Neon Horizon #3

Bounty Hunter

Rate this book
When Marcie left the Blind Spot, she had just two things to accomplish: One, she needed to get lungs for Sal’s transplant. Secondly, she needed to set the Eye up for a new life in Prime City. Simple, right?

So when she gets offered the lungs but no guarantee for the Eye’s safety, Marcie chooses to delay her return home. To make good on her promise to the Eye, she has to remain in Prime City for several months so she can run five more bounties for Mads. It’s a small price to pay to set her friend up for life.

But each bounty reveals more about Mads and Prime City than she’d bargained for. Each bounty drags her in deeper to his web of crime and conspiracy, putting her at war with her own moral compass. And now she’s agreed to work for Mads, if she backs out, not only will she put her own life at risk, but her actions could also see the Eye killed.

Will Marcie manage to follow Mads’ orders without question? Can she witness corruption and exploitation without acting? It might only be a few months, but is a few months still too long to be one of Mads’ bounty hunters?

Bounty Hunter is the third book in the Neon Horizon series. If you like high-octane dystopian science fiction set in a cyberpunk landscape, then this book is for you.

“That’s fine with me. I was born to do this.”
With Marcie and the eye fighting their way through their last jobs for Mads and Marcie having made a ridiculous amount of enemies, will they make it to the end of their deal.

“Others would say you’re guided by a strong moral compass.”
This was an absolute thrill ride. Marcie really shines through as a brilliant caring person, willing to fight for the less fortunate and unwilling to allow the big corporations to thrive. The Eye and herself were exactly what was needed to start a change.

Full of action, intrigue, mystery and Edge of seat reading! I cannot wait for more 😁

Marcie had left the blind spot in order to get a set of lungs for her friend Sal and to gain a place in Prime City for The Eye, so she promised to become a bounty hunter for Madz, a powerful gangster with a finger in every pie of corruption. Once Marcie started to go on her bounty hunts she started to check on who the people she took in where, and she discovered that not all of them where evil and her conscience would not let her rest on this. Madz and some of his cronies on the other hand were really corrupt and needed to be looked into. Marcie's middle name should have been trouble because she seemed to be a magnet who drew this to her, but it was her high moral compass which got her into trouble as she was not able to turn a blind eye when the vulnerable in her corrupt society where targeted. She got into trouble with the gangs of both the crewcuts and the jocks as she taunted and stole from them, never once considering the trouble she was getting herself into. On the other hand there is Angelina, who also came from the Blind Spot and was working as a runner for Madz, she was doing this to earn a visa for her family to join her in Prime City after her two year stint was over. However, Marcie worried that Madz did not honour his promises and that none of them would leave Prime City alive once their last job was done. Madz needed to be stopped and if anyone could do this it was Marcie and The Eye. This science fiction thriller set in one of the most dystopic urban cities ever, is a real page turner and cannot be put down till the last line is read. This is the 3rd book in the Neon Horizon series and I cannot wait to read book 4. If ever there was a kick ass heroine, it definitely is Marcie.

Superb with strong character's and gripping storyline. The Eye and Marcie are now in Prime City. But have to carry out bounties for Mads in order to get Lungs for Sal and provide the Eye with a permanent home. But this was never going to be straight forward. There are new character's who I found myself rooting for. As with the other installments this one grips from the start.

Excellent third book in the series Neon Horizon! It is filled with excitement, suspense and high-tech gadgetry, but more than those great attributes, it has heart! I highly recommend it but sincerely suggest you read the books in this series in order or you will really miss out on some great action.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.

Marcie Hugo is the s**t! Book 3 of this ongoing cyberpunk saga and it is LiTeRaLly the best book series I've ever read. I'm not joking. I see that Book 4 will be a departure focusing on a new character but this author's writing is right up my alley so I'm up for it. Glad to see that Marcie's story continues in Book 5 though! Wish I could somehow pay the author directly for paperback copies instead of waiting months until Amazon decides to start printing them on demand.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Marcie’s plans to get Sal the lungs he needs and Help the Eye start a new life has been more complicated than she thought is would be. The rules in Prime city are both and simple, follow the rules by staying silent and don’t cross the wrong people. Unfortunately, Marcie has always followed her own idea of right and wrong in spite of what others tell her. In order to protect the Eye she becomes a bounty hunter for Mads, a man who has his hands in many nefarious situations in Prime City. Marcie sees the terrible situations many of the citizens are in and tries to alleviate some of the suffering, but at what cost?

Things in Prime City are not what they seem leaving the Eye and Marcie to unravel the mystery, but will they be in time? The bounties Marcie is sent on make no sense adding to their confusion.

This is an incredible and fast paced story allowing the reader into Marcie and the Eye’s lives as the struggle to understand what is really happening in Prime City. Along the way they meet many people who have their own goals some positive and some negative. I loved how in spite of everything around her Marcie maintains her own moral compass never faltering on what she believed in. Her struggle isn’t over yet and I will be waiting ti see how it all ends.

NEON HORIZONS is a excellent cyberpunk series about a number of technologically advanced city states that live in the aftermath of some undisclosed apocalypse. The first two books dealt with the young cyborg heroine, Marcie, as she struggled against the corrupt system of Scalia City then the crooked crime Lord Mads in Prime City.

Marcie is unusually optimistic for a cyberpunk heroine as she does her best to fight for justice as well as help the poor. It's a sharp contrast to your typical cyberpunk as they are primarily motivated by some combination of greed, revenge, or self-interest. Yes, they may do some good along the way but it's usually either a secondary concern or just a side-effect of the fact they're dealing with people much worse than themselves.

Honestly, it's kind of funny that Marcie is so selfless that she actually comes around to being selfish again. Her best friend is depending on her bringing a set of lungs to her so he can get off an artificial ventilator and she's delaying herself half a year to help a bunch of other people. On the other hand, this is for another friend so I don't completely blame her. Still, she routinely puts her frineds in danger out of a greater crusade against Mads.

Still, Michael Robertson doesn't hesitate to show the consequences of what Marcie's actions do as we get another heroine in Angelina who just wants to keep her head down as well as protect her family. I really sympathized with her plight as well as how Marcie's actions endangered her as well as others like her.

An excellent novel and one that I enjoyed a great deal.

Marcie has made a deal with crime boss Mads: she’ll get a set of lungs for her beloved friend Sal, but she’ll have to run five bounties in order to secure a free life for the Eye. The downside of failing to complete the contract is death. During her bounty runs, she makes the acquaintance of Angelina, another of Mads’ runners, who is very worried about her family’s safety, and Franco, who is trying to help poor disadvantaged people. She also runs afoul of two competing gangs the crewcuts and the jocks, who are trying to get all the bounties, especially on Mads’ runners. She becomes increasingly aware that Mads does not play fair; he does not want the runners to complete their runs, so he can avoid paying them at the end of the contract. Rather, he works to make them fail, so he can kill them and their families. Marcie wants desperately to bring him to justice, but he is firmly in control of all the city leaders. Is Marcie able to surmount all the dangers and complete her contract? Will she and her friends live to see freedom? The story is well-written with vivid descriptions and character development that makes the reader feel part of it. It was hard to put down, even for meals and sleep. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the next one in the series. I received an advanced copy of this book and enjoyed it thoroughly – I bought a copy to support this deserving author.

I have the first box set of this series and book three is an excellent continuation of the story.

Marcie is a very likeable character - brave, kind and determined. Her sense of justice is strong, so who better to infiltrate the corruption within Prime City?

Neon Horizon, in my opinion, reflects our world, where the cruel rich rule, governments and those in power are corrupt and the poor fight each other for survival because it's impossible to battle those in high places.

Very well-written with intriguing characters and a great plot makes this (and all the series so far) a compelling read.

Highly recommended.

Action packed and full of twists.
Initially I thought I knew where this third installment of the Neon Horizon series was going and how it would play out. But along came Michael Robertson with more twists than a good rollercoaster and pretty soon I realized I had very little of the story figured out. To say this episode was a compelling read is an understatement, this series has turned into stories you are very hesitant to put down until that final page is read. I receive an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
