I cannot believe how this book has turned out. From flying in a starship to a new planet to colonize, we’re back on Earth, fighting zombies! Well, they’re not really “zombie” in that these things aren’t dead, yet. They’re infected with a virus that was purposely injected into humans to hopefully turn them into Chimeras or warfighters for the Kyra.
The Kyra were initially described as bird like with claws and cranial stems of some sort. I guess they now have evolved to looking something like humans because on of them was birthed by a human woman aboard the ill-fated colony ship, The Forerunner, many, many years ago. Through cry-sleep, Captain Clayton Cross had survived that failed mission only to find that Earth had been attacked and conquered by the Kyra.
He had survived and flourished as much as possible now as a human slave for the Kyra. They kept humans around to do their breeding since the Kyra were incapable of self-replicating and needed the humans to breed their warriors. The Kyra were also at war with the Chrona, a race of artificial life that were created by the Kyra. They had rebelled and now were at war with the Kyra. A Chrona fleet was rumored to be enroute to Earth to dislodge the Kyra and supposedly free humanity.
But, back to Captain Cross. He’s now a garbage truck driver taking waste materials from the walled city out to the wastelands. The wastelands are what’s left after the Kyra bombed most all of Earth and forced its remaining humans to live in walled-off cities for protection against the Dregs. The Dregs were those humans who became purposely infected, but for some reason didn’t change into a Chimera. Instead, they became insane, raving lunatics, almost like animals and eating anything and everything in sight. Of course, these things were abandon in the waste to die or not, but because of their presence, the waste was a very dangerous place.
While Captain Cross was just known as Clayton, was caught in the waste by a horde of Dregs only to be saved by the Resistance. These were a few humans who had decided to live in the wastelands and fight against the Kyra at every opportunity. Anyway, this is getting to be a long story.
In this book, you’ll find what kind of success the Resistance had against the Kyra and what’s to become of Earth. Will the Chrona arrive and become the new masters or will they actually be worse than the Kyra. Are all the Kyra enemies of humans or is there a possibility of making peace between the two. And finally, will Earth ever get back to be a place where anyone would want live?
There is another book in this series coming out in September of 2020.
After destroying most of the Kyra-rebuilt cities, the departing Chrona forces convinced the Phoenix Resistance fighters that they had developed a vaccine that worked through the water supply to prevent the Kyra from turning human children into zombie-like creatures called Dregs. However, they were double-crossed: the product was actually a quicker-acting virus to turn humans and Kyra into Dregs. Most of the water supply was thus contaminated and turned many thousands of humans, alien/human hybrids and remaining Kyra into Dregs.
This book follows Captain Cross and the small Phoenix team in their search to find a ship they could use to leave the Earth. The story is well-written and provides a lot of action and interesting team dynamics as they face outlaw gangs, Kyra groups, lots of Dregs, and an invitation to join a “friendly” group. The reader is kept guessing about who to believe and wondering how the group will ever survive as plans fail and surprises overwhelm them. I found it hard to put down and lost some sleep along the way. This is a great series and I’m eager to read the next book.
I've read stronger apocalypse books but that doesn't mean that this one (or this series) isn't good. Yes, it drags in places, but I think I just have a prejudice about lengthy battle scenes. Battle scenes are important in a story like this. I just grow impatient.
I didn't like the character of Commander Tyira (sp?). Not because he was the bad being but because the character was so two dimensional. Maybe he was a psychopath but he was a cardboard psychopath. I'm not saying we need to know his motivation (although we do learn that). Psychos are not stupid or shallow and we needed to see more depth if he was going to be a critical part of the story.
The grammarian in me was happy. There were no major faux pas. The story followed a logical enough path and did not (possible spoiler alert) have a happy ending for all the major characters. I do think Clayton Cross should have rescued that poor cat though.
I think I liked book 1 a bit better than this one, but not by much. Clayton Cross, his wife & daughters are trying to escape Earth before the Kyra fleet barricades Earth, but many obstacles lay in their way. The least of which is horde of newly turned dregs. (people turned zombie like by a virus unleashed by a supposed ally) Can they turn the tide and put humans back on top? Or at least survive? Questions are answered and also left open ended for the final book. #4. But at least you aren't left totally hanging. It's a good solid ending that left the door open for the next book.
I received this book for free after a review of the prior one.
I thought this was a great follow up to Ascension Wars book two. It need to come together with a solid conclusion and the plot all came together well at the end. Personally, I’m not sure where the final book will go unless it has dishonest political issues where 2 races come together and fight for their own agenda. There is still the mysterious virus that should have killed the child but didn’t. I think you could have ended the story with an explanation and been done with it. I felt the ending was good although it felt short and rushed. I’m glad Rosie made it and yeah Clayton should have saved the cat! Well done!

I HAVE NOT READ THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN THIS SERIES, BUT I AM HOOKED! HONESTLY, I HAD TROUBLE PUTTING THE BOOK DOWN IN THE EVENING, SO THANK YOU FOR THE LOSS OF SLEEP. I WILL BE READING THE FIRST TWO BOOKS AS SOON AS I CAN, BUT I LOVE THE WAY YOU MOVED FROM ONE SITE TO ANOTHER AND HOW YOUR CHARACTERS STRUGGLED WITH THEIR VIEWS OF WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND THEM. HOW THE SURVIVORS WILL CONTINUE IN THE ENCLAVE WILL BE INTERESTING IN THE NEXT BOOK. WAR IS HELL SO I HOPE THERE IS A BIT OF DOWN TIME FOR EVERYONE. HARD ON THE READER TO CONSTANTLY BE IN SUCH AN ADRENALINE RUSH FOR SO LONG - BUT SO WORTH IT.
I really liked the first book in the series. The second book was okay but I sensed the direction it was taking and hoped it wouldn't actually end up there. It did. It felt like I was reading the Walking Dead future edition. Not really my cup of tea. I held out optimism that they would get off planet by the half-way point of the book. I can say that at least I don't have a clue where the story is going from here and I will read the next book.
The Chrona have betrayed the resistance and released a new virus that will turn everyone into a dreg. Also the Kyra are coming with a fleet to either blockade or eliminate earth. Will Clayton and his friends find the means to escape before that. What follows is a fast paced and thrilling adventure with new enemies and situations to deal with. Definitely recommend this book and the whole series
Ascension wars is hard to put down. Can’t wait for the final volume. Reading of the survivors’ hard fight to survive but also to live. The main family torn apart, separated, almost reunited, unsure of the youngest’s fate kept me on the edge of my seat. Can’t wait for Vol 4.
The tension, drama and high-intensity conflicts never let up in the I-must-turn-the-page alien thriller! I highly recommend it but you should definitely read the series in the order written. Thank hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
Book #3 and the plot thickened! New and old characters were well thought out. The pace of the storyline was full of reunions, battles and old prejudices. At the end, there were still unanswered questions. All a great lead into the next book! Thanks for the entertaining read!
Great third installment. The story moves quickly along with a nice action packed ending and a cliffhanger that will leave you guessing. The story has come along way from where it first started. I was not quite sure where it was going, but it has not disappointed.
I really enjoyed the first book of the serie but second and third are not scifi to me . just the story of 2 families heavily armed ,you replace the dregs by zombies ,so what's new? excuse my french ,je suis tres decue !
A lot of tension, never ending surprises, keeps your interest engaged wanting to know how the protagonists will manage to get out of the continuos problems they encounter. You think they made it and another worse comes.
The battle continues with the Resistance meeting multiple enemies, both Kyra and human associated. Hatred abounds in both groups as well as signs of friendships and respect. The common human origin may be a determining factor in a resolution of these problems.
This was the third book in the series. I really enjoyed it. It had plenty of action through the entire book. Getting ready to read the fourth and final book.
Dealing with aliens, being headstrong is a benefit. Full of drama, intrigue and action plus philosophy: readers from multiple genres will enjoy this series.
