Nocturne Falls #12

The Werewolf Dates the Deputy

Rate this book
Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year. The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.

Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all.

Fire chief and werewolf, Titus Merrow, has a pretty good life. Great family, great job, great friends. No love interest, sure, but he’s got too much going on to worry about that. Like the 10k race for charity that he’s helping to plan. Too bad the woman he’s planning it with is so hot. No, wait. He meant annoying.

Sheriff’s deputy and valkyrie, Jenna Blythe, has somehow gotten stuck working on a charity event with her boss’s brother. Not only is Titus Merrow full of himself, but he challenges every suggestion she makes about the race. Why are the handsome ones always so smug? She can’t wait to beat him in the competition and bring home the trophy for the sheriff’s department. Again.

But when they answer a call together and things explode, dangerous magic is unleashed. They’re suddenly forced to work together. Literally. And the magic only gets more treacherous as time ticks forward. Not even Jenna’s good friend seems to be able to help them as shady forces lurk in every shadow.

Swords and sorcery abound, and Jenna’s past comes back to haunt her. She and Titus are left with no choice but to question everything – and everyone. Who’s targeting them? Is what they’re feeling real? Can love survive against darkness? Can a valkyrie learn to run with the pack?

This is one of my absolute favorite cozy paranormal romance series. In this book, werewolf and fire chief Titus and police officer Valkyrie Jenna are always at odds, even more so when they’re assigned to plan a community event together. But when they’re sent out on a call together and cursed by a spell that binds them with a love potion, suddenly they can’t leave each other’s sides. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, and I loved seeing all my favorite characters from Nocturne Falls make appearances in this one. The inclusion of Jenna and her love of the Hunky firefighters TV show was especially funny! This one turned out to have an interesting supernatural enemy to fight and a good mystery to solve.

The Werewolf Dates the Deputy by Kristen Painter

Book 12 of the Nocturne Falls series. Paranormal romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but better if you’ve read at least a few of the series books. I would recommend starting at the beginning for the full depth of the world building.

Nocturne Falls is a town were the paranormals live openly in public. Local water is spelled so that tourists and normals think it’s just a celebration of Halloween 365 days a year.
In this book, Titus, the fire chief and Jenna, a deputy go on an emergency call together and end up under a spell that keeps them within a hundred feet of each other. The werewolf and Valkyrie are forced to work together to discover who set them up and why the spell includes a love potion.

Fun, bewitching, and enchanting. Punny! Engaging too.
For some reason, I noticed they do a lot of eating in this book. They definitely get their 3 a day. It is amusing to revisit the town and its established restaurants from the series. Many of the previous series couples and residents make appearances in the story as the investigation becomes dangerous.
A wonderful addition to the series.

THERE. For better or worse I've finally completed reading this entire series in 2021. And in the case of this book, I'd say for better. It actually managed to keep up the pace throughout and created two likable characters to root for.
But man, when this series goes bad it goes really bad and when it goes good it goes...3 stars "I enjoyed it but feel no interest in ever coming back to it" good.

A few years ago when The Vampire's True Love Trials came out, I happened to mention in a group that I thought it would be funny for Jenna and Titus to end up together because they are both first responders and I'd love to see both of them get together. This year, my wish came true. I was so excited when I heard who the two main leads for this book would be. I absolutely adored the story, and how much detail was brought in. I know I probably say this for every book of Kristen Painter's but it is one of my favorites. There is a reason I keep buying her books, and it's that she doesn't let the reader down and takes time to craft stories that are relatable, and you can believe actually happened. This story had me laughing, crying, and cheering for love to overcome all. I really recommend reading the books that come before this story before reading this one. The side characters have all been introduced and expanded in previous books, so if you pick up the series with this book never having read them, you will probably feel as if something is missing. You will be able to identify the relationships without reading, but many of the events they discuss will need the other books to explain. I give the book 4.75 stars as I wanted just a little more at the end.

Loved this book! I have read the whole series and have been waiting for Titus to get his chance at love. This book can be read a a standalone but more enjoyable if you read more nice that there are old friends included in this book as well as new characters very well written and so much fun.

Followers of my reviews will know that the Nocturne Falls series holds a special place in my heart, yes even the books with the damn werewolves!

This 12th installment will definitely be a fan favorite as it tells the story of 2 characters that have been floating around the universe for a while now, although knowledge about them has been a little limited. Titus Merrow and Jenna Blythe.

Now if someone had asked me for a match for Jenna, I don't think a werewolf would ever be a suggestion, BUT Kristen makes it work. Jenna is so spunky and sarcastic that she reminds me a lot of me, which is probably why I like her. That and she isn't a natural fan of the werewolf probably helped a lot.

Some original and unusual circumstances keep the reader guessing, and yet again I am amazed at the imagination that must be required to keep coming up with new and original stories that keep even seasoned fans like myself from figuring everything out before it happens!

As I have said before - Although new fans could probably jump right in with this story as they are all complete in their own rights (no cliffhangers), I am more convinced than ever but at this point you are losing so many little things if you don't start reading them from the beginning. There are SO MANY layers to the characters and inside jokes that just don't work if you don't know the world. Hey as book 1 is currently free - seriously what do you have to lose?

An Easy 5 stars from me and definitely Melanie's Muses Approved!

I was so excited that Jenna and Titus got a book! They are some amazing characters. This is sort of an enemies to lovers story in a sense. Sure they are first responders, so they are always professional and have a good relationship in that sense, but when it comes to the yearly 10k race they are both very competitive. After all, the trophy goes to the winner’s department. Besides, Titus can be so annoying so Jenna just has to win. And the same goes for Titus lol. When I say enemies to lovers, I don’t mean like one of the romance books that has all the sex in it. It is very clean. In fact, it would be great for a teenager even.

When Jenna and Titus are responding to a call at a house, they are cursed with a spell. Jenna sees a horrible site just when they are hit with type curse. It is more of a shadow with glowing eyes. She keeps this part to herself because she is all to familiar with it from so many years ago. Is the entity there for her personally or up to something else? And what about the curse? Why would someone do that to her or Titus? Is he the real target? All they know is that there’s such a strong attraction there but they don’t know if it’s the curse at work or something real after working together to set up the 10k race. One thing’s for sure, they can’t get but so far away from each other now or they will experience some really bad physical pain due to the curse. But how can they break it? Now they have to share a house together because of this, but neither one knows what is real. All they know is it is a build up that is about to explode one way or another with the more time spent together.

This was such a cleverly written book. Ms Painter really wrote some good scenes that I wasn’t expecting, especially part of the end. And as usual, there were some really funny parts. I think my favorite part about it all was learning about Jenna’s past as a Valkyrie and what and all it entailed. That’s one of my favorite supernaturals.

I've been anxiously awaiting the next Nocturne Falls book...First, I love the cover. All of the NF covers are beautiful, but I particularly noticed how this one reveals a lot of the nuances of the story. Very clever! Jenna, a Valkyrie, and Titus, a werewolf, were a bit of adverseries due to the competition regarding a 10k race they support and help plan every year until they become inadvenrtently caught in a .... that must be removed ....well, you'll just need to read the book to find out the missing details as well as the consequences. Even with friends and family helping, Jenna's past becomes a part of their present and threatens their future. Can true love prevail?

Twelfth in the Nocturne Falls fantasy magical realism mystery series and revolving around a town full of supernaturals hiding in plain sight. The couple focus is on Deputy Jenna Blythe and Fire Chief Titus Merrow.

My Take
Ooh, the initial conflict is a charity relay 10K that the sheriff's department usually organizes. Not this year, as there's a battle between the sheriff's department and the fire department as to who gets the honor.

I like this story, and yet I don't like Jenna's character arc issue about Zoe. She has no idea but leaps to her own conclusions. That girl sure has a lot of bad back history!

Poor Jenna and Titus. Forced to spend time together. I gotta say Painter does come up with interesting scenarios for love, lol. We also get some insights into each of their homes and what they say about their owners.

It's all through third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Jenna's and Titus' perspectives. Gives us a chance to hear how attracted — no, no, NO — they are to each other. The issues they have. What each may have to reveal about themselves. The growth they're having to go through.

Ooh, that trip to the firehouse for Jenna is a crack-up. All the teasing the firemen give her, especially with that T-shirt she's wearing. Hubba-hubba, lol.

Oh, cute! Pandora's tag is "How can I get you home?"

The inciting incident rolls on from that initial conflict over the race with Jenna and Titus getting caught by that bomb. The action rises with their being unable to be apart and only gets worse when the crisis hits with that deadline. Oh, yeah . . . then it gets even worse!

Oh . . . and even worse. Oh, man.

That question that arises for each of them is scary. I know I'd want to know that I love (and he loves) because we want to. Oh, man, Alice sets them up "nicely", lol. It sure does give Titus and Jenna an excuse, lol.

Don't worry, there is plenty of action as well as character driving this story. And we learn a heckuva lot about valkyrie/berserker culture!

What it comes down to is that broken heart isn't always a bad thing.

The Story
It's a battle between Jenna and Titus over who is going to organize the charity 10K run. Yet another battle looms when they're both hit by that magic bomb, and Jenna is forced to move into Titus' house — because they can't be more than a hundred feet apart.

Swords and sorcery abound, and Jenna’s past comes back to haunt her. She and Titus are left with no choice but to question everything – and everyone. Who’s targeting them? Is what they’re feeling real? Can love survive against darkness? Can a valkyrie learn to run with the pack?

The Characters
Deputy Jenna Blythe is a valkyrie and a fell maiden who was in valkyrie special ops. Helgrind is the name of her sword. Seems Jenna likes to watch Real American Firefighters, hmmm . . . Ingvar Swenson, a seer, is an old friend of Jenna's from the wraith task force (who had gotten an apprenticeship with a well-known seer). Vikka is Ingvar's sword. Eric Peerson is Jenna's ex-boyfriend and her former commanding officer, a real jerk.

Fire Chief Titus Merrow, a werewolf, is Hank and Bridget's brother with a passion for woodworking. Zoe, a schoolteacher and a werewolf, is his ex-fiancée, by several years.

Nocturne Falls, Georgia, is . . .
. . . a town mostly owned by a vampire family, the Ellinghams. Elenora is the matriarch with three grandsons: the grumpy Sebastian who is engaged to Tessa Blythe, Jenna's sister, the head librarian at Harmswood, and another valkyrie with her cat, Duncan ( The Vampire's Fake Fiancée , 5); Hugh who is married to Delaney who runs Delaney's Delectables, an amazing sweets shop ( The Vampire's Mail Order Bride , 1); and, Julian who is married to Desdemona, who likes to perform at the new playhouse ( The Vampire's Accidental Wife , 8). Alice Bishop is Elenora's secretary and a very powerful witch.

Sheriff Hank Merrow, a werewolf, is married to another werewolf, Ivy ( The Werewolf Meets His Match , 2). They have two children, Charlie and Hannah Rose. Hannah says her first sentence! Birdie Caruthers is Hank's aunt, the police receptionist, and a core character in the series. Other deputies include Alex Cruz who is with Roxy St James, a paranormal romance writer ( The Shifter Romances the Writer , 6); May; and, Remy Lafitte, a vampire.

More of the town firefighters include Sam Kincaid, another werewolf, Bridget's boyfriend, and Ivy's brother; Liam Murphy, a leprechaun; Frank Childers; Skip Mulvaney who's married to Jeannie (a crossing guard and a weather witch); Brenden Nguyen; and, Kurt Amsler.

Bridget Merrow owns the local watering hole, Howler's. Other establishments include Big Daddy Bones; the DIY Depot; Guildman's, which is a menswear store owned by Dexter Guildman; Bell, Book & Candle is the local bookstore run by Agnes Miller, a witch; Zombie Donuts which are amazing with their Dr Prepper (in Jayne's honor; Miss Frost Solves a Cold Case , 1 (7.5)), the Reaper, Boo-berry Cake, and more and where Bess works; and, the Hallowed Bean is a coffee shop. Old Mrs Morris is a banshee who gets too loud once a year.

Pandora Williams is a realtor and a witch, who is married to Professor Cole Van Zant, her raven familiar who works at Harmswood ( The Professor Woos the Witch , 4). Kaley is his daughter. Marigold Williams is Pandora's sister, a green witch who owns the local floral shop ( The Detective Wins The Witch , 10). Charisma is yet another sister and witch, and Corette Williams is their mother . . . and a witch. Kelly is another witch and a nurse. Dominique, a witch, is on the town council.

The Lemmons own the house with the bomb. Dr Navarro is human but clued in. Chuck and Ben are orderlies. Nurse Lawrence is interested in disinfection. Darnell Mansfield is a security guard at the hospital. Harmswood Academy is a private school for supernaturals.

The male counterpart to a valkyrie (who have an affinity for felines) is a berserker, wild warriors paired in arranged marriages with valkyries. An elite group of berserkers are wolf soldiers, who are particularly attractive to Jenna. It takes a valkyrie and a seer to defeat a wraith, which is a trapped soul of an undesirable. Seers have different abilities: magic, healing, guiding battles, see or read the future . . . Leif Guddersen was a class ahead of Jenna, the big man on campus who wanted personal glory and identified as a wolf warrior. Kirsgut is Leif's sword. Other seers include Sola Skarsgard and Gren.

The Cover and Title
The cover is a mix of black, purple, greens, and blues as stars sparkle around the edges creating the sense of an off-center oval in a mix of greens and blues with a black shadowy figure in the middle. On either side is a brown rectangular shape of tree trunks while overhead it's a mix of black and green leaves. The title is in white with a thick black outline. Below the oval is a splish-splash of greens sitting atop a black border that showcases the white text for an info blurb and the author's name. On the left is Jenna with her pastel rainbow of white-blonde hair blowing in a stiff breeze. She's wearing a deep teal blue uniform with quite the sexy sweetheart neckline. Her right hand is holding her sword with its point down in the ground. With her left hand, she's holding Titus's right hand, and he's wearing a gray sweatshirt that represents the Nocturne Falls Fire Department and blue jeans. The series jack-o-lantern leans against Jenna's left leg with the wooden sign indicating the series info in a pale yellow below it.

The title is not quite true, The Werewolf Dates the Deputy, as it's more like the werewolf is stuck with the deputy and vice versa.

The Werewolf Dates the Deputy is book 12 in the Nocturne Falls series. This book is about Titus and Jenna. Titus is a werewolf, the fire chief, and brother to Hank, the sheriff, and Bridgett, the owner of Howlers. Jenna is a Valkyrie, a sheriff deputy, and sister to Tessa, Sebastian’s wife. I love a lot of the books in this series, but this is one of my favorites. I adored this book from beginning to end. It is so creative. It feels like the author has really continued to grow and improve even though she has already been writing such great books. I kept thinking throughout this book that her writing seems as though she is newly invigorated. There is something new and fresh to it.

I finished The Werewolf Dates the Deputy a couple weeks ago and didn’t get a chance to review it right away, so it is no longer fresh enough in my mind to leave a detailed review. I can say that I absolutely loved this book and will without a doubt be listening to it again. In fact, this is a series that will be a regular re-read / re-listen for me. It is a little like returning home whenever I read these books.

The narration was excellent. It is the same narrator for the entire series. He does a great job. I noticed in book 11 that his narration was a bit off and not what I have come to expect from him but he was back to 100% with this book.

I highly recommend this series. Even though, technically, you could probably read all these books as standalone, I think it will be so much more rewarding to start at the beginning and read them in order. There is a spin off series, Jayne Frost, that is also amazing and those overlap with this series so I recommend reading those concurrently.

Often times, by the time a series has reached book 12, it has so many characters and story lines that it can be hard to follow. Not the Nocturne Falls series. Kristin Painter does a wonderful job keeping each story enough of a stand-alone that new readers can enjoy it, but adding in older characters for the series' long-time fans. Werewolf Fire Chief Titus Merrow has been around through a lot of the previous books, and Valkyrie Jenna Blythe has deserved her own story since her sister found true love in The Vampire's Fake Fiancee, so it's great to see these characters come together. With less time needed for introductions, I would have liked to have a bit more depth to the story, especially the feelings between Titus and Jenna, but the book is still good. It's light and fun, the perfect summer read.

This is a great book; this is the twelfth book in the Nocturne Falls series written by Kristen Painter. The books in this series can all be read as a standalone but once you read one book you will want to read the other books because they are all good with great characters. Nocturne Falls is a town that celebrates Halloween every day of the year and also a place that paranormal’s can live and not have to hide what they really are. I am so happy that Jenna and Titus finally gets their story. Jenna Blythe is a Sheriff’s debuty and a valkyrie. Titus Merrow is the Fire Chief and werewolf. They get stuck working on a charity event together. They respond to a call at an empty house and end up getting caught in a love spell. They have to find out who put the spell on them and break it before the full moon makes it Permanent. Once I started reading this book I couldn’t put it down until the end. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. I can’t wait for the next book by this awesome author!

But be warned this is not a stand-alone book is part of a long-running series and I recommend you read at least a few of the previous books so that you get a chance to familiarize yourself with the characters in the town.

So here we are on book #12 of Kristen's Nocturne Falls series - and it only seems such a short while since book #1, but no doubt that is my middle aged brain playing tricks on me!

Fans of the series will be delighted to know that this offering holds up well against its predecessors - it has the same easy to read style and interesting characters that are synonymous with Kristen's work.

I can't see there being many disappointed readers amongst her devoted following as this story has a nice twisty plot and appearances by many of the series' recurring characters.

Roll on book #13.....

Jenna, who was happy when her sister moved to Nocturne Falls, but now feels lonely since her sister married and moved out. When the two are called to investigate suspicious activity in an empty house, a mysterious package explodes, one that contains a spell binding the two together. The pair and their friends frantically search for a solution as time runs out. As usual, a fun read.

Oh this was just good! After the other books that felt a little HO-him to me, I was afraid I’d take awhile to finish this book. But no. It’s interesting and entertaining. Jenna was always the badass Valkyrie donuts nice to read her story. And with Titus too, the fire chief werewolf. Both stubborn people. Pups eat been nice to read about the race the next year but oh well.

Hope the next book continues to be interesting.

Oh Nocturne Falls.... My favorite place to visit. Where it is Halloween 365 days a year. Our favorite Sheriff's Deputy and Fire Chief have finally gotten their own story. Valkyrie Jenna Blythe and werewolf Titus Merrow stumble upon dark magic which changes their lives forever. I actually thought I had this figured out wayyyy early in the book, but as normal, the author threw in a little twist to prove me wrong. Great story and great ending.

I wanted to wait to review this series. I've now completed it and I must say it was the most weirdest ridiculous serious i've ever read. It was far fetched and at times baffling. However, I totally and utterly loved it, I loved the fangs and the fur. these books achieved 5stars and its well deserved and I truly hope there is more. This series was relaxing there was plenty of laughs and also some sniffles. I want to return to Nocturne falls soon again. This is also a series of books i could listen to again.

I love coming back to Nocturne Falls.. it’s like coming home! I love these characters and I love this town! Finally Titus and Jenna gets a story. Jenna is a police officer and a Valkyrie and she wants nothing to do with the local fire chief.. not even playing a local fun run. Titus is a werewolf and he also would rather do anything than plan run with Jenna.. but unfortunately a curse has other ideas and forces them together. This is a great book and I can’t wait for another visit to where Halloween is 365 days a year!

Wow

Love love loved this book. Nocturne falls has had me hooked from book one and this is no different. Couldn't put it down. Can be read as a standalone or as the 12 book. Either way a fantastic read. Titus and Jenna are first responders for two different departments, bickering is their usual pass time especially while trying to organise a 10k run. A bomb of magic changes all that.

This one was an exciting adventure in Nocturne Falls. Jenna, a valkyrie, and Titus, a werewolf, are bound together by a love spell. Since these two give off sparks before being hit by the love spell, this pairing allowed for some interesting interactions as well as some humor. Magic, a wraith seeking new life and romance kept me turning the pages.

A New Favorite NF book

Deputy Jenna Blythe is a valkyrie with limited patience when dealing with Fire Chief Titus Merrow. When a dangerous spell forces them to work together, they are surprised to find their feelings for each other changing. It’s always fun to visit Nocturne Falls and catch up with the delightful cast of characters. This is an excellent addition to the series.

Bound by Love

Titus Merrow and Jenna Blythe are stuck together working on a charity 10k race thanks to Sheriff Bank Merrow, which, consider all they do is bicker, could be a problem.
It gets worse when an errant love spell makes the two fall in love and physically binds them to each other with only a leeway of moving a 100 yards apart.
There's also a wraith in the loose and Jenna has to catch it.
Another fun instalment with humour, danger, romance and banter.
Great stuff.

Another great story.

a story with twists and turns, favourite characters, Nocturne Fallls is so much the place I would love to visit. Kristen Painter, tells her tales and you can almost step through the pages, and visit. With a romance or two, what a great way to spend some time.

Always thrilled to read any Nocturne Falls books, this one though, kept me on the edge of my seat. I love seeing the "old" characters interacting with the currant ones, all the witty bantering back and forth. Also always enjoy seeing what the older ones are up to. However, my focus was on Titus and Jenna and their story! The only bad thing about this book was that it ended!

Jenna and Titus are at war, with both trying to plan the annual 10k charity race and disagreeing at every turn. Until a random call out throws them into a very different situation. When they’re forced to stick together I had to laugh. We learn so much about these two and their pasts and honestly I loved them through the story. It’s definitely an adventure and whilst the “bad guy” appears obvious I wasn’t expecting the twist.
