They exist in myth and legend dating back to the earliest history of man. Different cultures have different names for the same creature, which has haunted the dark places of our collective psyche. 5 fanfreakingtastic Stars ⭐️
To be honest, at first I was going to give this a lower star because as most of you know, I don’t do animal deaths. This was a quick thing at the beginning and it was just told what happened. So there you go.
If it wasn’t for one of my challenges, I wouldn’t have found this awesome book. It is on kindle unlimited US but I’m buying the paperback and the kindle. And I LOVE these characters!
The main character is Will Greyeagle, he’s a cop and a former soldier of Afghanistan. Will and the police force start finding bodies that are mutilated etc. When the killer is spotted, Will takes time to go see his grandfather who is a Didanawisgi- I hope I spelled that right - he’s a powerful medicine man. His name is Jay Maroskah also known as White Bear.
•This is another thing I love about this book, it’s filled with Native America myths and Native Americans from all nations!! And the Lakota Dog Soldiers are in place to fight the evil.
I’m going to recommend this to all werewolf/horror lovers. This is the best werewolf book I have read. These are werewolves like you expect, very deadly and there is gruesome gore. So I’m done rambling. I’m going to leave a few quotes from the book, there are so many before each chapter. Some I’m actually putting in my motivational notebook.

This is an excellent gory werewolf novel.
More specifically thisis a Native werewolf story, so they're called Oolonga-Doglalla Dogmen.
Will Greyeagle is a former military vet now Detective. When 2 teens are found in a horrific crime scene, he arrives to investigate.
This is a gory book, with detailed gory crimes scenes and a dog death. So be warned before reading if that isn't your thing.
The one witness says she say Bigfoot, and isn't taken seriously. Will listens to her story and when checking her property, discovers maybe not Bigfoot but something unnatural.
As more crime scenes turn up and the Dogmen are scene, the hunt is on to stop them.
Helping Will ate his grandfather (a medicine man named White Bear) his cousin, Doc and the Hotametaneo'o aka Dog Soldiers. Using high powered weapons and Native American mysticism they're the only hope pf stopping the Dogmen.
This story has excellent Native American representation. Will wants to do what's right and help people, regardless that he's joined the police (white mans police force) and not the Rez Police. He wants to help people. Raised by his grandfather, he knows all the old Native stories and customs taught to him as a boy. They play a big part in this story. Several tribes are represented in the Dog Soldiers. Sweat Lodges, native mysticism, and the Wolf, Fox, and Eagle are all part of the story.
It's an excellent beginning of a trilogy. It starts fast and keeps the momentum going from beginning to end. If you want a different take on werewolves, read this book.

Mediocre monster of the week book, with artificial "Indian" flavor
**the double rape murder of a 16 year old girl by a werewolf in chapter one seemed a bit much**
This book remands me so much of the 1977 Nightwing by Martin Cruz Smith (Yes, the Gorky Park guy) But this time the Indian Shaman is the good guy.
I can't say that this author is appropriating Indian culture, but he was definitely inspired by the items in the gift shop.
The book itself isn't that bad, but if they made it into a move you'd see it soon on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Now I mostly enjoyed this book. Hell, I bought and am reading the next one but I do like lowbrow and trash. If you do too, especially if you like the 70's -80's classic horror schlock than this is for you. Just be aware that this seems to be more inspired by movies, or more specifically TV than by anything else.
-Oh hey. I did like that the main cast was mostly first nation people. even if they seemed like stereotypes, these were positive stereotypes. It was nice to read an action adventure with a non-white hero. I gave it an extra star for that.

A fantastic take on werewolves
I loved this book. It is a different take on werewolves involving Native Americans. As werewolves begin to brutally kill people in a small town, a Native American cop begins to investigate and draws the attention of the creatures. Once that happens, several tribes get involved and the hunt begins. The characters are great and the action is incredible. With lots of gore and lots of tense situations, I found myself drawn in and actually wishing the book was longer. The only reason I gave this one 4 stars instead of 5 was the amount of errors in grammar. The ending seems like a set up for a sequel and I would love one.

Quite the great read, a interesting take on the werewolf fiction. Interesting set of characters and good interaction. I have to applaud the author for making the focus group of this novel 'The first Nation people' making it as natural as posible, without giving into any negative remarks either in favor or against them. Really educative read in that aspect.

Started great, had some gripping action sequences and peaked at about 50%. Then morphed into a Aliens style plot with a heavily armed group taking on a bunch of enemies. The Native American aspect was a nice touch, but a romance subplot comes out of nowhere. It is very corny and rest assured will make you roll your eyes. Not to mention that the alpha male among the werewolves also gets a mate..again out of nowhere and this happens right in the climax.
Looks like the author did not know how to finish the story and just made up the finale.
Still the best werewolf book I have read is "What Vengeance Comes" by Anthony M. Strong.

Pushes werewolf fiction into something of a multiverse...
Let me just say that I am neck deep in werewolf fiction at the moment. Even so this book was a change of pace in a good way. The "werewolves" were not noble, pitiable nor admirable in any way. I've found very few works that pushed them into the realm of pure evil. This book does that in visceral and carnal way. I'm one to part 2....

I Hope It's Only A Legend
I love these novels. As a person who lived in Missouri for 35 years I have traveled all over the state and been to the Ozarks many times including the ruins of Ha Ha Tonka castle. It's a great joy to read about these places. The action is fast and furious and my favorite characters are Will Greyeagle and grandfather. The author must have done a tremendous amount of research and you will end this novel hoping this is only a legend.

After reading the Lakeview Man series, which contained references to the Apex Predator series, I just had to download the first book and read it. I'm very glad I did. This first book in the series is incredibly good. I particularly like the references to Native American traditions and history! I definitely recommend this book as well as the Lakeview Man series!!!!! (Now, I'm going to get the second book in this series and read it!!!)

Deputy Will Grayeagle is thrown into a battle with an ancient enemy the Oolong-Dodlalla has shown up in Southwest Missouri and Will and his Native American allies must do battle with creatures from their worst nightmares. Very good book.

Apex predator: Book one
I initially thought that this book would be a spin-off of Bloodborn series. The author deafly surprise me with his interpretation of werewolves. He definitely put a new twist on it. It’s hard to write a book that is both the same an different enough to be good. He did a good job making his stand out

I like this guys writing. He could use a little bit better editor. (Few typos) However, is writing is vivid and compelling. That is assuming, you like a good old fashion monster book as I do.

I couldn't sleep without finishing
I finished this book in a few hrs. I couldn't go to sleep before knowing how it ended. It kept my attention until the end and did not disappoint but I had to sleep with the light on. I look forward to the next book!

Solid story, particularly enjoyed the indigenous peoples aspect
The story takes off immediately with horrific murders, introduces the main character, then reveals the problem of solving the murders as they mount up! No slow spots anywhere. Makes for a great one day read!

Violence Rating: 3/5 - Full Moon Frenzy
Warning: If you’re triggered or offended by topics like SA, I’d recommend skipping the first chapter.
A mix bag of horror and mysticism.
This is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde novel, offering both enjoyable elements and some that felt a little out of place. It's a quick and digestible read, perfect for a break between heavier books.
The writing is straightforward and easy to follow, with dialogue that feels natural. The author's use of footnotes to explain concepts and Native American words was a great touch and personally I truly appreciated the effort. I also found the mystical elements to be a powerful and magical addition to the story, especially at the beginning. And I must admit, Will’s relationship with his car was a charming detail. I can completely relate to personifying a vehicle and having that kind of connection as I’m doing the same thing with my motorcycle and often talk to him during my rides, haha.
However, the story takes an unexpected and jarring turn around the halfway point. It suddenly shifts into a more martial, military-style action that, while it’s a genre I personally love and read, didn't seem to fit the tone or initial direction of the book. It felt like the focus was pulled away from the main plot. And on the same note, the mystical aspects, which I initially loved, became somewhat exaggerated and started to feel chaotic rather than magical. If I’m being perfectly honest, the story became too much of everything, and I was disappointed to see that because I really loved, loved, loved the beginning.
It’s a short novel with a strong start and some genuinely good ideas, but it unfortunately gets lost in its own complexity by the end. On the bright side, it's a quick, easy read if you're looking for something light, but it may not fully satisfy those looking for a deep or cohesive narrative surrounding werewolf lore, nor if you’re looking for a genuine horror, gory action.

This book started off as a pretty good werewolf story. Then it bogged down into a lot of Indian/native American/First Nation magic, medicine, spiritualism pagan gobbledegoop.

I've loved reading Werewolf stories on my holidays since the heyday of Fear magazine 35 years ago, so this was a perfect quick read for me. There are more, and much more in-depth, descriptions of the weaponry than there are of the people in this book, but if you can get past that, and the fact its main purpose is to set up a series, then it's a fun little story with evil monsters, gore aplenty and out-of-their-depth cops being helped out by First Nation mysticism.
