Julius Caesar?
Oh my. Time travel with bumbling historians and fake tits was never as painful as this.
Funny short story and pretty classic mini-adventure for our over-educated fools, but I think I can blame most of the misfortune firmly on the Director's shoulders, this time. :)

Yes, I am addicted.
Another novella back to Rome where Caesar and Cleopatra are shacking up with the long suffering Calpurnia in the house just a few weeks before the Ides of March.
St. Mary suggests that Calpurnia may not have been as above suspicion as suggested.

I think I actually prefer these novellas to the novels. There's not as much time for the characters to really beggar things up (which they inevitably do) or for there to be a torrid sex scene between Max and Chief Farrell. I don't think I'm a prude but there's always way too much detail for me.
Anyway, Roman Holiday is a little jaunt to (surprisingly) Rome at the time of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. The team have a observe and record only remit. But obviously that's not going to last is it.
Funny, silly and with Markham in quite a decent role for a change. I love Markham. I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook read, masterfully as usual, by Zara Ramm. I'd highly recommend it to all St Mary's fans. If you've not read any before then do. They might get insanely crazy in parts but they're worth it.

The narrator saved this story for me, had I been reading the actual novella and not listened on audio, I most likely would have put it down. This quick historical fiction is set in the year 44 BC and follows Cleopatra and Julius Caesar being watched at by time travelling historians. There were a few moments when I did enjoy the historical aspect but with the story-line itself, I was feeling lost and slightly confused. Again, having not read the full series, I'm not the best person to be writing a review on this short read.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman use the WayBack Machine to travel back to 44 BC to see Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. While there they run into Max and her team of St. Mary’s historians who are there also as a part of the short story Roman Holiday first published in 2014.
Sherman: Hey! There’s Max and the St. Mary’s historians.
Peabody: Oh God, she hasn’t seen us has she??
Sherman: I don’t think so, why - ?
Peabody: Quick, duck behind this column before she does, we DO NOT want to talk to them.
Sherman: But - ?
Peabody: And Sherman, promise me you won’t drink with that bunch!
Sherman: But Mr. Peabody, I’m just a boy –
Peabody: Yeah and I’m just a talking dog that wears glasses, I’m telling you kid, those historians are trouble and Max, the cute little redhead, is the worst!
Sherman: Cute … redhead?
Peabody: Yeah, OK kid, we’ve got some history between us, but you can’t go bouncing up and down the timeline without making some associations if you know what I mean.

Max and the team travel to Ancient Rome to observe the household of Julius Ceasar where his wife Cornelia and his lover Cleopatra are both living. As you would expect that ain't gonna end well.
Another very quick little vignette from the world of St Mary's time travelling historians. It's good fun but only 34 pages and honestly I don't think it's worth the 86 cents they're asking for the Kindle version. As a freebie for the fans it's definitely worth it and luckily you can get the audiobook free from audible.com so that's my recommendation.

This was a tiny, likeable story about St Mary's trip to the Roman Empire to see Cleopatra. The story is short and sweet and doesn't add a whole lot to the series, but its always fun to just hang out with the gang :) 2.5*s

The crew at St Mary's is getting to be pretty good at their jobs in the real-time history observation business. By that, I mean when something goes phenomenally jelly-side-down, they respond with a minimum of paranoid screaming and blame throwing. This time, they are heading back to ancient Rome to catch a glimpse of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar. That's all that's supposed to happen. Just a peek, and then home again.
You know that doesn't happen.Caesar's wife notices them. She takes a shine to them. She doesn't want them to leave. Now what?
It's a cute short story, read by the voice of St Mary's, Zara Ramm.
In chronology, it is 3.5, but it plays well anywhere.

Bwahahaha. This is a summer holiday story, courtesy of St. Mary's.
The team (consisting of Markham, Guthrie, Peterson, van Owen and Max) jumps to Rome during the time of Julius Caesar when he had installed his mistress Cleopatra in his and his wife's house. Naturally, although the team had a perfectly good plan about what to do and what to record, everything goes NOT according to plan and they do get close up and personal with Caesar and Cleopatra themselves and have to make a creative and hasty retreat (nothing new there).
Apart from a wonderful description of Roman society and Caesar's villa, the most remarkable thing was the humour in this. From Markham cross-dressing for a reenactment of the movie scene in which Cleopatra is smuggled into a villa in a carpet, to some comments about Cleopatra's and Caesar's noses ...

Another short to accompany the main St Mary’s series. While it’s perfectly possibly to follow the series without reading the short stories, I would certainly recommend them as it provides you with some extra adventures and postpones the inevitable moment where you’ll have to return to the normal, non-time traveling world.
Expect everything you’ve come to expect from the series. Now set in Roman times with Caesar (the one that gave it the name) and Cleopatra, because when you install your mistress in your wife’s house, this of course is asking for problems.
The only remark I have is that I would not read it as #3.5. Without going into spoilers, book three ends on quite an important moment with quite the cliff-hanger, and book four opens there, so personally, I would recommend to read it before starting A Second Time, as it probably takes place somewhere during the events of that book.

I was looking for a quick little story to listen to on my Friday commute. I really didn’t want to start a full-length book and then let it sit over the weekend. An hour and a quarter trip back in time to meet Julius Caesar and Cleopatra seemed like just the thing.
This was my first time-traveling adventure with the gang from St. Mary’s, and I have to admit, even though Roman Holiday is #3.5 in the series, I didn’t feel like I was out of the loop at all.
I loved the snarky, sarcastic attitude of the protagonist, and Zara Ramm’s performance complimented this attitude perfectly. I had a lot of great chuckles as I listened. I have since added Jodi Taylor’s other books to my wish list and I’m looking forward to more historical/hilarious adventures with her.

One of my favourite short stories from the St Mary’s gang! Maxwell and co take a trip to see Julius Caesar and Cleopatra after an incident with some lemons (let’s just say you need it). Hilarious, fascinating and all the brilliant writing that Jodi Taylor never fails with.

Mr. Markham is one of the more colourful side characters of the Chronicles of St. Mary's and in this particular short story he showed that he is more than comic relief. Too bad that the rest of the crew threw him under the bus even though he was the one least responsible for this disaster. Hilarious little vignette combining all my favourite things about this series.

I'm a Classics nerd so I really enjoyed this one. The gang visit Rome in 44 BC to observe and document the mood in the city in the weeks leading up to Julius Caesar's assassination. Instead they end up having an audience with Caesar's wife Calpurnia, his mistress Cleopatra and foiling an attempted murder before they are scapegoated for said attempt. An average day really. And that's leaving out the sonic scream and Mr Markham's breasts.

A fun little story in the typical crazy St. Mary's sort of way. A fast read with some good laughs.
It should be said though, that this is in no way #3.5 in the series. Book #03 A Second Chance ends with some literally world changing events and book four A Trail Through Time starts of at the exact moment book #03 left off. This story just doesn't fit in there, because there is no "time" for this jump to Ancient Rome and because it doesn't fit with the chronology of ongoing events.
It is never actually stated, when this jump takes place, but from the tune of the story I would put it somewhere before the big Troy assignment and it's outcome. So this one should probably be read as #2.6 before or during the first chapters of A Second Chance. There seem to be lots of time between books #02 and #03.

Die Kackemagnete sind wieder unterwegs
Es fängt schon gut an bei der Verkündung der Mission. Brüste aus Zitronen, in Teppich eingerollte Männer, die ohnmächtig werden. Genauso wie immer in St. Marys! Ich war also wieder zu Hause.
Ich habe sehr viel gelacht in dieser kurzen Episode für zwischendurch. Ich wurde schief angeguckt, wie ich mich zwischendrin nicht eingekriegt habe vor Lachen, aber es war einfach abstrus, dass ich nicht anders konnte. Auf der einen Seite retten sie zwei Menschen, auf der anderen werden sie für diesen Anschlag belangt und dann legen sie noch halb Rom lahm und ihren eigenen Hangar. Einfach köstlich!
Einziges Manko, es war viel zu kurz und die Hälfte war eine Leseprobe des vierten Teils. Das finde ich immer sehr schade.

Short and funny. The dream team is on an adventure again to ancient Rome. Nothing super memorable about it, but it was a good time. Plenty of jokes about crossdressing and large noses.

I have legitimately no idea what I stumbled into, but regardless, it was a delightful romp. I picked up Roman Holiday because it was free on Audible, I was going to Rome, and I like time travel as a reading concept. But honestly, I think it gets somewhat confusing at times without much knowledge of the series from which this novella comes from. It has, however, very tongue-in-cheek humour and a fast pace, which made it enjoyable and interested me enough that I am putting the series down for future reading.

It has, however, very tongue-in-cheek humour and a fast pace, which made it enjoyable and interested me enough that I am putting the series down for future reading.

Hahaha, I love this book. Who wouldn't like (if you're an Historian) to go back in time to any time and see history unfold...not just read about it but actually see it happen???...Roman Holiday is a between novels short story 3.5 of The Chronicles of St Mary's by Jodi Taylor...First book I've ever read by her and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series. Delightful 4 stars

Great pick-me-up in the middle of a blackout! I thank Goodness I had the kindle with audio downloaded before everything went out.
The laughter was non-stop, so take care while drinking or you may spray your surroundings. This was very easy to visualize. I could imagine the whole thing happening!

I like these smaller instalments. This is said to fit between the third and fourth books in the series, but that is not vital. It only takes about an hour to read so is ideal for train journeys and the like.
