After returning home to the Florida Keys, Jesse moves on to Fort Myers, his hometown on the Southwest Florida coast. There is much work to be done and Jesse is no stranger to hard work. On a kayaking adventure with friends, Jesse's daughter finds and rescues a baby manatee suffering from respiratory problems. The red tide has returned and fish are dying by the thousands, along with dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and sea birds. The algal bloom is a naturally occurring phenomenon, but this time it's much worse. Theories abound; it's something left over from the previous spring's coronavirus outbreak, it's caused by pollution, someone is intentionally creating a super-algae. But there's something far more sinister going on among the Ten Thousand Islands, and it's up to Jesse to find out where the bodies are buried.
I'm a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and now, a full time novelist. Between those careers, I've also worked as a deckhand, commercial fisherman, divemaster, taxi driver, construction manager, and truck driver. I live in the Sea Islands, near Beaufort, SC, with my wife and youngest daughter. We also have three grown children, five grand children, three dogs and a whole flock of parakeets. I grew up in Melbourne, FL and have also lived in the Florida Keys and Cozumel, MX.
Jesse returns to his island after his last adventure.
While on a kayaking trip, he finds a baby manatee in some distress. There's a monster Red Tide. It doesn't seem to be natural. Somebody is causing it, and Jesse is determined to find the malefactor.
Okay. More of a plot than in several of the books in this series.
Another great story by Wayne. I have read everyone of his books, Charity Styles included. This book doesn't have as much action as I'd like, but still a great story. I highly recommend Wayne Stinnett & All his work.
121 page's of Stephen King setup that was painful obvious where the plot was going. When it finally happened it was unsatisfactory. Wayne can write details of a summer day, Wind, tide, animals and plant farts. Yet seems to skip, or miss plot points, Setup way before, then tack's them on as a after thought. This whole mission was wild west, and not at all how a man with his background and support would do thing's. It wasn't clever enough, nor careful in anyway. Pure Author setup due to boredom and speed.
Less of the family bull, enough already! I read for the adventure not the constant love drama of Jesse. Jack Armstrong and the huge company you have hardly plundered. 6 books and you have wasted ever chance, for Jesse to sail, shag, age, and family drama. With a mission tacked on... He talks about the early days of he love for the island, bunk house for the men... Yeah l miss those days as well mate. Jesse's isn't getting any younger, nor am l, or you actually. Filler for the environment, and skipping out on the action and plan. Far to much repeat information as well. If you are reading book 18 before 8, then sod you. So cut the deep dive backwards, however Bill the SAC Got no such treatment ffs, it was what 9 books ago? The books are getting sloppy, and really not going far enough in Jack's world yet he was supposed to be this rising Star. No, no he hasn't not even close. Sniper skills are lost not gained and kept. Yet he never trains yet cuts ropes. Books are becoming holiday trash book's, your losing whatever you had.
I'm still of the opinion that the last few Jesse novels just weren't as good as the first ones. There is just something missing. Like in this one, the whole take down of the bad guys felt completely flat and rushed. And what happened with the senator and his sidekick? Or is that another book? The last quarter of the book felt completely rushed...
Great story but just way too short. I have given most all of the other Mc Dermitt books 5 stars but can't with this one. After the great build up and detailed backstory, the capture was anticlimactic and left too many questions: what happened to the family, organization and senator?
I didn't enjoy this McDermitt adventure as much as I have some of the previous. I found it boring, actually. Stinnett keeps trying to reinvent the main character. Sometimes it's a hit, other times he whiffs.
I absolutely love these books, the characters are like old friends or family & the rhythm of the story is always at the top of it’s game. Most stories have peaks & valleys, but not from Mr. Stinnett. His stories you crawl up the ledge & ride high. There are still peaks, but you don’t have to go to the valley floor before you start climbing again. I can’t wait to see what is next for Jesse, Savannah & the rest of the clan. My one request is for more boat action! I can’t wait to read about Gaspar’s Revenge with a fresh refit slamming through the seas or more about Mr. Armstrong’s flashy machine.
This whole thing started with a loner, recently retired Marine with the plan & intention to be a hermit for the rest of his life. Now, 18 books later (hopefully many more to come), he consciously still strives for relative solitude, but subconsciously revels in his reunited/growing family & friends who would lay everything down for each other.
Mr. Stinnett, you are by far my favorite author. I like it even more that you’re also a low country Carolina boy like me. I get down in the Ace Basin to fish or just unplug & I’ve swung through Lady Island Marina a few times to refill & grab a drink at Dockside or the Fillin’ Station. I’ve asked twice if you were hanging around nearby because I’d be honored to buy you a drink. I was told both times you were away or keeping your head down. They may have just been saying it to keep you incognito which is understandable so I never pushed. In the humble opinion of this good ole country boy, your books are solid gold & I love the other authors who have popped up in your wake with casual cameos from one of your characters in their books. It’s great.
With roots in a true life series of murders, Stinnett has once again put his primary hero, Jesse McDermott into an interlocking set of adventures that make for a delightful read. The only reason I didn't polish it off in one sitting is that I started it late at night!
Since this is number 18 of his McDermitt books, a lot of things have already happened. His primary vehicle, the Gaspar's Revenge, has been blown up and then reborn, with special weaponry befitting a former Marine sniper, former Homeland Security contractor and rock-solid, I will see justice done guy. His friends and families are in place and we'll developed, and he's been living with his long time love and their daughter for months. Stinnett has built that world well - and as a long time reader I have all the backstory behind me.
The only question is, will someone new to this world fall in love with it without the background? The pace of the story telling and the plot twists and turns suggests to me they will.
2020 will end with #19; one good reason to look forward to it ( beyond all the nonsense to date )!
I really enjoy reading your works and I am looking forward to your next book. I do have a suggestion about something that makes me stumble every time I come across it. I am a firm believer in the use of the rifle whenever possible but I am quite comfortable with the use of the pistol. As a law enforcement officer with the previous Dept of Justice , INS, we used revolvers in the .357 magnum and later expanded to the use of semi auto pistols up to the .45 caliber. We qualified up to a range of 50 yards with many of us getting perfect scores. That's 150 feet with barrels from 2 inches to 4 inches. Pistols are very accurate in the right hands and I think Jesse can do better with a pistol than is written. Excellent books and I am a fan. I should be releasing my first ebook from my Desert Series soon and in it Hector is very sensitive about his pistol shooting.
Fantastic! And Jesse gets his happily ever after. This was the best. Set in an area of SW Florida I know well. Well, not the back country of the Ten Thousand Islands but Fort Myers, Naples, and Marco Island. The mystery was different and I truly enjoyed the environmental aspect of it. Red tide is something Floridians live with year round. Algae blooms are commonplace. The changes in SWFL over the last 25 years are astounding. The amount of building and people moving here are unbelievable. It has led to a lot of the environmental changes we see everyday. Weather patterns have changed in just these 25 years. I think the story speaks directly to the changes in the environment and indirectly to the growth and what has happened in SWFL. I look forward to the next chapter in the Jesse saga!
“Rising Warrior” is another great book by Wayne Stinnett. I read it in one day as the story was a little short this time. I think you will appreciate his books more if you start from the first one, as the series is about the life and friends of Jesse McDermitt, a former marine, with awesome intelligence and skills. Some of Jesse’s gang and a new boyfriend of Flo, his daughter, solve a mission that involves an environmental disaster, in the Everglades, laced with inbred villains. As usual, the story is fast-paced, with lots of danger, boat chases and gunfights and is based on the story of a past serial killer. I would recommend anyone who likes action and adventure to read all of Wayne Stinnett’s books about Jesse McDermitt in his Caribbean mysteries.
While I always enjoy Jesse’s next adventure, I’m afraid that this left me feeling like I had not read the next book in an exciting series. While I appreciate the character development of Savannah and Flo, it was more of a romantic story than action adventure until nearly the end and that was a bit anticlimactic. Mr. Stinnet’s books are always a quick read; mostly because I can’t put them down and also the limited size. This one was completely put downable and it took me longer to finish than any of the others, But I keep ordering and reading and will continue to do so unless the next one falls into the same rather complacent category.
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book . It was filled with family love ,terrific brotherhood storyline of just how true friends watch each other’s backs, adventure like a redneck reunion ,and just enough of a hint there’s LOTS more to come and enjoy . You’ve done it again and I always think it can’t get any better and you’ve proven me wrong each and every book thank you for making a boring Tuesday terrific.
Wayne has done it again. This time in the Fort Meyers area of Florida and the Everglades. Fast paced and well written Jesse and the gang solve an environmental disaster in the making and put away some real bad actors. Gunfights, fist fights, boat chases , it’s all there. Oh yeah, love is in the air as well. Somebody might just be measuring Jesse’s windows for curtains.
Hardly never a dull moment... Well, there was that one time... Oh, wait, that was another book. You'll love this one. Ya know something's going down when the titanium gun mounts are brought out! And Billy brings TW0 trucks! And the rising warrior? Yep! Needs no coaching! Catches on fast. I am a little worried though - one of the bad guys is still out there. Get him, Jesse! Just like old times.
Jessie married ?? For the third and last time...she is the perfect choice !!
Wayne reminds me of a bottle of fine wine, my wife Donna and I love Cab/franc...the older he gets, The better his stories are, I have really enjoyed all of the Jessie/Charity Styles books that I have read. And this one is equal to all of the previous books, Read it in 4 Hours...GREAT READ !!!
Wayne has done it again...another book that the reader is unable to put down. I read it in one sitting, reading and turning pages as fast as I could. Unusual story line, some strange characters ( that you get to dispose pretty quickly) and some twists and turns that lead to an interesting conclusion. I highly recommended this book!
Having read all of Wayne Stinnett's books, looked forward to the release of this one. Was not disappointed!! Another great read in this on going series. Stinnett does a great job of creating a written environment in which the reader becomes an integral part of the lives of the various characters. Well done, Wayne!
I’m thankful for the day that I read the first Jesse McDermitt novel. I’ve since read each and every one including the Charity books. This one is great. Plenty of action and the good guys always win. I can’t wait for December and the next installment. Keep ‘em coming!
This Jesse McDermott book is based on a true Florida serial killer, and has somewhat cruder antagonists than previous books. Both of these things influenced me to rate it four stars. It is a personal opinion. The last half of the book is more like previous books.
As with all of Wayne Stinnett’s books, I start out promising myself that I will sedately read the newest book, savoring each word, but within 5 minutes, I am rapidly turning pages as I devour the story. Then, when I actually finish the book, I say to myself, “Well, damn, now I have to wait MONTHS for the next book!”
It never ceases to amaze me, the new plot and storylines Mr. Stinnet develops. This one, albeit not the most action packed, is certainly one of the Best. Interesting, new, exciting family development and characters intertwined with terrific historic and geographic Florida information. Needless to say I loved it, and look forward to many more!
A great read with the continuation of the story lines and adding few new characters to fill out the island.
Never ending action, mean that in a good way, and the conclusions come on quickly in the last few chapters. This provides a great segway into further adventures around the southern west coast of Florida.
I discovered this series when Chris Niles thanked the writer in her first book. I soon found myself deep into reading them in order and anxiously awaiting the next.
This is one of my favorites series set in South Florida.
And my thanks to Mr. Stinnett for not being politically correct.
Jesse with his pack of friends we've gotten to know throughout his past adventures get together for another interesting story. Nice to see him settling in with Savannah & Flo & her boyfriend David. Murders from the past are woven into this book that's hard to put down.
This started out to be such a good story, but ended up being boring. I love all of Wayne's stories up to this one, and just didn't feel Rising Warrior was on par. Too slow, too much minutiae, and definitely not enough of the action we have come to love from Jesse. Hoping he can get back in the groove for the next ones.
Not the best book in the series. I felt like the author was told to write another book to fulfill a contract, but he really did not want to write one. Lackluster with a poorly constructed plot plus it was just too short of action. This book missed on so many levels. Perhaps the author needs to move on to a new series with new characters.
Not only does Jesse get the crew back together to clean up a bunch of drug smugglers, but he also finds the source of an algae bloom that is a danger to marine mammals and fish.
Anxiously awaiting the next book! I love each and every book by Wayne Stinnett!
Jesse along with family and friends never disappoint! Great plot, just wish I didn't read so fast cause now I am waiting not so patiently for December 31!
8 months touring the Caribbean was enough quiet for Jesse, LOL. I’m sure glad he is back and had some friends along for the adventure. Always a great entertaining read.
