Not Quite #2

Not Quite Beast

Rate this book
At twenty-eight years old, Sam thought they were old enough to stop making terrible decisions. But taking a merc job for a human millionaire can’t be described as anything else. Neither can drinking so much fairy moonshine that you forget there are good reasons not to let yourself think with your…parts.

Hunting people is a whole different world than hunting supernatural beasts, and Sam and their guild might not come out on the winning side of this one. When the goons Sam is hired to track down fight back with magic, it rapidly becomes apparent that Theo isn’t telling the whole story about why people want him dead. Sam loses Fin and Emerson, and it takes drastic measures to get them back, including working with a bunch of assholes Sam knows better than to trust.

And why the hell do Sam’s most inconvenient shifter impulses choose now to kick in? Sometimes a half-human, half-monster, half-male, half-female fiend hunter just can’t catch a break….

Author’s Note:

I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. In my books you will find varied characters and varied sexuality. In general, you probably won’t find many alpha males or fainting females, and relationships may have a more poly feel.

The Not Quite series is a harem/reverse harem urban fantasy series of novellas (between 35,000-45,000 words) and contains the following:

*adult language, and lots of it

*moderate levels of violence/gore/action

*graphic sexual situations

*polyamory/ multiple lovers

*LBGTQ and straight themes (the main character is intersex and will have both male and female lovers, and this is a harem, so expect M/F, M/M, F/F, MMMFF etc.)

*as usual, my characters all have their own emotional scars. This means the book MAY contain mentions of abuse, unpleasant situations, etc. Please do not read if you are triggered by things like this.

*occasional “cliff-hangers” or lead-ins to the next book may occur, though generally at least one major plot arc shows completion or at the very least, forward progress.

*word count does not include teaser chapters or other fluff material at the end.

Sometimes our greatest strengths come from our deepest challenges. I write magic and romance, starring a cast of creatures with feathers, fins, and teeth. My books include paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy romance--with the occasional steampunk or alien story thrown in just for kicks. My pan heart firmly believes love is love, so you'll see straight, LGBTQIA, monogamous, reverse harem, and poly relationships in my work. My favorite theme is overcoming our inner demons and the insecurities that hold us back.
I also advocate for self-development and mental health and dabble in non-fiction as time allows. I love the outdoors and still hope to be abducted by fae! (I may have more in common with my characters than I care to admit.)

I did not enjoy this as much as the first one.
Sam and Finley are now in a relationship, their guild still exists and Sam is just now coming around to tell them about their deal with the politician. I found the mystery this time around fairly boring. Too many new people were introduced that did not get enough page time to be fully developed, Theo is just too convenient.
While I liked Sam's snark initially it's getting boring really quickly. The constant threats and self-deprecating jokes seem a little more performative this time around - like, look at how cool and aloof this character is! - without offering any deeper insight into Sam. Instead, the narrator is just telling over and over again how Sam is above it all. Some comments are also repeated way too often in a novella.
I could also do without the constant sexualization/sex jokes/innuendo. Why is every person they meet hot, finds Sam hot and is ready to flirt? I was looking forward to the female love interests but Ahura's introduction left a lot to be desired in my opinion.

Sam’s story continues with another job and developing feelings between Sam and Fin. Emerson is crushing hard on Sam as well and we may be getting a new guild member in Ahura. These books are short so there’s no time for parts that drag, just lots of fast-paced action and plenty of snark from Sam.

I’m listening to the audios on Hoopla and the author does a good job with narration, although she speaks so slowly I need to speed it up to 1.5x just to sound normal. (I speed up most books I listen to, but usually more in the 1.25x-1.35x range.)

As for the intersex representation, there are times where Sam thinks things like “my weird body” but I feel like it’s more self-deprecating based on how they feel others perceive them and past rejections, Sam actually is fine with their body. I feel like Sam means they think this potential sexual partner will think they have a weird body, not that there’s something actually wrong with it. I don’t think the author means to say intersex people have “weird” bodies, but I tend to give authors the benefit of the doubt. I’d love to know how an intersex person feels about this though.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Damn that was awesome Sam finally gets laid. Curious how it'll all play out. Steadily making my way through all series. Can't wait to read more. JL

Attracted

Sam is so cool. They probably aren't everyone's cup of tea but I'm enjoying them. Snarky and aggressive attracts me I guess. I love how they interact with Fin, Emerson, and especially Theo. I am predicting that Ahura will join their guild eventually too.

Action, Adventure and Romance

This book follows on from the first in the series with only a short gap of time. Fin and Sam are dating and they are both enjoying taking it slowly. Emerson has a crush on Sam to which they are oblivious and it’s really sweet how a giant half-ogre can be so shy.

Things are ticking on along nicely when Sam gets a visit from Theo, the new head of the city and he requests that they track down the group of people that tried to kill him for a huge sum of money. Sam being skint decides that working for a human isn’t *that* bad. When Fin and Emerson find out, of course they demand to be allowed to help.

This book builds on the relationships between the guild members both emotionally and professionally. There is plenty of action as Sam and co take on the group that tried to kill Theo, but I enjoy the way we are shown more of each character just as much as the use of rocket launchers in the action portion of the story.

I’m so glad that Kaye Draper writes these books quickly, as it means you don’t have to wait long for the next in the series. I know the next one is on Amazon, so I’m going to see if I can download it now.

The more I read of this series the more I want. I think this book is terrific and went by too fast for comfort, making me dread the thought: “what if the author thinks it’s not appreciated and decides to end it after that one?!”. So I decided that for once I’d show my appreciation and write a review.

I love how we got to see things from Emerson’s and Fin’s perspectives and not just from Sams. I hope to see more of that in the coming books, more of the backstory of them. I would also love some more descriptions of the city as well as the outskirts because I’m a sucker for imaginary environments done good. And I also enjoyed how Sam is such a badass but still so relatable: they’re insecure in themselves but confident in their job skills, they hate being vulnerable but would do anything for their loved ones, they see and feel a bloody and hateful world throw crap at them and others like them and yet realizes that good things must be treasured.

I haven’t been this excited about a book series since I discovered Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake-series and that series is my ultimate favorite when it comes to urban fantasy RH. It might have good competition now. Well done, miss Draper! I look forward to the next one!

This is a solid continuation to Sam’s story, action-packed and filled with answers to some questions while teasing even more questions that need answers. Draper also expands upon her world-building and introduces an intriguing political element to the plot line. I look forward to seeing how Sam and their “guild” play a role in Theo’s machinations.

The romantic element picks up a notch here, as well, as Sam becomes more comfortable with their relationship with Fin. It will be interesting to see the fallout of a certain series of events that included a significant amount of alcohol. However, I do appreciate that it’s not entirely clear who else will end up in Sam’s “guild” (quotations used here for an entirely different purpose) by the end of this series.

I read books 1 and 2 of this series back to back, and, alas, I’ll have to wait for book 3. I’m currently enjoying two different series by Draper during a global pandemic, so now is the time to support creators and cross your fingers for their continued well-being!

Sam is in uncharted water, having others to care about is different for them. Sam is offered a job looking for the people who tried to interfere with them in the unicorn hunt and set up their new acquaintance to die. Unfortunately Sam's two guild mate's are taken and sam needs help getting them. Sam's new friend seem determined to help.
