1)The Male love interest's name is Rhys for starters

2)He is a Dragon Shifter..soooooo WINGS are involved

4)Dead sister whom he loved

5)Treats his mate like a Queen!!!

6)Is ready to sacrifice ANYTHING for her!!

Ancient Enemy by Katie Reus

2nd book in the Ancients Rising series. Better is read in series order but can be read as a stand-alone. Paranormal romantic suspense.

The world changed when dragons decided to take over the world. After the battles were over, paranormals greatly outnumbered humans and now rule the government and the rebuilding cities.
Rhys is searching for the witch that killed his sister. His plan is revenge and death even if he doesn’t survive. Dallas left her coven years ago because she didn’t like the lies and dark magic. They work together to help rebuild New Orleans and track down the missing humans and vampires.

Fast moving and suspenseful. Great chemistry and sexy interactions.
Love dragonling Willow. So adorable.

I appreciated and enjoyed the “play” time they all engaged in. Realizing your troupes need down time just as much as discipline is critical .

Excerpt:
“He’d never seen this ridiculously playful side of her before, not fully. And he liked it. Despite the tension that seemed to live in his shoulders, he couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face.
“Is King turning down a challenge?” Marco, one of his youngest wolves, walked out of the shadows in human form, a mischievous glint in his eyes. He was a warrior, not a beta, but he wasn’t challenging King.
“I’m pretty sure he did.” Aurora’s grin was infectious.
Sighing, King stripped off his jacket and tossed it to Marco. “Let’s do this.”
“So what’s the challenge?” Marco asked.
“It’s not actually a challenge,” Aurora said as they started across the lawn where various shifters were patrolling or just relaxing. “He’s just going to deflect my lightning bolts with his magic sword to blow off some steam.”
Marco let out a low whistle. “Oh, hell yeah. The whole pack will want to watch this. I’m gonna take bets on how many he can hit.”
“You gotta do better than that,” Aurora said. “It should be more along the lines of how many he can hit per minute. Otherwise that’s just sad because you know he’s going to hit all of them.” “I’m right here!” King said, even as he fought another grin. When he was around her, he felt decades younger. He didn’t have the weight of his people, his city, on his shoulders. He was just King.”

5 - "She’s mine to protect…" Stars!

This month has been one of the best I have had for a while in terms of reading, and Katie’s second instalment of her Ancient’s Rising series is the best book I have read from her in a while. This is an author that nails PNR in my opinion and Ancient Enemy will go down as one of my all time favourite stories from her.

Two words –

BABY DRAGON

I fell in love with dragonling Willow straight off, think Dumbo, but rather than big ears, it was big wings this baby cutie was dealing with, her interactions with Rhys were totally adorable, and I could probably write this review solely about it if I let myself!

"I’ve been angry and bitter for a long time…"

Witch; Dallas is bought to New Orleans by Alpha; King, as life starts to move on from The Fall he is looking long term into ways they can grow food and become more self-sustainable. Willow a farmer herself has an affinity for plants and nature, so has the expertise he needs to try and get things moving along, her magic hands don’t hurt either. But before she can really start to get on with things, it comes to light that Vampires and humans are disappearing, and she may not be the only witch in town.

His goal was vengeance. He wanted to use her. Not… anything else. She would do well to remember that.

I love me a dragon shifter, and Rhys was as sexy as his brother Lachlan was in the previous book, but as I’ve already mentioned it was his interactions with Willow, that edged him ahead in the overall favourites contest. His alpha protectiveness of Dallas ticked all my boxes too, hers as well!

He wanted more normal nights with her… Days, nights and everything in between…

King and Aurora's relationship ticks along a bit more in this one too, I still hope that the author gives them their own book at some point in the future though, as I want more one on one time with them both. I loved this story, everything was just perfect, and I cannot wait for Mikael and Avery’s book Ancient Enforcer to release in January, bit of a wait, so I will try to be patient…

Willow completely stole the show in this one. She was so adorable that even all the characters in the book couldn't get enough of her. I hope we see more of her in the upcoming books in the series.

Now that I have my love for Willow expressed, I really did love Dallas and Rhys, as well. Dragon shifters are my favorite shifters to read about. To me they seem to be the unicorn of the shifter world. I find that Katie Reus really does them justice.

Rhys is a bit grumpy and has a one track mind on vengeance, so I loved seeing how Dallas not only showed him there is more to life, but she was also was the road to give him closure. And Dallas? I loved her innate goodness. She could have easily become like the evil villain she was raised to be. Instead she never let the dark touch her.

I always love getting to see my favorite side characters again, as well as new characters. There is just a lot to love about this series.

I do love dragons.

In this one Rhys is desperately searching for the witch that drained and killed his sister.

He feels drawn to New Orleans. When he first meets Dallas he fights the attraction he feels. After all she’s a witch. He soon realises she’s nothing like the dark witch he’s searching for. But can he rise above centuries of hate.

This is another good read. I love all the characters and the world that’s been created. And don’t get me started on the cutie that is Willow.

By only real problem. And this is a pet hate of mine. It just annoys me when one characters sits on something. They know it’s going to come out and yet they push it back. For a large part of the book I was dreading the repercussions of this.

But like I said it’s an enjoyable read and I can’t wait for the next one.

Audiobook: Narrator - Lauren Ezzo

I really enjoyed this narrator. She did an amazing job with both the male and female characters. Add in the fact there is a diverse list of secondary characters involved in this story as well and she was able to give them all a bit of individuality, and I jumped immediately into her performance and didn’t want to leave.

I can’t get enough of this world and all its amazing characters!

Rhys’ hunt to find his sister’s killer takes him to New Orleans where he meets Dallas and her baby dragon. Prejudiced against witches, he’s on his guard with her as he’s assigned to help her with a project prescribed by their Alpha. Being a Katie Reus book, it doesn’t take long for his protective instincts to kick in and what follows is all kinds of deliciousness that was exactly what my day was in need of!

Dallas was perfect for Rhys. She was sweet and gentle with everything good about her. But when the situation warranted it, she was more than capable of doing what it took to take care of what was at hand. I loved learning more about her the further into the story I read. I especially loved her protection over her baby dragon as it shined a light on what was truly in her heart.

Animated GIF

It’s no surprise I loved Rhys and all his protective and possessive actions regarding Dallas. Watching him morph from a shifter who was after revenge to one who could think of nothing but his woman’s welfare showcased how he was incapable of doing anything but following those traits.

Image may contain: one or more people

This has several plotlines running through it, some joining together and others setting up what these secondary characters will be facing in the future. All of it pure perfection. There was never a moment that this became boring or bogged down and the steam level was dragon scorching. Not sure who we get next, but I’m already greedy to get it into my hands.

ARC received for review

Another yummy dragon shifter comes out of hibernation. Rhys is Lachlan's brother (Ancient Protector) and is looking for their sister's killer. Dallas is a witch with information he needs to find the killer. Lots of other peeps from the previous book, and a real baby dragon help out along the way. I really like how we knew her secret and weren't left wondering the whole book what it was. Lots of drama, action and sexy times along the way plus peeks into King and Aurora's relationship.

I'm guessing from the title of the next one that it's not going to be King and Aurora's story, but Rhys' friend Mikael (who we meet in the first book and his "mate" Avery).

I'm in love with a dragon... or two

A year ago, Rhys awoke from his hibernation with the same goal in mind - find justice for his sister's murder. She was deceived by a friend, a witch who took her life to extend her own. He has a real hatred for witches and is willing to give his life for vengeance. Dallas is a powerful witch who has never really belonged. She's used to being rejected for what she is, but Rhys quickly realizes that this witch may just be the exception to the rule.

There was so much to love about this book! I enjoyed that although it was about Rhys's hunt for justice, it incorporated so many other things such as rebuilding after The Fall, mating and courtships, the bonds of family and friends, and finding love when it seemed impossible.

I was a bit overwhelmed with Dallas's constant and repetitive thoughts when it came to being rejected and to Rhys's eventual departure. I didn't count, but she mentioned the inevitability of Rhys leaving her oodles of times. Aside from that, or maybe even despite that, I was quite entertained by this story. I adored these characters and I'm eager to discover more about the ones I briefly met. I need to know more about King (the Alpha of New Orleans) and the woman he's fascinated with, Aurora (a phoenix shifter). I'll definitely be reading the previous book of this series to completely immerse myself in this world. It was that good!

Ancient Enemy is book 2 and another enjoyable read in this series. Rhys went into hibernation after the death of his sister at the hands of a witch with only one thing on his mind vengeance. When he wakes the need for vengeance is still really strong and he is pulled to New Orleans where he meets Dallas. Let's just say he is a little disgusted by his attraction because yes you guessed it Dallas is a witch. Overall everything was there for me to love this book, Rhys was sweet, possessive and very protective, Dallas has such a big heart and she longs for family, Willow her pet dragon is adorable and I loved the addition. Now with that said I felt something was missing from the story and I didn't like the fact that Dallas waited the entire book to tell Rhys the truth. I can't wait for book 3 and I really hope this series continues because I'm really looking forward to King's story.

{Many thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.}

3.5 but I rounded up to 4 on this one

This is my first Katie Reus book and I really enjoyed it even though I would urge any future readers to read the previous book first. There were certain parts where I felt a bit lost because so many new characters were introduced at once and it was lot to take in.

Anyway!

So this is the story of Rhys, a dragon shifter who was awoken after a very long sleep. He wakes up with only one thing on his mind, revenge against the witch who killed his sister. His plan brings him to New Orleans, and there he meets another witch, one who is beautiful, and kind...and hiding a secret that could destroy their newly found relationship...

I've not read a paranormal in a while so it took me a while to get used to this but I loved our pair of Rhys, the dragon shifter, and Dallas, the beautiful witch he falls for. There's a bit early on where he cooks for her and I pretty much swooned. Any hero who cooks is an instant win for me! He was so loving and caring toward her, not to mention very protective, in a very Alpha-growly way.

I felt so sorry for poor Dallas. She was so lovely and her relationship with Willow was adorable but she faces so much prejudice because of who she is. I adored how Rhys slowly made her realise that she was so much more. I wish we'd seen more of her regarding her powers because they were fascinating!

Now, I'm sorry but hands down my favourite thing about this book was not the romance, or the action, or the brilliant characters...but a baby dragon called Willow. I mean, she can't stand to be away from Dallas, she copies Rhys when they first go flying together, she hides behind her wings when she's scared or nervous...and she also puts her head through the window to wherever Dallas is sleeping because she can't bare to be apart from her. How could I not fall in love with all that adorableness??

I'll definitely be picking up the next book, and also the first one to catch up on what I've missed out on!

Ever since The Fall when a bunch of evil dragon shifters tried to take over and ended up killing and destroying a lot of people and property, the supernatural territories had taken over and human governments weren't really a thing anymore. Humans knew about supernaturals and now the good guys were trying to make things better and make up for the destruction their people had caused and were taking out the dragons that had caused all the problems to begin with.

Rhys had been asleep for a long time but when he woke, he wanted to get revenge on the witch that had killed his sister. But he comes across Dallas and can't help but feel a connection to her even though she's a witch and he should hate her. The fact that she has a pet baby dragon just intrigues him more. Willow the baby dragon is the cutest thing ever and I absolutely loved how she was a huge part of this story.

The King asks Dallas to go to different places in the city and see if she can start food gardens with her magic. After the city was practically destroyed he doesn't want there to be a food shortage while he's trying to rebuild the city. The King also sends Rhys to be her bodyguard while she is scouting the different areas. But Rhys is there because he can feel that Catta the witch that killed his sister is near and he wants Dallas's help tracking her down.

They get a big break when they come across a house that Dallas knows has something awful inside it hidden by witchcraft. She is hoping to rescue the kidnapped people but when she uses too much power to get in the house, Rhys protective instincts kick in when she passes out from exhaustion. I knew that these two would end up together when he went a little crazy seeing her so vulnerable.

Dallas and Rhys were so sexy together and make such a great couple. She's a witch and he's a dragon shifter which makes for some really fun times together. But Dallas has a huge secret and I didn't know if it was going to blow up in her face once Rhys found out about it. I really loved the ending to this book, it made me smile. I'm loving this series so far so I'll definitely be reading the next book.

Rhys is a grumpy dragon, fresh out of hibernation and still chasing the trail of a wicked witch who killed his sister many, many years ago. He’s in New Orleans, helping King’s pack reorganize the city while he chases down his own leads. He despises witches with a passion, so it was funny to watch him eat crow when he meets Dallas, a very sweet, very nice witch, who is hiding some big secrets. There’s two have attraction in spades and I loved how their relationship developed, but someone else stole all the pages she was on...Dallas has the CUTEST EVER pet baby dragon named Willow!!!

Seriously, if Willow doesn’t make you smile and laugh with her adorable antics and utter sweetness, you have a heart of stone! She’s like a cross between baby Dumbo and adorable baby silliness, flies like a drunken bumblebee, loves kisses and cuddles, and attaches immediately to Rhys-who definitely doesn’t have a rock hard heart!

Ancient Enemy was a love fest for this bookworm! The story took off immediately, leaving me buckling in and holding on for a merry ride! I loved all the dynamics in this story. Everything came together and felt effortless-the relationships, Rhy’s vengeance, the swoony romance, the battles, the sheer cuteness-sorry, plugging for Willow again- if vampires, shifters, cute baby dragons, and nasty witches getting their dues are your thing, do check this series out!

This was a really fun installment of an actiony, steamy series that always leaves me wanting the next book right away. The older the characters, the more fun we have with them adjusting to the new world and Rhys is no exception. I particularly enjoyed the witch heroine, Dallas, and her lovely pet dragon, who are joyful and powerful and just relatable, as much as a PNR character can be. I love coming back to this series, it’s such a nice escape. Recommend!

Two of my most favorite things to read about. DRAGONS and NEW ORLEANS!! This is a continuing series but could be read as a stand alone. Love the characters and the story line that Reus has created. And...... A baby Dragon too!!! Don't miss out on this great series. "A copy of this book was provided by KR Press, LLC via NetGalley with no requirements for a review. If pet baby dragon doesn't grab your attention then you just aren't the right reader for this book! We know of ancient dragon shifter Rhys from book one. What we don't know and his brother and clan chief doesn't know, is that he has been out of hibernation for awhile now. He has been hunting his sister's killer and his trail has him ending up in the US in Louisiana. In his quest, he meets Dallas and her pet baby dragon. Rhys is growly and protective of his family and wants nothing to do with Dallas.

the two are thrown together and end up fighting on the same side. Rhys admits he was quick to judge all witches as the same. Dallas is his mate and when he turns all that growly behavior into protecting her---sparks fly.

Lots of action again in this second book of the series. We see familiar characters from book 1 but you could easily read this as a stand alone. Loved the ending! Can't wait to see who baby brother ends up with!

Okay, this was too good. H is hell bent on revenge and hates the h's kind only to instantly fall putty in her hands upon meeting. I will always gobble that up!

What you'll get:
- Dragon x Witch
- An adorable dragon pet (!!!)
- H puts h above everything, even his revenge 🫶
- A badass witchy heroine
- Amazing friendships (esp the girls all being so supportive and loving of each other)
- Intriguing world building and side plots I'm so ready to read about (hello, King?)

Safety:
- 100% safe (no cheating, no OP)
- Both celibate for ages
- Mated at end

This was a cute, fast paced story. The world building wasn’t the best but this being my maybe second book from Katie Reus, I’ve noticed that’s her natural pace and depth.

I wish there were more details but I liked the world enough. Lovedddd Willow, such a cute dragonling! Especially when she communicates with Rhys and Dallas.

Interested to see King and Aurora and I can pretty much guess what their plot is going to be, very predictable.

One thing I didn’t love was Dallas’ switch from sad, mopey monologue to suddenly realizing she loves Rhys. She spent more time thinking of how she needed to tell him the truth, but will get to it later. How she knew this wasn’t going to last, he’d leave once his mission is complete blah blah blah. It got repetitive and so when she admitted she loved him, it was so out of left field.

I’ve not read Lachlan and Star’s story but even with that one paragraph at the end I can guess what the plot twist with them is, basically I’ve read it all in PNR at this point.

Still, I enjoyed Ancient Enemy! Hope Axel doesn’t continue to be a terrible flirt

Ancient Enemy focuses on Rhys, a recently awakened ancient dragon-shifter who is searching for his sister’s killer, a witch Rhys believes is in New Orleans. Dallas, a witch who is tasked with helping to rebuild the gardens and food sources in New Orleans, might be able to help Rhys find the witch that he’s hunting. But Rhys’s mission is sidetracked when King, the Alpha and leader of New Orleans, sends the pair to investigate missing vampires and humans.

When Dallas is called to New Orleans to help rebuild the city, her main concern is protecting her pet dragon. She likes her peaceful existence on her farm but is selfless and eager to help others. She doesn’t plan on helping to solve a case that might involve witches, nor does she expect to have feelings for the hunky dragon-shifter who has sworn to protect her. What will Dallas do when the case, and Rhys’s mission, point toward someone from Dallas’ past?

This is the second book in the Ancients Rising series, and it is just as action-packed and chemistry-laden as the first. With well-developed characters and an interesting premise, Ancient Enemy gripped me from the start.

Dallas and Rhys are both dynamically developed characters. Dallas is a powerful witch who has been a victim of prejudice her entire life. Witches are looked down upon by other paranormals, so she is used to keeping her distance from others. However, once in New Orleans, she finds herself surrounded by paranormals that are vastly different than she expects. Dallas is treated with respect and kindness, and it is great to see her slowly let down her defenses, especially with Rhys.

Rhys begins the story hate-filled and revenge-fueled. Rhys blames himself for the death of his beloved sister, and his only desire is to kill the witch who murdered her. However, as he spends time with Dallas and her adorable pet dragon Willow, he changes. He sees a future for himself, where before he only saw death.

I love that Rhys and Dallas give each other hope and show each other that they have a connection and a future worth fighting for. Their connection is strong, even though they both try to fight it, and their slow-building romance is fantastic! Furthermore, the depth of feelings that Rhys shows for Dallas is positively swoon-worthy! Rhys is adorably sweet when he plays with Willow, and his caring and protective nature when he takes care of Willow and Dallas transforms his broody personality.

We also get to see the sibling bond between Rhys, Cody, and Lachlan, which is fantastic. Though they haven’t been together in centuries, their connection is clear and lovely. I also love that, though these characters have strong sibling relationships, they don’t discount the wonderful family-like friendships that they have. They value their relationships and remain loyal to those that are important to them. It reminded me of the strong connection between Star, Aurora, and the rest of Star’s pack in the last book.

By the way, we do see Star, Aurora, and the crew in this story as well. It’s great to see Aurora gaining confidence and strength, and her slow-building relationship with King is amazing! I love that he has such deep feelings for her but holds back until she is ready. He’s more interested in her well-being than his own happiness and desires, and I love that! I’m totally rooting for this couple and hoping that their love story continues in the next book!

And then there’s Willow, Dallas’ lovable and endearing dragon. I adored her! She has a spunky personality that endears her to everyone, and her playful, sweet personality breaks the societal prejudices surrounding egg-hatched dragons. I love that she and Dallas are the opposite of what people expect, and they both, through their kindness and selflessness, show others that their prejudices are misguided.

In addition to all of the well-developed characters, the story is also dynamic. It’s a world where supernatural beings don’t hide. Recently exposed to the human world, they are adjusting to a new normal and attempting to rebuild the world after an epic battle brought much destruction. I like that in Ancient Protector, we see the destruction and break-down of the old world, the world where supernaturals had to hide who they were, and in this book, we see the aftermath and rebuilding of society. The way that this propels the plot and develops the characters while continually building an immersive supernatural world is impressive.

I highly recommend Ancient Enemy to readers that like shifter romances with unique characters and a fantastic romance. Plus, there are dragons!! Though this is the second book in the Ancients Rising series, it can be read as a standalone.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting my request for an arc of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion.

This is the second book in a new spinoff series set in the same world as the author’s Darkness series and the circumstances or setting picks up just about right where Ancient Protector (book 1, Lachlan and Star) ends. So though this book is about a separate couple, there are plot lines and scenes with certain characters that will be more meaningful if you read Ancient Protector beforehand. In fact, I’d highly recommend doing that first or you may get lost with all the characters you’ll meet/encounter if you jump in blind.

That being said, I LOVED this book a whole lot more than book 1 mainly because of one thing, one character — Willow, Dallas’s pet dragonling. She stole my heart. ❤️❤️❤️ I mean Dallas and Rhys, the MC’s, were great too. But really... Willow gets all my love. 😍🥰

But what did I think about the story? Hahahaha. Oh! It was great too! No, really. I loved that though this story could’ve have taken an angsty turn (because of Rhys’s and Dallas’s backstories), it didn’t!!! There were lots of great action scenes and lots of chemistry between the MC’s. Everything flowed smoothly and the pacing of events was fast, which I like.

Furthermore, I loved the chapters and scenes with King and Aurora. I’ve had my eye on them since book 1 and after reading this one, I’m even more eager for their book.

Lastly, this story sets things up nicely for book 3, which will center around Mikael and Avery, who also make an appearance in this one. That romance should be interesting too because Avery is a sweetheart and Mikael seems like this big grump. And that combination in MC’s personalities is a favorite of mine.

3.75 - 4 stars!

This is the second book in the Ancients Rising series and features Rhys and Dallas. Ancient Enemy was significantly better than the first book in the series mainly because I felt like we got a lot more of the main couple and their developing relationship.

Rhys is a dragon and has woken from his long sleep and plans on continuing his search of the witch that killed his sister. He intends on exacting revenge and killing this witch. This need for revenge has instilled a hatred of all witches.

Dallas is a witch that lives on her own plot of land and likes her solitary life. Well not completely solitary because she has a super cute pet dragon named Willow. Dallas left her coven because they were dabbling in the dark and Dallas is inherently good and only wants to do good.

King, the alpha wolf of New Orleans after the Fall enlists Dallas to help with growing gardens around the city and to discover who is taking and murdering shifters and humans in the area. Rhys ends up being her bodyguard/helper. Rhys doesn't like she is a witch but finds himself protective and possessive over her and quickly realizes he's made a huge error in judgement about Dallas. Dallas ends up promising Rhys that she will help him find the witch that killed his sister despite her own secrets.

I loved the way their relationship developed and I didn't think it took a backseat this time to the overall plot. While the steam was still lower than I like, I still liked it.

Will Rhys get his revenge? Will Dallas be able to tell Rhys her secret? Can they find their HEA?

Overall, I liked Rhys and Dallas....and cute little Willow.

Rhys is a dragon shifter who has been waiting thousands of years to get vengeance on the witch who killed his sister and he has a hatred for all witches. But when he accompanies some wolf shifters to invite a witch to help the Alpha of New Orleans rebuild the city, he is bowled over by the young witch Dallas and her dragonlet.

Dallas has rejected blood magic and spends her days improving the yields of plants and crops on her farm. Witches aren't well regarded by shifters and she tends to keep away from others, but the brooding dragon shifter somehow brings her a sense of peace.

PNR novellas are a bit like Marmite, you either love them or hate them. Yes they are formulaic, yes everyone is uniformly good-looking, if they have any defects they are of the adorable variety. There's lots of insta-lurve and fated mates etc, etc. If you don't like that sort of thing then don't buy this book. But if you do like a dragon shifter (and frankly, why wouldn't you) then this is a fun romp from an assured author who understands her genre. It's sexy, fun, fast-paced and the plot keeps you engaged from start to finish. While the novella format doesn't give the plot room to grow, it also helps to avoid the J.R. Ward-style repetition which other PNR novels fall into.

Loved it.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Bumped (belatedly) for release.

Rhys, an Ancient dragon shifter who has been awake and living in the U.S. for about a year, is hunting the witch who murdered his sister hundreds of years ago. He finds help from the most unlikely ally, Dallas, a witch with an affinity for nature. Dallas is used to being considered a pariah in the supernatural world, so she keeps mostly to herself, farming the land and raising her newly adopted pet dragon, Willow. She agrees to help King and Rhys find suitable land for farming and gardens, helping humans and supernaturals with food supplies.

Ancient Enemy is the second title in Ms. Reus’s series about dragon shifters and the rebuilding of New Orleans after the Fall, when supernaturals were forced out into the open and millions of people died. It is a standalone romance, and can be read without knowledge of the previous book; however, there are crossover characters, themes, and world-building that was established in the first book.

I enjoyed Dallas’s character a lot. Her pet dragon Willow is simply adorable. As a witch, Dallas grew up knowing hatred for what she is, but she’s made a home for herself, and she’s learning that she does have friends. King respects her and her talents, bringing her into the fold of his “inner circle.” I enjoyed watching Dallas grow to accept herself and being part of a team. I like that when Rhys immediately feels a connection with Dallas, he doesn’t hold the fact she’s a witch against her, and instead, opens up to her suggestions and kindness. He confides in her right away, asking for her help (and she offers) to find the witch who killed his sister.

That said, and although the pair goes on to work together, professing feelings and exploring intimacy, they continue to hide truths from one another. They build their relationship on half-truths, which frustrated me. It doesn’t prevent their HEA, but I found the constant “but she couldn’t tell him the whole truth” vibe wore on me after a while.

Ancient Enemy is another good story in the Ancients Rising series. I like the world, but I think I’m tiring of the fated mates, PNR genre. I would get lost in the story and then something would always pull me out. And I still struggle with the fact that we don’t see the human side of things - how they just let the “big bad scary” take over and run the world. Maybe it’s the current state of the world, but I can’t imagine humans going into the quiet so easily.

Rating: B- Liked It -- But I had a few small issues

This has several plotlines running through it, some joining together and others setting up what these secondary characters will be facing in the future. All of it pure perfection. There was never a moment that this became boring or bogged down and the steam level was dragon scorching. Not sure who we get next, but I’m already greedy to get it into my hands.

Rhys, an ancient dragon shifter who’s on a mission for vengeance against the witch who murdered his sister, senses he’s on the right trail in New Orleans. Agreeing to help King, the local Alpha, in exchange for spending time there, he’s assigned the task of guarding Dallas Kinley, a witch who’s helping King rebuild community after the Fall.

Uneasy having to spend time with a witch, Rhys wants to keep his distance, but Dallas is unlike any witch he’s ever known. She draws him in with her kindness and her love for her pet dragon, Willow. But when vampires and humans are suddenly abducted, Rhys and Dallas must work together to discover who’s behind it and find they must trust each other in order to come out of the fight alive.

Book 2 of the Ancients Rising series delivers more dragon goodness! I loved the chemistry between Rhys and Dallas, and the fun of pop in visits by members of the Darkness series! Plus, the catch up with Lachlan and Star. I cannot wait for the next installment of this series. Highly recommended!

With a hot broody dragon on a quest for revenge, a sweet but surprisingly badass little witch with secrets, and the most adorable baby dragon, Ancient Enemy was just a huge helping of amazeballs topped with awesome sauce.

Dallas and Rhys were everything I’d hoped they’d be. I felt for Rhys and his struggle between being drawn to Dallas and fulfilling his need to take out the evil witch. Dallas definitely had the Mary Sue thing going on which is usually a huge no for me, but there was so much more to her than all that sweetness, I didn’t care. Together these two were dynamite and when they finally combusted, it was freaking awesome.

But as badass and amazing as they were, it’s Willow who stole the show. Everyone needs their own little baby wild dragon. And if that was enough awesomeness, when you add in all the cameos from some of my favorite couples from the Darkness series, I found myself having all kinds of fun in my paranormal happy place. And believe you me, I did not want to leave it when I read that last sentence. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

The dragon, Willow, is so cool. I want a pet dragon! Rhys is awesome! He is brother to Lachlan. :) Rhys hates witches because one of them killed his sister. Dallas is a witch but is she different? Will Rhys get feelings for her? Read this book if you want to know.
