Southern Beach Mysteries #1

The Manatee Did It

Rate this book
Jewel Mantelle has never lived in the South, much less on the coast, so moving from Chicagoland to the historic North Florida coastal town of Sophia Island seems like just the adventure to fix her marriage. However, when she arrives she finds that it’s awfully hot and humid there and that these Southern folks really like to hug.

Her husband’s past on the island includes a creaky old house in the historic district and lots of nosy relatives he’d forgotten to mention. When one of the Mantelle cousins turns up dead, Jewel needs something she’s never really had before — friends. As her lunch bunch puts on their detective caps to get to the bottom of this murder, Jewel discovers that she may get more than she bargained for out of Sophia Island.

THE MANATEE DID IT is a clean and cozy beach mystery set in a historic small town. It’ll keep you turning pages well after bedtime and slathering on more sunscreen to get a few more poolside pages in.

“A new voice in Southern Fiction” is how a recent reviewer labels Kay Dew Shostak’s debut novel, "Next Stop, Chancey".

After being raised in a small-town in Tennessee, Kay lived around the country in a variety of settings. Taking a look at the familiar and loved from new perspectives led Kay to see, and then write about, the absurd, the beautiful, and the funny in her South.

After publishing several stories in compilation books and spending a few years in journalism, Kay wandered into writing fiction and found it hard to leave. She currently is working on the fourth book in the Chancey series and living in Fernandina Beach, Florida with her husband.

The characterizations never rung true in this novel. Newly moved to the North Florida coastal town of Sophia Island, Jewel Mantelle has her first lunch date with a group of ladies, ending with the discovery of a body. Very passive for a main character in a mystery novel, Jewel is goaded into investigating the murder by her lunch companions, primarily Annie - whose several adult children, rather conveniently, hold lots of clues about the murder victim and his activities on Sophia Island. "Now, Jewel, I know you don't know us that well, but we think we can help. You know. Help figure all this (the murder) out" Annie tells Jewel after her husband has been taken to the police station to be fingerprinted. It feels like Jewel is railroaded into solving the mystery by her lunch companions, who take turns showing up at her home at pivotal moments. Jewel's passivity extends to her relationship with her husband, a suspect in the murder. I can't really see why her lunch companions are so invested in helping her since this is her first luncheon. We're never told why she was invited to join the group - does every woman who moves to Sophia Island get invited to join the group or is Jewel special in some way? Ultimately, the revelation of the murderer is also problematic. Due to the connection between the murderer and the victim, I just don't buy it.

Picked this up as a vacation read while visiting Amelia Island and really enjoyed it. Cosy beach murder mystery centered around fictional Sophia Island that is heavily based on Amelia Island. The main character is new to town and joins a ladies luncheon to make friends. All retiree’s, they quickly turn small talk and town gossip into clues to help solve a murder investigation after finding a body in the harbor.

With fun quirky characters, The Manatee Did It is a fun beach or poolside read.

I wanted to jump into the pages of The Manatee Did It by Kay Dew Shostak and be a part of Annie’s gang.

Jewel Mantelle and her husband have moved to Florida after her husband inherits a decrepit old mansion from his great aunt. They didn’t expect to be caught up in a murder shortly after their move.

The author developed characters that felt like your own personal friends. The main character was Jewel, but Annie took over the persona and the book. One of the best fictional characters I have ever read. Lucy, Tamela, and Cherry rounded out the group. The secondary characters were written just as well and were satisfyingly worked into the plot.

The plot itself was a typical cozy murder, but the author’s writing style was cheeky and fun. I laughed out loud through most of the book. She produced a chemistry between the characters that added immensely to the enjoyment of the book. The book grabbed me from the very first line and not once did it lag. The plot was easy to follow and the ending was rewarding.

This was book 1 in the Southern Beach Mysteries. Book 2, The Sea Turtle Did It, is already out, and Book 3, The Shrimp Did It, is coming out the end of October 2020. I can’t wait to continue reading the series and see how all the characters grow.

Thank you to Kay Dew Shostak for making this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️book available for free during a facebook event.

“The Manatee Did It is a clean and cozy beach mystery....” This statement says all you really need to know. You feel like you are apart of the gang as they meet for lunch and discuss the latest clues. If you’ve ever been to “Sophia Island”, or even if you haven’t, you’ll be able to walk with Jewell as she gets to know the area and her new friends. This would fit right at home on Great American Family network.

I came across this book at The Book Loft in Fernandina Beach, FL while visiting the area. The Southern Beach Mysteries Series was there and I opted to get the first one “to see how I would like it”. Half way through I ordered the other two. I can’t wait for the turtle and the shrimp to arrive in a couple of days. And the fourth when it comes out.

Just go ahead and get them all....

What I liked:
1. Main character is real, she is going through stress of being a recent empty nester and marital difficulties and finding friends in a new stage of life. Very relatable.
2. Smooth narrative, weaving the community, side characters and suspects in seamlessly
3. Believable actions and dialogue
4. Audio version is also very good

What I didn’t like: the beach theme could have been brought in more since the series is called “southern beaches series

This was such a cute and easy to read mystery! I really connected with Jewel being that she was new to Sophia Island and trying to learn the ins and outs of a new town, alone. I love the little bond that the other characters, especially Annie, brought to the story and how they acted as detectives to figure out the murder.

The best part was knowing that this was based off the town I live in! Being able to visually see the settings and know what locations were being described made it easier to feel as if I too was alongside the fun!

Secret passages and bigger secrets

Very good read with middle-aged ladies solving a murder. So much goes on but it is easy to keep up. Delightful characters bring this story to life. Love these mystery solving ladies "clubs". These ladies are smart and funny. With deep connections to all in this small town, they have information at their fingertips, often before the police! Luckily they have Each other to keep them safe in dangerous situations. Excellent read!

Okay read

This was a nice, clean book, but to tell you the truth, it was slow. I skipped through several chapters. I was also disappointed with the ending. Things were left up in the air. Not sure I'll read anymore.

A move to a new town,a house with a lot of history a husband who is distant and a fun group of new middle aged girl friends what more could you want in a book? Of course wonderful plotted out mystery. I just love the towns and the Characters that Kay creates. Each of her books leaves me feeling relaxed, smiling and so, so glad that she writes series so I always have something to look forward to with folks I am comfortable with in a town I always enjoy.

It started a bit slow, and there are a LOT of characters right off the bat. Lots of people to remember. I love anything Kay does though, so I kept reading and it was well worth it.

Although I love the group of ladies that befriended our heroine Jewel, they aren’t quite enough to make up for a convoluted plot such as this. I don’t know how many characterless are on the story but it’s enough to keep me looking backward for a reminder of who they all are!

The final wrap up seems rushed and unbelievable.

I recently listened to the audiobook version of The Manatee Did It, by Kay Dew Shostak, and enjoyed it immensely. The story is intriguing and it is filled with lots of fun characters. Best of all, the narrator Suzanne Barbetta did a fabulous job with all the characters voices and accents.

The Manatee Did It is a cozy mystery set on a Florida barrier island. The book has likable characters and a believable mystery. The conclusion with the quick confession was a bit unbelievable, but overall it is a fun read.

Since I live near the coast of Florida I could really relate to the setting in this book. And the ladies in this book are about my age. The book provided fun and intrigue and left me wanting more of my new found friends.

Let's get the title out of the way first. Though catchy, "The Manatee Did It" is a lie. The only "manatee" that appears in the book is an illusion. The narrator and hero, Jewel Mantelle, spots what she THINKS is a manatee at the city marina one day. But when she looks closer, she realizes it's not a manatee -- it's a dead body.

The dead man turns out to be one of her husband Craig Mantelle's nefarious cousins, and he's been killed by being hit over the head with a heavy margarita pitcher. Because her husband was down at the docks that day to meet with the dead man and then lies to the police about it, he becomes the cops' prime suspect in the killing.

Jewel, who just moved to Sophia Island from the Chicago area, meets a bunch of women of a similar age who wind up becoming effective amateur detectives to help get to the bottom of what happened. It helps that they all know the small Florida beach town so well and know pretty much everyone in it.

Some of their detecting efforts are fun or even silly, but some of the plot is serious, too. Jewel and Craig's marriage is on the rocks because they communicate so poorly with each other and his constant avoidance of discussing what happened and what's going on makes him look even more suspicious.

In the end, Jewel solves the case thanks to a secret eavesdropping spot she learns about from one of the women's mothers, and then nearly gets killed but is saved by the loudest and most boisterous of her friends. All in all it's a good, old-fashioned cozy mystery -- but I have to admit, the title bothered me. Where's the Manatee???

Wish we'd really seen a manatee!

Craig and Jewel have just moved into the house he inherited from his "crazy" Aunt Cora in Florida. Craig is either away on work projects, at work, or in his office doing work related things. I don't know when he and his wife, Jewel, found time to try so many of the local restaurants. Jewel is becoming a much more social person. She's become involved in a ladies' group that meets frequently, officially and unofficially. The lady she meets with most often is Annie, who has a son on the police force and a daughter in real estate. Her other children are also in useful positions and businesses around town. While Annie's policeman son is busy investigating Craig for a relative's murder, Annie and the ladies are even busier investigating for the same murder using all their personal connections and keeping the telephone ☎️ busy updating Annie between meetings of the group. Bad timing has Craig and Jewel's marriage falling apart at the same time, so their communications are out of wack. The author draws the tension out to the final page to reveal the killer and the why's and wherefore of it all. Recommended.
UPDATE: Since finishing the series, I am even more enthusiastic about recommending these books. I have totally enjoyed these stories.

First in a new series. Jewel Mantelle moves to (fictional) Sophia Island, Florida because her husband Craig has inherited an old mansion from a "crazy" aunt with whom he used to spend summers. Though this was supposed to be a retirement plan, Craig returns to work and is hardly around. Luckily Jewel meets a ladies lunch group of retirees, who become new friends. When a relative of Craig's is murdered ,  the ladies investigate.
I enjoyed the Golden Girls vibe. Though it's a bit hard to keep track of so many characters. Annie is the only one that really made an impact, with her many children providing helpful clues.

Welcome to Sophia Island where new resident Jewel Mantelle has been invited to join some of the local ladies for lunch at a restaurant located at the town marina. What could possibly go wrong?

The discovery of a dead body quickly cements their newly formed friendship as they are all determined to find out what happened to the deceased man. They unite in their desire to seek out information…especially when they learn that Jewel’s husband has become a suspect.

Ms. Shostak does an excellent job of keeping the story from getting too heavy or depressing as she easily mixes in bits of humor that make the reader smile. Her characters are well rounded and quickly become very real. The setting is well described and is a town you would like to visit.

I look forward to reading more about life on Sophia Island.

Cozy, short, mystery read. I enjoyed reading this because it's setting is based on an area near me. I liked the little "easter eggs" it had about the real island it's inspired by. It added excitement when I knew where or what was mentioned.
The first 50% is a slow climb to the actual putting clues together about the murder that happens, but it helps establish the relationship between Jewel and her new detective crew and the town dynamic.
I identified with Jewel on how she felt moving to this new place, never having experienced the South before, let alone a small town life.
I'm excited to see how the characters develop in the next books.

Jewel Mantelle finds herself living in her husband's late Aunt's Victorian mansion in coastal Florida. The mansion is in disrepair, as is Jewel's marriage, and in the midst of trying to "rehab" both, she is drawn into a murder mystery that has her husband smack dab in the middle of things. Jewel's "lunch bunch" friends are happy to help and are soon on the case.

I love cozies set in the South and in a beach setting. This series has it all - a mature main character who is relatable, a keep you reading mystery and a group of the most quirky and lovable crime solving buddies I've read.

Join Jewel & the "lunch bunch" for a fun mystery!

Small town ladies

A cute story with a murder and some local ladies being ‘detectives’. The story takes place in a Florida marina town. A woman and her husband decide to retire there because they’ve inherited an old mansion. Jewell, the wife, meets and is accepted into an older ladies group and finds friends, info and a love for the town. Lots happens when her husband, C.J. realizes his extended family is still living in the town. One of them is murdered and C.J. is a suspect. The local ladies work to discover the culprit.
Lots of local fun, activities and such show the small town vibe.
A fun story.

I enjoyed this book. I loved watching the characters' friendships evolve. Also, the action takes place not far from my home turf, so it was like reading about my friends. Southern hospitality is not a myth. A shy, out of place Midwesterner becomes the lady of house of a mysterious, old decrepit mansion. Her marriage isn't in much better shape. A group of local friends adopt her . when she discovers a dead body, they all become secret sleuths. Went right from this first in the series to the next book.

Any mysteries need solving?

Yes please. The book was packed with the female sleuths being curious 🧐 and actually examining the facts they all wind up with. Trying to prove a husband’s innocence, even though he has lied 🤥 a bit since the death of a cousin, proves to be one more chance to get caught in the act by the killer with the gun pointed at the wife. What’s one more to kill? As she said, she killed her own son! 🤦‍♀️ ugh
