"Architectural Drafting for Beginners" is a practical and instructive drafting primer that introduces, and progressively guides, the beginning drafter through basic drafting techniques and processes related to wood framing and concrete slab construction. Through presented examples, drawing projects and step-by-step illustrations, the novice drafter is introduced to the field of architectural drafting. Its intent is to introduce basic architectural drafting skills and processes in a simplified and professional manner.
This book was a pleasant surprise. I was hoping in purchasing this book I'd learn just how exactly architectural drafting was done. It far surpassed expectations. Everything I ever wanted to know about architectural drawing was in this book--and much, much more. From sectioning to floor plans; site plans to roof plans, this book covers nearly exhaustively the inner workings of drafting.
You learn the basics. First, about elevations. Side. Rear. Next, sections. Architectural notes next to that. Next up, roofs! Hip roofs. Gable roofs. Shed. Flat. Clerestory. Mansard. Gambrel (barn). Clipped hip and clipped gable. Next up, floor plans: dimensions, architectural ticks, and extension lines. And so it goes. Near the end the book reminds you that these sorts of drawings are "legal documents," so care is taken to be as detailed and professional as possible.
I deliberately took my time on this one. Two months of slowly and methodically going through each chapter, practicing the process of drafting a floor plan or site plan, measuring each room and space like a professional architect. I bought vellum paper, architect's ruler, mechanical pencils, and extra copy paper for practice. I took this book seriously, researched each technique that either confirmed or supplemented the lessons. Two months later, I've got a solid foundation in drafting. Not bad.
If you're looking for a solid start before moving to Autodesk CAD or REVITS, this is the place to start. I highly recommend it.
