‘De zon schijnt vadaag’ – The sun is shining today’

Lingo Mastery continues on its important mission – to make Dutch more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘Dutch is spoken by 17 million people in the Netherlands, 6.5 million people in Belgium, and approximately another million people living around the world. Whether you’re living in the Netherlands or Belgium right now, moving there soon, or just want to learn the language to speak to your Dutch-speaking friends and family: this phrase book is an excellent tool for beginners, as well as intermediate learners, to support their language learning journey. Vocabulary is the foundation to learning a foreign language. Being able to recognize words in the language you’re learning, both written and spoken, is the basis of eventually mastering the language, even if you don’t understand the grammar constructions being used in the sentence…Context is the key…the four best skills – listening, reading, speaking and writing.’

After their success teaching Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Japanese and Russian, now they turn to teaching Dutch! And it works. After some valuable grammar notes, the vocabulary is presented from articles, to nouns, to verbs, pronouns, prepositions, etc. The phrases that follow highlight the intended words and place them in context – a very easy way to remember the new Dutch words. Taking it slowly, step by step with practice, Dutch words become accessible!

The technique is solid and the lessons well taught. This is a very fine introduction to Dutch vocabulary that may arise when you visit the Netherlands or Belgium, appropriate for all age levels.

Learning new vocabulary without context is a thing impossible to me – so, I find Lingo Mastery’s approach and learning methods to learn and review most helpful.

The sample phrases are clear and easy to understand. There is exactly one sample phrase for each Dutch word, which is fine as long as it has one single meaning, or near synonyms thereof. However, there are words that can have two or more totally unrelated meanings, e.g. in

50 - wel [n, adv, conj] water source; certainly; sure; anyway; (also used for as the emphatic do/"does, did)
Mijn moeder denkt dat ik de koekjes wel heb gegeten, maar dat is niet zo!
My mother thinks I did eat the cookies, but that’s not the case!

606 - hoop [n, v] hope; heap; heaps of (many); to hope (1st and 2nd person - present tense)
De boer had een hele hoop sinaasappels geoogst.
The farmer harvested heaps of oranges. "

1591 - stoppen [n, v] fuses; to mend clothes; to stop (infinitive and plural subjects - present tense)
De auto’s stoppen bij het stoplicht.
The cars stop at the traffic lights

1712 - plots [n, adj, adv] plots; sudden(ly)
Het ging plots regenen!
It suddenly started to rain!

I would have loved to have separate sample phrases for those, so this is something that might be worth adding to this textbook.

All in all, a good and useful textbook for me. I will definitely be looking out for further learning material by Lingo Mastery!

This book is an essential to any person at the beginners stage of learning Dutch. Learning words in context teaches not only the meaning of the word but how the word is used in a sentence. The simple layout of the book, sentence followed by the translation, also teaches sentence structure plus a whole lot of different words as well. I use the book constantly as reference material and would recommend this book to any person starting to learn the Dutch language
