I grabbed my 8-year-old sister and ran away from our abusive mother. I was 17 years old. We started over and we had an extremely happy life. I lost Henry, shortly after we settled in Fort Smith Arkansas. He disappeared and we didn't know what happened. With the help of my friend Steph, an amazing PI, we went to Venezuela to search for him. He'd been gone for ten years.by then. Gayle went off to college and we were free to go find him. We followed clues and eventually found him.Now that I have my soulmate back, I wasn't sure who he was anymore. We suffered from PTSD and needed help..How do we stay together and heal?
Amazing... This is an amazing story that begins with seventeen-year-old Samantha who has suffered greatly, yet she is far more concerned with protecting her younger sister from their abusive home. And she is willing to sacrifice everything to that end. With perhaps two stories blended together, the author addresses tragic aspects like domestic abuse, PTSD and a desperate search for a lost love, all the while building strong and unexpected bonds of friendship for the main character. An awe-inspiring book that takes you on a wild, heartfelt ride with a flood of emotions stirring you every step of the way. It is a beautiful story and I highly recommend it.
Samantha's story and how she fought to achieve a better life for herself and her sister. A story about her love for a boy who disappeared from her life and her quest to find out what happe. Lots of emotions flowing in this story.
This story will pull you in an grab your heart from the very beginning. The characters are captivating. The love that Samantha and Henry have is timeless. The unconditional love she had for everyone is inspiring. when she ran taking her eight year old sister Gayle was to save them from abuse.Growing the hard way she was such an inspiration. Then after getting her sister to a stable young woman with a full ride scholarship. She starting thinking about Henry again an vowed to go an find him.The PTSD and abuse issues will break your heart but the unconditional love she shows a strength that is inspiring.there are so many twists an turns to this story you will be riveted until the very last page and leave you begging for more.I love the was this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes an you can feel their emotions an their pain.I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.
What a deep heartwreching beautiful story of a love that never dies and a journry you will not soon forget. Sam is such a strong woman to take on the world she is so brave and as she meets Henry again it is the happiest moment and sad one all at the same time I mean how do you deal with that after being apart for years to be torn apart again and PTSD overwhelming your world. The characters are just beautiful and written to perfection that come to life right off the pages and I'll tell you it is overwhelming and hard at times but so so worth it.
In a world of pain and hatred, young high school student Samantha is determined to save her little sister’s life by removing her from their evil biological mother that has left permanent scars on her body and mind and has now begun her horrific abuse to little Gayle. But first, she must attend her prom with the hope that her one and only true love Henry will understand why she must leave. After a dance with Henry and a motel room, Samantha’s virginity is lost to her true love. She confesses she has to leave that night and take Gayle before her mother ships her off to a man Gayle doesn’t know. Henry loves Sam and is determined to meet up with her when she and Gayle are settled.
After Samantha and Gayle find themselves settled in a little remote town, the phone goes unanswered when Sam tries to reach out to Henry. She finally discovers that Henry has been taken and thrown into the pits of hell in Venezuela. Sam and her friend Steph set out to rescue Henry after Gayle goes off to college. What a difficult journey it will be!
In this epic novel, Ms. Goldwyn captures the emotional and physical hell PTSD can do to a person. But, through love, patience, counseling, and tolerance healing can begin. Ms. Goldwyn’s gift of loving her characters bleeds out through every page. This story is heart wrenching but breathtakingly beautiful. It is more than a five star novel. It is a gift of what unconditional love looks like. Well done!
This is not my type of novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed.
Beautiful Boy is a touching story of two sisters who escape an abusive home to begin a new life. Sam, the oldest, takes on the mothering role of her younger sister, Gayle, and they settle in Fort Smith. Sam gravitates toward good friends and kind people, creating a grounded environment for her sister. One person Sam brings into their lives is a high school nemesis of hers whom she runs into, Stephanie. Compassionately, Sam forgives her and Steph becomes her best friend.
When Gayle leaves for college, Sam experiences an "empty-nest" feeling. Not until then does she have the time to reevaluate her own life. She has never been able to forget her high school love, Henry, who disappeared in the middle of their relationship. She felt she would be reunited with him one day. With Gayle no longer there to watch over, Sam and Steph venture to a foreign country in search of Henry.
This is a tale of love, growth, and mending. Beautiful Boy containers two storylines. The first is the story of two sisters and the bond between them. The second is a love story with many twists and turns, including an inside look at PTSD.
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed. I'd like to read more from this author.
Parts of this story were completely heartbreaking. I felt so much for Sam & Gayle! But how brave is Sam? Taking on her little sister like that, not looking back. Total rockstar!
Jeez, that’s only the start! What Sam & Stephanie do is so ballsy, who does that? On their own mission to Caracas to find the boy who has had Sam’s heart since she was 17, they find themselves in a lot of scary situations but ultimately win against all odds!
I was both sad and happy at the end, sad because Sam was leaving alone but happy because everything had seemed like it was going to fall into place. Great story & writing by Kathi!

Henry and Samantha's love seemed insurmountable, until he promised to meet her and then disappeared. Once Samantha decided to search for Henry, the twists and suspense begin. Can they find their way back to each other?
I thought the book started a little slow for me, a lot of telling where I like more showing. But I loved the emotions that you get when souls are bared and hearts laid open. I can'I'm excited to read Beautiful Man next!
Beautiful Boy is a dark but beautiful love story and a touching journey of terrifying and heartbreaking events for two emotionally broken sisters with deep scars. A well-written storyline that pulls the readers in filled with everything from: heartbreak, sacrifice, compassion, courage, growth, mending, true love with many twists and turns along the way. The love is beautiful and suppresses the darkness in the story. Beautiful Boy also touches on the hard subject of PTSD. Many people who have lived with PTSD will relate to the story and understand the depth of the storyline; while for others this storyline can be dark, there are triggers throughout the story and it may not be suitable for all readers.
The characters are well developed and work well together, giving support and strength to each other. Readers must experience their story for themselves; crying for the characters stories, hate the villains, while laughing and cheering for the good guys. This story really packs a blow to the readers emotions, cutting right through. I love strength of the characters in this story, well done Ms. Kathi.
Author Ms. Kathi Goldwyn is a phenomenal writer, she has done her research and shows her readers her knowledge of the subject matter in her story. I love this book and cannot wait to read the next edition of this series. A wonderful first appearance from Kathi Goldwyn and I look forward to reading more of her books. Congratulation, Miss Goldwyn. These are my personal thoughts and feelings about this book and the author Ms. Kathi Goldwyn, and I am giving both 5-stars.
Kathi Goldwyn’s debut novel, Beautiful Boy, hit the stands running. An emotionally-charged drama told in first person keeps the point of view spot on, helping the reader see, hear, and feel the raw passion driving each character.
Twists and turns steer this story through gut-wrenching situations, but at the same time, reveal what perseverance and the indomitable human spirit can accomplish when guided by friendship, hope, and love.
The storyline begins as the high school heroine, Samantha, vows to escape the abusive hands of her mother and save her sister, but evolves into a memoir-like tale as the search for her high school sweetheart drags her across the globe into a Venezuelan military war zone. To unravel the mystery of her beautiful boy’s disappearance, they both must face demons that would be easier left in the dusty corners of the past.
A deep and provocative story, especially for a first time author. Well done. Note: Be aware there are multiple R-rated scenes.
Abused by their mother Sam did the one thing that would save them, she took her little sister and ran. They found a new home in a small town in Arkansas. Sam was safe, but more importantly her sister was too. She left behind everything and everyone, including her one true love Henry.
Henry had it all planned out. After graduation he would join his love Sam in Arkansas... or so he thought.
I don't do spoilers so that is as much as I will say about the actual storyline, but I will say this... For a debut book this story really packs a punch! The emotions cut right through you and the story flows pretty good. The beauty of love overpowers the darkness, but be warned there are triggers throughout the story. A wonderful debut from Kathi Goldwyn and I look forward to reading more of her books.
Beautiful Boy is one of those stories that capture your heart and runs away with it. Goldwyn has created characters that resonate and inspire the reader to keep reading and to root for their ultimately winning.
A dysfunctional family, an escape to a "better place", but the one left behind that still owns your heart. There are strength and determination in this story, Goldwyn masterfully weaves danger and disillusionment and heartbreak into a tapestry that gives a fitting end to Sam's story. Definitely recommend!
[I was fortunate to receive a copy of the book from the author through the 2021 Winter Games Reader Challenge, with no obligation to review. The opinions herein are given freely and are entirely my own.]
This is such an awesome book. PTSD is so real and can be caused by so many different reasons. 17 year old Samantha grabs her 8 year old sister and runs. Runs away from their mother, a monster that thrives on abuse. But when her abuse turns to 8 year old Gayle, Samantha knows she has to get the out. Her only regret is leaving the only boyfriend, she has ever had. Henry promised to join them as soon as he gets back from Venezuela , his last family trip with his parents. 10 years later, Gayle is off to college and now it is time for Sam to find out why Henry stopped calling 10 years ago. When she finds out that he disappeared while on that last vacation. His parents used all there money and even sold their home in attempts to find their only son. This book takes us right in middle of the action and there is plenty of it. It takes us into the head and into the heart of those suffering and trying to survive PTSD ( post traumatic stress disorder)
This is a beautiful story and it deals with life, real life. There is a coming of age story here, but also a story of redemption, heartbreak, the power of love and family as well as a story of strength and heart.
The story follows the two main character as they navigate a life that was unexpected; learning and stumbling along the way. We as readers follow along with them as they try and make the best out of themselves after a history of pain and disappointment.
There are emotional triggers in this story but the author did such an amazing job of keeping them realistic that they never felt forced or untrue. It was a pleasure to read about issues that are familiar and seeing the characters make it through.
I really enjoyed following along and I look forward to the second book in this duet. A really great debut story and one I recommend to those who love realistic characters, 4.5 stars.
Henry and Sam have history! Henry is Sam's first love in every way. Henry loves Sam unconditionally. When Sam has to quickly leave her abusive mother in fear for her baby sister, Henry agrees to eventually meet up with her; unfortunately, he disappears in Venezuela on a trip with his parents. Years goes by and she hooks up with an old friend Steph who is now a PI. Sam has always wondered what happened to Henry so she asks Steph to help her find some answers to his disappearance and it takes them on a journey to Venezuela. This is where the mystery unravels and oh my twist and turns for sure!
Be prepared this book also deals with PTSD and how debilitating it is.
Thank you Kathi for bringing this to our attention in this beautifully written book. I definitely can’t wait to read the next book and hopefully see a HEA!
So sad and confusing. Henry's actions and thoughts when with that woman later was really not a man in love with one woman. To find he had a piercing he would have to use a tattoo shop. That means he's in a town. Why couldn't he escape. Those piercings are for pleasure so sounds like he didn't do it for Sam yet he claims he loved her . Then he says he thinks he maybe in love with Sam. I just feel like the way he thinks around another woman makes it untrue in his feelings for Sam. I feel the romance in this book is one-sided. He tells about all the women he was with before but I get the feeling Sam wasn't with anyone since Henry. I'm from the era of Vietnam as well. They recruited the guys as soon as they graduated. It was this war were PTSD was recognized as a real mental problem. It took forever till, they flipped out, that they did something about it.
This was a hard book to read. I don't get it. He's in the jungle but he has piercings and tatoos . Where does he get the money and the piercings for pleasure. I just have a hard time when hearing all of love for Sam but he's with lots of women. What's with Chapter 47 when Sam is with Henry yet talking about Dave? You explain the reason he came on to the girl in the eating place? That was like he felt nothing for Sam to have an attitude towards another woman. Also he was with other women but she was with no one. How does that even out? Also Chapter 53 its Marshal not Dylon. I just have a hard time with romance in this book. It seems its one sided no matter what he says. Its been ten years. I look forward to the next part and see how it goes.
Where to start?! This story hits home for a lot of people but especially me. When your reading, this story pulls you in. One minute your are screaming at the Mom and then you are cheering for the girls! Your heart swells when Sam is at Prom but then breaks when she says goodbye to Henry. You are jumping for joy along with the girls when they get their first apartment then Gayle gets sick so you worry with Sam. When Sam sees her old nemesis from high school you are amazed that Steph turned out to be a sweet, loving woman. Farther into the story Sam and Steph go to Caracas to find Henry. They find danger along the way. This story is a must read!!!
I fell in love with this story. This is a beautiful but dark read. I was swept in from the beginning with the way Mrs. Goldwyn wrote this it kept me glued from the beginning as it hit so many emotions. I could relate to Samantha on how she was treated at such a young age. I was on such an emotional roller-coaster from one minute bawling to laughing the next. This was so well written I seriously can't wait to read more from mrs Goldwyn. I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a great read.
This is a great first volume it grips you from the start and keeps you till the end. Samantha never had a good life but she tried her hardest to make a life for her and her little sister as best she could. Their mother was not a caring mother in fact she was a monster. Beatings and hatred were all Samantha knew until she coupled up with Henry. Another place another life Samantha was happy, her life was good. Henry was lost in more ways than one, could he find himself again.
This was a great debut novel by a great author! Diving into a world of uncertainty, our main character puts everything at risk when she goes searching for her first love. Full of twists and turns, this story was beautifully crafted and gave us some insight into some of the more serious issues that our characters face. This story was raw and emotional, and I'm so excited to see where book two takes us!
What an amazing story , right from the first chapter I was hooked !! You really get emotionally attached to the characters, Sam is just a fantastic human being . She’s smart , loyal , brave and never gives up . The storyline is so good and well written especially when dealing with certain issues , you can tell a lot of research was put into this story . It’s so good I can’t wait to read the next installment !!!
This is a new author for me and I was very unsure about the book. Samantha reminds me a lot of myself, struggled through life, determined, never giving up. It took so much courage for her and her sister to start a new life. Sometimes the past does come back to you. This book is a lot of ups and downs. I really enjoyed this book!
A love story of two high school kids. Sam and her younger sister escape an abusive home. Sam makes a new life for them both. That new life.comes with a price. Leaving Henry, and finding him lost. The story progresses with Henry's rescue. Finding him means they face his PTSD.
A beautiful portrayal of the human spirit. Sam's journey from domestic abuse to her never ending search for her true love, Henry, is an emotional, gut-wrenching story that will stay in my heart for a long time. I highly recommend this compelling novel, although the subject matter of abuse and PTSD may be difficult for some.
I really enjoyed the story. I started at bedtime thinking I would just read one chapter and go to sleep. Boy was I wrong. I was up reading all night, I just had to keep reading. Enjoy the book hangover.
This was a tale of first love, coming of age, ptsd and lost love. The twists that arise once Sam starts to look for Henry years later are unexpected and left me wanting to read more. A very intriguing story from a first time author who I can’t wait to see more from as her work progresses.
this was a really first story you wrote! though to me i felt something was missing. she loved a boy until they had to leave to escape the bad life. now she wants to find him after he went missing. read to find out what happens.
My heart bled through this entire story! From start to finish so much heartbreak and torture. But the strength and love found had me on a Rollercoaster! This was so good and I can't wait to read the next one!
