Bitsie's Bakeshop Mystery #1

Raspberry Ripple Murder

Rate this book
Bitsie George has always dreamed of owning her own bakery.
When she finds herself suddenly single after 27 years of marriage, Bitsie jumps at the chance of fulfilling her dream. The only drawback to her new life as a baker is the dead electrician in her kitchen.

Was the electrician the victim of a tragic on-the-job accident, or is there something much more sinister afoot? It’s up to Bitsie to find out with a little help from her sister-in-law, her recently-retired-from-the-police-force brother, and her too-handsome-to-be-real shop assistant.

It’s not easy finding a murderer when your most compelling clue is a half-eaten raspberry ripple cupcake, but perhaps a pleasantly-plump cupcake connoisseur is the perfect woman for the job.

A great mystery. With 100 pages a bit on the shorter side but packed with great clues and progressing at a great pace. The ending was a bit far fetched but getting there was a lot of fun. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series and hope there will be a bit more character development.

2.5: This has all the cosy mystery elements you'd expect: quaint setting, amateur sleuth, small town vibes, low stakes suspense, cute premise. But it doesn't really deliver.

The execution is pretty uneven. The pacing drags at times and the story leans heavily on dialogue and exposition. So. Much. Talking. Just endless stretches of back-and-forth conversations. Characters are constantly explaining things instead of letting events unfold naturally, draining most of the tension. It's 90% talking (not an exaggeration).

The mystery has a few clever touches, but the killer was obvious. So obvious that I was convinced it had to be a red herring. And then it's all resolved in dialogue - "Yeah, so turns out XX was the killer all along." "Wow, really? Why?" "Let me tell you in 12 paragraphs of excruciating detail."

If there'd been a little more show and a little less tell, this would have been a decent lazy day read. I was also hoping for a recipe or two at the end 😭🧁

Widow scorned

A quick read with a good mystery and great characters. There are several mistakes that could have been picked up by a proofreader.

Raspberry Ripple Murder was a very short book to devour. In it, you will meet Bitsie George. She's about 50 years old and recently joined the dating market. Sort of. It doesn't help that the love of her life decided to have a mid-life crisis and leave her for a 25-year-old. So, since she's still trying to process that and wait for the divorce to be finalized. Well, she starts her new business - a bakery.

The only thing she didn't expect was a murder to happen overnight. Seriously, she was owner for barely a day and now she has to deal with a murder investigation. Mostly because the police force was completely terrible. It really made zero sense to me that they didn't even talk to her.

I mean, it was her bakery and the murder happened overnight. Yet, the only person who talked to her about the investigation was her brother. Now Stan, her brother, was supposed to be retired so it really seemed fishy to me.

Besides that, the clues and little twists definitely made this book enjoyable. With lots of suspects on my mind, I wanted to know who was actually behind it all. So, when the big reveal gave me more than one suspect? Well, it was a nice surprise. Especially when we technically get a third, but they were just trying to help us along the way.

In the end, this was cute and easy to follow along with. I might dive into the sequel if it's available on KU.

Okay, this was pretty meh, but in terms of cozy mysteries under 100 pages, it's actually one of the better ones I've read.

I will admit that I totally chose this book by its cover. This book is easily my favorite cupcake cover. But that's just an aside, although I am happy to see that the titular Raspberry Ripple cupcake does make a big appearance throughout the story.

In terms of story elements, the characters were actually fairly interesting. Despite the shortness of the book, I felt like we were given enough backstory to appreciate the characters, while also not making the whole thing a backstory. This didn't feel like a prequel the way some novellas do, but more like a full cozy mystery. I actually really liked this, that it brings us in the same way full-length cozies do.

Despite this, it didn't resonate with me. There's not much going on with the characters that makes me want to read more. The end of the book symbolizes acceptance of a lot of things in Bitsie's life, and I think all those things were explained well enough here that I don't need to go forward with it.

In general, this was interesting enough, just not the most engaging in the genre.

Don’t trust the ex

Bitsie’s cupcake shop is getting off to a good start when an electrician is found dead in her bakery.

Now they need to find out what happened to him and who would want him dead. They have several people of interest, his ex Jennifer, a man he fired and a homeless man sleeping outside the bakery.

A nice cozy mystery to curl up in the recliner with a cup of tea and work out the answer,

Cute cozy story built around a dead electrician and a raspberry ripple cupcake. Bitsie has always wanted to be a baker and now that she's single, she decides to give it a shot. This is a quick read, only 79 pages and introduces the reader to an up and coming baker who has some delicious offerings for her community. The problem...the electrician they hired ends up dead and there's a partial cupcake left as a clue.

2 "I craved cupcakes the entire frikkin' time!" stars

I'm still kinda new to the whole cozy mystery genre.
But the ones I've read makes me think I'll stick with the genre a little longer.

Raspberry Ripple Murder will certainly NOT be the reason for continuing...

It wasn't bad, just wasn't good either.

I had absolutely NO connection with the MC, Bitsie. (And it's not due to her ridiculous name...)

After 27 years of marriage, Bitsie George finds herself a single woman at 50. When the opportunity to own her own bakery comes her way, she’s more than a little excited and thrilled with her new venture. Unfortunately, things turn nasty when her electrician is found dead in her kitchen.

Bitsie is determined to find out what happened to the electrician. Was it an accident or murder? She has a big supporting cast to help her from her retired cop brother, her sister-in-law and her handsome bakery assistant. With a little help from all of them, Bitsie sorts through the evidence and tries to come up with some answers.

This is the first book in the series and I found it to be a cute, sweet cozy mystery. It’s a short book, but it’s filled with quite a bit of mystery and drama. There were several suspects and many twists and turns. An enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Kindle freebie at the time of download. The giveaway does not affect my review in any way and all opinions expressed are all my own.

Bitsie George is 50 and suddenly single since her lying soon-to-be ex-husband decided to trade her in for a younger model. Buying a bakery from her sister-in-law Liz is a dream come true-except for the early mornings but thank goodness for the young bakers who are willing to do that. Now Bitsie has taken over, the electricians can come in and do some much-needed electrical work overnight when the bakery is empty. When one of the electricians turns up dead on the job, the police suspect it was an accident plain and simple. Some believe it was suicide because Marco was terminally ill but Bitsie isn't buying any of those theories. The clues add up to murder plain and simple and she's going to figure it out herself if she has to.

This is a novella length cozy mystery aimed at those who like the usual bland Kindle Unlimited fare. The writing is mediocre and the plot is insanely predictable. I didn't quite add up all the clues to the complex reveal and I was really into it when my mom knocked on my door late at night and I jumped when she called my name. LOL! That's about the extent of my interest in this book. There wasn't even a recipe to make up for it! There are a few typos and one repetitive passage. Bitsie already knew Jennifer had two dead husbands and then it's repeated again later and she didn't seem to know that.

Bitsie is a bland heroine. She's 50, insecure and doesn't seem to know the first thing about how the bakery operates. At least she's smarter than the police because the clues are soooo obvious and no one with half a brain would miss those clues, not even Bitsie's semi-retired police officer brother, Stan. He is apparently the only one who can even come close to solving a homicide and he needs his little sister to point out the obvious and solve the murder for him. Stan is a good guy, he just can't snoop the way Bitsie does and boy does she do some snooping. The things she uncovers are so bizarre and insane! I don't believe anyone could be THAT stupid.

Nick, the shop manager, seems a little sleazy to me. He seems into Bitsie even though he's a good 10 years or more younger and he's there late the night of the murder. Mops, rags and towels are missing, cupcakes are half eaten and he doesn't know anything? Hmm. Sadly, he's not on anyone's radar. Hector, one of the young bakers, was also there the night of the murder. He and Anabel arrived shortly after the electrician, Marco was killed. Hector sort of knew Marco, through a friend of a friend situation and is really broken up about the death of a friend of a friend. He seems like a nice young man and I feel bad for him. Anabel is a sweet girl and is less disturbed because she didn't know the victim. Her memory for detail isn't very good though. Another regular character is Bill, the homeless Iraq veteran who sleeps in the alley outside the bakery (an alley that has a back door and no lights at the entrance!). Did he see the murder? Bill seems to have disappeared. Where could he be? Is he safe and hiding or did the murderer get him too?

Marco, the electrician, was a good guy. He was a loving father, decent ex-husband and caring boyfriend. He struggled sometimes with being too honest and trusting. He did seem to have a bit of a cranky side though. Who hates raspberry and then rants about it? Who hates raspberry to begin with? I was very sorry for his death though. I hate it when good people are killed. The victim should be someone else. There are plenty of nasty people in this book.

The suspects are obvious. Jennifer, Marco's girlfriend? ex-girlfriend? has been widowed twice before. Um HELLO black widow anyone? She's a piece of work and totally nasty from her fashion sense to her attitude. It can't be her because that would be too obvious but there's only one other suspect and he's obvious too. Monty Burge, an electrician and ex-con who has a beef with Marco is the most obvious choice for murderer besides Jennifer. He has a nasty temper, has been in jail and has a (lame) beef with Marco and was overheard threating Marco. There's only one other slightly possible candidate for murderer and if that person isn't an actual killer, they're an accessory.

I won't be reading any more of this series.

Sparks fly in the bakery

Terrific. Buying the shop to make her dream come true is just the ticket to getting over her upcoming divorce. However when the body of the electrician is discovered it does dampen her joy. Was it an accident? Too many things make her question this. Together with her brother-in-law, she starts looking into the inconsistencies. Added to that there is the younger baker who is causing her heart to pound. The characters are great - vivid and real. Whilst the plot is full of twists and turns. A great read.

Wow, this short book packed some good punches and even two bodies into the story line. It seemed more of a matter than finding whodunit (I think readers will figure it out pretty quickly), but how the person did it along with all the sneaky things they did. And there was the question of what could a homeless guy, his dog and a bitten-into cupcake have to do with the murder?

I liked that Bitsie went about her questioning in a fairly methodical way, hopefully some of that rubbed off from having a brother who was a semi-retired police officer. I was proud of her for pulling him in whenever she thought she needed some backup too. She also had a couple of other sleuthing buddies in the form of Raina and Nick, so I'm definitely interested in these characters enough to continue the series.

Cute novella I received from a Book Funnel promotion. Who can resist yummy cupcakes and cute cats? I like mysteries which feature a woman beginning a new single life, and this is one of them. Unlike many e-books, this one didn't have many printing errors in it, which is always a plus in my book. I personally think that this book is better written than Joanne Fluke's mysteries. If you're looking for recipes, you could stick with Joanne Fluke's series. Personally, I skip over any book's recipes. I'm just interested in the storyline. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, as I hadn't read any by this author prior to this one. I definitely recommend this book.

Bitsie is starting over: leaving her cheating ex-husband, she is rebuilding her life, beginning with owning a bakery. When an electrician dies while working in her shop, she knows that the misadventure is actually a murder and sets out to prove it.

This novella was rather sweet (pun semi-intended). Normally, I prefer a longer book, but this one was perfect as-is! I appreciated the fact that the author(s) did not pad the story to reach novel length. The characters were well described as were the details of the plot.

Raspberry Ripple Murder is a lovely introduction to a new series. Recommended for those times when you'd like a good story, but don't have much time.

Cute and simple!

It was a cute and simple story following a newly divorced woman who owns a bakery shop. An accident takes place but as the pieces unfold, we learn that it indeed was not an accident. The story follows the main character uncovering the truth about the incident in her bakery shop and discovering her own truth on healing through her divorce and painful betrayal from her (ex) husband of 27 years. The ending was a beautiful symbol of how life continues and continues to blossom.

DNF – The Raspberry Ripple Murder

I had to put The Raspberry Ripple Murder down. While the premise was intriguing, the book felt too all over the place, with a lot of jumping around that made it hard to stay focused. The pacing was fast, with a murder early on, but the characters felt flat, and I found myself skimming paragraphs. Unfortunately, it didn’t hold my attention, and I couldn’t connect with the story.

So many WHY questions

Why Bitsie’s bakery, why electrocution, why is Bill missing, why, why, why? Then there is The Who. Who did it, who is the sister, who is the doctor, who took the mop, who took the towels, who took bites out of the cupcakes? To learn the answers, read the book full of answers and questions. Loved to story.

a fast fun cozy mystery

In this first book in the series Bitsie has moved back to her hometown after a divorce. She buys a bakery from her sister in law and begins a new life. When a worker dies in the bakery she dives in to try and find out if it was an accident or foul play. It was a fun read.

I’ll pass

Meh. However, it’s short, so not what I consider a book, more of a short story. Ye idea has potential, but isn’t fleshed out. The characters are two dimensional and are often confused in the story. It feels like choppy sentences that don’t expand anything to pull it all together. Not a series I’ll follow.

Cozy mystery short story

If you like cozy murder mysteries then this entertaining story is a quick good read. Bitsie is called to her new bakery early one morning when her employees find a dead body inside. The local police rule it accidental but Bitsie sees more suspicious things and doubts their findings. I would read more of this series.

I received this as a free cozy mystery promotion. I'm enjoying books that are a quick read, and not gruesome. This fits that bill perfectly. The cupcakes the author describes sound beautiful, maybe she could put the recipes for them all at the end of her stories lol. Will look forward to more stories from this author.

A perfect series starter!

Bitsie George is a perfect novice investigator. What she lacks in skill, she makes up for in perseverance.

This is an good start to a series. The characters are likeable and there were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. I look forward to the next book.
