Yuna's exploits as an adventurer (and her memorable outfit) have made her a celebrity around town. As the so-called "Bloody Bear's" legend grows by leaps and bounds, the former shut-in receives an intriguing offer through the adventurers' guild--a local lord named Fochrosè has a quest he wants her, and only her, to take on!
Following on from volume 1, more adventures of a girl in a bear outfit transported to a fantasy world. I enjoyed it, but I'd still have to say I prefer the anime.
*Some minor spoilers may follow*
Interestingly, there are more differences between the book and the anime this time. The most noticeable is that Yuna meets Lord Cliff and Noa before she encounters the black viper in the book. In the anime, they did a slightly awkward hook episode as episode one where Yuna takes on a quest which is supposed to be too difficult for her, killing a massive snake. The way it's framed, it appears that this is Yuna playing the game rather than Yuna in the fantasy world. Episode two takes us through the isekai process; it's not an entirely uncommon device: 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil' uses the same trick. We then get an episode later where they're harvesting the snake which Yuna has roasted between episodes. Then Yuna is asked to go see the local lord. In the book, we have the lord, then the viper. This puts the discovery of eggs right before Yuna starts her egg business. I get the feeling that the author writes like I used to: not quite sure what's going to happen next until writing it. The afterword bears this out to some extent.
Yuna also comes across as less arrogant in the anime...
Whatever, it's an enjoyable, easy read. Next volume takes us to the capital, which should be fun.
The writing is pretty simple, and there is not much conflict, but it is fun to explore this world with Yuna and watch her become more open. Most of the chapters from others point of view added nothing; they were rehashes. The one exception to this was Cliff Focherosé's chapter that continues the story on. Overall, this was a fun read.
The continual interruption of the story with chapters that simply regurgitate those that immediately precede them is very disruptive. There are some entertaining parts, but there is not a lot new here in power fantasy isekai storytelling.
This is my second time through Vol. 2. This time with the excellent audiobook, narrated by Marissa Lenti and published through Seven Seas Siren. We have shelved the light novel series through our local rural library and I want to see if we can get the new audiobooks into circulation.
The first half of this volume drags a lot because of several chapters that retell the preceeding chapter from another character's perspective. Volume 1 did this a bit, but they were spaced out enough that it felt more like a recap, but in volume 2 most of the recaps come immediately after the chapter they're retelling, which made it a bit of a drag.
The book really picks up in the second half though, with Yuna using her talents to perform various acts of philanthropy and help out different characters in town. Since she's more established in this volume, we really get to enjoy the deepening friendships she has with other characters, and how the world starts to get used to her as she gets used to the world. Near the end there are some perspective-flip chapters that really do add value to the existing story and I particularly liked Cliff's chapter which was basically a self-contained short story that explains something Yuna had noticed earlier, but didn't get to confront herself.
As far as the digital edition, I read the Japanese version and can't say what may or may not be included in the English kindle versions, but there was a sizable amount of bonus material after the main chapters were over, including a three chapter short story that follows up on a bonus in Volume 1, and two different chapters from other characters that are also worthwhile because we learn more of their perspective and thoughts rather than having the same events repeated.
3.5 - rounded up because I think it is slightly better than the first book which I gave 3,5 stars as well (3 stars).
That said while it is a cozy enjoyable read to me, it's if I am honest just a middle of the road read for me. So I am sorry to say I don't get the hype about this one and why it's rated so high. Don't get me wrong I don't think it's horrible or bad at all, I just don't think it is amazing. It's just a series I would read if I could borrow it all from the library or audible had all of it as free listens when you're subbed. Personally I wouldn't go out of my way and buy it, maybe in manga format (I think I saw it had a manga). I might like that version more. So yeah if my library ever gets the volumes or audible adds vol. 3 for free or something I will throw this series into the mix for when I want a shorter cozier read. So for now it's a soft DNF since 'm not interested in buying it.
There isn't much forward progression of the plot other than Yuna discovering more of her skills and forming more ties to Crimonia. It's light-hearted and fun to read. The main detractor is really the constant recap of previous chapters from the point of view of the other characters. I do enjoy reading the change of perspective but their placement in the story somehow halts the momentum of the story. It would have been better placed at the end as a sort of side story so the flow doesn't keep backtracking.
I like this light novel. It’s not really for kids, despite what you might think. There’s mention of some very adult themes, so be forewarned. The action is fun, the banter is fun, and Yuna is just trying to make her world a better place. Preferably without being noticed. Normally, I like multiple POV books but we would get alternate views on things long after they happened and I didn’t enjoy that as much. Otherwise, a quick, easy, low-stakes read.
Genuinely just boring. MC is a do nothing and half the book is just recounting events from the perspectives of children with less depth than a sheet of paper. The only event that happens, the MC forces the an objectively worse outcome that attempts to justify why tax money shouldn't be spend on parent-less children and forces an entire orphanage to work for her. All this being said, it's still one of the easiest books/series to read in Japanese, so I will be reading volume 3 in the future.
I soft DNF'd this book years ago when I was using it as language learning fodder. It's a good book for easy word retention.
Much like book one in the series, a lot of the story was a rehash of what had just happened in the previous chapter (or even a few paragraphs ago which is very frustrating!). Overall, not very interesting to me, especially because Yuna feels really overpowered and arrogant sometimes, so I don't even feel like rooting for her.
Probably won't read another book from this series unless I was really bored and needed to warm up for harder reads.
My favorite line in the novel: What did you come by to the merchant guild for? This novel dips into the 'tell the same thing from a different POV' well too often. A perfect example of tell, don't show. Yeah. I'm not going to read anymore in this series.
A bit better than the first volume, notably by having the skill window only at the beginning, and not repeated every few chapters. Fina's chapters still don't add much, but they're finally giving a bit more of her perspective. Overall, still a very light light novel, fun, nice and easy to read.
This was fun. I love the anime and wanted more of the story. I’m very excited because this series has 14+ books! I’m just waiting for the next books to arrive in the mail… Can’t wait to read more.
Really enjoyed this. Much more going on with how Yuna is integrating with her town. Loved the magic use in this book. Not the biggest fan of the alternate PoV chapters, but there aren't too many.
I honestly wasn’t expecting this one to be so slice of life. I was expecting more adventure and fighting. Again not a bad volume just not what I was expecting.
