It's weird that this feels like a prequel, but the kind where you're not supposed to read it out of the original publication order, because the "backstory" is meant to fill in the little snippets of the past that you'd wondered about while reading the main story. (Something I would argue about a series like Narnia, for similar reasons!)

I did like this volume; I was kind of surprised that all the pining was gone and they're just solidly in a mutual relationship now, because I hadn't remembered the first volume ending on such a settled note. The main issue in this one is that while Chiaki is building his future around Kazuma, fully intending to plan his school and everything else around his boyfriend, that's a term Kazuma still won't let him use in public, or even with their family and friends.

Their relationship stays secret from their families for two years. I did like the time jump, and the sense that they've really anchored in their love for each other. Plus we get to see things like Kazuma playing soccer again (not on an official team, but still pursuing something he enjoys), and meeting and getting advice from an openly gay guy who'd lost opportunities because of his sexuality, but had grown up happy and confident.

But there were a lot of very obvious Easter eggs that it's clear original readers were supposed to understand. Like the extremely random reveal that Kazuma is an amazing artist - something that is never hinted at in the course of these two volumes? I assume in the original story where they're an established couple and working adults, Kazuma is probably an artist. And there are all these little scenes with Tomoe, who still doesn't make a whole lot of sense in their lives...

But I read the synopsis of the original story, and the kid they end up adopting is hers. So she just sort of got shoe-horned into their backstory? As this free spirit "amazing" character whom I'd thought had been getting set up for a post-graduation relationship with the kind teacher, but who's jetting off to other countries instead.

I feel like I might be more attached to the backstory after reading the main "future" one, so if Sublime licenses and publishes that one as well, I'll revisit and see if I feel differently. It's an interesting storyline that has some good bones but feels weirdly paced and kind of scattered.

Super disappointing, honestly, that the "hey we're dating" reveal to their parents is one page right at the end and isn't actually shown. I get the sense from these volumes that Kazuma's family would be supportive, but Chiaki's mother hit him in the face for daring to make his own plans about college and his future, so...not showing how she reacts to him dating his male childhood best friend feels like a pretty huge story gap.

It's hard to tell if this series will be ongoing or is ending here, but things do seem to be looking up. There are some hints of Tomoe being close to their teacher as well, or wanting to be perhaps as she seems to at least have a friendly if not more open relationship with him than most students traditionally do with their teachers. All three of them are taking steps towards their new futures after graduating high school, and seem to have each at least found peace if not some form of happiness in their new goals and outlooks. Kazuma especially is surprising in this volume as he steps up on several occasions, even to Chiaki's surprise. At least if the series does end here, it will end on a positive note with some good optimism for their futures.

I really love the way that Chiaki and Kazuma navigated their relationship throughout this volume, since they had to handle the pressure of what happens after high school along with the reality that their love isn’t always accepted. The way that they communicated was a bit messy but adorable all the same, since they did manage to communicate and not have many misunderstandings. I also really enjoyed seeing how both interacted with their friend: Tomoe, along with other more minor characters.
Overall, I really hope that more of Tomo Kurahashi’s work gets licensed by SuBLime.

This prequel series is really cute. In this volume, Chiaki and Kazuma are officially in a relationship and things get rather spicy as they take things to the next level. Kazuma deals with some insecurities around being in a same-sex relationship and some guilt over not being open with friends and family about the relationship. There's also some stress over what their future might look like together. The two are really very sweet together though and try to figure out how to deal with these things together. I've really enjoyed this series.

I enjoyed this quite a bit more than the first volume (largely because they were a bit older). I'm still conflicted on how I feel about the explicitness based on their ages, but I truly love everything else about this manga. Both MCs are likable and fleshed-out, and their relationship is really wonderful. It's the perfect amount of angsty, fluffy, and cute, and I overall really enjoyed this series.

They're SO cute and wholesome. I loved the discussion about acceptance and how they discussed their futures together. Reading this just made me feel happy. I need to reread Let's Be a Family. I need MORE.

Less appealing than Vol. 1, but nevertheless a worthy entry in the series, this is essentially a continuation of an infatuation between two school-age boys in Japan. Well written and illustrated (explicitly in places).
