Violet Parker knows better than to play with devils. They always cheat, especially when lives are at stake. Deadwood’s charming, troublemaking, and soul-sucking devils are no different, and they’re biting at her heels.
But the clock is ticking and Violet has no choice—she must risk her life to save her treasured Aunt Zoe. With any luck, she might be able to trick the devils and beat the old terrors at their own game. If not, Deadwood could end up short one Executioner.
“Executioners don't duck, they swing.” ~Violet Parker

How is it possible that I can get more deeply enthralled with each consecutive Deadwood book released!? I read each one more voraciously than its predecessor, but still I'm anxious to read the next one the instant I read "The End...for now."!!! Loved this latest addition, suspenseful, terrifying, hilarious!! Each book is a literary roller coaster ride! Highly recommend!!!
Book 11 and Violet is up to her crazy hair in devils. Rex is still blaming her for everything that’s gone wrong in his life, the Hungarian Devil is still on the loose and is now hunting Violet, Jane, in her ghostly form is helping Violet, and the gang is ready to go to battle, including Prudence. Violet continues to slowly step up in term of accepting her role as an executioner, though she’s still a brat about it at times. Harvey, continues to be a standout secondary character, Coop and Natalie are doing the mating dance, and Det Hawke is still gung-ho to arrest Violet for any and everything. The characters continue to grow (thank goodness) the ghosts, zombies, ghosts, devils and other supernatural beings continue to evolve. Good addition to the series.
This series just keeps getting better and better. As the plot thickens, more answers and more questions come to light. Can’t get enough of Violet, Doc, and the rest of the gang in Deadwood. As usual, lots of laughs, romance, and creepy ghosts!
Another excellent book about Violet and the gang! Violet will finally catch the liderc which she promised Masterson she would do to save her Aunt Zoe from his clutches. She will have help from the usual gang of Harvey, Cooper, Cornelius, Zoe, and even Prudence. Old friends will make appearances but they will triumph. The romance between Doc and Violet has gone up a notch finally! But during the course of capture the liderc other things will happen which will have to be dealt with eventually! Natalie and Cooper are finally together and Reid is still working on Zoe. Romance is in the air, great! I give this book more than five stars! I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the next in the series!
I'm telling you - Anne Charles cannot write these fast enough if you ask her fans.
One of the things I like most about Violet Parker is that she's far from perfect! She's not a size 6, she's not independently wealthy, she swears like a sailor, she's a klutz, etc, etc. Life, and death, keep throwing wrenches in her path, and she keeps batting them aside. She comes out with bruises - and some doozies at that - but she does come out of it! Often with the help of her friends (some of whom are reluctant) and family.
First line—"'What dumbass thought catching an Hungarian devil made of smoke and shadow was a good idea?'"
Oh my gosh! With an opening line like that one, you just know the rest of the book is going to be one crazy ride. And believe me it, definitely was an exciting one. I absolutely love this series and I'm forever amazed at the dramatic and creative story-lines that Ann comes up with for each book. What will she think of next?
Devil Days in Deadwoodhas maybe become one of my favorites in this whole series. I just absolutely loved everything about it. The ongoing and quirky relationships were at their peak. I can't count how many times I laughed out loud, such hilarious characters. Then the dangers that Violet's profession puts them all in was exciting, as well as being a bit scary. And in the end, everyone works together to defeat the bad guys..... for now. There are always more waiting in the wings.
I have a love/hate relationship with the endings of Ann's books. She leaves the reader in a dramatic situation but always promises that there will be more coming, we just need to be patient. But it is so hard!!
I am a huge fan of this whole series and I'm always recommending them to anyone and everyone who will listen to me. Check it out!
‘Never give the devil a ride. He’ll always want the reins.’
Author Ann Charles earned her degree in English from the University of Washington and is enjoying a very successful career as a novelist specializing in fiction – a blend of romance, mystery, things bizarre, and humor. Her work has been rewarded by not only a large audience of fans, but also with recognition in such awards as The Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence and the Romance writers of America Golden Heart Award among others. To date she has published over forty books in both novel and short story collections.
The ability to make fine mystery hilarious is a gift Ann Charles owns. Her stories are populated with strange characters whose idiosyncrasies amplify the plot line. Though this is a long story (nearly 400 pages) the writing is so fluid and bracing that reading the book becomes an addictive pleasure that many readers will find it is a fine evening’s read. This being the latest volume of her series, Ann kindly lists the bizarre characters of Deadwood, allowing first time readers to ‘catch up’ on the derring-do and populace
This is the eleventh volume of he Deadwood Humorous Mystery series and from the tone of the opening pages, Ann quickly establishes the flavor that will suffuse this story (and of course we are in the hands of real estate agent Violet Parker, the heroine of the series). “What dumba*s thought catching a Hungarian devil made of smoke and shadow was a good idea?” I scowled p at the crumbling brick Sugarloaf Building, which had been perched on a hillside looking across at the Homestake Mine in Lead [South Dakota] for a century…and then some. The sun was hiding behind a thick bank of clouds, making mid-afternoon feel more like early evening. Old Man Winter his the Black Hills with a frying pan every year, knocking it a**-over-teakettle into short days and frigid temperatures. The other old man in my life, Will “the Mongoose” Harvey, grabbed my elbow. “If memory serves me right, Sparky, that’d be you.” He tugged me toward the rickety metal steps leading up to the building’s second floor. “That was supposed to be a rhetorical question.”…
That stylish language carries along this entertaining story that the author condenses as follows: ‘Violet Parker knows better than to play with devils. If not, Deadwood could end up short one Executioner.’ C.S. Kunkle adds the visual art.
The adventure provides just that sort of diversion we all need on occasion – solid story development ushering in interesting at somewhat askew characters all related with one fine bunch of belly laughs. Read and enjoy!
OMD This series just never gets old or boring! I swear there's no counting how many times I literally lmao in this book. Hell the whole dadburn series! The best ever funny, romantic, scary series by miles! Loved it and can't wait for the next book!
If you like to laugh this book is for you. A few ghosts a few undead and a very unique bunch of characters. This is book number 11. So the storyline is involved Violet is battling her ex , ghosts and some extremely unhappy undead. She can't decide which is more unappealing her ex or the undead. Her amazing group of friends and family will keep you laughing. Guaranteed GREAT read.
Brilliant fun read with just enough chills to satisfy!
This series just keeps on getting better. The usual cast of characters that we love are assembled again as Deadwood continues to throw up monsters, ghosts and other paranormal creatures for the gang to deal with.Along the way there's the usual fun and laughter as well as the chills that Anne Charles blends together so well.A fantastic read ,can't wait for the next one!.Enjoy.
I love this series! The only thing I’m sad about is that I already finished it and now I have to wait... I love the characters, the cheesy jokes and the never-ending trouble Violet seems to find. I read EVERYTHING by Ann Charles! Her books put me in a happy place!
Funny, scary, romantic and the right mix of all the genres.
This book came out at midnight. I downloaded and thought "I'll read it tomorrow". I'd finished by 7am this morning. What I particularly liked with this eleventh book in the Deadwood series was the development of some of the secondary characters, such as Cornelius and Prudence. They became much more three dimensional in this novel, fleshed out and made real in my head. It was wonderful to see how relationships have developed and solidified over time, with friends becoming family.
Particularly good to see the humour, respect and friendship between Violet and Cooper in the moments when they're together. A good continuation of the flirtation between Nat and Cooper too (you need to read book 5 of the Jackrabbit Junction series to find out what happened in Arizona). Cooper may have bitten off more than such a straight laced law dog can chew with Nat.
The resolution to the Hungarian Devil situation was both entertaining and tense; I feel like the author got the balance exactly right in the way things went. Violet's final conclusion was exactly what that storyline needed for everything to feel right.
I love Ann Charles style of writing. She writes with a wonderful mix of humour and paranormal thrills, with the added element of romance. Her characters have become people whose lives I can't wait to catch up on and see what they're up to. I genuinely couldn't put the book down, I kept thinking "one more chapter". For me, that's a sign of a good book.
The new year revelry is over and it's time to get back to work in the Black Hills...and time is running out for Violet to take care of one pesky devil in order to keep her beloved Aunt Zoe from the clutches of another. But as the hunt begins a few new twists and turns are thrown at her and her duties as an executioner pile higher. From page one, this book just takes off and the hits just keep coming. There is enough devilry to keep your heart pumping but handed out with enough humor to tickle your funny bone with some laugh out loud moments, and enough heart to keep those strings strumming. Also, be ready for a few nail-biting and even some "AWW" inspiring moments, and let's not forget the sizzle. This book really does have it all. What a fantastic addition to an already amazing series! And Ann, I sure am glad it's only The End..for now.
This one is especially suspenseful. The last part had me at the edge of my seat. The audiobooks are great, I love the different voices from the narration. I can't wait for the next one.
Yes I love it It just gets better with every novel in the series. I am loving how violet's life is starting to come together, how her kids are growing, how everyone is just a great big family unit.
I'm guessing if you are looking at this book you have already read some of the series so you know anything written by Ann Charles is amazing. If you haven't read any of her books, please do she is amazing! This story is a long one but I love it, the longer it is the more time I get with one of my favorite groups of characters. I definitely recommend it!
Thank you for another wonderful adventure from Deadwood and surrounding areas. Always fast paced laugh out loud fun with this gang of characters. Now I just need to wait for the next installment. Drat it’s so hard to wait!
Ann Charles hits it out of the ball park again! #11 in her Deadwood series continues the saga of Violet, Doc, Cooper, Natalie, Ol’ Man Harvey (my favorite) & the rest of the gang. More fun adventure. Doc & Violet’s relationship continues to grow. Ol’ Man Harvey continues to make me laugh out loud. Now, what will I read until #12??? Hurry Ann Charles!
These books just keep getting to be more and more fun!
More fun with Violet, Doc, Natalie,Cooper, and all the other GREAT characters in this series from Deadwood. Escape from you troubles while the Deadwood posse tracks down monsters and hellions and ghosts and relieves Deadwood from their troubling presence. There's nary a dull moment and the books just keep getting better and better.
I love this series by Ann Charles and this book just adds more love for it. The story just keeps building along with Violet’s skills and knowledge as an Executioner. Her drive to protect and save her Aunt Zoe from the devil of the black hills does get her into trouble but it also shows how far Violet is willing to go for the people she loves. As always, I can’t wait for the next book.
I absolutely love any book by Ann Charles but I especially love the Deadwood Series! The characters, who you wish you could actually meet, are funny and lovable and the villains are pretty creepy! Just as they should be.
This series is so fun! Supernatural action and hilarious dialog will keep you page turning until it's over ...for now. Violet and the gang take on another bestie or two with some help from the unpredictable Prudence. Meanwhile Coop and Nat have returned from Jackrabbit to join the fun. Highly recommended!!
This book was amazing. I could hardly put it down! Violet is one super hero, along with her “Posse” of characters! They all want to help her in her fight against these creatures! You don’t want to miss reading this series!!
I loved it! It felt like it was over so quickly, but in a good way. I loved learning more about Cornelius and seeing all the character's relationships grow. Can't wait for the next installment.
