Having left the party to continue her training with Momohina, Yume overcomes a desperate crisis to return to Alterna. However, something is wrong. Will she be able to meet her comrades again? What is the true nature of the dark clouds hanging over Alterna? “Until she gets stronger, Yume's just gonna have to keep givin' it her all as her weak ol' self.” Yume enters the spotlight, showing her determination and growth in the episode “Howling Beneath the Moon, I am a Wolf.” Plus, three stories written as bonuses for the anime, including the story of Ranta recklessly challenging Moguzo to a cooking battle, “Justice and Justice,” and an afterstory revolving around the bounty that the party received for slaying Death Spots, “The Fun has Just Begun.”
Read this one pretty quickly, not too concerned about any of the lore details in this volume (mostly recap, but they did add some stuff about the different Archipelagos and Islands, like the Red Continent where the three eyed race lives and home to the Blood Thirsty Pirate gang; there was also a new species introduced as well, little creatures that tried to eat the captain of Momohima's ship).
This book is for the most part split into 4 focus characters: Moguzo, Ranta, Merry in the past, and then present day Yume's attempts to voyage back to Grimgar after having trained with the powerful magic fighter pirate, Momohima. Along the way, we'll catch up with many old faces, but it's interesting, there's a two year plus time gap between when Yume left and when she returns, so people have changed slightly. Will Haruhiro and co have met with some change too? I guess we'll see.
Change is the theme of the game with Merry's chapter as well, and it's not all welcome. We get to see Merry immediately after her comrades died (when she used too much magic in the caves, and didn't spare enough to heal them while fighting Death Spots I believe it was). Merry's "Hunter for hire" career before she joined Haru's troop isn't a very fun time, but it does give you a bit more perspective on Merry and why she is so cautious around Haru's group at first.
The worst chapter was easily the opening one, which sees us following character we know leave the plot for a time / characters that have become more bearable over time and were extremely grating early on. And to top it off, it's a cooking contest. So exciting! /s
Yume's growth and change is the other story on display. It includes some needed adventuring in this mostly introspective or slice of life chapter, as Yume and her pirate buddy find themselves shipwrecked, and trying to hop island to island any way they can. A few new characters introduced here, along with returning buddies, it was a decent section. And the ending basically will lead into 15. I'm really curious what the rest of team Haruhiro is up to, what Forghan is trying to do, and how this will shake out. It sounds like it's getting militaristic too and maybe heading to an endgame? I'd still like to see what the main dude from Orion is up to (I think he had a party mate he wanted to resurrect), learn the fates of Haru's other mates, and what the conclusion will be for the changed Merry.
The cute vignettes of the crew in Alterna were fun. I definitely used this book as a cover so I didn’t have to face where the present version of the crew are. That’s why it too so long.
It was great to see what Yume was up to and the events from some of the other characters perspectives, but I could've done without the fluff about the soruzo stand guy.
