Extinction Plague

Rate this book
Around the world entire towns are being wiped out, a trail of boneless bodies left behind.

Professor Matt Kearns, paleo-linguist, and a team of scientific and military specialists, rush to decipher the hidden secrets of a pair of ancient stones that prophesise the next great extinction on Earth. They soon discover that the ominous predictions are linked to a plague of unstoppable creatures that have risen from the centre of the Earth.

In a heart-pumping adventure that begins in the hold of a sunken German U-boat, Matt Kearns travels to the lost Nazi treasure tunnels in Poland and dives deep down to sunken caves below Easter Island. Matt is fighting for his life, the ones he loves, and the existence of the entire human race.

Several thriller authors have covered the great extinctions and posed theories and conspiracy theories to tie them into creative and thrilling narratives, but Extinction Plague is unique among them. Compelling and frenetic, it stands solidly among the best I have read in terms of plotting and character development. When it comes to the theory behind the events, the plot really shines. The idea behind the extinctions is clever…the reason we never found evidence is simply brilliant. I was solidly impressed.

So nice to finally be able to listen to the latest Matt Kearns episode. 'Extinction Plague' lived up to what I have come to appreciate and expect from this series. Always intriguing, educational, and filled with horrific primordial creatures my worst nightmares couldn't compete with.

Love learning fascinating information about what the world was like before asteroids and volcanos wiped out most of existence billions of years ago - this also serves to greatly heighten the level of horror and excitement I relish. Mr. Beck's books are consistently fresh, extremely smart, and beyond terrifying.

I hope this series continues for a long time....

My man, Matt Kearns, has a huge battle in Excinction Plague. The world is always in trouble, and it seems that this world is no better off. While enjoying some quiet time, Matt finds himself watching a show that literally speaks to him from the grave. A tablet has surfaced with a prophesy of creatures that will RETURN and destroy every living thin on earth. Can he stop it? Can he and those he love survive the battle for the human race?

Greig Beck never fails to give you something to cringe away from; Extinction Plague is the story that keeps you watching for critters. Kill them all, I say! LOL The world of Kearns is faced with something beneath Easter Island that can literally suck the life right out of you and leave you empty, deflated, but it can be stopped. And while reading this book, I held on to hope, while grabbing at my arms, my feet, my mental existence!

So good a read- I can’t wait for the next book to whisk me away!

What a great read! Great story line, fast paced and really good fun. My only regret is that I read it in one sitting. I love all of Greig Beck books and have read them all multiple times. It will be the same with this one. If you haven’t read Beneath The Dark Ice then make sure you do. One of my all time favourites and referenced in this story. If your looking for action and escapism then look no further the Extinction Plague. Can’t wait to also have it as an Audio book 😊

A fun, sci-fi adventure read. I always find Greig Beck books to be like a good, but slightly B-grade action movie - entertaining, a bit weird, kind of wild, and you don't know why you enjoyed it, but surprisingly you did. I enjoyed Extinction Plague more than Fathomless (which feels way too drawn out and I am yet to finish). My biggest complaint here is that there's a lot of characters to keep tabs of, which can be confusing, and there's also multiple sub-plots happening, which all concluded in a bit of a rush towards the end (which felt like a bit of a pity). Overall, this is a good "read-in-a-day" adventure book.

TW: There's some solid descriptions of what happens when bones are removed from the human body. This book may not be for anyone who doesn't like mention of gore or body parts.

When is the next Extinction?

If Greig Beck was right, the next massive event would be soon. Matt Kearns learns of tablets left from the Aztlanteans he realizes they predict a massive extinction event for this year.
Can Matt, Colonel Hammerson and a group of specialists head off the event. From all over world, creatures are coming up from below and nothing on earth can stop them. Join the team and hope they find the solution before it's too late.

This is book 4 of the Matt Kearns Series and it is so fast paced and really connects with a plague feel in that it's one thing after another, after another and so on...with something popping up left, right and centre to cause hell. Matt's life gets thrown into turmoil when events get close to home and at the same time he finds joy in the most unexpected of places, this is definately a book for the whole range of emotions. The answers to various questions posed within the story seem so simple yet you would never have thought of them (At least, I never did) and I think its fantastic. I look forward to starting the next book from another series to see where the author goes with it.

Another fantastic book by Greig Beck

Fascinating and captivating! The storyline was interesting and so well written. A great mix of adventure and thrilling action, I couldn't put it down! Matt is back to getting into more danger in order to save the world! Highly recommend it but feel it will be appreciated more if the previous books are read though it is not necessarily needed to follow this story but you would definitely understand this book better.

Ok. You scared me once again. A roller - coaster ride. Scary and triumphant. Monsters and heroes.
What more can you want in a Grieg Beck story! More pages ! Not much sleep 💤 and a marathon reading session. It was great read from start to finish. Can’t wait to listen to the audiobook.

Another good book from Grieg. Nothing like a good disaster and plague style bugs. I sometimes think he needs to write longer books has they have so much more promise. All the questions raised. Such good books.

Another incredible adventure for Matt and the HAWKs. This book had an amazing interpretation of history, science and the egos of Man that creates a spellbinding and in many ways horrific, read.

This was okay. Like a printed version of a straight to video film which you can read/watch with your brain switched off. Just okay.

Matt Kearns, paleo-linguist, is back once again for another adventure. A Nazi-era German U-boat is discovered down in New Zealand, leading to a series of strange discoveries and all too soon all over the world swarms of bugs start devouring everything in sight – killing humans, animals and everything in it’s wake. Matt and the team need to first discover what’s going on, and then once again save the world.

I’m a huge fan of Grieg Beck’s but I admit I have a particularly soft spot for Matt Kearns and his adventures. Beck somehow keeps Matt’s stories a little lighter to my mind – and less heavily invested in all the military/ammo aspects of the storyline. With a Kearns adventure I know there will be not just science and thriller aspects with a solid and well woven plot, but usually there is an excellent dose of paranormal and a strong influence of a more intellectual/academic and research based side to the adventure. For me, personally, this hits a really good spot and I’ve never yet been disappointed by one of these stories.

And this book delivers in spades. From Nazi Germany to Easter Island, the Polish mountains and all across the globe Matt and the team piece together what’s actually happening and then fight to save the world from extinction. It’s a magnificent adventure and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I particularly liked how solidly Beck wove together a number of different plotlines. It’s clear he’s put a good amount of research into each different element and while the final picture pushes the boundaries of realism, each aspect is clearly weighted strongly in reality and is both exciting and also totally plausible.

This fine line between fact and fiction is a very delicate balance and I really love how Beck seems to straddle it perfectly. That, coupled with the adventure and scare-factor is an absolute highlight for me of all the Matt Kearns stories and one of the reasons they’re an auto-buy for me and one of my favorite series.

Readers looking for a fast paced, fun adventure novel where the hero and his team race against the clock (and where the bad guys are not just a few horrible people, but the bone-eating, creepy, bug kind) this is an excellent story and one I can strongly recommend.

What a fast paced, action packed, horrifying imagining of what could happen in our society. As my first foray into Greig Beck's novels, this hit the mark with a great story, developed charcters and a thoroughly reseached background. There wasn't a point throughout the novel that I found to be too absurd or unbelieveable, which can happen in other extinction type fiction. Beck wraps enough researched information around the elements in his story to allow you to imagine, second-guess and question but ultimately accept and continue with the story. A great skill.

It was a great side-step into a different genre for me which also had ties to historical fiction. I would thoroughly recommend this to mature late teen and adult readers. I listened to Extinction Plague as an audiobook which was narated by Sean Mangan.

Something is bugging me

I really like this author, his writing style, character development, and story lines. I'm not crazy about Matt Kearns though. I just finished this book right in the middle of our current difficulty and it allowed me to escape its presence. I hope it will do the same for you.

Extinction Plague is a fast-mover with interesting plot twists and an almost happy ending. Beck just keeps researching odd historical references and turning out incredibly fun reads. The tie-backs to previous books are not terribly obvious but add a nice touch if you’ve read them. Liked some of the new characters as well. Opens new paths for more action.

Listened recently as an audiobook.
As usual, Greig Beck writes well and I really enjoyed the next saga in the Matt Kearns series.
I like the intertwining of the storyline with references to real scientific and historic facts to make some of the story to appear (potentially frighteningly) plausible - and to be told by Beck at the end where those references came from.

Another fun read, although somewhat horrific from Greig Beck. I really enjoy his books, they are easy to read and have just the right amount of violence and ickiness in them to keep them moving along at a good pace and Matt Kearns gets more likeable with each book he appears in.

Dammit, more!

As always, Greig uses things from our real world and wonderfully creates scenarios where shit hits the fan! NO ONE is safe from disaster and I mean no one. You are always surprised by who makes it and the ending. Good on ya, Greig!

an awesome listen as always...you can't beat the team of Greig Beck and Sean Mangan. With the storyline ending so a follow up book seems possible it's exciting and nail biting all in one short story. Poor Matt just can't keep out of trouble!

This is by far the best of the Matt Kearns series. Excellent action and scientific plausibility with no slow points as in previous novels. Excellent explanation for the lack of evidence to be found for the major extinction events. This story will be hard to beat in future episodes.

Sucked in

The way Greig writes and tells his stories just suck me into them! I lose track of time and don't want to stop reading. There is NOT a Greig Beck book that I've read that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed reading . Every one of them is A+ in my opinion.

It felt like something was missing, but nonetheless this was still a good read that held my interest, the creatures were disturbing, the antagonists conniving & the heroes fearless, the pacing was ok but felt a bit rushed towards the end, based on the ending this is probably a two parter, which I'll be looking out for.
