When one of his colleagues witnesses a robbery in which one of the participants, a child, bears a striking resemblance to a certain Bow Street Runner, John Pickett realizes he has a young half-brother who has been “apprenticed” to a criminal gang. The brutal murder of the pursuing constable makes the crime far more serious than a simple robbery would be—and ten-year-old Kit is linked to the crime by the toy soldier he dropped while fleeing the scene.
In spite of his tender years, he will certainly hang unless Pickett can extricate him before fellow Bow Street Runner Maxwell solves the case. For the first time in his career, Pickett is obliged to work against one of his fellows, dogging Maxwell’s steps and trying to anticipate his next move in order to get to the boy first.
Pickett’s investigation will take him back to the rookeries of London where his own childhood was spent. But can he return to his old haunts without being pulled back into his old way of life?
This story, #10 in the John Pickett mystery series, is not exactly a mystery. It is a crime story, but, since we know from the get-go who the baddies are and what their evil plans are, it's not exactly mysterious. What it is, though, is a good human interest tale. We delve more into the personal side of John's life and watch his uneasy return to his roots, which results in some disconcerting events in his life and some uncertainty on the reader's part about how exactly this will all impact his future.
At the beginning of the story, robbers fleeing the scene of their crime are almost stopped by the police, resulting in the death of the police officer involved and the discovery that one of the criminals is a young boy closely resembling John Pickett. Robert Maxwell, the Bow Street runner assigned to hunting down these criminals, former soldier and by-the-book investigator, suspects the boy is John's illegitimate son, never mind the fact that John would have had to father this boy when he was just a boy himself. John, of course, knows better. This must be a half brother his father left behind when sent off to Botany Bay.
Problem is that Runner Maxwell is hot on the trail of the two adults and the young boy, fully intending to throw the book at all of them when they are caught, which would result in either the hanging of all three or their being sent off to Australia. John cannot conceive of that fate for his own brother, even though it's a brother he was unaware he had until this moment.
So the story involves John and Maxwell working separately to find the criminals, Maxwell to apprehend all three and John with the hope of rescuing his brother to give him a respectable life in Mayfair with himself and Julia. But going back to the place of your youth, in this case the rookeries of St. Giles, can be a dangerous thing. Will John's right-wrong lines become blurred as he becomes more and more immersed in the environs of his criminal childhood?
There are some very touching moments in this story, regarding John and brother Kit's budding relationship, his longstanding relationship with Magistrate Colquhoun, and, of course, his new life as a happily-married man. Those are the best parts of the novel.
Some of John's actions in his desperation to save his brother seemed somewhat unreasoned and poorly thought out, or at least inefficient and ineffectual, to me. And he seemed to develop a bit of a martyr attitude at what the outcome would be, but the story still interested me quite a bit and some of it moved me. I've had a soft spot for John Pickett for years now. Not exactly a crush, more of a deep, (grand)motherly affection.
Series: John Pickett #10 Publication Date: 6/12/20
OMGoodness! This series just keeps getting better and better with each new book! This is absolutely the best John Pickett yet – and we meet a great new character in John’s young half-brother, Kit. The story is compelling on so many levels – the crime was suspenseful, the budding relationship between John and Kit was poignant and sweet, and John’s uncertainty about his future was a hand-wringer.
Robert Maxwell is a fairly new, very good, and very determined member of the Bow Street team. As a former military man, he tends to see things in black-and-white, and when he witnesses a crime that includes a murder he is determined to find the perpetrator. Strange that the boy who was with them looked just like John Pickett. Too bad if he’s related to Pickett because he will swing right along with the men who were with him. All Maxwell has to do is find him.
As soon as John arrives at work, Magistrate Colquhoun calls him into his office. He warns John about the boy Maxwell is looking for – and quietly hints that John might want to find and extract the boy before Maxwell finds and arrests him.
The search is on and the excitement doesn’t let up from the first page to the last. Can you imagine sweet, good, decent, John robbing the Bank of England? Well – get prepared. We see sides of both John and Julia that we always suspected were there, but perhaps we hadn’t actually seen. The love between John and Julia is palpable and it expands to encompass all who are near and dear to them.
I loved meeting Kit and learning his story, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens with him in the future. Also, I can hardly wait for the birth of John and Julia’s baby – and to see where their future takes them.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It was wonderful to interact with John and Julia again. Lately I have read quite a few less then memorable books. This most definitely is not one of them. 'Brother' catches the reader up on so many things from John's past, incidents that had been mentioned that I had forgotten. It was wonderful. Then it flings open a door to an entirely new John Pickett Mysteries series. And of course, there is Kit. Some scenes are heart-wrenching, so painful to read that it brings tears, and I almost had to shut the book. Almost. A few deep breaths later, and I continued. The love John and Julia have for each other, the yet to be born baby, and now Kit is enviable. As big as this book is, it flows beautifully and was a fast read. Sheri's prose is smooth as silk. It catches and carries the reader to the very end. Her research is thorough. I highly recommend 'Brother, Can You Spare a Crime?'
This latest John Pickett mystery is perhaps my favorite. This story takes an unexpected turn when John learns that he has a young brother, Kit, who has been abandoned and ill used. John and his wife, Julia, must deal with this and make decisions in how to adjust their lives to include this young boy while also expecting the arrival of their own child in the near future. All of this as John is considering leaving police work which has been shown to bring an element of danger to his family. Although the family element and the relationship of John and Julia has always been a large component of this series, this one brings this to a new level.
Regency England. A Pub in the Strand. Sheri Cobb South’s Brother, Can You Spare a Crime? (John Pickett, #10) finds a new member of Bow Street in a position to observe three ‘criminals’ as they escape from the building which they attempted to rob. Robert Maxwell, a former soldier wounded in the leg by ‘a French ball’, observes 3 potential criminals being chased by the night watchmen from a bank these 3 people were trying to rob. Robert Maxwell, now a member of Bow Street, returns to the office to give details of the 3 people he saw running from the bank to his supervisor, Patrick Colquhoun. Yes, the same mentor of John Pickett! Maxwell outlined whom he saw, and the fact that one of these pursued people dropped something. He hands a metal toy soldier to Mr. Colquhoun and tells him that a youth about 12 or 13 years old was the one who dropped the toy soldier, but Maxwell does not stop discussing this ‘youth’. Exasperated Mr. Colquhoun finally says, “What of him?….What of it?” Maxwell states, “He looked just like Mr. Pickett.” who is another Bow Street Runner! The author handles beautifully all the questions if John Pickett has a son or half-brother who is being used by these criminals. This installment to this series is excellent! All loose ends are neatly tied together. Very enjoyable! Highly recommended! 4.5 stars.
What's a respectable brother to do when his younger sibling has been taken over by a ruthless bank robber and become involved in a capital crime? Bow Street Runner John Pickett will sacrifice his life with former society matron Julia and their unborn child to rescue his half-brother Kit from degradation and possibly the gallows, and free the boy from the misery that's all he's known since childhood.
In this installment of the John Pickett mysteries, we get a deeper insight into John's past, while enjoying the backdrop of Georgian London and the deep divide between the rich and poor. Ms. Cobb South delighted me with the tension as John sought to find Kit and wrest him from the evil man who bought him from his gin-soaked mother. You don't have to be familiar with the others in the series. to be drawn into this tightly woven plot and its finely crawn characters.
The best John Pickett yet!
I received a free copy of this audiobook and am leaving an honest, voluntary review.
Enjoyed this installment in the life of John Pickett. He is such a great character, so easy to like. Here he finds out he has a half brother, one who has been drawn into some dangerous, shady dealings. John must try to extradite Kit (Christopher) before Bow Street arrests him.
I must say I am wondering a bit about the direction Cobb seems to be taking John, away from Bow Street. I am certainly glad he did not get hired as a bank clerk! I guess time will tell.
I was a fan of the Pickett series but this one was dull, the plot was weak, the storyline unbelievable, and the dialog boring. This is the last Pickett for me.
This is the best book I've read this year. They should be read in order, because they build on each other. John Pickett, during a bank robbery, finds out that he has a half-brother. This child is being used as a means to access small spaces and enter businesses for theft. Mr. Colquhoun, John's magistrate boss, tells John that he will give Mr. Maxwell the job of investigating the bank robbery, but John should shadow the investigation to snag his brother before the law arrests all of the miscreants. All of the robbers will hang because someone has been killed in the execution of the crime. This is a very different story because John has to infiltrate the robbers to save his brother. Unfortunately, they know precisely who John Pickett is and want to murder him. John gets around that by suggesting a bigger heist, stealing gold from the Bank of England. This is a rousing tale that is amazing. I loved it.

( Format : Audiobook ) " Easy not to think of money when you have plenty" Book 10 in the ongoing John Pickett series and still the tale of romance between two widely differing classes in English Regency society has still not lost any of it's charm. This delightful and well written murder mystery continues with the juggling of niceties of a bygone era, again deliciously narrated by Joel Froomkin,. His reading is well paced and articulated and suitably English accented, everything delivered with the lightest of touches, emphasising the comedic content but never simply playing it for laughs.
This time, Brother Can You Spare a Crime? takes the reader deeper into the darker areas of John Pickett's earlier life and the more sordid side of old London. In part an historic comedy of manners, part blighted romance, all wrapped into a really good story of robbery, murder and intrigue, delivered with realistic characters and an above average narration, this is a book to be enjoyed by everyone with a delight in crime thrillers. My thanks to the rights holder not only for freely gifting me a complementary copy, via Audiobook Boom, but also, in so doing, continuing my association with the John Pickett series.
Oh my goodness, this book was so hard to put down! I have listened to many of the books in this series but this one by far was more intense and, yes, was a true nail-biter. In book 10, John and Julia are newly married and expecting when he finds out that he has a 10 year old half brother that is with a scary and very dangerous couple of bank robbers. John now must rescue him before he is caught and sentenced to hang with the men he knows is controlling the boy. John finds himself back in the Rookery and other filthy and dodgy places of his past. Most of these books have been really clean and closer to the PG side of the ratings, however with the people and areas John is thrown into this book really pushed it into the PG13 side. The language is still pretty clean but there is more violence and sexual content, no actual scenes but illusions are stronger (ex. in one part he is in a brothel and the thin walls allow him to hear and picture exactly what is taking place in the other room). As a parent I would be fine with high school and up for this one. The narrator is absolutely perfect and truly makes this an incredible audio book!
—I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
At #10 in the John Pickett series, the story is still engaging and fresh. This time John found his young brother Kit and boy oh boy, so much fun!
My fear though is that Sheri will end the series with the baby being born and that's that. That would be so disappointing though because I'd really love to see John as a father in a few more books -I am allowed to dream, yes?
And oh yes, more about Kit -off to school, coming home for the holidays, John's new 'business' taking off, or not. A reunion with JP senior -Gosh what that would be like for Kit and John Jr.? -and me of course, 'yip yip'.
Sheri thank you for such amazing stories. They bring endless joy. Looking forward to much, much more.
cosy-mystery, British, law-enforcement, London, mystery, class-consciousness***** John Pickett is a Bow Street Runner who investigated the death of the (unlamented) husband of Lady Julia and saved her from the noose. Now they are married and John is involved in a case where one of the miscreants turns out to be his ten year old half brother previously unknown to him requiring him to go undercover in the Rookeries and other unsavory (but familiar) parts of London. Each time I read one of this series I swear that it is the best! It is a very British mystery with sly humor. Joel Froomkin is so very talented with the way that he is able to differentiate the characters and he did a great job with the accents. I won the audio in a giveaway. Yay me!
Sheri Cobb South just keeps amazing me. I have loved this series from the beginning and with each new book, I am more enthralled. This is book number 10 and in many series, you will see a kind of a repeat of the same story. Well, that is not true for the John Pickett series! I love the addition of John's half-brother Kit and I look forward to many adventures between the brothers too. Can't wait for book number 11. Oh, and I can't forget the wonderful voice of Joel L. Froomkin who is the narrator for this series. Joel's voice is just perfect for this series and adds just that extra something to the enjoyment of the book. Well done!
I began reading the John Picket series while recuperating from hip replacement surgery. I loved escaping to 19th century England! The first novella was so entertaining, I had to continue following the story line. Intrigue, murder, romance, and excitement, this series has it all. The latest book( and hopefully not the last - we must continue onward to the upcoming blessed event!) is outstanding and has a Dickens flavor to it. Please, please continue with this series!!
In this installment of the series, we meet John's younger half-brother, Kit. This story is more of an advventure rather than a myster, whch is rather disappointing. I enjoyed the mystery element of previous stories. We do see John and Julia's relationship progressing, however, as they are expecting a child and John is considering leaving the Runners. As usual, the author creates a believable picture of Georgian England, which is always a plus.
The narrator's voice goes well with the story -- also a plus.
I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Love this series. John and Julia continue to grow and now a new Pickett is introduced, Christopher or Kit. While John works to find his half-brother and find a way to protect Julia and their soon to be child, he contemplates taking a job as a clerk. His detective work leaves him following another Bow Street Runner to try and find his elusive half-brother and protect the ten year old he has never known about. Best book yet. Cannot wait for the next one.
This wonderful series just gets better and better with the depth of characterisation for the whole cast and a superb overview of Regency London, from the poorest slums to the grand squares of Mayfair. It was a sheer delight to get properly acquainted with Kit (who we bumped into briefly earlier on in the series), with the emotionally engaging twists and turns of the plot making exciting and moving reading. I can't wait to read the next one!
I can't tell you how much I love John Pickett and Julia. They make the best couple. John really gets himself in a bind in this book. Plus he meets a half brother he didn't know he had. Great characters, always a great mystery to figure out. I hope this series never ends. Thanks for such good books Mrs South
If you have reached this point in the series, you already know know what to expect. But somehow, this one is even better than the others. It's not often that a mature series continues its high quality. But Ms Cobb South has done it.
Another outstanding entry in this wonderful series! I love John and Julia as well as all the supporting characters. I do hope there will be more books in this series. Joel L. Froomkin’s narration is 5-stars all by itself!
These are easy to read, they're humorous, light-hearted, intriguing, and sweetly romantic. I love the writing style of the author and I love how quickly I can get through these highly entertaining stories!
Love this series. John and Julia are great. This book was a bit different. John and Julia are separated for most of the story. I like the introduction of Kit. There was not so much of a mystery in this one. More of a race to get Kit before an arrest is made.
Beautifully written, with a great sense of place and time. The tension builds as Pickett’s personal quest brings him into conflict with a colleague’s case. The resolution is a gray area, but our hero lives to fight crime another day.
