I got this book for my dad, who is 66 and suffers from painful gout flareups and also has other health conditions. The author is thorough in explaining the condition and how diet affects symptoms. The writing is straightforward and the explanations make sense, I like how she talks abut other diets that are out there and even the medications used to treat gout. The lists near the beginning, or what to avoid and what to eat in small or bigger amounts, was the most helpful part of the book. The recipes look great to me and the photos are lovely. The only issue is that my dad, as an older blue collar guy, didn't know what a lot of the ingredients were or how to acquire them, such as lentils and quinoa, and some of the spices. We'll definitely try some of the recipes for him, but overall the recipes are a little intimidating for an older person who is used to cooking the basics.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This might be the best gout cookbook I’ve read through. Since a loved one started having attacks a few gears ago, I’ve been researching and trying to learn how best to help. Usually the resources I find come off as judgmental and impossible with ridiculously high standards. This cookbook recognizes reality and that not all gout sufferers are the same with the same causes. Also, these recipes are great and inclusive having vegan, vegetarian, diabetic and more friendly options. I think this would be a worthwhile cookbook for those just looking to have a healthier, lower-purine diet.

I was given a copy, via the publisher, of The Healing Gout Cookbook: Anti-Inflammatory Recipes to Lower Uric Acid Levels and Reduce Flares. I chose to review this cookbook and my opinion is freely given.

The author does a good job of explaining gout, the stages of the illness as well as how an anti-inflammatory diet can help to alleviate the symptoms. There is a good explanation of different medications that have some success at treating gout, foods to try or to avoid, and essential ingredients.

The recipe sections include plenty of delicious dishes, full of healthy ingredients and flavor. I have listed those chapter headings below with some of my favorite recipes.

Breakfast: Peanut Butter and Banana Breakfast Wrap; Almond Oatmeal Pancakes

Soups, Salads, and Sides: Sesame Ginger Broccoli Slaw; Fiesta Rice; Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Horseradish Mustard

Vegetarian Entrees: Savory Red Lentil Stew; White Bean and Kale Soup; Pasta Fagioli; Vegetarian Baked Ziti

Fish and Seafood: Broiled Salmon with Balsamic Vinegar; Parmesan Crusted Broiled Scallops; Salmon with Ginger Soy Marinade

Chicken: Chicken Fajitas; Pesto Chicken with Broccoli; Chicken Tikka Masala

Beef and Pork: Pork Stir-Fry with Brown Rice; Chili Lime Steak; Pork Carnitas

Desserts: Blueberry Peach Cobbler; Banana Bundt Cake with Cinnamon Glaze

Kitchen Staples, Condiments, and Dressings: Cumin Lime Salad Dressing; Simple Marsala Sauce

The most useful part of this cookbook for those with gout is the Purine Level Chart at the back of the book. I like how each recipe contains a list of its dietary attributes, like diabetic friendly, gluten-free, kidney friendly, vegetarian, and the like. The few photographs scattered throughout are colorful and striking, so I wish that there have been more. Overall, The Healing Gout Cookbook is good for those suffering from a multitude of inflammatory diseases, but it is also well balanced enough for all to enjoy.

Gout is a very painful form of arthritis where even a gentle breeze across the affected area (usually the big toe) can be excruciating. If you have this malady or know someone who does then please pick up this book. The author has done a fabulous job of detailing the causes and generally prescribed remedies that can ameliorate the pain. But more importantly she has laid out a collection of mouth-watering recipes which will help the pain not return again.

My problem with most recipe books for chronic pain and health issues can be summed up in the old adage which says, “If it tastes good, spit it out.” This seems to be a truism about a lot of recommendations for those of us who need to eat healthy because of heart issues, obesity, diabetes, etc. But that is not the case with this book. The recipes not only cover gout but also other issues which are common to a lot of us.

Just reading the recipes made me wonder whether I had picked up the right book. An example proves my point. Evidently, “Elvis Presley loved the combination of peanut butter and bananas”. In each recipe, Lisa highlights how this particular combination of nutrients is healthy not only for gout but also for other health problems. In the sited example not only is it gout friendly, but it is simple and works for those who are vegans. Another example is the Berry Breakfast Yogurt Parfait, which sounds more like a dessert, but is easy, gout friendly, diabetic friendly, gluten-free, kidney friendly, and vegetarian. Can it get any better than that?

Upon request the publisher sent me a copy of the book to review.

I don't have gout, but I have a friend that regularly cooks for her son-in-law who does, and she is desperate for interesting recipes that she can cook and serve when he visits. I can tell at a glance that these recipes are easily achievable for even a cook with modest skills. The readily-available ingredients are laid out clearly, the instructions are easy to follow, and the nutritional info is included. Each recipe also includes a check list of features, such as "30 Minutes", "Diabetic Friendly", "Gluten Free", "Kidney Friendly" and "One Pot". A 20-page introductory section describes the symptoms and causes of gout and discusses the types of food that must be avoided to avoid flareups, as well as foods that are okay to help manage the disease.

Each chapter of the book starts out with an appealing color photograph, and each recipe is 1 or 2-pages in length with plenty of white space to make your own notes. The chapters include: Breakfast, Soup Salads & Sides, Vegetarian Entrees, Fish & Seafood, Chicken, Beef & Pork, Desserts, Kitchen Staples. The recipes all utilize common ingredients that would ordinarily be found in any well-stocked kitchen. This cookbook will give anyone dealing with gout hope that they can eat normal and diverse dishes that will help keep the painful symptoms in check.

This book has a lot of information. It starts off with what Gout is and different diets. It also has a handy list separated in to different foods that should be avoided, used in moderation and encouraged foods. The recipes all look very tasty and easy to follow and cook. At the back there is a handy index to make finding a favorite recipe quick and easy.
