The Hunters' Girl

Rate this book
Cooper Reyes and Lee Nevada run their own business hunting things no one else wants to hunt—ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and other dark entities. Before taking a job, they have clients sign a “hunters not responsible for damage or collateral” contract. They do a job, and they leave.
Then one night, in a hunt gone wrong, they orphan a teenage girl with a speech impediment. To Lee’s shock, Cooper won’t leave her to social services, as he doesn’t think she could survive the foster system. This would shatter their “no collateral” policy... and possibly their partnership.
They bring her to their log house in the forests of Quinault, Washington, and try to figure out how all of this is going to work. Though still damaged, she begins trying to fit into their life and home, determined to prove her worth. When it turns out she may have gifts and secrets of her own, Cooper and Lee have to face even harder decisions.
Taking in a stray is never simple.

Like most writers, I've worked at many jobs in my life, including teaching pre-school until I completed my master's degree in Composition Theory. Between 1993 and 2006, I taught college English while writing fiction on the side, some independently and some with my husband and life-long partner J.C.

Over the years, we've lived in Washington State, Idaho, Colorado, and now moved just south of Portland, Oregon. I love the Northwest, and it's a great place to write.

We have a lovely and talented daughter, Jaclyn, who lives in Houston, Texas along with our wonderful and talented son-in-law, Paul.

J.C. and I sold Dhampir in 2001, which changed our lives considerably. It was published in January 2003, and we've published a book in the Noble Dead Saga every year since. In May of 2006, we were both able to quit our teaching jobs and move into full time writing.

Recently, I've begun writing romance/suspense novels, beginning with: Alone with a Soldier. I am so glad my books have found an audience because I love to write fiction more than anything else in the world... and I'm not really good at anything else.

Possibly my new Sam and Dean? I said possibly. Can't completely replace the Winchester men.

I really loved this book. Read it on Kindle Unlimited which is a plus. I am more and more curious about Beth the "Girl" in the title. Her history and how she truly received her gifts.

Downside, gotta wait for the next book. It didn't really end on a cliffhanger but it is looking like a series. Another downside, if I didn't read Latin I would hate it when the guys went on a hunt. Just a suggestion, include the translation. Your other readers may appreciate it. If I can't translate I tend to look a word up in my dictionary so I can read it but I'm an odd ball. Others may not be like me.

Overall a really nice read with great world building and character development. Bringing the reader into each character's psyche, heart, emotions while letting each character have room to develop with the series. Looking forward to see where this goes. For now I got reruns of Sam and Dean.

The Hunter’s Girl by Barb Hendee

Dean and Sam Winchester ‘adopt’ a Very young ‘Counselor Troi’.
Called into a paranormal situation, two paranormal ‘hunter a’ are hired to destroy a vampire ‘nest’. They manage to kill all the vampires but, for the first time in their hunter lives, they are suddenly confronted with ‘collateral damage’, a young teenager, who says that one of the vampires the hunters killed was her father. They call in the law officer that hired them but take the young lady with them back to their ‘base’ States away from the job. Slowly, Beth, starts to ingratiate herself in the two hunters’ lives. Then, Beth begins to exhibit paranormal abilities.

I enjoyed Hendee’s Dhampir series years ago and looked forward to reading the start of this new series. Unfortunately, while the premise was interesting, the execution was lacking. The storyline was fairly short and simple, though that in itself wasn’t necessarily a problem. But the characters all were introduced with long expository sections that broke up the flow of the story and still didn’t flesh them out all that well. It almost was as if the book was a first draft with the author shaping the characters and story which was later to be melded and expanded into a final draft that never happened.

I’m sorry to say I found this a disappointing offering from an experienced writer.

I'm hooked

Looking forward to the sequel. I've only briefly visited the Pacific Northwest but found it to be beautiful. This book took me back there.
