I've drawn many pictures of dogs and monsters in my life, many of which you could find on the edges of math homework and science tests. I've always been a storyteller, learning the art of exaggeration early on.
My husband and I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan with our three young kids. I’m forever looking to be surrounded by books, food and laughter (in any order). I spend my days in my studio that lives above our coffee shop, Factory Coffee.
As a former classroom teacher, I taught high school English Language Arts, Biology, and Integrated Science. I'm cofounder of Read and Write Kalamazoo (RAWK) — a literacy-focused nonprofit modeled after 826 National. RAWK is devoted to celebrating and amplifying youth voices through the cultivation of reading and writing skills, via joy, creativity, equity and access.

I extend my gratitude to Macmillan Audio, Roaring Brook Press, the author Emmy Kastner, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to listen to this delightful audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I envisioned a scene with lots of rocks, rocks of all kinds, being passed around as the narration played. This one seemed a bit heavy on the big words, words many only learned in science class like sedimentary and metamorphic, so does seem to require a bit more hands-on, which can spur comparison for likes and differences, texture, and such. Obviously this one isn't aimed at babies, so I'm assuming the target audience is more kindergarten or early elementary although, quite frankly, some of the material and details could serve as a great refreshed for just about any age.
I absolutely love the narration, which utilizes children's voices to ask questions and inject comments. That should make it all the more relatable to young listeners. We all like to hear/see someone who reminds us of ourselves. The book also emphasizes that it's good to ask questions. To be curious. That's how we learn, so a good thing to emphasize. Who knows, some budding scientists may be inspired by this book/series. Thanks #NetGalley #MacmillanAudio #MacmillanYoungListeners and #RoaringBookPress for this delightful series. It's nice to be taken back to that childhood stage or wonder.
As one who studied Geology, I love this book and being able to share my passion of rocks in all their brilliant diversity with my kids.
I enjoy that this is not just about rocks, but about mountains, islands, caves, volcanoes, continents, and the different types of rocks: sedentary, metamorphic, and igneous. This gives kids a good foundation into the science of geology.
Best part when reading about metamorphic rocks when it mentions heat and pressure, not necessarily two concepts my kids comprehend jointly, but they do know squeeze. And they energetically exclaim SQUEEZE! At that part of the book!
I recommend this book for a way to help kids get interested in the geologic features around us!
This is a cute little audiobook, that gives a good overview about how different types of rocks are formed. I appreciated that child narrators, since that helps keep younger kids engaged. I imagine I will listen to this many times.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great Nonfiction children’s book with a ton of information on rocks. The audiobook was well read, with great audio details such as music and kids voices. It kept my 4 year old and 6 year old engaged the whole time.
We listened at 1x speed which was perfect for the littles. Thank you Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this advanced audio copy.
This audio tells you alot about rocks how they formed and what get trapped in them and what you might see if they break apart even in 6 minutes, I think kids around 3 to 6 would find this a fun fact interesting book. I would listen to this with your children in the car to thank you netgalley
Adults loved it, Stella was not that interested. A lot of big words for a board book, but Stella loves other books with more complex stories than this one.
