Porter Hamlin is a grief-stricken projectionist in a small-town vintage theater called The Magic. When he receives a cryptic letter his wife wrote to him before her death, he feels betrayed by the secrets it reveals. Secrets she kept from him during their long marriage. Then he receives more of her letters that anticipate future events before they unfold, letters that contain bizarre and detailed instructions for him to follow.
The more Porter tries to understand what's happening, the more he learns about the layers and folds of his life, his wife, and himself. He is determined to complete the quest laid out before him, if he can only figure out what it is. Projectionist is a story of love, heartbreak, and hope, all wrapped in twists and turns will keep you reading into the wee hours.
Jerry Hatchett is a digital forensic expert who works cases across the country and around the world. A lifelong technogeek, he has also consulted for hit TV shows like The Blacklist, Blind Spot, and more. When not forensicating or writing, he loves reading other authors, watching great movies, and trying to survive his too-smart dog Data.
This book from Jerry Hatchett, who typically writes technothrillers, surprised me because Hatchett pulls off a seemingly impossible task: taking the time-travel concept and adding completely new twists on it. I've read my share of time-travel stories, so I went into this one skeptical that he would be able to entertain me in any meaningful, new way.
Boy, was I surprised to find that I clearly had more to learn about time-travel. :)
I won't say too much, to avoid any spoilers, but parts of this felt like Back to the Future III and other parts reminded me of 11/22/63 -- in terms of clever spins and ambiance. But Hatchett goes beyond both of those into his own territory. And the best part is that he takes us with him.
GREAT, fast read (because you'll keep telling yourself, "One more chapter.... Gotta see what happens next!")!
What a story, totally something different! I had quite the time paying attention to where we were in time as each chapter began. There was a couple of moments where I thought of Groundhog Day. This may not be everyone’s up of tea but it was sure mine. Going back in time, time travel, opens up a whole world of possibilities and I enjoyed Porter’s ripples where he causes changes in the future with his actions. Then how he has to find his way back there to correct them. Nice finding a daughter for an ending. 5
I love a good story. Not just a good book. This is a good story. It’s a good book too. It is well written and the characters are wonderful! The tone (voice) of each character rings true. I fell in love with them. But the story was amazing. So nuanced and gripping. Great twists which I love too. I was actually thinking about the book while I was at work. Looking forward to reading it again in the evening. I didn’t want it to end but I could not stop.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.It is a very moving story with a number of twists and turns that keep you guessing. However the conclusion does a great job of tying everything together.
