beautifully written story had me laughing and crying and never wanting it to end.
Thanks to the author for providing a copy of this book via Bend and Snap. The opinions expressed are my own.
I have managed to work my way through pretty much the whole of the Cliffside Bay series this year, and I was eager to read this last instalment, but at the same time, not so, as it meant that a cast of characters that have become friends, would be wrapping up the story in this book. I don't know about anyone else, but with the current COVID-19 climate, I seem to have got a bit addicted to reading books that have endings that aren't as perfect as I'd usually like, and when I started Tess's book, I knew there would be ups and downs, then a wonderful, perfect Happily Ever After... and I wasn't entirely sure I was ready for so much positivity. But, reading the story of how Sara and David finally fall for each other, I proved myself wrong. How a will, and a desire to do something good for the world, can make an 'arrangement' end up in True Love, was the perfect antidote for the depression that has hit my reading mind. And I have to admit to a few happy tears at the end, as the story wraps up. Thank you, Tess, for these wonderful characters, and I do so hope that something may just get resurrected in the future ;)
Tess Thompson is the Queen of small town romance, and with Departed, she retains her title. Departed is the 10th book in the Cliffside Bay series. This series is the best romance series I’ve ever read. The books aren’t too smutty, which I really appreciate. However, that’s not saying that they are tame by any means.
Tess Thompson’s characters are one my favorite things about her books. They are so well written that they really come to life in the story. It was so easy to picture David, Sara, Laine, Oliver, Harper, and all of the other fantastic characters. I also really love how the characters carry over from book to book. The main characters from the very first book in the series (along with all of the other books) appear in this book, and it is so great to be able to keep up with everyone.
I really enjoyed the storyline of this book. Both David and Sara have particularly tragic and horrible histories, and though there was definitely a rollercoaster of emotions, it was a huge relief to see them both find happiness.
If you enjoy small town romance, definitely check out this series! I can’t wait to read the next book!
Tess Thompson's 2nd-chance romances bring us well-developed characters that want as our friends. They suffer from insecurity, negative self-images and painful histories that put obstacles in the way of trust. David and Sara are no exception: both were blindsided by cheating spouses (one sexually and one financially) who were murdered, leaving them each with babies to raise alone.
This book is explores the theme of living with grief. In this classic tale of "frienemies," David and Sara each grudgingly joins a survivors therapy group where they find mutual understanding of the anger and betrayal kindled by their spouse's deaths. As they start to let go of their anger, new emotions begin to stir.
The final chapter in Tess Thompson brings her Cliffside Bay saga, like the earlier books, stirs emotions. Keeping with the charm of small town living, she weaves in characters and storylines introduced in past books but you don't need to have read them to enjoy this book.
Like her other readers, we hope her hints of new characters will bring us back to Cliffside Bay down the road. Thanks again Tess for sending me an advance copy to read and review, all opinions are my own.
This was Tess Thompson's final book in her "Cliffside Bay" series. She did an amazing job with the last couple, and finding a way to wrap the whole series up with previous characters reappearing. I am happy to know that the author is hoping to add a second part to the series, because reading any book in the entire "Cliffside Bay" series is like spending time with friends. Ms. Thompson creates realistic, funny, flawed characters to whom I can always relate. Sara and David's love story is based on sharing common, tragic life experiences, yet finding a way through them to focus on the positive in life. I appreciate the romance in Ms. Thompson's novels: romance that is not over-the-top, not overly sexual, and based in faith in others and in God (again, not over-the-top, yet present.) I find her writing and character-building similar to Nora Roberts'. Her novels are a nice break from the challenging world we are currently experiencing. Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read an ARC. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Grab the tissues and enjoy David and Sara's story. Departed brought tears to my eyes several times over. One reason for it was David and Sara. They have such an emotional story that will suck you in. Both widowers and single parents. Both holding onto everything that happened to their spouses. I love the banter between David and Sara. They will win your heart even as they enter into a fake relationship. The second reason I had tears was because of all my favorite Cliffside Bay men and women. This is such a fitting tribute to a beloved father figure that will give you heart squeezes. This is such an amazing emotional read that you will not be able to put down. David and Sara are everything and merging their families will put a smile on your face and bring on the misty moments. My heart is so full after reading this one. I know I'm not ready to say goodbye to Cliffside Bay. But I have a feeling we will see them again in other ways. Tess Thompson has brought such a beautiful series to life with Cliffside Bay. This is a must one click and read over and over again.
