Alex Black is enjoying the slower pace of life as the city’s only consulting mage. But jobs like capturing a mischievous imp hellbent on destroying an innocent couple’s home offers only momentary reprieve from the danger looming on the horizon.

Bodies have been popping up around town, and the police have no idea who’s behind it. Her partner Chase has a theory though — a theory which plunges them into a world where ritual sacrifice and magic-slinging foot soldiers are everyday tools employed by dark and mysterious business rivals. Caught in the middle of a growing war, Alex and Chase must choose who to ally themselves with, if only to prevent the greater of two evils from creating a dangerous device worth billions on the global black market.

Compulsively readable, Black Market is an immersive and suspenseful ride through a world where magic may be real, but it’s only as powerful as the one who wields it.

A strong follow up in what is turning out to be a great new Urban Fantasy series, set in a dark and intense supernatural world where there is no clear good or bad, just a sliding grey scale that seems to head nearer the darker end than the lighter - including Alex herself - just how I like my books! An interesting tale, introducing new characters and a break neck ride of a mystery where there are many sides and no obvious right from wrong. Alex barely gets to pause for breath before yet another player tries to take her out - again! I have to say one of the major highlights of these books is Alex's partner in crime and business, Chase, a geek who turns out to be a bit of a badass at times and utterly loyal to Alex. This was dark but also fun and I really enjoyed this read.

This is one of those stories you can just sit back and enjoy… let it wash over you. The pacing is quick, the read easy, with just a few missing/added words sprinkled throughout but no major errors jumping out of the page.

Alex finds herself in a mess again, investigating the murders of old men… but nothing is as it seems. There weren’t a lot of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, but the story was still entertaining. Teaming up with Chase, her best friend and thief, they need to call in some favours to try to figure out what’s going on. Be prepared to hear how a witch and a mage are different, repeatedly. And I don’t mean that you’ll learn a new facet of how they’re different, I mean you’ll hear how witches are slow and mages are fast several times throughout the course of the story, just in case you forgot.

I enjoyed the three sets of “villains” in the story. And I mean that I really hated one group, and the other two were sort of popcorn villains, so big and bad that they’re almost funny.

The end of the story was really worth reading the whole book for. Some mind-bending stuff goes on, and it’s satisfying. I will likely pick up the third book in the series.

This is the second book in the "black" series, and the stories are still fun and still perfect for a long car ride, or rainy afternoon. These are entertaining, quick reads. If you like stories with magic, in modern day settings, with a strong female main character, you may like these. I suggest reading the first one first -- not because you need for this one to make sense, but because it's a good story too!

The third in the series is due out soon, and I am looking forward to it as well!

Kindle Unlimited tho received free copy myself. Read the novella, then 1 then 2 back to back. Saw some comments/reviews about typos etc; if I can understand a book, which in my case is usually audio but sometimes actually reading, and story is interesting, that is what counts.

The New Black {newsletter subscriber exclusive novella}
Black Magic {Black Records Book 1}
Black Market {Black Records Book 2}
