Loving me won’t keep you warm at night when I’m dead…

Todd –

When my dad died fighting a barn fire it taught me two very important lessons. One, I wanted to be a hero and a fireman just like him. And two, don’t let anyone get close to you, because losing you will destroy them.

It’s not easy pushing away the woman I’ve loved all my life. But I do it to protect her at all costs. I’d rather die alone than leave Sarra behind with nothing but memories.

Sarra -

I’ve loved Todd Montgomery my whole life. Everyone always assumed me included, that we’d grow up, get married, and fill the town with another pack of Montgomery kids.
Unfortunately, he had other plans.

As the youngest fire chief the state has ever had, he takes more pride in his job than in his personal life. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that we’ll only ever be friends. Best friends.

But sometimes I get a glimpse of something more from him. Just enough to keep me waiting. Just enough ‘what if’ to send me to my knees in prayer every night that he will wake up and realize that I’m the only woman who is willing to risk it all to be loved by him.

Pathetic doesn’t even cover half of what Sarra is. Dear lord, get a fucking grip. Years of suffering and it takes two sentences to forgive all the heart ache? Dear fucking heavens, I wanted to punch her in the throat so she could wake the fuck up.

°Each other's first and only
°Switching POVs
°Both are 27 y/o when they finally get together
°STUPID af hero
°PATHETIC af heroine
°No OW/OM drama
°No cheating or scenes with OP
°No condoms
°There was only one sex scene and it was super dull, I expected more since it was their first time being together, I felt like he ruined that special moment especially bc of the way he acted the next day
°They dated when they were in high school but he broke up with her when he joined the fire department at 17, he didn't want her to suffer like his mom did when his dad died
°They remained friends after he broke up with her! she was so dumb and weak, Sarra was the definition of pathetic 😠
°The stupid hero realized that he had been wrong this whole time only AFTER he almost died in a fire
°I hated that she forgave him so quickly, she should have make him grovel!
°No epilogue/HFN

Characters are unlikable, to be kind. Repetitively toxic and pathetic to be blunt, It’s pretty rare that I truly dislike a dual virgin romance…but here we are. I skimmed after the half way mark (ish) in the hopes it improved…spoiler alert it didn’t. Honestly this reminds me of an emotionally abusive relationship we’re the guy keeps cheating and being apologetic but in this case it’s his job rather than a person.

The first book was really good. I skimmed over the last few pages because everything was established already....but it was short enough that I could imagine it happening IRL. but not long enough to make me skip over more pages than I had. I would love reading the rest of the books in this series, but it's not a pressing concern.

I liked it!

I thought this book was good because it was interesting and written well. I knew there would be an HEA but you just wanna kick Todd and say come on already! Especially because Sarra was adorable!!

This book annoyed me. They didn’t even officially get together until 94%!! And there was no epilogue.
