Rate this book
“Nicole Jardim walks the talk, and I am confident that her programs will help ignite the hormone balance you are most needing and restore your vitality.” —Dr. Sara Gottfried, New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure and The Hormone Reset Diet

A life-changing step-by-step natural protocol to ignite lasting hormone balance and improve everything from PMS, period pain, and heavy periods to irregular cycles and missing periods, from Nicole Jardin, certified women’s health and nutrition coach and co-host of the podcast The Period Party.

For most women, getting their period sucks. Bloating. Cramps. Acne. Aches. Moodiness. Messiness. No wonder we call it The Curse! For many, it’s not just an inconvenience—it’s a colossal life disruption, forcing them to miss work, school, appointments, or dates.

We’ve been encouraged to medicate away common period problems with birth control and ibuprofen, and just survive the mood swings as best we can. But as Nicole Jardim explains, periods aren’t a nuisance, they’re information. When you learn to decode your period (or lack thereof), you’ll be able to recognize the underlying hormone imbalances causing your period problems and know how to fix them naturally with Jardim’s proven six-week protocol to resolve even the most challenging hormone imbalances and menstruation issues.

Joining the ranks of books by Jolene Brighten, Sara Gottfried, and Aviva Romm, Nicole Jardim’s Fix Your Period is essential for women plagued by PMS, irregular, painful, or heavy periods, PCOS, Endometriosis, or fibroids—and for anyone who wants to take charge of her hormonal health—and regain control of her life—naturally.

The bulk of the book consists of strong statements (some woo-woo (a la “dangerous toxins"), others more medically-sound), but with little or inadequate research/reference/support/relatable study. The audio book also did not come with PDF references/citations and studies/results aren’t included IN the text regularly.

I am a lawyer, I am not swayed easily by reasonable-sounding arguments. I want evidence.

For example, Jardim quips cold beverages and smoothies may cause period cramps. WHAT? I need to know more. Should I stop having ice in my water? Where is that research? Explain please. 🙋🏻‍♀️

She also makes inaccurate statements. For example, Jardin says gut biome imbalance causes chrons disease (with no source) truth: the cause of chrons disease is UNKNOWN

Another example; several statements about estrogen-insulin-LH are made, yet when I googled the “fact” presented, 1) new studies said the opposite or 2) the “fact” only applies with PCOS, etc. So it’s not necessarily “true” and needs more context.

Dietary Recommendations are also made without why/how.

For example, Jardim suggests increasing protein and fat at breakfast for improved blood sugar. I don't disagree, but she doesn't explain why this works/how it helps. There’s also no mention of the second meal effect, the vinegar effect, and/or the insulin index. (low-carb isn't necessarily best for people with insulin resistance / blood Sugar issues because there is still an insulin load with meat, sugar-free, etc. even though there isn't dietary glucose >.< ) 😑😣 likewise not mention of how consuming fiber or vinegar with glucose/carbs blunts blood sugar spikes and improves insulin sensitivity 😩

There are also a few big leaps with “research”.

For example, jardim says “gluten is harmful to the thyroid,” and “going GF will support your thyroid.” Her reason/basis/support? a study that said celaics are 3x more likely to have thyroid disorders and they feel better giving up gluten. 🛑

Note: my RED FLAG 🚩 test with “health” books is b12. This simple issue can generally reveal if someone is regurgitating or has an expert command. jardim fails; she states "b12 is only in animal sources" 🛑 B12 IS IN DIRT and most meat-eaters are B12 deficient so everyone should take it.

Truth: Bacteria and some archaea are the *only* organisms to produce B12 (cobalamin) These 🦠 are on the plants that herbivore (!) animals eat; this is literally how “meat” gets b12. You could also just take out the “middle man” 🙄

But for real, everyone take some b12 (unless you’re a farmer eating veggies you don’t wash super well.)

There's also a lot of "girlfriend" talk such as “oh hey! cortisol!" (so many of those 👋) and phrases like “period paradise" "boss lady hormone" "good for Instagram but not your bod" "card carrying feminist" etc., which makes it cute and casual but also weird/awkward at times 🤷🏻‍♀️

for some positives: Jardin claims many women have thyroid issues and go undiagnosed because doctors do not do a full panel (she says they only look at TSH and T4) sooo you should ask for a full panel AND that you should compare your numbers to establish "functional" or "optimal" values rather than look at the “normal/average" because those ("averages") are set by the lab and could be "off” (her words)

I also liked her suggestion of saying "Probably not, but let me think about it" if you're a people pleaser and need to say no more. BRILLIANT 💯

The entire chapter on all the options for non hormone birth control is exceptionally comprehensive👌 I am impressed.

==========SUMMARY===========

Jardin's 6-week plan:

1. start eating whole foods
2. control and test your blood sugar (yes, like you are diabetic)
3. improve gut biome + elimination diet (GF)
4. use hippie natural products + limit screens, no wireless headphones or microwaves 🙄
5. control/reduce your stress/sleep more (exercise less, possibly)
6. check your thyroid (get a full panel)

generally: Whole Foods/no crap, no caffeine, no sugar, no processed grains (pasta), no wheat/gluten, dairy in moderation, no alcohol, low carb strongly encouraged by not said explicitly

Overall, Huge pushes for bone broth (it's a miracle cure, apparently), grass fed meat, full-fat dairy, non-cow dairy, and things like coconut oil. She's anti-soy (for the most part), anti-gluten, and beans only 2-3x a week. She also makes comments like plant foods have anti-nutrients (no explanation) and states you're not really getting enough protein with plants bc they're hard to digest, or something. (TBH, it felt like I was reading something from WAP).

Jardin also quips that you can't recover from HA/missing periods without meat daily, and possibly every meal, her explanation is “meat is superior” 🙇🏻‍♀️.

Recommends red wine over liquor and beer because they're made from wheat/grains that are "Bad" 🥂 (truth: wine is boozy sugar water.) Odd advice after a long chapter talking about glucose/sugar and insulin?!

Take magenisum supplements

Meals should be 1/2 carb (by "carb" she mostly means greens/salad) 1/4 fat, 1/4 protein. some anecdotal support for this ratio.

She also frequently encourages seeing an NP, which is probably what you should do instead of reading this book 😬

There was also a chapter on syncing with your cycle. It seemed "borrowed" from WomanCode: Perfect Your Cycle, Amplify Your Fertility, Supercharge Your Sex Drive, and Become a Power Source. TBH, I did like how Jardin summarized it. Seems logical.. and goop-y 🤪

Phases (if no period, use the moon)

BLEEDING (new moon)
rest & relax time, use intuition, eat iron, seaweed, mushrooms, greens bc of period, up hydration, yin yoga, no social events, "me" time, set goals/intentions

FOLLICULAR (wax moon)
renewal phase w. creativity, outgoing/extroverted vibes so be social, start new projects, make decisions, speak up!, suggests low carb more fats until appetite increases as you approach ovulation (then add complex carbs like potato, GF grain, squash), eat fermented to reduce bloat, HIIT before ovulation to build muscle (if training)

OVULATION (full moon)
energy, fertile, seduction phase, we look more attractive/confident this week, use brainpower (trivia, job interview), increased concentration, meet goals, "superwoman mood" she says, eat nutrient-rich, HIIT/spinning, say "YES" more, schedule painful things (eg dental work)

LUTEAL (wain moon)
be alone, attention to detail (do book keeping), slowness, withdrawn/intorvery, rest/recovery, clean & organize, ease into a routine, work from home, cancel social, examine whats working, low carb, sesame/sunflower seeds, examine why angry/bummed out, moderate exercise (dance, spin) then taper off.

I learned a lot of helpful information, but I still disliked this book because 1) there was too much "omg girlfriend!" type language in it, and 2) (most importantly) I found it hard to trust her explanations about the science. Especially when I got to the part about how EMF from your cell phone is harmful. Really?! The WHO says there's no evidence that EMFs are a health risk. So what other research is she spouting indiscriminately? I'm not sure, so I'm taking everything with a grain of salt.
I recommend The Period Repair Manual instead for more concise--and perhaps more trustworthy--explanation and guidance.

So maybe you looked at the cover of this book and thought, "Ugh, I don't want to spend hours reading about my period." Wrong! You DO want to read this book. In addition to approaching the topic with a good sense of humor, this book is chock full of information that will help you feel better, even if you aren't feeling particularly bad. Full disclosure, my own period sucks and I have decided to eliminate it entirely which has massively improved my life, but after reading this book I am persuaded that maybe, MAYBE I could have the results she describes without taking the Pill.

The book lays out a six week plan for fixing your period that has a lot of excellent info - the nutrition section alone is helpful not just for balancing your hormones but is consistent with what a lot of my other doctors and naturopaths have told me. (It has always been shocking to me how many doctors have little to say about nutrition - not so here!) I do love my carbs, so reading about how bad sugar and carbs are for you always makes me sad, But she makes a good case here. She also has awesome instructions for beginning an elimination diet, which I have done and which helped me immensely (with FAR less great help than this!)

I have not yet fully followed the protocol here, because step one is getting off birth control, but I've started to implement the nutrition recommendations and they seem to be helping. Bottom line, this is an entertaining and extremely informative book that demystifies a lot of this stuff and breaks down the science in a way even a science-phobic person like me can understand. The author has a great voice, is not overly crazy strict with her protocol, and knows a ton. Basically, I wish she was my gynecologist. Thanks to NetGalley, Nicole Jardim and Harper Wave for this great book, which is a solid five star read and jam packed with useful information!

The science on how all of our hormones and systems work was fascinating and I learned a lot from that. I also feel like I better understand how interconnected our bodies really are (why did I not learn this in school?). Some of her suggestions, however, were a bit unrealistic to "normal" people- and even highly privileged. She also recommended things like vaginal steaming- which from other research I have seen, isn't really a helpful tool. Anyway, the science was great, but I'll be looking elsewhere for more realistic recommendations.

Disappointing if I’m really honest . Are books now using the vulnerability of others to make their fame.
It’s click bait but in book form . People with longstanding conditions are just not going to get fixed in 6 weeks regardless of what the book states.. just sad that women facing struggles see this and have hope then get disappointed. Unfair and unrealistic.

So do you know that woman's menstruation is a fifth vital sign (for whom can be applied)? That cramps, pain, anovulation, PMS, PMDD and other fun things are usual but never normal? And still, these things are somehow normalised and even joked about, often dismissed by medical practitioners by giving you either one, or another pill, which only masks the symptoms, but never solves the underlying problem.

Books as this one by Nicole Jardim sheds a lot of useful information on the topic, by giving an explicit overview on various problems that women's bodies encounter and of course reasons behind it. This goes hand in hand with a program based on lifestyle changes, which, if followed, can give a helping hand to our bodies. What I liked a lot that I havent found in many other books is that elimination diet should not be *forever*.

I share the same feeling with some readers thst the style used in the book sometimes bothered me (hey guuurl and ya know), but I understood the intention here - book is packed with medical information and Jardim's girlfriend style made it a bit lighter.

So, if you are a woman, identify as a woman, raise a girl or just know some women around - read this or any other book from the theme. The world would be a much healthier place if we could talk with our bodies and not dismiss their messages.

Wow I absolutely loved this!! So informative without reading like a textbook and I have copied multiple recipes and tips that I will be using. As someone who doesn't experience abnormally horrific periods I still found things I can use for myself and ways to improve my overall health

This information is for everyone!! Not just for those who have periods. I will definitely be buying a copy for myself so that I can highlight and refer back to

When you have period problems, it is linked to more than just PMS.

Continuously women are being swept under the rug when describing their symptoms or given band aid solutions to the issues.

That was me in that case.

I started looking for answers outside of the doctors who are not helping me. For once, I am finding solutions to the direct issues that I am having.

Love this book. Super informative and will open your eyes to your body that you never knew existed and the importance of it.

I think every woman should read this book! Tons of interesting and easily digestible information. If you’ve ever been interested in cycle cycling workouts, understanding the phases of your cycle, getting off hormonal birth control, and how to balance your hormones read this book. Learned so much about my body I’m sure I’ll revisit this book.

Packed with thoroughly researched content, "Fix Your Period" is a golden resource for any woman experiencing period-related problems and/or hormonal imbalances. Even with only minor period issues, it was super helpful for me to get to know my body better - and treat it better, too.

The first section of the book covers the biological ABC of periods, from how the cycle works, the functions of key hormones, the effects of their imbalances, to what various period problems are trying to tell you. This part is jam-packed with scientific information, and you will want to make a lot of highlights for your own reference - but funny enough, the author somehow manages to use just the right amount of humor to make me smile and feel like I can really resonate with the content and all the women going through the same thing. I learned a lot - for example that tender breasts before period are a sign of progesterone deficiency, or that sharp pain and having to take painkillers during the period is common but NOT normal.

Next, we have the Six Week Program, a super accessible plan to help your hormones balance out, highly focused on diet and lifestyle. Who would have known that you can fix, like, almost everything in your body through diet and lifestyle? Actually, it sounds so obvious, but Jardim really explains each little thing with science (e.g. what compound in broccoli influences specific hormones and how that can help solve period problem x). I'm planning to fully implement it (today is Monday, it's a sign if I ever needed one) and report the results. Oh, and at the end, we also get delicious sounding recipes, resources and motivating words of encouragement from the author.

The cover would suggest that this book is directed at young teenagers, but it's not the case. I sure wish I had read it sooner, but it's dedicated to all women regardless of their age. It's a present I wish I could give everyone, to be honest.

*Thank you to the Publisher for a free advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Fix Your Period was a very informational read!
It certainly had some crude language and could be a little inappropriate at time, so I would recommend caution (be ready for some swearing, talk of sexual things, and unnecessary politically correct statements). But overall a solid, holistic guide to understanding women's health and hormones better.

Author Nicole Jardim lists out lots of symptoms and likely causes of those symptoms, which I found to be extremely helpful. She talks about the different hormones, their functions, and what can cause them to become imbalanced. There's also a lot of information about healthy lifestyle; food, blood sugar levels, gut health, toxins in our products, exposure to EMFs, and how these things can impact our hormonal health and menstrual cycles.

In the back of the book there are a lot of recipes to help you complete the 6 week "fix your period" program that this book promotes. There's also a list of resources and supplements.

I recommend this book if you are having hormonal trouble and need some help understanding what's going on and how to fix it!

Actually learned a lot of new info from this, and it was easy to read. You can page foreword to the sections that may relate to you or read the whole thing. The author offers a plan in the second part of the book, but also explains her own knowledge of different scenarios, hormonal imbalance situations, etc in the first half of the book.

A large majority of this is about changing what you eat. Feels like it's coming from a place of diet culture. The reality for me is that I don't believe that "food is medicine" so it was hard for me to connect with the writing and solutions. Might be helpful for someone who is open to completely changing what they eat.

At the start of this book I really appreciated the messaging, especially the positivity around it. I loved how Jardim stresses that seeing our bodies as fighting us or being against us is not the correct perspective to take, but rather that we should see any symptoms our bodies are sending us as communicating that something is wrong and that we need to do something about it. I loved the idea that we should especially tune into menstrual health as it acts as a canary in the coal mine for deeper issues. And I appreciated her inclusive language at the beginning of the book. I think that raising people’s awareness of how their bodies work and how our hormones are so important and how so many things play into our hormones is very important. So I was really here for the first part of the book.
My issues came with the 6 week program. While I do think we all need to be more aware of how the foods we eat and the stress we undergo and the environments we live in play important roles in our hormonal health, most of the recommendations made in this program are simply not feasible or accessible for most people. When the statistics show that an overwhelming majority of people don’t even eat a single fruit or vegetable every day, advising people to then have these compose half of their plates for each meal is a huge change. On top of that, you’re asking people to give up gluten, dairy, sugar, caffeine and alcohol? Even if it’s for a short amount of time, this is just not going to work for a lot of people. Then add on asking people to change their exercise, tech use, travel, and work schedules? And having them track their blood sugars like a diabetic would, and get multiple types of testing done, and track their cycles and bowel movements? Most people just don’t have the time or the money for this kind of thing. There’s a great deal of money and privilege built into this program that make it unviable for most of the population, unfortunately. So do I think that raising people’s awareness on trying to improve their habits in these different areas is important? Absolutely. But do I think most people actually have the resources to be able to diligently follow the program? I’m afraid not.
There also are some recommendations that I’m a bit wary of, such as consuming raw dairy products or the idea that gluten is harmful to everyone, regardless of health issues. Plus the alarm brought up around things like shampoos and beauty products or cell phones. Sure, should we be concerned about some of the chemicals and such in our everyday lives? Yeah. Can most of us really do anything about that? Again, I’m afraid not.

Nicole Jardim has unleashed a period revolution upon the masses! If all Sex Ed classes covered what is contained in these pages, the world would be a much different and better place.

What a delight to discover that the way to help period issues is to help your gut! Who knew? Jardim spells it out in easy, accessible steps, with humor and love.

I started practicing the Fertility Awareness method to take charge of my fertility and free myself from the systematic and toxic oppression of pharmaceutical companies who told me that the only way to control my body was to drug it up. What I found was a lifestyle of freedom, in harmony with the natural rhythms of the earth and of my cycle.

‘Fix Your Period’ compliments my personal goals perfectly. This book is an infinitely valuable resource for anyone looking to clean up their hormonal health and live a more empowered life.

Every cycling woman has a right - and should know - how our cycles work, but this information was not taught to the majority of us at any point in our lives. Hence why there are so many women who struggle with menstrual issues ranging from PMS to endometriosis to fertility concerns. Having faced the growth of a big fibroid in my late 30s and not understanding how this possibly could've happened to me, I started digging deep and was lucky enough to find Nicole and begin to learn from her about how my hormones work. The release of this book took things to the next level, bringing all the information I needed into one place. This book is packed full of deeply researched and scientifically-based information that guides you in how to balance your hormones, no matter what your issue is. Honestly, this book should be read by OB-GYNs as much as by the lay person. There are so many options beyond birth control and surgery, and we deserve to have all the information.

Fix Your Period is a well-researched resource for all people of the female species looking to make that "time of the month" less challenging. Every woman should be able to read a book like this to understand how their body works. No one ever talks to girls/women about their hormones and how they affect EVERYTHING. We are just told we get "hormonal" and there isn't anything we can do besides eat chocolate and wallow. Bullcrap. Fix Your Period provides a six week plan to help females have better periods. I look forward to taking the steps mentioned and improving my monthly flow without the need for additional hormones.

I received this as an ARC in return for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for allowing me to read this title.

There were things I liked about this book and things I didn’t. I enjoyed learning about all of the hormones and their function. What was hard for me was trying to make this applicable. Through my lens as a pelvic PT I just cannot see patients literally being able to adopt all of these guidelines. Paying for a gluten free, dairy free diet is challenging. Paying for a glucometer/lancets to test blood sugar is challenging. Asking your provider to run tests for alllllll the things can be challenging (use of resources). Wearing organic tampons, vaginal steaming (ugh), scheduling appointments like going to the dentist during ovulatory phase, avoid running on your period, should I continue? So I would read this with a grain of salt. If anything read it to learn how your cycle functions.

I was so eager to read this book, that I pre-ordered it before it was even released, lol! And I have to say I was NOT disappointed. This book is super easy to read and so relatable. The author writes in a way that's fun and sassy, but everything is backed up with science. I think she cites hundreds of studies in this book. But what I really appreciated was that she literally lays out actionable steps that you can take to heal any and ALL crappy period symptoms naturally. And they're all doable without having to spend thousands of dollars. I'm all about learning things, but I REALLY want to WHAT I can do to get results, NATURALLY without drugs. That's exactly what this book does. And good news-->I FIXED MY PERIOD. YAY! No more cramps, PMS, or other period problems. Everything is beautiful now in that department. If you have a period that drives you crazy each month, or if you have women in your life that struggle with their hormones, definitely read this book. It's a game changer!

Fix Your Period helped me understand that I’m not the only female with issues that the Dr’s visits don’t ever address. This is a great book for learning about the things we should know, but were never taught. We are not educated on the intricacies of how our cycles should work and this book will help you understand all the things you thought you knew. I wish I had read this 15 years ago!
Also, I was glad to read that the best way to help balance my hormones starts with a healthy diet, and not another "quick fix" pill. Thanks for providing us with a very clear explanation of hormones and hormonal balance for a better life, month by month!

This is a must-read for all young women. As a health educator, I know how important body literacy is. Knowing about and understanding how the body works is EMPOWERING and can help people make informed decisions that support their health throughout life. Learning how to care for our bodies from the start (rather than later on down the road, or paying attention only when things are uncomfortable) is exactly what we need.
I grew up reading the classics like "Our Bodies, Ourselves" and "Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom"... Nicole's book "Fix Your Period" belongs in the hands of this generation's young people too! :)

After reading “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” by Toni Weschler, this was the second book I decided to read in the department of fertility health.

This book was an easy and fun (and funny) read, not textbook like at all which made it enjoyable. Nicole explains how all the hormones are intra connected from our brain hormones all the way down to our ovaries. She provides a comprehensive 6 week program to healthy fertility which I’m following now and have seen difference in my skin and body within a couple weeks. I haven’t bloated at all during this duration, my skin is cleared up and I feel like I have a lot of energy back.

Nicole Jardim also has a podcast that I started listening to called the “The Period Party” and plenty of YouTube videos that are very informative. Highly recommend it to all the female bodies out there!

I sent this thank you note to Nicole 50 pages in.

Hi Nicole, I just started your book and I wanted to express my extreme gratitude for this undertaking. I’ve had horrible periods since age 11 & reading about all the intricacies of the body is helping me develop a newfound respect for myself. Thank you for facilitating this. You are a true conduit for women understanding their bodies. I used to get mad that the male dominated medical industry couldn’t figure out how to help us- but why would they? It’s not their problem, it’s ours. Because of you, I no longer see my period as a problem. I see my body & cycle as a beautifully complicated love letter that I get to decipher & pour into every month. Thank you for framing this information so perfectly. And teaching women the importance of self-agency. You are the prophet so many women have been waiting for. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
