Murder in the Mix #26

Spooky Spice Cake Curse

Rate this book
A baker who sees the dead. One too many suitors.
And a killer. Living in Honey Hollow can be murder.

My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead people. Okay, so I rarely see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety, who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owner’s impending doom.

It’s October in Honey Hollow. Halloween is at hand and there’s a horror around every corner. And then there’s that curse—and that body…

Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see the dead—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.

Living in Honey Hollow can be murder.

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. OH MY GOSH!!! Lottie is in DEEP this time!! The whole story was GOLD!!! Murder, and pregnancy, and curses. OH MY!!! Every time I read one of these books, I think Addison can't outsmart me, or leave me hanging like the previous book. This ending left me with so soooooooo many feelings. I laughed, I cried, I am still angry. And now I have to wait for the next book!! Spooky Spice Cake Curse opens so many doors, but where will they lead?
I promise you won't regret reading this book!! Addison Moore has truly outdone herself this time!!

This pains me to only give 2 stars. I love this series. But this book was just kind of ridiculous. I couldn't get through it fast enough. Very disappointing. I hope the next one redeems this series.

Lottie has gotten herself into it again.. I have enjoyed every book in this series. However I had some issues with this one... Spoiler kinda... The premise of the story is a good one.. Old, wealthy family, a curse, one story had an ancestor that made a deal with the devil to obtain the wealth and keep his descendants free from want but it came with a fee, the other story that he messed with the wrong daughter and really angered her witch mother and she placed the curse.. The problem I had with this storyline is that the author placed the start of the curse in the early 1900s... and the first to pay the fee was the patriarch that made the deal to begin with.. died when the ship he was on sunk and all souls were lost.. ok that could have been... however the way the story unfolded it just didn't ring true for the timeline. Later in the book, Lottie was doing research on the jilted daughter and her witch mother and she complained about not being able to find anything online relating to them because good records just weren't kept in the late 1900s... what?? Unless these stories are taking place in 2100something, the 1900s were only 20-30 years ago.. yeah.. that's what really clinched it for me.. I think the author meant to go with the 1800s and any good proof reader or editor worth their salt would have seen this little issue and pointed it out. The other issue.. it's getting more that just a little crazy with the pregnancy line... Here's hoping the next book in the series is better cause this one almost lost me.

Spooky, Creepy, and Unlike the Rest of the Series

Addison Moore's Spooky Spice Cake Curse, Murder in the Mix book 26, takes a turn for the supernatural as the books head into the second half of the 53-book series. It's got the same torn-between- two-lovers angst as the prior 25 books, but now Lottie is pregnant and the father could be Noah or Everett; her husband, Everett, has encouraged her to explore her relationship with Noah to get closure one way or another, not counting on Lottie's indecision. She's spent so many nights with both of them, the baby's paternity is really unclear, but since both men assure Lottie they'll be involved in her life and the baby's, she sees no reason to consult a lawyer as her OB-GYN suggests. Instead, they decide to see a counselor. Lottie wants to "get it over with" so she can tell her men what she's learned about the case of Ichabod Hearst, decapitated by a chainsaw in his own "haunted house". Used to discovering intact bodies with bullet holes and stab wounds, Lottie is horrified by Ichabod's grisly appearance and determined to find his killer. His ghost Great Dane, Duke, who has inexplicably grabbed Carlotta's romantic attention, vows to help--but gets distracted by Carlotta's pet names and large liquor selection. Yuck!
Ichabod was apparently subject to the family Curse, which kills or brings misfortune to family members who run afoul of the Hearsts. The Curse dates back to1908 and a supposed pact between Mr. Hearst and an evil human (a satanic priest?) to sacrifice his family for untold riches. A century later, Lottie discovers a less juicy but more realistic explanation: Ichabod refused to marry the mother of his child per his mother and grandmother's orders, leaving the illegitimate child hungry for revenge. In other child revenge news, little B&B ghost Lea gleefully chops Duke's head off and watches it reattach itself. Adult ghost Greer shouts into a microphone at Miranda's disastrous book reading, causing mass chaos with the audience, who can hear her! Are Lottie's powers growing?
Several times in the story, a mysterious woman in a lavender aura appears to Lottie, then vanishes. She's no one Lottie knows, but in a conversation with Fester, Ichabod's brother-in-law, Lottie learns that the "satanic priests" were actually transmundane women--they had the same power to see the dead Lottie has--and unlike justice crusader Lottie, they chose to use their powers for evil. The mysterious woman must be transmundane!
On Halloween night, the woman appears and warns Lottie that she's entangled herself in magic too deep for her own good. Having solved the mystery of Ichabod's murder, Lottie ignores the warning. Then the fires start. The Hearst house burns first, then Lottie's. Noah and Everett race into Everett's burning house to rescue Evie, only for the 16-year-old to show up from the neighbor's house where she was at a party. Noah is helped out of Everett's house by firemen; then Everett's house collapses on itself with no Everett in sight. As Lottie and Evie scream in grief, a disembodied voice says that the Hearst Curse has come upon them.
This book takes a downright creepy turn, and I'm surprised that Addison Moore, a Christian author, would write about curses and ghosts and bestiality (though Carlotta swears she and Duke only do regular petting and doggie kisses). Combined with the blatant theft of the names Ichabod (from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) and Fester (The Addams Family) and Moore's trademark misusage of words, this surprise venture into evil costs this book two stars. I still recommend it, but only to fans of horror fiction.

It's Halloween time in Honey Hollow, VT. Lottie Lemon, the town baker, is busy baking spice cakes, fall cookies and cupcakes for the Hearst Mansion Haunted House opening night. She's also eating a lot of what she bakes, along with some pretty bizarre concoctions, as she is four months pregnant. Lottie brings all of the goodies to the event and Everett helps her set up the dessert table. They meet a variety of new people connected to the mansion and the event. The mansion has a reputation for being cursed. Many family members have died over the years in tragic ways. Lottie and Everett decide that they have time to tour the Haunted House and see what creepy things have been set up to scare people. When they enter one of the upstairs rooms, Lottie tries to talk to the person there but come to find out, it's not Halloween makeup, they're dead. Lottie's an amateur sleuth with a great record at deducing the killer. The only thing is that she promised her deceased grandmother that she would back off the next time there was a murder because it was going to be too dangerous for her and the baby. She promised that she would let the police do their job. Lottie is transmundane and sees and talks with the pets of the recently departed. The victim's pet is a huge Great Dane dog named Duke. Duke seems to be more interested in spending time with Carlotta, Lottie's biological mother, than helping solve the crime. Everett and Noah are trying their best to get Lottie to stay away from trying to solve the crime. She knows it's dangerous but just can't seem to step away from it all. Unfortunately, things can always go from bad to worse...

Scary and spice and everything nice...

Spooky Spice Cake Curse is the twenty-sixth book in the Murder in the Mix series by Addison Moore and it's wonderful as always. Town baker Lottie Lemon is once again doomed to stumble upon another dastardly murder of one of her town's residents who just so happens to be sampling her desserts. Despite being ominously warned not to get involved at her own risk and using her ever-evolving transmundane abilities with the help of a spectral pet, Lottie and friends must hunt for a killer among the residents of Honey Hollow. Hopefully before the murderer turns their sights on our investigative town baker herself. But the afterlife seems to be out to destroy the town and anyone who happens to stick their nose anywhere near the supernatural disasters. But even that can't deter our insatiably curious heroine. Can it?

Meanwhile, underneath the murder mystery remains the ongoing love triangle between Lottie, Everett and Noah. An upcoming addition soon to be thrown into the mix will forever change the complicated threesome and increase tensions all the more. As if their situation wasn't complicated enough right?!

While this is a standalone, I highly recommend reading at least a few of the previous books in the series. This book is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page and give you a few good laughs in between. You'll thoroughly enjoy this spirited story from a fantastic author. I can't wait to see what this gang gets up to next.

I received a copy of this book for the purpose of a review.

I can’t believe Lottie!! She’s already a fool filtering between two men and pregnant but is that enough? nooo! She risks her life and her baby’s life plus the lives of both of her men when she was warned off!! Nell said it’s dangerous don’t do it pass on this murder but she doesn’t listen. She’s not invincible neither is her family she professes to love but continues to put them in danger!! Evie chose Lottie as her mother because her biological mother ignored her. Lottie says she loves Evie but half the time she doesn’t even know where she is! Carlotta is annoying she’s like a child who has never grown up and her “relationship “ with duke was disgusting!! Her non stop sexual relationships are as well. No wonder Lottie is loose in her relationships even Lottie’s adopted mother seems to be a sex addict, her sisters too seemed obsessed. It seems the only normal person in her life was her adoptive father and unfortunately he’s not around anymore to guide her. Noah’s father and brother are just as bad. Everett’s father just shove their kids in boarding school which is what Evie’s mom did yet Everett wasn’t agreeable to that scenario. Although the fact he wasn’t aware he had a child certainly made a difference. Now Evie is taking after Lottie with two boyfriends!! Maybe a boarding school is safer? It certainly isn’t safe around Lottie either with her murder cases and morality issues.

Spooky Spiced Cake Curse is the twenty-sixth book in the Murder in the Mix Mystery series. This series stories builds on each other so I would suggest reading them in order to get the most out of it, but you could always read them as a stand alone if you wanted to and not be to lost.
Lemon has a gift of seeing dead animal of those who will experience back luck soon, but lately deadly luck. Like all the books in this series, when Lottie sees a ghostly animal she knows death is soon to follow.
Legend has it in the small town of Honey Hollow there is a curse that has been haunting a family for generations. The Hearst family has had a long line of mysterious deaths to those in the family and this Halloween is not exception. The head of the Hearst family came back to town to use the old family home to have a haunted house at. It was a major hit but it had a deadly cost. This murder was the most gruesome scene she has stumbled upon. Will she be able to head the warning and stay away from the case? Or will she find herself mix up in the mess and solving one more case.

The author has once again brought us to Honey Hollow for a festive holiday visit with Lottie Lemon and the gang. Holidays in Honey Hollow are always exciting affairs and this holiday is no different. Lottie has plenty of excitement going on this Halloween season with her ability to see the dead, a curse in the air, a murder to solve and her deceased Grandma Nell demanding she steer clear of this case. Oh and, did I mention, there's a baby on the way. Lottie has got her hands full. With her usual entertaining antics and the addition of the many loveable characters that reside in Honey Hollow, this is sure to be a Halloween you won't want to miss.

This author has created a series that, even after 26 books, still grabs my attention and keeps me engaged until the end. Within the pages of the Murder In The Mix books the reader gets to take a pleasant ride on the emotional rollercoaster. Well done to the author on another amazing read.

Spooky Spice Cake Curse has dropped into my life at the perfect time, as I’m in full swing of pre-October! Halloween in Honey Hollow with a baker who can see the dead, a murder to solve, and a baby on the way. Let’s not forget her handsome men and the vast array of characters that have become old friends at this point.
Even at book #26 Addison has kept me on my toes and playing the guessing game of who done it. I love that I can laugh out loud, swoon, and gasp all in one book.
Each book in the Murder in the Mix series can be read as a stand-alone, but go back to book one if you haven’t, relationships and people will make so much more sense!
As for me, it’s until next time Honey Hollow, I can’t wait to visit for another adventure.

Lottie Lemon has done it again --found another body! In this, the 26th book of the Murder in the Mix series, Lottie is actually instructed from beyond the grave to NOT investigate any upcoming murder. As everyone knows Lottie though, especially Everett and Noah, Lottie doesn't listen well and seeks justice for the victim. This murder is different though as a supposed curse is to blame on the victim's death. Will Lottie heed the warning she received from the other side, or will she risk everything to solve a crime? Read this latest Honey Hollow book to find out, and watch out for the twists and turns, and cliffhanger storyline. Addison Moore pulls you in with her descriptions of people and places until you are right in the middle of the story with the characters.

Lottie has been warned by Nell to stay away from the latest murder that has happened in Honey Hollow, but of course, Lottie just can't keep herself away from this investigation. Will Lottie be ok when this murder is solved or not???

while investigating this murder so many things go wrong in the town that everyone believes there is a curse in the town that is causing havoc all over the place. Will solving the murder cause the curse to go away? You will have to read the book to find out.

Another great read by Addison. This is a stand alone read but I really suggest you read them all as then you can fall in love with Lottie and the gang.

Least favorite book in series

Spoiler

Being pregnant is not a reason for Lottie to be brainless. Her "need" for justice out weighing the warnings from Nell were just plain stupid. I never saw her as a dimwitted character till this book. She really became increasing annoying as the book went on. If Everett is dead I am done. The relationship with Noah is boring. They don't work, he needs to move on. Ughhh, just so disappointed. But will actually have to start the next book to find out Everett fate, if he is dead so is this series.

Addison Moore never disappoints! Lottie Lemon and her gang are at it again. There has been another murder in Honey Hallow. Lottie is of course ready to solve it but with a baby on the way, a curse in the air and a stern warning to stay away from the case from her Grandma Nell things are a bit different this time. There is a big cliffhanger at the end so I am very anxious to read the next book!

This one pretty much had it all. Lottie is being told to stay away from the latest murder mystery from beyond the grave. Does she listen - no! Does she really know what the consequences are - no! The book had quite a few twists and turns to it. Add in the fact that the ending made me question Addison Moore's sanity and you got it all. I am now waiting for the next book to see how it all plays out. I am wondering if we will now see Lottie get even more powers to thwart her new nemesis.

it's Halloween in Honey Hollow and a haunted house to go to. But will there be another body? You can count on it and more suspects than you can count. Then there is this curse that is suppose to be on this family and what can go wrong? Neel comes back to warn Lottie not to get involve but does she listen, no. But does the curse fall on all the town or just the family? Noah and Everett do everything to keep Lottie safe but will it be enough?

A good mystety.

Hallowe'en is here, and Honey Pot Hollow is celebrating. Lottie is at a haunted house where a murder occurs. Many people believe a curse caused the murder.. I wish Lottie will stop feeling insecure about Everett and Noah. How it ended is unexpected.

This was the scariest of the series yet. While the other books end on a happy note, beware this on doesn't and leaves a big cliffhanger. That is why I gave 4 stars
