Step 1 - Travel to a different dimension on verge of destruction Step 2 - Save dimension from doomsday event Step 3 - Find the Wayfarer woman to take back so their dimension stabilizes Step 4 - Bind Wayfarer woman to you for bonus powers and abilities Step 5 - Get paid and then go back to Step 1
Better than the Alpha in writing, but still a pretty bad book. It's predictable and shallow to be honest. The one thing that was better in 'The Alpha' are the sex scenes, as they are more than 1, considering we're talking about this type of book...I expected more.
Recap: A poor exterminator gets called to the rich side of town for a little pest control job. He stumbles upon a secret lab where he finds out he is the one person that can travel between dimensions. With the help of a father that's consciousness resides in a computer and his rich bitch daughter, they convince this man to travel into parallel dimensions, risking his life, for money.
There's no rhyme nor reason to this book. The MC is Wayfarer, the one person on a 7+ billion person planet that can travel between dimensions. Even ignoring the reasoning that Fate is the cause for this innocuous man being in the right place at the right time to activate a computer that has been in hibernation for five years, the whole book hinges on the fact that this seemingly normal human being is able to survive inter-dimensional travel because two people he has never met, say so.
There really is too much to complain about, so let's focus on the first glaring weakness. Hunter Bragg(MC) is told that he is a Wayfarer. He can safely travel to other dimensions. Unfortunately, he is the only being on Earth able to do so. The AI Computer, which houses Dr. Nash's consciousness and his Daughter, who watches over the house which the computer is secreted away in, convince Hunter to hop between dimensions to save other Earths in order to learn how to save the Earth that they live in.
Obviously, Hunter doesn't believe them, but they offer him money to play along, which, being poor his whole life, is a decent incentive. NONE OF THAT explains why Dr. Nash and 'little miss silver spoon up her ass' rush to send him off to another dimension.
If Hunter is the ONLY HOPE of saving the world, and several others, why would you send someone off into dangerous situations without training them? The book consistently brings up the very low likelihood that Hunter will survive. Why would you risk the only person who could save your world??? It's such a glaring weakness in the story, that I couldn't finish the last 15% of the book.
There are several other such instances of such plot holes. I made the mistake of choosing a book based on its ratings rather than combing through the comments. I don't know who this Author, Eric Vall, paid off to leave so many five stars, or if he just made several accounts just to bump up his own account, but I can't see why anyone would find this book interesting.
I honestly believe in constructive criticism and I rarely find books that I find so badly written, that I simply can not find any way to look at the book in some positivity, but unfortunately, this book has nothing to build off of. It's a quick written trope with an inability to support its own story line.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
For a first book in a new series, the start was a bit rocky and the writing style was different to normal. But about 15-20mins into reading I couldn't put this book down. Adrenaline field apocalyptic action, gorgeous babe and terrifying mutant creatures.
Can't wait to see the next apocalyptic scenario we go venturing into!
Mc is an idiot and uses phrases like "what the crap". If you read litrpg regularly you already know this is a pretty good indicator of the special breed of pansy beta male that is prolific in the genre... Kneckbeard hero strikes again
The idea of traveling between alternate reality dimensions is not new, and the author of this one, chooses the worst possible main character, Hunter, a pest control employee, as the only main in the Universe that can save each world. The author focuses more on the women, their curves and possible sensual liaisons than on making the stories credible and real. Everything could have been better in this story series, better main character, better character descriptions, better world building, better more credible "machine and machinery required to jump to alternate realities"...etc. etc. etc. No inside maps, no inside illustrations, no character summaries, no introduction or conclusions, no real world building, no explanations on the process of traveling to and from alternate realities. In the original Time Machine (H.G. Wells), there was a machine that traveled through time, Dr. Who, used a British phone box, Back to the Future used a DeLorean Car, the author of this one, sent the main character Hunter without any device (machine to transport him/them), without any clothes, any knowledge, any possibility of really succeeding in anything which is totally nonsensical, irrational and illogical. In the Terminator series of movies, they traveled back in time "naked" because those primitive machines had no way to separate the molecules of things from those of the people that they were sending. The thing is, this "alternate reality travel machine, from this story came from the "future" and yet is unable to carry anything but the main character. Even Fantasy series, use teleportation, summoning, etc. and are able to carry and travel to and from anything and anywhere. Main character, Hunter has no martial arts training, no nuclear engineering career, no firearms training, no archery knowledge, machine gun usage training, driving, any training at all, except maybe pest control?? and yet the author doesn't seem to care about that one bit... It's hard to believe, that the cover is of a post-nuclear holocaust victim, dressed like a runway model using an assault rifle, like if it were something that runway models could do. The scavengers wore tattered clothing in the novel, and on the cover the woman seems totally out of place from the story line.
How does he come up with so many good stories and then cranks them out like a machine?! The simple answer is that he’s an Android. Sitting at his desk waiting until the reviews click rapidly towards 100 and then, as the counter clicks past the preordained number, his body clicks and begins to whir, his eyes begin to glow and his metallic fingers hover over the keyboard once more......
This was thoroughly enjoyable, I'll be The first to say when stories usually have a heavy physics bending element time travel multiple dimensions and what not it's not my cup of tea. But this was fantastic the characters were enjoyable, and the world building was too tier!
Doomsday Hunter series (I hope) kicked off with a great start! Hunter takes his first trip into a parallel dimension and goes though some wild adventures and narrow escapes to help restore the timeline. He gains an awesome warrior woman companion, has great sex ...what more can you want in a book! Read the series you'll enjoy it!
I liked the story I just was not impressed with the leads so called skills to me he is just to dumb for a broke guy trying to better himself, most guys I’m familiar with that are broke but working hard have a lot more and varied skill set than depicted in this book.
Good light reading, only have the without law series to compare and this has similarities but doesn't detract from the enjoyment. The potential for future dimensions seems limitless so many more to come hopefully. Looking forward to some really different scenarios. I really like the stuck up Karla Nash and hope she can become a bigger part of future stories.
My fav series by the author. Wish he'd do more with it as the potential for new and interesting stories are endless.
Unlike some series which focus on the same wash rinse and repeat... This series offers the chance to go to new worlds, with new Doomsdays. Not to mention that the deeper plot was never even expanded on and the possible exciting future releases that could spawn are endless.
Having read over 50 of Master Vall’s books, I thought this series might end up being stale. I was wrong. Some really cool sci fi stuff brings you into the world, but it’s the plot twists at the end that bring it home. Now I am hooked. Nice job EV!
Very interesting story line, interesting characters
I found the story arresting and the plot line followed through nicely. I am looking forward to more of these stories. I don't usually comment but this was really good.
It was a good book, however I've either read too much of Erica books or in just really good at figuring out what's gonna happen way before it does lol. Looking forward to the next book.
It’s a decent start to a new series with an interesting premise. The fighting scenarios need to be a little more realistic. I’m still looking forward to the next installment.
Did have some areas that seemed to be repetive, almost like a filler pages, but Did. Keep me interested till the end. Only thing bad was no follow up to finish the story. Kind of hard to wait. Months for additional books,
To me this book is a very interesting read. However I am pretty disappointed in as much as I found it listed under post apocalypse harem titles and it went 68percent of the book before the only sex setting. This does not make a harem to me!
I think just about everything that Eric has written has been pretty good but this one I had my doubts about. I should have known it would draw me in. I hope to continue the journey with these characters and see where this goes.
Loved it of course Eric Val is a master at making awesome epic adventure novels wish it's didn't go baby crazy in the first book if it keeps it up probably stop reading nothing kills a bad ass story like baby craziness
An interesting take on the apocalypse genre. The action never stops from beginning to end. Sexy times are good and the action sequences are explained very well
Good story with simple characters but overly convenient plot. Fun short but not enough here for any more books. Nice diversion for an afternoon read though.
What an entertaining read this book was. I thoroughly enjoy the world's this author continues to create and lead us through. Excitedly awaiting the next book!
