Steve O'Dell loves to write and does it well. But as an eighth-grade student at Needham Middle School, his talent sometimes seems more an embarassment than a blessing.
Then, on Veterans Day 2001, Steve’s award-winning essay propels him into an adventure twisting through Revolutionary battles and bloodshed. Thanks to the bizarre bequest of a manuscript and a musket ball from a long-lost family war hero, Steve’s journey with the Revolutionary War hero Dr. Joseph Warren begins.
A time-traveling talisman missing from the archives of one of Boston’s oldest historical societies takes Steve through portals of history, where he walks side by side with a real Boston patriot. He makes house calls with Dr. Warren on March 5, 1770 and stumbles onto the bloodstained streets of the Boston Massacre. From the killings of March 5, to boarding tea ships in 1773, Steve’s history book explodes to life as he helps Dr. Warren and forges a friendship with Boston’s True Patriot. Steve watches Dr. Warren launch Paul Revere on his midnight ride, and he helps Dr. Warren dodge British musket balls in the first battles of the War for Independence. With each adventure, Steve tastes the light that ignites The Revolution.
Steve will eventually convince others that the Revolutionary relic he was given really does open portals through time, but he faces his most difficult quest alone—saving Dr. Warren from the onslaught at Bunker Hill. Can he do it? And if he fails, will he ever return to this century?
Saving Dr. Warren...A True Patriot rips through the pages of history. From the Revolutionary War to the vanishing veterans of World War II, to the ashes of September 11, 2001, Saving Dr. Warren demonstrates to both old and young that patriotism, standing like an old oak tree on a grandfather’s farm, has and will endure.

Within these pages are resources that junior high school teachers can use to help their class explore the impact of September 11th, World War II and the beginnings of the American Revolution.
Through historical fiction, the author is able to provide young readers a perspective on what it would be like to experience 9-11 and the War on Terror as a middle school student, allowing history to come alive.
Combat stories as told by a United States Marine and Medal of Honor recipient give middle school teachers the opportunity to share with students the Battle of Okinawa and impress upon them the sacrifices made for freedom. The importance of Veterans Day is also impressed upon Steve, the teenage protagonist, as he learns about his great uncle’s experience as a World War II Marine.
Finally, Steve’s experiences with Dr. Joseph Warren will propel middle school readers into the beginnings of the American Revolution. A Patriotic Review The year is 2001. Steve O’Dell is just an ordinary American boy, living in the aftermath of the great tragedy that struck on September 11. Joseph Warren is a forgotten Founding Father, who lived over 200 years prior to Steve’s existence. Steve enters an essay contest about patriotism and finds himself winning first place. Steve is not a patriot, he is just the winner of an essay contest that just happened to be about Patriotism. Steve is not a hero, he is just a normal boy getting too much credit for what he has done. Dr. Warren, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. He is a true patriot but gets little to no credit in Steve’s time. This man died for the independence of his country, yet he was forgotten. When Steve goes back in time and winds up in the revolutionary war era, he finds himself as Dr. Warren’s apprentice. There, Steve learns the true meaning of patriotism. Saving Dr. Warren… “A True Patriot” is a fast-paced, beautiful story that shows the seeds planted on American soil. It is a tale of one of the most important leaders of the American revolution, whom we as a society have chosen to leave in the dark. In life, there are two types of people: the ones who work hard and get no credit, and those who do absolutely nothing and achieve so much more. This self-published book is a perfect example of Steve’s journey to go from the second person to the first. Saving Dr. Warren is a page-turner that teaches readers the importance of sacrifice. It was a good mixture from a teen coming of age, and a historical work. Reading Dr. Warren gave me a newfound love of historical fiction, and helped me to be a little more patriotic myself. Overall, this is a very “Goodread”, and I would definitely recommend this book!
The book Saving Doctor Warren, a True Patriot by Jeffrey J. McKenna is a great book for people looking to be entertained while reading about some of America’s history. This historical fiction book is set in 2001, a month after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, following a normal middle school boy. Read this story to find out how this boy time travelled to the American Revolution to meet Dr. Warren, someone who was very patriotic and learns what patriotism really means.
It starts off when the main character, Steve O’Dell, goes to school one day and there is an essay contest on patriotism taking place. After the 9/11 attacks this was very important to know what patriotism really was, so the best essay was awarded $500 from the mayor of their city, Needham. When Steve hears this, he begins to want the money. Everyone starts writing, all wanting the $500 reward and trying to be the most patriotic they can be. And eventually Steve becomes the winner.
He receives the reward and is crowned America’s Most Patriotic Student. But Steve didn’t want this. He only wrote what he thought the judges would like, not what he thought was patriotic. When he receives the reward he feels bad about it, and not deserving of it. Steve gets some attention from some news outlets, resulting in letters to him. Among these letters is one addressed directly to him and his family, from a colonel. He reads through the letter, and finds out that a Marine sergeant has asked for his presence on Veterans Day, so he could give Steve something special. It eventually turns out that this sergeant is an uncle the family never knew about.
They arrive there on Veterans Day, when Steve receives an old musket ball from his uncle. Later when Steve is at home, he is holding the musket ball and thinking about it, when his vision blurs and the musket ball gets warm. Before he knows it, he isn’t in his home anymore - he is in the 18th century, right in front of Dr. Warren.
This book is a great way to read about American history while also being entertained by a bit of fantasy thrown into it. I personally really enjoyed this book and thought all of the elements put into it were really interesting. I thought it was cool that it took place in 2001 but had time travel back to the 18th century, so it still had some modern day in it.
Despite being fictional it is very realistic besides the time travel, and contains things that actually happened in the American Revolution and in 2001, such as 9/11, the Boston Tea Party, and more. There is a part I don’t like about this book, and that is that it can be pretty confusing at certain times. But other than that it’s a very interesting and good book.
Dr. Warren The Forgotten Hero The book Saving Dr. Warren… A True Patriot by Jeffery McKenna, is a great read for young adults looking to learn more about their country’s history. This historical fiction book has a modern outlook on the American Revolution. Saving Dr. Warren . . . A True Patriot is a book written for middle school students and those that are teaching America's next generation. The book takes place after 9/11, but also takes us back in time to important events and battles during the mid-1700s that led our country to fight in the American Revolution. The main character, Steve O'Dell, is a gifted writer. He enters a writing contest about what it means to be a patriot. Steve uses his natural gift for writing and writes exactly what the judges want to hear in his essay, but he doesn’t actually have a real sense of patriotism. His award-winning essay ends up causing Steve to inherit a magic musket ball that causes him to travel back to Boston during the 1700s. When Steve goes back in time he becomes William Eustis, the apprentice of Dr. Joseph Warren. He experiences actual events that happened in history, like the Boston Tea Party and The Battle of Bunker Hill. After experiencing these things, Steve starts to develop a real sense of patriotism. He learns how important Warren was and how much he impacted the United States. Although many people have forgotten who he is and what he did for his country, Steve and his story help us remember Dr. Warren and what a great patriot he was. This book is an eye opener and I definitely recommend it to those who like reading about history. I like how the book is told from a couple different perspectives. This helps us see different views on events during the American Revolution. I also enjoyed reading from Steve’s perspective, since he is a boy the same age as me, we think a lot alike. Overall, this book was fascinating and I definitely recommend it.
Jeffery Mckenna’s Saving Dr. Warren… “A True Patriot” is a heartwarming historical fiction novel with short, exciting chapters and many twists and turns. It is the perfect book for anyone who loves history, adventure, time-traveling, and humor, and is a fairly easy, short read. It is 2001, and eighth grader Steve O’Dell and his friend Grace Levy participate in an essay competition for $500. The topic is about what patriotism means to them after 9/11. Not really thinking deep into the subject, writing expert Steve creates the perfect “patriotic” essay and turns it into the competition. After becoming famous for being “the most patriotic teenager in Needham” and getting a call from a long-lost great uncle, Steve receives a mysterious musket ball from the American Revolution, along with a poorly written manuscript and some other papers about a strange Dr. Warren. Steve then travels back in time and discovers Dr. Warren, an often forgotten patriot and leader from the American Revolution, and his view on patriotism, sacrifice, and life in America begins to change. I loved this book, and it truly has changed my view on patriotism. I believe this book is for everyone! It changes perspectives and time periods, so there is plenty of diversity in character and adventure. It has historical, nonfiction aspects, such as the Battle of Menotomy and the Boston Tea Party. Additionally, it has fictional characters and lots of fun humor and friendship that make it exciting. Personally, I am a fan of fiction novels and prefer to read books that are not historical fiction. However, this book was extremely entertaining and un-put-downable for me. It made me laugh, cry, and think more deeply about what patriotism means. I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a short yet exciting read.
Saving Dr. Warren…“A True Patriot,” is a book about heroism, patriotism, and remembrance for those who have and still are serving for our country. It is perfect for middle schoolers who want to learn more about America’s history. The main character in this story is Steve O’Dell. He is just a normal eighth grade boy at Needham Middle School, who loves to read and write. He enters an essay contest about patriotism after 9/11 and wins. This experience allows him to be connected with a long lost family member who gave him three mysterious objects: a musket ball, an old manuscript, and a newspaper. With no idea what to do, what these things mean, and with this newly found family member now dead, Steve is left clueless. In this book, Steve is led on a journey of solving this mystery and what these objects mean with the help of his friend Grace. He is learning, but what he doesn't expect is to be thrown head first into some of these events. With this new musket ball, Steve is taken on many different time travelling adventures into the past. With these new experiences, Steve also discovers about a distant relative of his, Dr. Joseph Warren. Joseph Warren is a very important founding father of America who is commonly forgotten. Steve becomes attached to Warren, and knows he must save him. At the beginning of reading this story, it seemed to be just another historical fiction book about the founding of America and patriotism. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself not being able to put it down. Some nights I was reading chapters more than what was required. I think that this not only has to do with the plot of the book, but the aspect of the reader being able to solve a mystery. Jeffrey McKenna gives subtle foreshadowing clues along the way that are so exciting to look back at once you figure out what's going on in the book. He did a great job in the layout of the book and the historically accurate parts about the true events made learning fun. Jeffrey McKenna thinks that the most important word in the english language is remember. He has succeeded in teaching the reader how important the word remember truly is. Saving Dr. Warren…“A True Patriot,” teaches whoever opens it’s pages that we should remember those who have sacrificed everything and preserve the spirit of America. As you read this book, you will be taken through a journey of learning what it means to be a patriot. You will learn so much about Warren along the way as Steve does. You will learn about those who sacrificed everything for this country. And you will learn that “If we fail to remember our heroes, they will disappear. They will vanish from history. By remembering our nation’s heroes and America’s Spirit, we can together live on” (McKenna). Throughout the entire book, Steve races through time trying to save Dr. Warren. But, it’s in the end where he discovers that truly saving him lies in remembering.
Saving Dr. Warren… A True Patriot is a true masterpiece!
Saving Dr. Warren… A True Patriot was written by Jeffery McKenna and is a good book for people who enjoy science fiction and historical nonfiction. This book is set in modern day and in the Revolutionary war and follows Steve O’Dell an 8th grader who comes into possession of a time traveling musket ball and as the story proceeds we start to understand that the purpose of the musket ball is different than what it seems.
In the beginning of the book we meet Steve O’Dell and his friend Grace Levy who is visiting the Adams Family farm a year after the story takes place. We learn that Steve has been to the 1770’s and that this musket ball is probably the cause of it. We also learn that Abigail Adams hung a portrait of Dr. Warren over the Adams’ fireplace and permitted no one to move it. Steve admits that Dr. Warren was a medic in the Revolutionary War over 200 years ago. Steve reminesses on his smile and his determination during the different revolutionary battles, which hints towards Steve traveling back into that time period. Steve was given this time traveling musket ball by his long lost uncle, Harold Keith Warren. The main theme of this book is the transition from Steve just being an American to actively wanting people who were like him to remember the people he met while on his expeditions, people like Dr. Warren. In his book, Jeffery McKenna indicates switching POVs with a musket graphic, which helps the reader understand the point of view of that character and overall organizes the book. He makes the chapter short and splits the book into five different parts which helps with the pacing of the book.
This book is an amazing attention getter because it has depth and some mystery. It really makes you feel like you should be more patriotic to your country rather than be some uninspiring book. I really enjoyed it and while historical fiction isn’t really my favorite, sci-fi helped spice it up for me and I thought it was very interesting. I liked that the first chapter took place a year in the future and introduced us to what happened at the end of the story in the beginning of it. “He felt the 1770s welcoming him, but when he opened his eyes … nothing. No bright light, no talismanic portal, nothing but the Adams’ home, still in April, 2002. The musket ball sat cold in his hand. Dang! Why wouldn’t it heat up? Why wouldn’t it turn on?” (McKenna 4). The first chapter feels like the readers are time-traveling instead of Steve. The pacing of the book makes it easy to pinpoint certain scenes and dialogue because the chapters are short. The short chapters also make it easy to have stopping points. After finishing the book it gave me a sense of acomplishment, because that is what good writing will make you feel.
A True Patriot In the book Saving Dr. Warren… True patriot by Jeff Mckenna. Steve, a middle school boy, is given a magical musket ball that makes Steve time travel back and forth between the Revolutionary war and his normal life. Set in Boston, Steve will meet Dr. Warren and will fight in the battles of the Revolutionary Wars. This novel is a great way to show true patriotism and the true meaning of America. I absolutely loved this book. From the characters, to the setting, to the plot this story is truly a masterpiece because of the point of views and characters. First, this novel shows how teenagers see history, very boring and bland. Always standing up to say the pledge at the beginning of the day, over and over again without meaning anything. Writing contests, just wanting the money and not truly looking at what the real meaning is. The novel tells the story so well because it made me, a teenager, realize how important it is to say the pledge and the meaning and pouring my heart into paper for the experience of it and not for the money. Books like this can make us rethink the meaning of “fighting for liberty and freedom”. This shows us that history is created by our actions and what we decide to do will create history. Set in Boston, Steve travels back in time by a magical musket ball given to him by his long lost great uncle. He first goes back in time to the Boston Massacre where he meets Dr. Warren, his relative from back then. Dr. Warren was a doctor who fought in the Revolutionary War and was a great and noble leader. Unfortunately many people don’t know his name to this day, but Steve believes his purpose for traveling back in time is to retell the stories of Warren and let people in his day never forget his courageous acts and what he did for this country. Steve goes to the Boston Tea Party next to then raid the ships and submerge the English’s tea. He then travels back in time to go to the Battle of Menotomy, the opening battle of the Revolutionary wars, and battles with his Brother and Dr. Warren. Steve finally travels to the battle of Bunker Hill where he sees the bloodiest battle ever. Steve had thought the reason he was traveling back in time was to save Dr. Warren, but really he was there to remember Warren and tell his story to the people in the future. I would definitely recommend this book to teens my age, 13 or above, because teens need to be reminded and taught the real importance about history and the actions that were so critical for history to be shaped. People can relate to Steve when he is lost and needs to ask questions because sometimes I would be reading this book and find myself asking the same questions in my head as Steve was in the book. The novel is an excellent eye opener for the world and kids like you and me.
If You Love the American Revolution, This Book is for You The novel Saving Dr. Warren… A True Patriot by Jeff Mckenna is a historical fictional novel that follows the adventures of a fourteen year old boy named Steve who travels back in time to the American Revolution where he participates in multiple significant historical events such as the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Bunker Hill. The story begins in October of 2001, just one month after the terrors of 9/11, and the patriotism in most American citizens has greatly increased. However, when the opportunity of winning five-hundred dollars from an essay contest on patriotism is presented to a young boy named Steve, he only cares about the money, not about being patriotic. Steve is confused on why he received these items and what their purpose is, but Sargent Warren never gets the chance to explain. Will Steve end up saving Dr. Warren, and will his views on patriotism change? Read the book to find out. I really enjoyed reading this book for a few reasons: it had a very interesting storyline, taught me a lot about the Revolutionary War, and it was overall a very entertaining read. In addition, I also really like how the story changed perspectives between characters because it helped me to better understand the different characters of the book and how they felt throughout the story. Learning How To Become A True Patriot The novel, Saving Dr. Warren… “A True Patriot” by Jeffery McKenna was an excellent historical fiction book that helped me to understand and broaden my knowledge of patriotism. Rewinding back in time, we meet Dr. Joseph Warren, one of leaders who helped different organizations in the early days of the American Revolution. The book leads up to Steve and his attempt of trying not to fail his new friend and saving him from dying at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Will Steve fail? Or will he succeed? Following Steve’s journey, McKenna wrote this book with many different perspectives, allowing it to be even more interesting to read. I recommend this book to people who love history and to the people who may not. As someone who isn't a big fan of history, this book was a perfect eye-opener for me because it showed the importance of patriotism and how we need to show more respect for the people who did so much for our country.

Patriotism Prevailing Saving Dr. Warren a True Patriot by Jeffery McKenna is a historical fiction book about 8th grader Steve O’Dell. Steve wins a local essay contest about patriotism. Soon, his long lost great uncle finds out and wants to meet him. He gives Steve a box of items that have been in his family line for generations. Steve doesn’t know what to do with any of it when he gets home. Everything changes when Steve touches the old musket ball. He suddenly time travels back to before the American Revolution. Things take a dark turn when Steve learns that Dr. Warren will die at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Steve is determined to preserve Dr. Warren’s life. He soon realizes that saving someone might not just be a life or death matter.
One of the reasons I love this book is because of the writing style. Mr. McKenna used amazing descriptions that made me feel like I was really a part of the story. I loved the way that the perspective changed from different characters so that we could understand all of them, instead of only Steve. My favorite part of the book was how everything came around a full circle and made sense. The book was a great take on what patriotism means in today's world. Not only is it serving your country, but it can also mean remembering and respecting those who fought for our freedom
Steve’s Story Steve O’Dell is an 8th grade student in 2002, right after the 9/11 attacks. He travels through time. On his adventures he serves as an apprentice to Dr. Joseph Warren and the two become extremely close. Dr. Warren was a well respected doctor and military leader during the Revolutionary War. Although he played just as much of a role in the war as people like Paul Revere, he is not as famous because he did not survive.
Steve enters an essay contest about patriotism. After he wins, he is given the title “most patriotic teen”. At first, he feels like he doesn’t deserve this. Then, he gets a letter inviting him to a ceremony for a long-lost family war hero, his great uncle, Lee Warren. At the ceremony, Lee Warren gives him an old leather satchel with a manuscript and magic musket ball in it. With the musket ball, Steve is able to travel back to the 1770’s and go on many adventures as Dr. Joseph Warren’s apprentice, William Eustis. Steve decides to try to save Dr. Warren. After he is unsuccessful, he decides to do everything he can to make sure Dr. Warren is not forgotten. After his adventures, Steve starts to feel like he is patriotic and no longer feels guilty for winning the contest.
Through the book, you learn what it means to be a true patriot and you are able to really connect with the characters. It teaches you the importance of remembering the sacrifices people make for our country. As you read, it feels like you are right there with Steve on his adventures. It is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about the Revolutionary War and the events leading up to it.
Why SDWATP is the greatest historical fiction book of all time Saving Dr. Warren… a True Patriot by Jeffrey McKenna was a fantastic book, Mckenna's interpretation of the revolutionary war was incredible. It is a perfect read for young teens interested in historical fiction and action. Saving Dr.Warren… a True Patriot by Jeffery Mckenna was a book based on quirky 8th grader Steve O'dell who got caught up in a time traveling society after winning an essay contest on patriotism. He time traveled to the American Revolution and met forgotten hero Dr .Joseph Warren. The young child faces fear, victory, and regret throughout the book. Jeffery Mckenna did a fantastic job of making the text relatable by putting in the character Grace. Grace was Steve’s crush who cared about him deeply who yes helped Steve on his time traveling journey, but more importantly helped show how awkward middle school crushes can be. "While writing this book my main focus was to entertain young readers while helping educators share America's history in a way that impacts their students and helps History come alive" (Mckenna). And Jefferey Mckenna did just that, he gave the experience of what it is like to time travel, but also educated me on the American Revolution at the same time. Mckenna did a wonderful job of not just bringing forgotten hero Dr.Warren to light, but showing us what future generations are capable of doing. From his english teachers class to the Boston Massacre this book was a wonderful and wild ride. For the price of 18.99 you can immerse yourself in the 1700s. Jefferey Mckenna is a very charitable person and has partnered with a non profit organization called Help Patriotism Prevail giving schools class sets for free. In the end I rate this book a wonderful 10/10.

Saving Dr Warren, a True Patriot by Jeff McKenna is a perfect book for young teens. Not only is it enjoyable, but it also teaches the reader about the Revolutionary War and patriotism. Steve Odell, the main character in the book, enters an essay contest about patriotism after 9/11. But when he wins the contest he feels guilty because the winner of the contest is considered ‘The most Patriotic Teenager’. Steve feels as if he doesn’t deserve this title at all.
After winning the contest Steve gets lots of presents, including a musket ball and old manuscript. One day the musket ball let Steve travel back in time to the 1770s. He goes on adventures with Dr Joseph Warren and sees the past through a whole new perspective!
The more adventures Steve goes through the past, the more Steve starts to understand what patriotism actually means. Towards the beginning of the book, Steve didn’t understand the meaning of patriotism, but the more he sees in the past he understands that patriotism is caring for his country and knowing what it means to fight for his country.
Dr. Warren was the most patriotic person that Steve met on his adventures. One of the historical events that Steve experienced was the Battle of Bunker Hill. In this battle Steve knows that Dr.Warren was going to die. Steve thought that the musket ball was bringing him back to the past so he could save Dr. Warren.
Through the book, Steve really evolved into the patriot he was set out to be. Saving Dr.Warren, a True Patriot, can teach teens and adults about the Revolutionary War that Steve went through and how important it is to be patriotic to our country.
One of the Best Historical Fiction Novels I’ve Read Saving Dr. Warren… “A True Patriot” is a historical fiction novel by Jeffrey McKenna. It is about Steve O’Dell, an eighth grader who gets way more than he bargained for when he learns that his long lost great uncle wants to give him an old musket ball; this musket ball ends up making him travel back in time to the beginning of the American Revolution. He gets to meet some of the founding fathers including the forgotten founding father, Dr. Joseph Warren. Steve takes part in famous historical events like the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party and learns about the true meaning of patriotism along the way. Saving Dr. Warren… “A True Patriot” is a great book that taught me about a piece of American history I never knew about. It is a book that shows incredible American pride and patriotism in an easy-to-read format. I love how the author switches between different perspectives throughout the book, such as how it changes from Steve’s perspective to his brother, Rob’s. I like how he made each chapter short but packed with interesting facts about the revolution with an exciting storyline. Also, the way he leaves almost every chapter on a cliffhanger made me keep wanting more. This book really makes you stop and think about all of the patriots in our country who have made incredible sacrifices for us and our freedom. I would recommend this book to any kid, but especially to ones who like historical fiction and would like to learn more about American history.
The historical fiction novel Saving Dr. Warren … A True Patriot by Jeremy McKenna, is about an 8th grade boy named Steve O’Dell and how he learns to truly appreciate veterans and the sacrifices they make for our country. When Steve receives a musket ball and several manuscripts from his great uncle after winning an essay contest he doesn’t understand why he got them or what he’s supposed to do with them. Steve uses the musket ball and manuscripts to help him learn more about US history. He goes through time and learns about one of his relatives, Dr. Joseph Warren, a patriot most people haven’t heard of. Throughout the book Steve comes up with different ideas so Dr. Warren can be remembered, but none of them work, and he finally finds out what he’s supposed to do. This book is interesting and teaches history in a way that is not common. Seeing through the eyes of an 8th grader makes the story relatable, and understandable for kids. The book shares a lot of true facts about actual people and events from early US history. It also covers Dr. Warren and his actions which were ultimately forgotten. This book is perfect for people of all ages. It is a good book to read as something on your own, but it is also a good book if you want to learn more about history. It is enjoyable to read, and will teach you about a very important time in history.

Steve’s goal is to teach people about Dr. Warren and remember who he is and what he did. I really enjoyed the book and encourage readers 12 and up to check out the book. Saving Dr. Warren . . . A True Patriot By Jeff Mckenna. Jeff McKenna is a lawyer, husband, father, and a part time historian and author. Jeff believes a great way to learn to love America is by exploring her beautiful landscape and visiting cities and states from sea to shining sea. Jeff loves to reveal forgotten heroes and help them come alive for young Americans as they race through the pages of his historical fiction novel, Saving Dr. Warren... "A True Patriot". Saving Dr. Warren... “A True Patriot” is about an unpatriotic, intelligent eighth grader, Steve O’Dell who ends up coming across a musket ball that has the ability to take him back in time. He ends up traveling back to the revolutionary war where he meets Dr. Warren who is one of the most heroic historical figures although unfortunately today he is widely unknown. Steve goes on multiple adventures back in time where he experiences some very iconic moments, like the Boston Tea Party, The Boston Massacre, and the Battle of Bunker Hill. Saving Dr. Warren… “A True Patriot” Is a book that can be enjoyed regardless of age and I had a lot of fun reading it. One Of The Most Important People In American History Is Brought Back To Life
Have you ever heard of people such as George Washington, John Adams, or Paul Revere? Those people are very important, but even they don’t compare to the importance of Joseph Warren. Saving Dr. Warren… “A True Patriot” tells the story of one of the greatest patriots to ever set foot on American soil. This story follows a middle school boy trying to find patriotism after 9/11, and is a great mix of history and fiction.
It all started when Steve O’Dell was in an essay contest for school. He was brainstorming about what to write, and the reader learns that Steve isn’t really a patriot. All he wants is to please the judges and win the $500 prize. He wins the contest, and his essay goes viral in a way. People from communities all around the state are talking about the wonder kid who wrote this essay. Well, Steve feels like a big fraud, and just feels sick about the whole thing.
Then he gets invited to a Veterans Day celebration where his long lost great uncle lives. He goes to the celebration, gets all his praise, and his uncle Harold gives him an old satchel. Steve gets home and opens the satchel, and inside he finds an old manuscript and a musket ball from the time of the Revolution. He picks up the ball one night and finds out that it’s not just an ordinary musket ball.
This is a great book to read if you are interested in the Revolutionary War, the military, or the Founding Fathers, but it also has a fantasy and time travel twist on it. The author really showed how Steve struggled to find his mission back in time, and also when he realized what he needed to do. McKenna also developed Steve’s character throughout the story, and Steve’s change from a very unpatriotic person, to being a person that would put his life on the line for his country. This book can be a little confusing to follow with Steve switching back and forth through time periods, but I think it is worth reading for the story and plot.
This book is very relatable to kids who don’t really care about patriotism, or don’t know what it means, and will make them start to think deeper about the sacrifices made for their country. There are many important themes in this book and I think you should definitely give it a read.
The Enjoyable Saving Dr. Warren...A True Patriot Book Review Saving Dr. Warren...A True Patriot was a great book looking back at the events of the Revolutionary War. This book was written by Jeffery J. McKenna in which he reviews all of the most important things that happened in the terrible war. The main character Steve O’Dell, is entered into this essay contest in which he is required to write about what patriotism means to him. In my opinion, according to the book, Steve O’Dell really understands patriotism and he is willing to do anything to learn about patriotism. Patriotism is a very important topic in our world today. Honoring others who serve our country is a big task for us to do in this world but it’s very important. This is a GREAT book to read if you are very interested in historical fiction books. I personally love historical fiction books because it teaches us many things about our past. I highly recommend this great historical book.If you would like to learn a little bit more of our famous past...READ THIS BOOK! It truly will teach you that we need to not take so many things for granted because people are giving up their families and lives to serve our country.
Overall a 5 star novel! The book Saving Dr. Warren: A True Patriot by Jeffery J. McKenna is a good one for sure. An 8th grader in 2001 (right after 9/11), is entered into an essay writing contest to see who is the most patriotic, and to his surprise, he wins. But he is not truly patriotic. He has merely faked the entire thing and knew how to manipulate the judges to where he could win. Steve travels in time between the American Revolution and 2001, and the entire book shows his journey as his patriotism grows, and how he learns and becomes close to a man you’ve never heard of. This book was assigned to my 8th grade English class, and it's one of my favorite books so far. Although the book is about a 6th grade reading level, you would have never guessed it, and when I read the back of the book, it didn’t sound appealing. But the second I jumped in, I loved it. It was a page turner that kept the reader sucked in. Throughout the book, Steve changes time periods, but the book also changes points of view. It brings a new perspective to the book and gives it a little more *spice*. This book is like a cross between a realistic fiction novel and a historical fiction novel, and it brings about a new way for students to learn about their founding fathers, but not through a big, thick, history book.
The book Saving Doctor Warren, A True Patriot is based on the events of the Revolutionary War. In the book the main character Steve Odele is in 8th grade and has retrieved a musket ball that allows him to time travel. He travels back to the different times of the revolutionary war, and he mostly came back as William Eustis who was doctor Warren’s apprentice. Throughout the book Steve experiences some of the most important events of the War. The book does a great job of showing the struggles our soldiers went through in order for us to gain our independence. I love how the story shows the perspective of a young boy from the 21st century. It shows young kids and adults the true meaning of patriotism and reminds us of the history of our country and the people who fought for it. I loved reading the book because the characters were easy to relate too because they were in my grade. It was nice to be able to read about someone who I could relate to.
Saving Dr Warren… A True Patriot by: John Mckenna is a historical fiction thriller. The book goes for 19.95$ and is a must read. This book shows what true patriotism is and how we need to remember fallen heroes. It begins with the main character Steve O’dell, a middle school student, winning a writing contest on patriotism. Steve then learns that a great uncle of his that he did not know exists wanted to meet with him. His uncle gives him a briefcase full of old war documents, and a single musket ball. This was very strange to Steve because although he did win the writing contest on patriotism, he was not patriotic. One night while playing with the musket ball, Steve is thrown back in time to the 1770s and has become a man named Dr. Warren’s apprentice. Steve then becomes close to Dr. Warren but realizes he has never heard of that name, he finds out that Dr. Warren dies at the battle of bunker hill which is happening in the following months. Can Steve save him or will history forget Dr Warren once again. This book shows what being a patriot means. I think the book was very well written and interesting. I did not know who Dr. Warren was before this book, but now I remember what he did.
Reinforce Historical Knowledge Dr. Warren...A True Patriot by Jeff McKenna, is an extremely exciting realistic fiction book. Dr. Warren...A True Patriot is a great book for anyone who wants to know more about what it would be like to live in the 1700s. I like that the book has parts from the modern-day and the revolutionary times. The book is about a boy, who is 14, named Steve O’Dell and can time travel back into the 1700s. The whole reason for him to go back into that time is so he can try to save a man named Dr. Warren, whom Steve is distantly related to. Dr Warren was one of the many people who lived in the 1700s. Who fought for the United States of America's independence. When he travels back in time he witnesses many incredible scenes that sparked the revolutionary war, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston tea party.
This book is truly thrilling and reminds you of lots of knowledge from the 1700s. I would recommend this book to anybody and everybody, because it's a great book, and it captures a perspective of that time period extremely well. You can purchase this book on Amazon or you can download it on Good Reads. The one thing I did not like about the book was the ending, but all in all this is an excellent book.

After reading “Saving Dr. Warren a True Patriot,” I learned a lot about the Revolutionary War. The author, Jeffery J. Mckenna, does a fabulous job of making me feel like I am truly in the book and experiencing the same things as Steve O'dell, the main character. In the book, Steve learns he can use a musket ball to time travel into historic events such as the Boston Tea Party. These time traveling experiences kept me on my toes wanting to read more and learn about these historical events. Throughout Steve’s time traveling experiences he becomes more patriotic. He learns to love our country and care for those fighting for it, one being Dr. Warren. Steve, known as William Eustis during his time travels, is Dr. Warren’s apprentice. Steve has a goal of trying to save Dr. Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill, but will he succeed? From reading this book, I have learned about the American Revolution and what it would be like to actually be in war. I have also become more patriotic, just like Steve. I would one hundred percent recommend this book to anyone interested in the Revolutionary War, or just to anyone wanting a good story about an eighth grader traveling back into time.

Dr. Warren is a crucial figure in the creation of our country and our freedom. Over many years his legacy has been forgotten. Throughout this book, you will learn about Dr. Warren and how he played a role in all of the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. If you are looking for a book that will make you more appreciative of our veterans, this is the right book for you. This book is an easy read for those not particularly interested in history. Fantastic Novel! I would like to personally start this review off by talking about how much I enjoyed Saving Sargent Dr. Warren A True Patriot. This book has been one of my favorite reads inside of school. The main character, Steve, is a boy who gets hold of a special type of object that allows him to travel back in time. This leads to a whole bunch of situations where he gets to see many historical events take place. One of which was the Battle of Bunker Hill. All the while he is back in time, he is with a man named Dr. Warren. This book is trying to bring attention to an important historical figure who most people have never heard of. This figure’s name is Joseph Warren. Steve has to deal with the struggles of being an 8th grade boy along with the random occasions where he is sent back in time. Much more happens in these events, but you’ll have to read the book to figure out what! I’m glad I got to read this book and learn about who Dr. Warren was. I can recommend this book for anyone between 6th and 9th grade because this book was fantastic!
The book Saving Dr. Warren . . . “A True Patriot” by Jeffery J. McKenna is a great book for readers that enjoy learning about the American Revolution and the historical fiction genre . It starts with a 14 year old boy named Steve O’Dell in 8th grade at Needham Middle School. In the beginning of the book, Steve enters an essay contest about patriotism. At first, he doesn’t care much about the actual theme of patriotism, he just wants to win the 500 dollar prize.
