Yumeaki Hirayama has said that the grotesque descriptions in his writing were inspired by seeing a number of suicide jumpers and car accidents in adolescence.
In 2006 he won the Mystery Writers of Japan Award and placed first on the Konomys Rankings in 2007 for Short Stories with Dokuhaku suru yunibasaru yoko merukatoru. He won the Japan Adventure Fiction Association Prize in 2009, and the Haruhiko Oyabu Award in 2011, for his novel Diner.
