Hank Zipzer

Hank Zipzer: The Pizza Party

Rate this book
An out-of-control pizza party. A lizard-feeding mishap. An overdue school project. What could go wrong? The world’s greatest underachiever is back!

Hank Zipzer has a few tips for hosting an epic pizza party. No parents at home? Check. Pizza and ice cream galore? Accomplished. Friends invited? Check. History homework finished? Er, not quite. And Hank may have forgotten his vow never to pet-sit a lizard — especially a live-locusts-and-mealworms-eating one. Can Hank get his big project done before tomorrow, or will one disaster lead to another? Well, if history is any guide, the answer is pretty obvious. . . . The amiable character originated by Henry Winkler — inspired by his own childhood — returns in a comical adventure set in a font designed to boost readability for kids with dyslexia.

I received this book from an Candlewick Entertainment as an Early Reviewer.

This is the first Hank Zipzer book I have read although I have watched many students check them out from my school library. Hank seems to be the British equivalent of Greg Hefley. Both consider themselves underachievers, and much of the book focuses on the antics of the main character trying to get out of a situation they put themselves into.

In this book, Hank’s sister and parents are out of the apartment while his sister gets her tonsils out. Hank has planned a “Grand Pizza and Ice-Cream Gala and Soiree” with his friends. This would be fine except he has a report on WWI due the next day. Add that he must take care of his sister’s pet lizard and let the shenanigans begin. The story is well-paced with short chapters that are just right for more reluctant readers. The sister’s brilliant character is fun as she shows more sanity than her parents over her operation.

What is most special about this book is the font. It is written in OpenDyslexic which increases the readability for those with dyslexia. The font is heavier at the bottom which seems to help ground the letters.

I would definitely recommend this book for students who have read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and are looking for something new. They won't be disappointed with this one.

Hank Zipzer: The Pizza Party is a novel about a young dyslexic boy named Hank Zipzer who tries to start a school essay but waits until the last minute. The night before his essay is due, he plans a “study night” filled with pizza and ice cream with his best friends. With his sister Emily getting her tonsils removed, his parents are out, but Hank is stuck babysitting Emily’s pet lizard Catherine. Hank has so much to do, can he finish it all?

This is a very short book, so there’s not a lot of room for character development. However, the characters are well explained and there is subtle exposition. While the story is moving forward, the reader slowly learns about the characters. My favorite parts are the chapters from Emily’s point of view because of her analytical style of thinking. I also love how different storylines meet each other throughout the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Big Nate or Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I would also recommend this book to anyone between 6 and 9. I give this book 3 stars.

Not only is Hank Zipzer the World’s Greatest Underachiever, he is also the World’s Greatest Procrastinator. When his sister, Emily has an overnight stay in the hospital following a tonsillectomy, Hank’s parents feel they both have to stay with her. So....never mind that Hank has a huge history project and has not even started yet, Hank and his friends, Ashley and Frankie plan an epic pizza party on the night before its due. Never mind, also that Hank’s teacher gave them three weeks to complete it.

Well, Hank is certain that he can:
1. Plan, order, and serve the epic party fare
2. Take care of Emily’s lizard, Katherine while she is away, and
3. Complete the history project

You can just guess what happens! Hank Zipzer: The Pizza Party is full of humor, chaos, and fun! A quick read which has a special dyslexic font to help struggling readers, but will be enjoyed by all!

Thank you to LibraryThing Early Reviewers, Candlewick Press, and Theo Baker for this ARC.
